This is an excellent profile of a pre-Independence era slave. Venture Smith's story offers insights into the world of the slave in the 1700s. Two authors managed the words of the slave in the book. Excerpts from Venture Smith's narrative were placed in strategic places and illustrated the authors' commentary, I would like to have read more from Smith's narrative directly. I felt I was getting excelent commentary about the slave's life, but little from the slave directly.
