I gave this title 4 stars because it was a beautiful book about an amazing artist who I knew nothing about. The Heard Museum just opened an exhibit of a collection of her etchings. I thought I would gather some background information and discovered this book. The author, Jay Scott, spent three years interviewing Ms. Hardin, the last three years of her life. He also interviewed her mother, husband and daughter, greatly enriching the story that he tells. Helen Hardin was unique, living between two worlds, Santa Clara Pueblo and American, culturally, spiritually, and physically. And somehow she managed to express that in all of her paintings. She enrolled in a drafting class in high school, her only choice because she had already completed all of the available art classes. There she learned how to use her tools, the tools that would define her art. The book includes many examples of her work, and they are wonderful.
one of my favorite artists from one of my favorite places on the planet. the first time i saw her work in santa fe at the silver cloud gallery--i cried.
