Today was circled. In red. Blood red. It was Friday the thirteenth.
How absolutely magnificent. We - that is, those of us who consider ourselves to be humble and utterly faithful fans of the 24/7 Demon Mart books from the quintessential Queen of quirkiness herself, namely, D.M.Guay - can only rejoice as this newest mini-tome once again manages to poignantly touch our hearts, our funny bones and yes, even our very souls! "Kevin vs. Lloyd" can safely be added to this most uproarious collection of tales without delay or inquiry. For truly, this tale embraces so much of what we yearn for, as our characters find themselves as tortured as the poor salesman Gregor Samsa of Franz Kafka's "The Metamorphosis" or as manipulated by the fae as the cast of Shakespeare's "A Midsommer's Night Dream".
I, Lloyd Lamb Wallace, former human graveyard shift clerk at 24/7 Demon Mart, was no longer human.
The premise of this latest chapter in our convenience store crew is truly brilliant in its simplicity and I shan't delve in detail of same for fear of revealing too much of the plot. But having now balanced the questions of both "how to survive" alongside "how does one truly live?", well, this expeditious read will stay with me for some time to come. We are left to wonder then if any of us are able to convincingly know if we are living, nay, even existing to our true potential without having the perspective gained from embodying the reality of others around us. Is it "I think therefore I am" or moreso "I exist because you see me and I see you"? I fear that I am not enlightened enough myself to decipher such a philosophical or even moral conundrum. Still, I truly enjoy the scrutiny of asking these questions which I find to be brimming with the electricity of contemplation!
I smelled through my head and heard through my butt.
Yes, within these pages we are treated not only to reminders of lore from earlier works from the pen of our author, but a new understanding of just what some of our players are truly capable. Will Lloyd ever perceive his purpose in life and strive for what can only be considered a brighter and more promising tomorrow? Will Kevin ever regain if not his spiritual humanity then at least the trappings of what he once perhaps was, namely an actual corporeal mortal being? And should any of us ever find ourselves as trapped as our "antagonist" in this tale, will we also be more focused on long-awaited and even necessary functions or more carnal pleasures? It is indeed a mystery that shall prevail until something new arrives to distract us.
When you're a roach, everything in the world is trying to kill you all day, every day. Every minute is a fight to stay alive.
In conclusion, I can only state again how much I was entertained - yes, dear Maximus, we were indeed and make no doubt about it. I can only look forward with as much anticipation as I can garner to the next opus, which as all others before, will no doubt be what is often referred to by those more earthy than I, that is, a "real knee-slapping, effing hoot". And now if you'll excuse me, I have a brand new highlighter and a fresh copy of "Keisters and Coupes" to, um, review and must make haste as my throne awaits. Au revoir mes amis et a bientôt!
Lloyd is the hero of D.M. Guay’s excellent 24/7 Demon Mart Series. He’s a fairly typical young man who might charitably be described as unambitious or lazy, although he has always stood up for and come through for his friends and family in all the books in this series. Kevin is his supervisor at the 24/7 Demon Mart—a store that conceals a portal from the supernatural realms to our world. Kevin used to be a human, but his earthly life was such that when it came time to be reincarnated, he was brought back as a cockroach. Think about it for a moment. He was a slimy self-absorbed cockroach in his first life and he’s even more so now.
In Kevin vs Lloyd, the two characters get into an argument over whose life is worse and then, unexpectedly get to prove their points in a way that could only happen amidst the magical disaster that is the Demon Mart. The problem involves a huge wooden chest, a constipated djinn, and um…well, that would be telling.
Once again, Guay made me laugh all the way through the story. If you’ve read any other book in the series, I think you’ll laugh too. But if you haven’t started the series yet, I would drop everything else you had planned for the rest of the day, get yourself a copy of The Graveyard Shift and start reading.
I got the first books kind of by accident on Audible .....there's a publishers pack and it has 3 of the books on it for one credit so if bottom mixed up with something some of recommended to me and I DO glad I did ....well written make you actually laugh stories ....brilliant characters who you can kind of relate to ...I'm not going to tell you more than what you read on the info but before you by I hate when some one give so much info out! All I can say is if you like things funny in my opinion like books and films hitchhiker guide to the galaxy...supernatural.guardians of the galaxy...Paul. ...rocky horror picture show ...Joes apartment!!! Monsters ..aliens...ghosts....supernatural stuff with a HUGE dose of funny this author is for you! Enjoy! 😊
I have so far read every 24/7 Demon Mart book and this was the last one for me. I really wish this wasn't the last book because these books were awesome. I love the characters, I love the story, I love the comedy, I love everything about these books. I wish these books were made into a cartoon that would last a hundred seasons because this story is just so funny and addictive to read.
I said this in a previous review, but I had to pick voices to read in my head and Lloyd is Brad Boimler from Star Trek Lower Decks, DeeDee is Beckett Mariner from also Star Trek Lower Decks and at first I chose Chris Parnell for Kevin, but I changed it after the first book I read to Adam Carolla because he just seems like he would talk like that.
A side quest from the 24/7 Demon Mart series. Kevin the Roach and Lloyd Lamb Wallace are working on Friday the 13th, which if you know the store, could spell doom with it being a gateway to Hell for demons and monsters. Thankfully the 2nd Friday 13th of the year the gate gets closed down and the store is just a store. But it's never quiet at the Demon Mart and Kev and Lloyd are going to have their very own Freaky Friday.
A wonderful short story that's fun and entertaining. You don't need to read this side quest story at any particular point in the Demon Mart series, I read it after book 6 but I could have read this after book 1 easily without losing the fun times.
What happens in the Demon Mart on Friday the 13th? Kevin and Lloyd are left alone to mark clearance items. Sounds easy and uneventful, right. No, not on Lloyd's life. Meet the blue jinn, the mouse, the spider hidden in the dark and a pile of poo. Or...meet the girls of the roller derby team. Either one is hazardous to Lloyd. As usual the raunchy events unfold before the crack of dawn. And as usual this is just too short, give me a Demon Mart tale the length of War and Peace. Or at least as long as a roll of toilet paper.
The story of the events and people at Demon Mart continue with this rather funny and at times rather gross story in which Kevin, the cockroach manager and Lloyd, the overweight employee, end up changing bodies.
So Kevin, now Lloyd, gets to fulfill some fantasies of his and Lloyd, now a cockroach, learns just how hard it is to survive as a cockroach.
The whole thing is really a great addition to this series.
Ever wondered what Kevin would do as a person? Time to find out.
Honestly, Demon Mart stories are always winners for me. It doesn’t even seem to matter which characters I get to encounter. Everyone’s entertaining. Demon Mart books are fun, short reads.
Kevin and Lloyd are working Friday the thirteenth. Tasked to clean out a trunk and clearance out some of the stuff inside. When behold they come across a paranormal creature in a box. They are fighting over a wish and they are magically switched. Leading to lots of angst and hilarity.
D.M. Guay has written a short story about Kevin and Lloyd coming across a genie in the store where they work trapped in a box. The genie will grant them one wish each if they free him from the box.
A great book for lovers of science fiction and fantasy.
A cracking little novella. These two, always bickering. Just what I needed before starting out on (Re)Possessed to refresh my memory after a long break between 24/7 books.
I love he series - have read them all. This story was hysterical! I almost feel sorry for Kevin. And I wonder what he did to become a roach. Must have been some bad karma. Hehehe.
Friday the 13th in the Demon Mart, what could possibly go wrong!! Lloyd and Kevin are left alone and a clearance bin and a Jinii later, find themselves swapping bodies. Quick read, as Lloyd lives a roaches life, while Kevin has fun in a real body.
I think it was good.could have been longer though I wish we could see more of Kevin in the other books and one thing I did not like was the fact that the drama starts at the beginning like give a up rise slowly working up
Absolutely LOVE this series! Had to go with 3 stars since I skimmed a few pages on how hard it is to be a cockroach. It's been a hellofva week. Lol a devoted fan though!!!
