Sun and Cross: From Megalithic Culture to Early Christianity in Ireland

Rate this book
The highly evolved stone-age culture was absorbed and developed by the Celts when they settled in Ireland in the centuries before Christ. They in turn found it natural to accept Christianity which developed in a unique manner in such spiritual climate. Early hymns and liturgical texts, combining the older nature practice with the new religion of Christianity, bear witness to this unbroken evolution.

A very sane and scholarly book of the transition from Megalithic Culture to Christianity in Ireland. The book is really a fluid whole, but can be divided into two parts. The first part the author gives history along with descriptions and examinations of many of the major Irish stone monuments, including in this is the most thorough examination of Celtic Crosses I have ever seen or heard of. The second party is mostly just history of what became of Celtic Christianity. This book is a must for any serious inquires about what Celtic Christianity actually was. It will also be of equal value to those interested in Celtic Megalithic studies. A great book.

A great high level synopsis of Celtic Christianity starting with Megalithic culture and its influence on the core of this rich spiritual tradition that so threatened Rome.

It is a good while since I read this title, but my recollection is that Streit has done a superb job of characterising the physical and metaphysical state of Ireland prior to the arrival Christianity. The merging of Celtic and Christian beliefs into the unique beleif set that became Christian Ireland is marvellously captired. I deifinitely have strong positive memories of this book a decade later, which is quite literally a sign of a memorably good book.
