הוא הלך בשדות, רומן הביכורים של משה שמיר, נולד ערב הקמת המדינה והיה ברבות השנים לאבן יסוד בספרות העברית החדשה ולסמלה של תקופה שלמה, על ערכיה, אנשיה והתחבטויותיה.

סיפור אהבתם של אורי, קיבוצניק צעיר ויפה תואר, פלמ"חניק וציוני נלהב - דגם האב של "הצבר החדש" - ושל מיקה, עולה חדשה מ"שם", נרקם על רקע היישוב העברי הצעיר, הנאבק בערבים ובבריטים ומתמודד עם צלקות המלחמה באירופה. החיבור המרגש והטעון בין אורי למיקה נמתח על הציר שבין השורשי לעקור, בין הציוני לגלותי, ובין החיים למוות.
הספר זכה בפרס אוסישקין ואף הומחז והוצג בתיאטרון. הצגת הבכורה, במאי 1948, היתה ההצגה הראשונה במדינת ישראל.

משה שמיר (2004-1921), יליד צפת, הוא מן הבולטים בסופרי תש"ח וחתן פרס ישראל לשנת 1988. ספרו הוא הלך בשדות ראה אור לראשונה בשנת 1947.

About the author

Moshe Shamir (Hebrew: משה שמיר) was born in Safed. He went to the Tel Nordau School and graduated from the Herzliya Hebrew High School in Tel Aviv.

In the Israeli War of Independence he served in Palmach. He began his political career as a member of the movement Hashomer Hatzair, in which he filled a leadership role. He was one of the editors of their official newspaper Al Ha-Homa from 1939 to 1941. From 1944 to 1946 he was a member of kibbutz Mishmar HaEmek. He was founder and editor of the Israel Defense Forces official newspaper Bamahane ("In the Camp") from 1947 to 1950. During the 1950s he was a member of the editorial board of the newspaper Maariv and the editor of its literature section.

Had to admit that i almost didn't make it to the 120th page, almost all of the 1st half is just very boring (and on top of that written in older Hebrew which makes it even less exciting) description of the Kibbutz and the agricultural work there. Really wanted to stop but because it's considered such an important book decided to keep on. I have to say that it payed off. The 2nd part of the book that already talks about the love affair between Mika (a new immigrant) & Uri (Zabar from that Kibbutz). That story is really well written and it almost gets better with every page until the very last. Shamir managed to portray exceptionally well how people think in their perspective ages (i can fully recall some instances that i felt exactly like Uri in some difficult situations and from what i know about the other sex few told me instances that they felt like Mika) and Shamir presents it in a great way.
I'd say that for me because of the struggle to get through the 1st half plus the older language made it an overall average book but if you can skim your way & then read only the 2nd half this book is very good
