Reviewed by Lee Ashford for Readers' Favorite.

“Deadly Descent” by R. G. Porter is an altogether too feasible scenario, in which a new life form is discovered at the bottom of the Mariana Trench. Having evolved at such an intense pressure, in absolute darkness, the organism undergoes changes when brought aboard the pressure-controlled, well-lit undersea laboratory, “Titan”.

Having received an invitation to participate, by none other than her long-time friend and mentor, Dr. Justin Niles, Dr. Tori Cutter was honored and excited to be involved in such a momentous occasion. However, when she is finally brought to the underwater lab in a small submersible craft, Dr. Niles is nowhere to be found, nor has he been seen or heard from over the past several hours.

In fact, the entire lower level of the compound has been isolated due to some unknown pathogen incapacitating many of those unfortunate enough to have been on the lower level at that time. What has become of Dr. Niles? Will Dr. Cutter have second thoughts about accepting the invitation to join the team?

“Deadly Descent” is a fascinating tale, simply because it is realistically feasible. When the time comes that technology has provided a way for humans to survive at the bottom of the Mariana Trench, it would be much, much more surprising if they did NOT discover new life forms! What will happen to those organisms when they are removed from the environment in which they evolved, to be studied in a 1-G, well-lighted laboratory?

R. G. Porter has divulged one such possibility, which is frightening simply because we know, on some sub-conscious level, that it could really happen the way Porter presented it. Porter has done an exceptional job of portraying various personalities, too, from the egotistical and arrogant venture capitalist, to the take-charge ex-commando, to the selfless, legitimately concerned doctor who only wants to find a way to stop an epidemic that does not require killing the patients.

“Deadly Descent” by R. G. Porter is one book you will not soon forget.

what did I think:
OMG even though its only 136 pages and it ends on what I might consider a cliffhanger , I still loved it, loved how it pulled me in, kept me on the edge of my bed, its had every thing I wanted in a story like this, right off the bat it got creepy and crazy, action is fast paced, the terror quite vivid and the characters most resourceful, enough original twists to keep you turned in .

Let me start off by saying that when i first read the synopsis to this book i thought it was just going to be another zombie book. Oh how wrong i was! Deadly Descent was so different then anything i have ever read. The plot was amazingly original, making it such a fresh read. The author did a wonderful job incorporating the fears of the unknown with John and Tori coming in from the outside into a situation that no one knew about as well as the fear of the characters being secluded from the world in the facility hundreds of feet underwater. The character growth was another thing that was great about this book. In the very beginning you meet John and Tori. You are shown how distinct their personalities are. For example, you learn John, coming from a military background, takes charge immediately upon landing the sub at the facility using violence if need be, whereas, Tori, who is a scientist, tries to get to the root of the problems by a passive way, trying to save who she can in a cure can be found. As the book goes on you watch these characters as well as a few other grow into one another giving an aspect besides fear to the book.
One of my favorite things about this book is the ending. The author did a wonderful job of keeping the reader guessing and he even left it where if he wanted to do a sequel he could. I look forward to reading more by this author, especially if she decides to do a sequel to this amazing delightful read!!

This book reminded me very much of Alien, but underwater.

Dr Tori Cutter is travelling to the middle of the Atlantic Ocean in response to a plea by a friend, Dr Justin Niles. He is aboard a research facility far beneath the surface, and has found a strange new plant life which he needs her help with.

On arriving Tori meets Lt. John Akers, pilot of the sub which takes her down to Titan, the research facility. They discover that Dr Niles hasn't been heard of for quite some time. They also find out that on arriving back with the plant several members of the team fell ill, power started to drain from Titan's systems, and no one has been down to the lower levels to find out what has gone wrong.

Tori and John make their way to the lower level. On arriving they soon discover the situation is bad, but it gets a lot worse very quickly.

Has the plant caused the illness or is it something else? Can Tori and John find Justin and get him out safely? Why are those who have fallen ill not behaving the way they should?

I loved this story. As I said it reminds me very much of Alien, and several other films I have watched and enjoyed over the years. Just when you think things can't get any worse, they do! I would love to see this turned into a movie in the future. The characters are written well, the suspense keeps building as they go further into the facility, and the ending leads very well to the sequel, which I cannot wait to read!

The book up for review is “Deadly Descent” by R.G. Porter. It falls into the genre of horror and thriller.

The scene: Mariana Trench

Scientists are exploring out of a state of the art facility. Coming across a discovery of an unknown plant the team is excited as examples are brought back to the lab. That is the last time anyone is thrilled.

Dr. Victoria Cutter has been invited, by one of the team doctors, to come help with the process. Feeling something great on the horizon she accepts and arrives at the facility. Just in time to witness things go horribly wrong. By her side is John, the man who has taken her down in the small sub.

What they encounter blows their minds. Men that refuse to stay dead. How did this happen? Is the new discovery to blame for the chaos that is running amuck? No time can be wasted as it is spreading and fast.

The author got me on page one. The hook was dead on perfect. It was a quick read for I needed to know what was going to happen on the next page. It is an in your face, hold no punch kind of adventure that makes you root for the characters in the book. I simply loved it. The ending is well-played if you are the author. For the readers not so much.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book

This book is a great and fun read. The author did a wonderful job of capturing my fears of both the water and confined spaces through her main character, Dr. Victoria Cutter. I also really enjoyed the fact that the characters in this book held composure and never went off half cocked or took off screaming.

Dr. Cutter is both excited and nervous about going to the state of the art facility at the bottom of the ocean to study a new plant life that has been discovered at depths she never thought possible.
When she meets John, the Captain of the submersible that takes them to the lab she has no clue that she and this man are in for more than she could ever imagine.

When they reach the labs they find out that people are falling I'll and they don't know the cause. Dr. Cutter is determined to do whatever she can to find out and stop what is happening and John is determined to keep her safe as she does.

Great read!

Part science fiction, part horror, and a dash of classic adventure game, Deadly Decent is a thrilling read. The action is fast paced, the terror quite vivid and the characters most resourceful. The setting is far below the surface of the ocean and the writing style keeps the pressure of the depth, danger, and mystery on high through out. Really an entertaining and frightening read with enough homage to the genres to hook the scifi horror buffs on track yet enough original twists to hook the less than fanatic horror fan like me.
