A 19 chapter manga adaption of the original Bakeneko arc.
A spin-off of 2006's horror anthology series Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales, Mononoke follows the character of the medicine seller as he continues to face myriad supernatural perils.
Mononoke takes place during the Edo Period Japan with the four class system, Samurai being the highest class and merchants (such as the medicine seller himself) being in the lowest class. Only Samurai were permitted to carry swords, which is why it comes as a shock to many of the characters that the medicine seller would be carrying a sword.
Since Mononoke is my favorite anime, I had pretty high expectations. Sadly, I was disappointed with the manga. But, it’s still Mononoke, so I have to give it at least 3 stars.
For once I think the anime was better than the manga. This is just one story, one in which a cat mononoke haunts a feudal house and destroys a wedding. This is actually referenced in the anime I believe. It was pretty good, I mean it was how you would expect an episode of the anime to play out, but it didnt bring anything new or different to the table with the manga medium, besides a few interestingly stylized panels.
will always be one of the favourites to re-read, to re-watch. lovely, lovely art. lovely ugly people. the story is the focal point and the main character the background. also, one wil come to the conclusion that it is never wise to piss off cats.
I loved the anime so I'm not surprised that I loved this manga as well! I got sucked in so fast! The plot is way darker than I expected but I think it balanced humour and darkness well.
I did think some of the panels are hard to decipher.
For those that are weary of reading this because they already watched anime, the story is different but very much in the same vain. A great spin-off! The styles are a great match too!
I haven't watched the anime yet, so I thoroughly enjoyed this. The art style is beautiful too, but I've heard the anime is way better, so I have high hopes.
suspense-mystery drama. the illustrations are lovely, in a creased, papery, rough, precise, ink way. lovely stylisation. i watched the anime first, i highly recommend both reading and watching.
A young bride is murdered on her wedding day, and the only suspect is the mysterious and uninvited Medicine Man, wielding a blade that banishes Mononoke - but unless he can learn their form, truth and reason, no one will escape their wrath. Ninagawa adapts the popular anime arc into a somber but darkly entertaining read, short but bittersweet with a flare for enjoyably tense drama. Where did this Mononoke come from, and for what purpose is it haunting the loved ones of the deceased?
