I have heard these lines so many times since my childhood that they are engraved on my mind. This is a famous Marathi poem by Trimbak Bapuji Thombre aka Balkavi.
Ti fulrani is inspired from the famous playPygmalion by George Bernard Shaw. The Main characters are Manjula, Prof. Ashok Jahagirdar and Dr. Vishwanath Joshi.
Manjula earns money by selling flowers. As born and brought up in slums, her unladylike mannerisms and language are raw & rough. Prof Ashok Jahagirdar is a professor of phonetics who believes that impeccable speech is the most important element of any language. He accepts the challenge given by Dr. Vishwanath Joshi, he can train a flower girl to pass Manjula as royalty by teaching her to assume a veneer of gentility.
Manjula who is impressed with professor's grasp of language and fluency wants to learn to speak like him so she can do even better accepts the challenge and in turn can impress the professor.
Pula has made few changes to the original play by Shaw and given us a Marathi classic play which has made a permanent home in every Marathi person's mind and heart.
George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion is well known play where a professor of phonetics makes a bet that he can train a flower girl to pass for a duchess at an ambassador's garden party by teaching her to assume a veneer of gentility, the most important element of which, he believes, is impeccable speech. P.L has translated the drama in Marathi with few changes in the plot of the play suitable for marathi background & culture.
‘Ti Fulrani’ - a play written by P.L Deshpande is based on G.B Shaw’s play, ‘Pygmalion’. The story revolves around Manjula, Prof. Ashok Jahagirdar and Dr. Vishwanath Joshi. Manjula earns her livelihood by selling flowers, having been born and brought in slums, her mannerisms and language are raw and unladylike. Prof Ashok Jahagirdar, on the other hand, is a professor of phonetics who believes that exemplary speech is the most important element while taking the appearance of gentility. He accepts the challenge given by Dr. Vishwanath Joshi, to train Manjula and present her in front of the elite class as royalty. Manjula who longs to speak like the rich people so she can work in the Florist shop accepts the challenge too. The whole play revolves around the relationship dynamics between Ashok and Manjula.
P.L Deshpande yet again displays he is the master of observation and finer human sensibilities. The best part about the book is the detailed characterization about Manjula without writing much about her. You can’t help but love her for fieriness, intelligence, street smartness, childlike innocence and yearning to be better not just for herself but for Ashok. Will opposites attract? Grab this one and find out 😊!
Absolutely stunning, historical play in marathi, created records in marathi theatre. Never tired of reading it again and again. One of my favourite writer.
Transformation of a flower selling girl Manjula to Manjushri devi is just beautiful.
