I don’t think a terse plot synopsis could have really prepared me for Derendrea’s Valkyrie, a supernatural/sci-fi erotic thriller that has a propulsive, go-for-broke energy that defies expectation. When described, the narrative itself seems relatively simple: a reluctant hero (Jason) stumbles upon the unconscious body of a demoness/vampire hybrid (the titular Valkyrie), takes her back to his place, and guides her on a journey toward discovering her true nature. But Derendrea’s unbridled imagination often moves faster than we can compute, and she crafts the sort of swift, breezy erotic romance that makes all of its minor plot inconsistencies—say, how did Jason keep Valkyrie a secret for so long?—virtually irrelevant.
But the breakneck pacing of this short novelette does not detract from the sexual chemistry between its principle characters; rather, Derendrea lets everything simmer on a deliberate slow burn that makes the inevitable “climactic moment” especially rewarding. If anything, the book uses the bizarre plot twists and narrative cul-de-sacs to further build the erotic tension between its characters. It becomes almost too much to bear. The closing moments of this book—which I won’t spoil—are poignant, introspective, and deeply erotic. Revelations intertwine with an erotic “quelling of the beast,” and sex ultimately becomes a cathartic and curative act. The somewhat abrupt conclusion—which some will find frustrating, no doubt—only emphasizes that fact.
I should also mention that I listened to Valkyrie as an audiobook, which can be purchased on Audible.com. I was very impressed with the production. Roberto Scarlato has a strong, authoritative voice that adds a great sense of urgency to the narrative. He also does a great job with the sex scenes—sensual, empathetic, with great pacing. I would recommend this book for his performance alone.

I LOVED Valkyrie! This book grabbed me from the first sentence and didnt let go. When I wasnt reading it I was thinking about it. This book had it all! Suspense, a sweet love story, mystery, drama, sizzling sex and a unique paranormal component! I dont want to give the plot away so I will just say I loved it. This is definity worth the read and my favorite by this author so far. If the cover interests you at all, the story will leave you breathless and complety satisfied. I highly, highly recommend this book!
