Curling up with a good book is one of life's great joys-and it is never too early to introduce that pleasure to children. The selections in this elegant volume are designed to be read aloud in ten minutes or less, or to be devoured by developing readers on their own. READ-ALOUD CLASSICS includes fairy tales from Hans Christian Andersen and the Brothers Grimm, and selections from The Black Stallion, Kipling's Just-So Stories, The Story of Dr. Doolittle, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, The Chronicles of Narnia, Little Women, and many more, reflecting a diversity of styles, cultures, and subject matter. Full-color illustrations throughout-many drawn from the original books-enhance reading enjoyment.
This was a library find for us and I'm reeeeeeally struggling with not purchasing it. We have a ton of poetry anthologies already, but this one is so special! I love the arrangements, the size of the book (it's a great one to lay in your lap to read aloud while children look at the gorgeous illustrations), the illustration selections and the information about the poets. My 9 year old asked if we could just re-read it as soon as we finished. Alas, we had to return it so we'll be choosing another poetry anthology from our own shelf.
If you were going to pick one book of poetry to start your children off with, this would have my vote. Has a great range of topics and styles with beautiful illustrations.
This poetry book is a great read for children as well as adults. The collection of poems are well rounded touching many subjects in life.I appreciated the tone in the illustration, the colors are mild and most of the pictures resemble porcelain dolls. The content is arrange in such away that one could easily choose from their interest.
The Wind
I saw you toss the kites on high And blow the birds about the sky, And all around I heard you pass, Like ladies' skirt across the grass- O wind, a blowing all day long, O wind, that sings so loud a song! I saw the different things you did, But always you yourself you hid. I felt you push, I heard you call, I could not see yourself at all- O wind, a-blowing all day long, O wind, that sings so loud a song! O you that are so strong and cold, O blower, are you young or old? Are you a beast of field and tree, Or just a stronger child than me? O wind, a blowing all day long, O wind, that sings so loud a song!
This book is a collection of poems that were specifically selected to be read aloud to children. Each poem is also only supposed to take about ten minutes to read out loud. The book has poems from many authors, including Emily Dickinson, William Shakespeare, Robert Frost, and Lewis Carroll. There is also a variety of topics, some about nature, some about people, some are funny, and some tell a story.
I really love the variety of poetry in this book. I also love how it includes a variety of famous poets, which will expose kids to their work at a young age, since they will probably encounter these poets again later in life. It is a relatively big book, so I think as a teacher I will be able to find different poems for every need in this book. I would love to keep it on hand in case I decide to read a poem to my class, so it is definitely a book I will have to buy to keep in my classroom. I think elementary students would love it!
"Read Aloud Poems for Young People" is full of poems of different lengths. The illustrations for some of the poems are simple and well drawn. There is an index of "subjects" and all of the poems under those subjects.
Poem: The Cow
The friendly cow all red and white, I love with all my heart: She gives me cream with all her might, To eat with apple tart.
She wanders lowing here and there, And yet she cannot stray, All in the pleasant open air, The pleasant light of day;
And blown by all the winds that pass And wet with all the showers, She walks among the meadow grass And eats the meadow flowers.
