Brownie Snoddy is visiting the Snoddy Mansion for Spring Break! Where Brownie goes, mayhem is sure to follow. Possibly destruction, terror, pandemonium, and anarchy might follow, too! He’s got his hands on a fedora, a stack of hardboiled mystery novels, and is ready to squirt metal at the nearest evil perpetrator, even though his reliable stun gun has been appropriated. When Janie, the niece of Willodean Gray the beauteous sheriff’s deputy, shows up to participate, all heck breaks loose. There’s mysteriously missing stuff! There’s galvanized goings-on! There’s things a ten-year-old boy and an eight-year-old girl with a penchant for all-things police, want to get in on. Even Bubba and Miz Demetrice can’t stop the serious sleuthing of Brownie and the dame!
C.L. Bevill has been in the U.S. Army, cleaned floors, a graphic illustrator, a therapist, and a stay at home mother. She lives in the Alabama area with her husband and daughter and keeps plugging away at the next great American novel.
CL Bevill arranges words like no other writer I've ever read. She can make the mundane inane and hilarious, bumbling characters endearing, wrong seem right. If that doesn't hook ya...I cant talk you into reading her. But read her anyway.
This year, I’m trying to get through many of the short story/half-step books in the series I read, and this was on my list because I’m several full-length books ahead of this point in the overall story.
This story features Brownie, Bubba’s 10-year-old nephew, who is spending a school break with Bubba and his momma, Miz Demetrice. The boy has recently devoured books featuring Golden Age detectives, and his goal in life is to become a PI like Sam Spade. When Willowdean’s 8-year-old niece, Janie, joins the fun, the two kids decide that they need a mystery to investigate.
What follows is typical of this series, and made me chuckle more than once. It was pretty easy to figure out what was going on and who was responsible, but it was fun anyhow, and I can’t wait to get back to the full-length books in this series.
This is a book for all ages to read, it's fun and at the same time interesting. The mystery holds to the end of the Book. A parent or Grandparent might enjoy reading this to a grade school child. The book is also enjoyable for an Adult looking for some fun light reading.
Loved all the Bubba books so far & this was really nice having one from a different characters point of view. plus Brownie rocks 😁 I guessed the 'perp' at about 80% but only after authors hints!
Another cute little story with the same characters as the other Bubba books. This one is about the nephew who wants to be a detective. He and his little friend actually solve the mysteries!
This is book 3.5 in the series. Brownie has come to Pegramville to stay at the Snoddy Estate over spring break. It turns out that Willodean's niece, Janie, has come to stay with her aunt. Unfortunately, the sheriff's office is short-handed and "Auntie Wills" has to work. So, Janie comes to spend the days at the estate with Brownie, Mis Demetrice patted Brownie down when he arrived, searching him and removing anything that could be used as a weapon and all sharpies. She also required him to sign a statement promising not to do stuff and gave him a map with clues to find hidden treasures and a digital camera so he could take a picture and prove he really found it. That lasted about 2 days, so she gave him a stack of old Raymond Chandler and Dashiel Hammett mysteries. After which, Brownie decided he wanted to be a shamus and found an old fedora in the closet to wear with his Sunday suit. This was about the time that Willodean needed to bring Janie over. Miz Adelia was complaining her favorite spatula was missing, so the two decide to hunt for it. Bubba is not really in this book much except for glimpses where his path crosses that of the kids - but those glimpses are hilarious! I don't know if all will be explained about Bubba in the next book or it will be in the forgotten past. Brownie and Janie are as entertaining as Bubba. They discover other people are missing things, so begin a full-blown investigation into the "disappearances" - AND solve it!
Copied from Amazon Brownie Snoddy is visiting the Snoddy Mansion for Spring Break! Where Brownie goes, mayhem is sure to follow. Bubba`s young cousin Brownie is back for a visit with Bubba and his mother, and having solved the scavenger hunt they had set up to keep him busy in the first day, he is handed a detective mystery to read to keep him occupied. Suddenly he decides he needs to become a hardboiled detective, complete with fedora. Willodeen`s niece is also visiting, and becomes his sidekick--or is he hers? With her knowledge of police procedures she is more than willing to take the lead. No murder here, but it´s a cute little story.
This novella made me laugh. I met Brownie in Bubba and the 12 Deadly Days of Christmas and Janie in Bubba and the Missing Woman. The combination of these two characters (and their interactions with other people in the family and town) made for a delightful book. Brownie's take on Sam Spade was spot on. It was a nice little mystery for the duo (and the reader) to solve.
If you like mysteries, give this series a whirl. This book is a solid 4.5 stars. I rounded it up because the mystery played fair with the reader.
What a treat to visit with the Snoddy family again. Brownie was just as entertaining as ever. Janie joins him on the adventure of solving some items that are missing and seem to somehow be connected. Bubba and Miz. Demetrice and Willodean all show up and play a part in the only book I can remember recently that was just for entertainment and didn't require me to think or want to throw my reading device. Just pure joy.
This was #3.5 in the Bubba series. A very charming and witty book. I learned to appreciate Brownie and Janie alot more than the last books. Even though this was a lot shorter than the other books, I enjoyed it just as much especially with the very sweet ending. On to the next Bubba book SWEETHEART!! Happy Reading :)
A very enjoyable entry in the Bubba Snoddy series. Bubba's 10-year old cousin-once-removed (or is he a second cousin?) Brownie reads Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler, watches Bogart in "The Maltese Falcon" and decides to become a gumshoe. He and Willodean's 8-year old niece Janie set out to find out who's stealing beloved items from the residents of Pegramville.
This is told from the perspective of a precocious 9 year old but in such a way that adults get the view of what adults are thinking and doing. It was a quick, enjoyable read (interesting to read this one after the Dial M book I just read by this author).
Unfortunately, I do not. I prefer the antics of supposed adults. I finished just because I wanted to stay with the series. I'm sorry, but I really didn't enjoy it like I have the other books in the series. Different strokes.
Love this novella. I can usually figure out the "perp", but not this time. I did know that Precious was "in the family way" but didn't put it altogether. It was a fun book.
I was side-tracked with other reading, but back into "....the Dame" and will be done all too soon. I've gotten a kick out of the Bubba books. The first was my fav until now. I'm really enjoying Brownie. I'm giving it a five-star, but that's my mentality. Different strokes.
A short one in the always enjoyable and amusing Bubba series. Silly and fun and a quick read - I do wonder what all Bubba was getting up to, what with the black eye and bombs.... but this was about young Brownie - maybe the next Bubba book will answer those questions.
Bubba's 10-year-old cousin, Brownie, is back ...in cahoots with Willodean's 8-year-old niece. The two do their best to track down who is stealing items around the area. Very cute story.
A fun book that would be great for pre-teen, teens and adults to read. It's really a wonderful introduction to the Bubba series, even though it happens afterwards. It stands alone quite well.
Gotta admit Brownie is really growing on me. Loved the LOL descriptors - without doubt the most creative I have ever read! Looking forward to spending my lunch hours with the next Bubba book.
