Despite the many difficulties, including online abuse, Jessie returns to her hometown of Westhaven still seeking the resolution for the murder 15 years ago of her best friend, Amy Barnes. Jessie is a documentary filmmaker and is also drawn back because there’s been another teen murder. However, five days on Jessie’s life is now on the line, she’s at the edge of her limits, tiring, but determined to try to survive for the sake of her five year old daughter, Freya. Can she, will she, make it? The story is told principally from Jessie’s perspective, but also by her husband, Martin and includes transcripts from “Born Killer“, Jessie’s controversial documentary about Amy‘s murder.

This is another cracking read from PS Cunliffe, I could barely lift my eyes from the narrative! The varying timelines which fills in the knowledge gaps is very smoothly done, and also serves to increase the suspense of Jesse’s situation. The tension here builds and builds, as it’s a race against time and thankfully the author gives you the chance to catch your breath by backtracking to the earlier timeline. It becomes a rollercoaster of a read and like a rollercoaster, the pace rises and falls which is very effective. To say there are twists is somewhat of an understatement, there are twists upon twists, especially towards the end and a few are shocking and unpredictable. Some revelations make you sit up straight and inhale breath as they are so unexpected. There are lies and coverups that keeps you guessing and reading on, desperate to know and understand the truth.

The characterisation is good, the portrayal of the principal characters as adults and as teens feels authentic. Your question, you wonder and ponder on the reliability of the points of view, and this is a particularly enjoyable element of the storytelling.

If you like twisty mystery thrillers, this author is well worth checking out as I’ve liked both of the books of his that I’ve read.

With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Embla Books for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.

Easy read, twisty suspense thriller, I would say more YA to be honest. Following Jessie as she returns to her hometown 15 years after the death of her best friend Amy.

Amy was found at the bottom of a well in Coopers Wood and her killer was never caught. Jessie brought out a true crime documentary called Born Killer which released a wrongly accused Connor from jail after new evidence was uncovered. 15 years on and another body has been found in the well. This time it’s 15 year old Evan and Jessie wants to be the one to find the killer and hopefully finally find Amy’s killer too.

This would have been a 4 🌟 but there were so many mistakes in the book, and I worked a lot of the twists out well in advance.

This audio deals with the effects of a teue crime documentary maker who reyurns to her home town after a teenager dies. She is determined to redeem herself and keep a derp dark secret.
The narration was brill. As the story emerged it became more interesting as the past and the present collide. The narrator portrayed all the emotion of the characters and the pov gave insight. I did gueese the original murderer correctly but the other secret teveal was a fantastic twist. A good listen but it took a while to get going. A solid 4 star listen. Thank you netgallery and publisher and author and narrator.

With its ever-shifting timelines, boring characters, and ruminating filler, this book just made me tired. I also didn't care for the "Born Killer" script inserts, which I consider a cheap way to puff up the word count but it didn't add enough to make me care.

This was a quick, fast paced, exciting murder mystery

Documentary maker Jessica is trapped down a well, after investigating two murders. The story then flashbacks. Chapters also include husband Martin’s POV and documentary clips

The book has a procedural vibe to it with Jessica’s investigation. Teenage Chloe, a big fan of Jessica’s, partners with her and I really enjoyed their dynamic

There’s a strong focus on school bullying and the long term trauma it causes. As someone that was bullied at school, I empathized deeply

I guessed part of one of the twists but not all of it… partly because there was a puzzle piece that came right out of the blue at the end. It didn’t matter too much, but usually there’s clues and unless I missed them all (50/50 to be fair) it was a little odd… I didn’t guess the big twist though which made me happy - love a juicy ending

I recommend listening to this audiobook. Great narrators and the bad signal between Jessica and Fiona felt really authentic

This is my first read from this author and I’ll be checking out his other thriller and hope he writes more

I found this one a bit too long. The twists towards the end were good. However, I feel I have read a few similar books were the main character returns to their hometown to investigate something that happened years ago. It was an ok read for me, it didn't have the 'cannot put it down' effect for me.

This book is a rollercoaster of a thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat from the first page to the last. With a wonderful blend of intricate plot twists and a surprise ending, this novel is a must-read for any avid fan of suspense and mystery.

The narrative is well done, with good character development and suspense that grabs the reader right from the opening scene. However, one aspect that might pose a slight challenge is the shifting tenses between the past and the present. At times, navigating these transitions requires an extra moment of brain power, as it demands careful attention to keep track of the timeline. I had to go back a few times to remember what tense I was in.

Despite this occasional challenge, the story's characters are well developed, each with their own hidden agendas that keep you guessing WDI. The author's ability to skillfully manipulate the reader's expectations is where this novel truly shines. Just when you think you've unraveled the mystery, a new twist emerges, sending the story in yet another unforeseen direction.

The ending is a testament to the author's talent, delivering a conclusion that is as shocking as it is satisfying. The unexpected revelation at the end is a stroke of brilliance, it left we with a sense of shock that I did not figure it out earlier! It also ends on a cliffhanger that is as much a relief as it is a delight!

One Last Breath is a testament to the power of a well-crafted thriller. Despite the occasional tense navigation challenge, it was a wonderful thrilling ride! I liked how the author effortlessly played with the reader's perceptions, delivering a narrative that challenges and surprises at every corner.

Jessie wakes up at the bottom of a well. The same well that her lifeless best friend was found, 15 years prior. Jessie had returned to her hometown to investigate a murder. The circumstances surrounding the murder sounded very similar to those of her best friend. However, it looks like Jessie's reappearance has placed a huge target on her back...

The book alternates between Jessie trying to escape the well and the week leading up to her being in the well. We learn that Jessie made a documentary on her best friend's death, which ultimately freed the suspect - a former friend of Jessie's who was wrongly put behind bars;

This book felt very long-winded for me (pun not intended, haha); Some parts were REALLY dragged out and had way too much unnecessary detail. This novel could have been accomplished in a lot less pages and been far more effective and enjoyable. I found myself skimming some pages, because I simply did not care about the details. It was things that were not even relevant to the plot.

I also managed to figure out "whodunit" somewhat early on, so it took away some excitement from the book. It was just way too obvious!

Thank you Embla Books and NetGalley for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

when you don’t like the main character

I hadn’t read much of this book before I realized I did not like Jess and my dislike for her grew throughout. It was unnerving all of the ignorant, selfish and plain stupid things this woman did. When the story ended I hated her.
Sorry.

I really enjoyed this book! It was fairly predictable in a lot of ways, but it didn't take away from my experience. Nothing was set in stone until we finally see all of the reveals in the end, which confirmed a lot of my suspicions, but I also didn't know the reasons for the actions of the people I suspected, even if I did guess the suspects correctly. There was still more story to tell and I enjoyed the journey!

I also really like P.S. Cunliffe's story-telling and pacing. This is my second book from this author after picking up their debut -- DON'T CLOSE YOUR EYES -- last year on a whim. I was just as pleased with how much I clicked with the book. ONE LAST BREATH alternates back and forth between a present-day timeline to create a lot of suspense and tension, and flashes back to events from five days before present day, slowly creeping forward as we get more of the story filled in and how the characters got where they are. I just really liked the pacing of book, keeping the suspense going throughout the whole novel while filling in that mystery aspect as the book moved along, and I thought it was done really well!

There was one part of the twist that I didn't really love because I kind of felt like it came out of nowhere. Unless I missed a part of the foreshadowing that introduced it, I just felt like I had never heard of it and we didn't have any clues that it was a part of these characters' histories. If that had been interwoven just a bit more, I think that would have made for an even better experience.

I've really enjoyed P.S. Cunliffe's books and I'm so happy this was enjoyable for me as well! I hope to connect to even more of their thriller novels in the future.

I enjoyed this one. The plot twists were fun, without being too far-fetched. At no point did I want to smack the writer for being overly contrived, so yay!

I will say though- the big "truth" that Jessie needed to tell? The-"I Know What You Did Last Summer"- accidentally-killing-someone-and-covering-it-up-and-having-it-come-back-and-bite-you-in-in-ass plot "twist" has become a bit cliche. Lost some points on creativity there. P.S. Cunliffe.

Jessie returns to her hometown to help find some answers after her friend, Amy’s murder 15 years ago. She is attacked and wakes up at the bottom of a well, that she knows all too well. Her phone rings to find a 999 dispatcher trying to reassure her help is on the way after their previous call cut off. Jessie doesn’t remember dialling 999. Help doesn’t come, but the dispatcher won’t let her call off. Time is running out as the water level rises.
An interesting plot and potential to be a great psychological thriller, but so many things screamed out as unrealistic as the plot went on. Jessie’s naivety really grated on me and saw the twist coming from the outset. A good read, but lots of plot improvement recommended.

Just, no. Jessica being trapped in the well was drug out way too long. And there's a random third person that had been killed at the end? That just happened to be Chloe's mother? I just didn't care for it.

Riveting and Engaging: "One Last Breath" Delivers a Captivating Thrill

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I extend my heartfelt thanks to P.S. Cunliffe and NetGalley for granting me the opportunity to delve into the mesmerizing world of "One Last Breath."

In this suspenseful narrative, Jessie, a documentary filmmaker, awakens in a well on a stormy night, echoing the tragic discovery of her best friend Amy's lifeless body 15 years prior. This chilling premise lays the foundation for a compelling tale that unfolds across multiple timelines, blending suspense, mystery, and emotional depth.

Cunliffe skillfully interweaves three timelines and snippets from the script of Jessie's documentary, creating a rich narrative tapestry. As Jessie grapples with escaping the well, investigates a recent murder in her hometown, and navigates the pressure to produce a third season of her documentary, the story gradually reveals the wrongful conviction of Connor and the intricate details of Amy's murder.

The characters, particularly Jessie and her husband Martin, are intricately developed, with well-defined backstories that lend depth to their motives and actions. While I managed to discern the identity of Amy's killer early on, the novel kept me captivated by withholding the motive and the connection to Evan's death. The pacing is commendable, maintaining a swift and engaging tempo throughout.

Despite my thorough enjoyment, I yearned for one more chapter to tie up loose ends, especially regarding the fate of the killer. Nevertheless, "One Last Breath" stands as a testament to Cunliffe's storytelling prowess, delivering a gratifying and suspenseful experience.

In conclusion, I highly recommend "One Last Breath" to those seeking a well-crafted and immersive thriller. My gratitude again to P.S. Cunliffe and NetGalley for allowing me to embark on this enthralling journey before its official release. Thank you for sharing this gripping tale with the world.

The story is difficult to follow because it is written with alternating timelines and alternating points of view.

The most exciting sections are with the main character, Jessica, trapped in a remote well and trying to get out as a storm rages and the water rises. A root has sliced into her leg.

Jessica is a true crime podcast reporter who gained fame by reporting on the murder of her childhood friend, Amy, who was trapped in the same well several years earlier. Her podcasts helped exonerate, Connor, another childhood friend.

Another murder takes place in the same woods not far from the well. Jessica considers posting a follow-up podcast, linking the two crimes. A girl named Chloe, who reminds her of Amy, befriends Jessica and becomes her assistant, learning how to produce podcasts.

Jessica's daughter, Freya, suffers from asthma, as did Amy. Chloe becomes friends with Freya and helps watch her.

Jessica's husband, Martin, stays behind with his job, preparing for an important presentation, while Jessica and Freya visit Jessica's father, Frank. Freya's asthma medication is misplaced. Martin has to drive all night through a storm to bring a backup inhaler.

Will he arrive in time to help Freya take her next breath? What about Jessica? Will someone save her in time for her to take her next breath?

You may find yourself holding your own breath as you keep turning pages to learn how it all turns out.

The characters are well-developed and the suspense is good. Hopping around with multiple timeliness and multiple points of view gets in the way of the story, however.

The middle of the book drags and feels too long and drawn out. Readers will be tempted to skip long sections to see if Jessica can get out of the well. It's difficult to care as much about anything else.

Several twists and surprises are waiting near the end and will reward the reader with a strong finish.

This book had so much potential but unfortunately didn’t quite hit the mark for me.

The pacing? A mess. It dragged on forever, then bam!—everything wrapped up in like… one page? Like girl, where was this energy earlier?? Jessie tying things together with one chapter left felt rushed and unsatisfying. Like, okay??

There were some beautiful themes—loyalty, perseverance, commitment, family—loved those in theory. But they got so repetitive it started to feel like background noise instead of emotional depth.

Yes, the ending shocked me. But not enough to make up for how uneven everything else felt. It was giving almost there but not quite.

Final thoughts: Loved the idea, liked the characters, didn’t love the execution. It felt incomplete and like it didn’t know what to do with itself. Cute moments? Yes. But overall? Eh.

Highlights (with ✨emotions✨)
• “What if I’m wrong about him? What if he really did kill Amy?”
Yesss has she been too naive?? 🫣
• “Imagine finding out everything you believed was a lie…”
Being deceived. Emotional damage. 🫠
• “Oh Connor. What have you done?”
Ugh blinded by love much?? 💔
• “Fiona is definitely in on it”
Whyyy is Fiona giving sus?? 🕵️‍♀️🧐
• “Connor became the scapegoat”
I just want him to heal and grow please. 🥺✨
• “Whatever happened between them led to her ending up in that well.”
I really don’t think Connor had anything to do with it!! 😤
• “I grew to enjoy the company of this quiet, clever man…”
Are they going to fall in love or what? 🥹💞

Next up…When She Returned

Time to leave this one behind and dive into my next read! Hoping for better pacing, deeper development, and less frustration.
Manifesting a 5-star experience this time!
Let’s gooo! Stay tuned.

One Last Breath by P S Cunliffe
Narrated by Alix Dunmore, Ethan Kelly

I received an advance review copy for free thanks to NetGalley and Bonnier UK Audio and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Blurb

Jessie wakes to darkness, cold, and the rain beating down on her. She reaches out, and her hands meet hard stone.

Suddenly she knows where she is. Deep in the woods, far underground, at the bottom of the well where her best friend's lifeless body was found fifteen years ago. After returning to her hometown to investigate a new murder, she now finds herself poised to become the killer's next victim.

My Opinion

This book is full of twists, but I did see one of the big reveals coming. Told with multiple viewpoints in multiple timelines, this thriller will have you guessing until the very end. This book was one that I had originally dismissed, but I am so glad I changed my mind. A real rollercoaster of a plot that had me on the edge of my seat.

Jessie wakes up in the bottom of a well that’s rapidly filling with water. She knows she’s in the well where her best friend’s body was found 15 years ago. The person who put Jessie down there now says she has to tell the truth if she wants to get out. But what is the truth, and will she stay alive long enough to tell it?

This is my final “it’s spring break so let’s skip the TBR jar and pick what I’m excited to read” book, and I’m a little disappointed in this one. My book group raved about it, but I have mixed feelings. Told in alternating POVs between Jessie in the present, Jessie in the days leading up to the present, Martin (her husband) in the present, and the script/interviews from Jessie’s documentary about her friend’s death, I found it a bit confusing when it switched POVs and it took me a bit to remember where we had left off. I liked the chapters where Jessie was stuck in the well (present) the best, as they were gripping and tense. I’m not sure what really kept me from connecting to the rest of the book. I did like the story! I don’t know. By the end, I liked parts of the resolution although part of it was obvious from pretty early on in the book. But the final reveal was surprising, I just wish it had tied things up a bit better. If you’re old enough to remember Baby Jessica being stuck in the well in the 80s, it gave me shades of that. Overall, it wasn’t a bad book, I think my expectations were just too high.

One Last Breath by P S Cunliffe an audiobook narrated by Alix Dunmore, Ethan Kelly is totally addictive psychological thriller that gripped me from the start! Alix Dunmore did such a brilliant narration from the start! All the heart-pounding moments she read with such emotions that you could feel it!
Absolutely loved the twists! It is always enjoyable when there is more than one twist that is tangled in the past secrets! And in some way, I felt that this book was written in a way that if the author wanted, there could be potential for a sequel. Let's wait and see.

Documentary filmmaker Jessie dedicated her career to finding her best friend Amy's kiIIer as she believes that Connor was falsely accused. She manages to prove he is innocent but not everyone agrees with this so hate around grows and Jessie puts herself and Conner in a dangerous position.
When Jessie wakes up deep in the well (the same well where Amy's body was found fifteen years ago) she can't remember how she got there but she knows that she has limited time until her last breath.
Past and present timelines introduce characters from different perspectives, mistakes are made and secrets are kept. Some secrets can be deadly dangerous if get into the wrong hands... is it too late for Jessie?

Thank you #NetGalley and #BonnierUKAudio for a copy of #OneLastBreath!

Didn’t love didn’t hate but my appreciation for the story dwindled as the narrative progressed. Two-dimensional characters didn’t help - with protagonist Jessie becoming more and more unlikeable - ditto her murdered bestie Amy.

The writing was totally mediocre and lacklustre and could’ve done with a decent edit and a lot of tightening up … many things were repeated ad nauseam and drawn out to a ridiculous degree.

The inclusion of script inserts seemed a tad try-hard, and could’ve been put to better use as a narrative device.

IDK whether I’ve missed a key plot point - but I’m confused as to how Chloe knew that Jessie and co, teenage versions, were responsible for her mother’s death. I doubt that I’ve missed some logical explanation given how repetitive the writing was - and how much the author loved to drum in every single piece of information - but I was also skimming parts towards the end so it’s possible. Also - another totally random and unrelated death thrown in at the 11th hour that turns out to be central to the whodunnit? Oh please.

The grand reveal was hohum. And would’ve been so much more effective if the author could’ve refrained from her verbosity at the end - the last ten or so pages could’ve been easily deleted.

All up, a pretty forgettable read.

Jessie has returned to her hometown of Westhaven. She is seeking answers to the murder 15 years ago of Amy Barnes, her best friend. Jessie though appears to have another motive in that she is also a true crime filmmaker and there has recently been another murder with similarities to Amy. We then cut to a week later and Jessie’s life is in imminent danger. She is trying frantically to live for her five-year-old daughter Freya. The whole story is told from multiple perspectives and time frames, including excerpts from Born Killer which is the documentary Jessie made about Amy’s murder.
This is standard mystery fare which has been done hundreds of times before. The multiple perspectives are not quite as seamless as they should be and I find the excerpts from Jessie’s documentary rather irritating. The characterization was not badly formulated, although I did guess correctly the perpetrator just over halfway through.
A good murder mystery to take away on holiday, but not quite to my taste.
My thanks to NetGalley, P S Cunliffe, and Embla books for the ARC in exchange for an open and honest review.

EXCELLENT psychological thriller! All the way to the very last line of the book. This was wonderful!

Jessie is a documentary filmmaker, and has done two seasons of a documentary called Born Killer. It was in regards to her best friend Amy who was murdered when they were in high school. A friend of theirs Connor was in prison until her documentary convinced the authorities that he was not responsible for her death. Now 15 years later, Jessie is back in her hometown to investigate a new murder that took place in the same woods where her friend Amy was killed.

This book has so many amazing twists and turns. There’s Chloe, a young girl who coincidentally dresses and wears her hair like Amy used to. She becomes Jesse’s assistant. There’s Connor, who is living back in town at his grandmother‘s place, but the town people don’t believe that he is innocent. And then there is Jessie, her husband Martin (who was bullied by Connor when they were kids) and their daughter Freya.

Fabulous book! A strong five stars! I had never read anything by this author before, but I will definitely be seeking out more of his books.

This book blew my mind! It was so well written and I love the premise of the story. I like when a book has a timeline and different pov's. I like the reference to Jessica Mclure - the baby in the well - as I know about that. Also it build suspense knowing that Jessie is in the well and the timeline shows how long til certain events.

Amy, Jessie's friend goes missing and is found at the bottom of the well but why did she go out to the woods on her own? Was she on her own? Was she pushed or did she fall? You think you know then your theories gets blown apart when you least expect it!

Jessie gets caught up trying to find Amy's killer and get's herself in trouble in the process, you get so wrapped up in the story and so involved with the characters and it build a real backstory and I loved it!

I love Freya and her relationship with Jessie and Chloe. The connection between Jessie, Martin, Connor and Amy throws up suspicion and it's such a good read! You know it's good when you get past half way in one sitting!

Would recommend this!
