* I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.*
After receiving this book I went on Goodreads and noticed that it had a few very positive reviews so I was excited to start it. I'm almost sad to say that my opinion of the book is not the same.
I really struggled with this book. Although the story idea is interesting the book itself was all over the map. There are two many plots and I found that I could not connect fully with them. There is Kim's divorce, a much younger love interest, a mystery involving her first lover, and her father's illness. Add to this a side plot involving her best friend that really made no sense and you basically have the story. It just seemed like too many different things going on yet it was still a very slow read.
I found Kim to be very naive and uptight for a woman in her 40's and because of this, also annoying. I connected more with the wine (it is referenced a lot) than the budding relationship with Camilo. The conversations between all characters seemed forced and unnatural. Her sudden interest in Mark after 20 some years of not thinking about him was hard to believe as well. Who forgets about their first lover especially under the circumstances in this book for over 20 years?
My biggest disappointment is in how the book ends. Absolutely nothing is resolved which leads me to believe that perhaps a second book is in the works. If that is the case, I don't think I'll be reading it. It just was not my cup of tea.
There are many reasons that I may choose a book to read. In this case the first thing that made me want to read this book was the author's last name. Jensen is a family name in my family, so Deborah Jensen's name caught my eye and made me check out Beyond Escape a little closer. When I read the back of the book and found out what the story was about, well that cinched it. I just had to read Beyond Escape.
Kim is so in need of some time away. She has just ended a marriage to a man she thought she loved and loved her back, however she found out he is a no good lying cheater! Then the man has the gull to tell her he still loves her! That was enough Kim knows she must get out of town and regroup. She needs to get her life back on track, a new track, without her ex. I really admired Kim, she has been through a lot and knows it's time for a break. I love that she goes to visit her parents. What could possibly be better then spending some time with Mom and Dad when things are falling apart? However, when she gets there she finds out there is things going on with her Dad and it really is a blessing she is visiting at that time. I don't want to give too much away, so I will just leave it at that. I love how this gives her and her Mom a better chance to bond and that they take the opportunity to bond.
Kim meets a new fella while she is visiting her parents. There is an instant bond between these two. However there are a few things that could stand in their way. I don't want to give too much of the story away so I really don't want to tell you too much about this situation. However, once I got to this part of the story I was completely captivated and unable to put this book down until I finished the story. There are many twist and turns that I totally did not see coming at all. I really enjoyed the whole story.
I hope that Deborah Jensen may be writing a follow up to this book. I know I would love to read more about these characters. I found Ms. Jensen to have a very nice writing voice and found this book very easy to read. I would certainly be willing to read more work by her in the future.
I was given the opportunity to read this book in order to share my thoughts with you. As always it has been my pleasure to share my thoughts on Beyond Escape with you all.
At eighteen, Kim goes from Maine to Texas with mark and his wife, Maite. Starting as just friends, Mark and Kim’s relationship moves forward. Fast forward twenty years, recently divorce Kim returns to Texas to visit her parents for a month’s vacation. This visit brings her past affair back up and she is convinced she needs to know the truth about what happen to Mark. The visit also brings Camilo into her life. Making her realize her life isn't over, especially with the attention for a much younger, hot man, a.k.a. Camilo.
I very much enjoyed Beyond Escape. Watching as Kim relives her past even when headed into uncharted territory. It caught my attention and held it until the last page. The stories of drugs, murder, and secret love affairs were amazingly intertwined. Some of the stories I could see where they were headed or where I thought they were headed, then it would do a 180 and go a totally different way. The fact that Camilo, which started as a distraction, ended up fitting perfectly into the story web made the novel so much better.
Kim won me over when she decorated her parent’s house for Christmas, even though they hadn’t really celebrated in years. Getting back to old family traditions made her so loving. The days and nights she spent with her mom and dad, who she referred to as Nina and Jack, showed how loving and caring of a daughter she was.
I highly recommend Beyond Escape. A little romance, a lot of intrigue makes this novel impossible to pass up.
REVIEW Here we have a husband of twenty years who is cheating. Kim, his wife, has had enough and is finally divorced. She needs space, to get away from everything. Since she is off for the month during Christmas, she decides to visit her parents. They live in a retirement community. The boss of the landscaping for the community is Camilo. He has an interest in Kim, but that interest is not returned. He's too young for her. It seemed when they were talking with each other, it was dull, no excitement.. I had a hard time reading this book. It wasn't clicking for me. There didn't seem to be any excitement or adventure. Just another marriage gone bad. I wanted something to happen that would liven up Kim's life. Put some adventure and excitement in it. Then there was a small story within the big story. All about a friend of Kim's, Connie. What was the point? This was a story about Kim and her looking for a new life. The book didn't just seem to flow. Along with the separate story of Connie we have another story about Kim's ex-boyfriend. We actually have three stories going on. I just have to say the book wasn't for me. To me it wasn't real. Everybody has different tastes and sees things differently. So I would suggest for you to get a copy of BEYOND ESCAPE by Deborah K. Jensen and read for yourself. Then draw your own conclusion.
I would give this book 2 CHECK MARKS.
I was given a complimentary copy of BEYOND ESCAPE by Deborah K. Jensen from herself and Bostick Communications for my honest opinion. No other compensation was received.
Escape from her life is what Kim needs. recently separated from her husband, she needs to re assess and re group--so she heads down to Texas to stay with her parents where they now live in a retirement community. Her friend Connie also needs an escape and takes off to California--
Unfortunately the trip to Texas brings back memories from long ago for Kim of which she tries to make sense. The owner of the company that takes care of the gardening at the retirement community takes an instant liking to Kim and is persistent in asking her out. She has her doubts-he is 17 years younger then she is! As all this is happening Kim is trying to find out about Mark, the man she had an affair with so many years ago, who supposedly died and was found in the trunk of his car.
Just as Kim finally agrees to go with Camillo to his home in Mexico for the New Years weekend--and she is finally deciding that maybe age does not matter---they find out something which could shatter all. What they find out devastates both of them. the weekend ends abruptly.
Kim goes back to her job and they are finally at least speaking on the phone--now both trying to figure out what really happened to the man who died. And no, this writer left it hanging--I can only hope she will be writing a sequel!!! Beyond Escape
Although the title alludes to danger and intrigue, there isn't much of that going on here. After a hopeful start, unfortunately this book fell somewhat flat for me. The premise is good, but I don't believe that it followed through on its promise. I really wanted more. Here are my issues with the book:
The true identity of Camilo for me was predictable.
While Kim's past was a bit dicey (even the those parts that she was not privy to), I was expecting her to be sucked back into that world and it just never happened.
Kim's relationship with her best friend Connie and the tidbits of Connie's life were unnecessary and didn't really add to the story.
The ending was cut short and left a lot of unanswered questions. Not sure if there is going to be a sequel, but I felt like I was the only one of my girlfriends left out of a really big secret.
This book may not have met my expectations, but it wasn't a bad read. If you are looking for something light to take on vacation, this might work for you. However, if you are looking for something with a little more teeth, you won't find it here.
Disclaimer: I received this book from the author free of charge in exchange for an honest review.
Wow, this was a great read. I would love to know if there would be a squeal. I was constantly flipping through wanting to know more. I fought fatigue during sickness to finish this book, it is THAT GOOD! I know I am heartbroken, I feel a little home-sick when I closed the back cover. I will forever hold the characters in my heart. Kim takes a relaxing break from her divorce to head to Texas to spend the Holidays with her parents. What she doesn’t realize is how much she is able to let go, and find out what she had been missing. As soon as she is heading back to Texas her past memories keep creeping up to her. What she finds out is crazy, but so worth it. If you love adventure, mystery, love, relationships, family… all mixed up into one book, you would love this. I would recommend it! We're Jumpin' Books
