Studio Kawaii is the artist name of Ana Maria and Mercedes, two Spanish twin sisters.
They started to work as mangakas in 1997, and published their first works in Spanish manga and anime magazines, like “Dokan” and “Minami”. However, their first well-known work came in 2002, with their short story “Nocturne”, published in the Spanish yaoi magazine “Itaii Itaii” (SBC Ediciones), where they´re still publishing their works.
Their best known work up to now is “Treasure”, their first full-length graphic novel, published in the USA by Yaoi Press, Ltd. and in Germany by “The Wild Side”.
The first volume was first published in 2006 and the second one in 2007.
Currently, they´re working on "The Soul Chaser", a manga online for Inkblazers.com, while preparing other projects as well.
I wanted to make some clever pun about boy love, pirates and yarrrr! But I couldn't get it right in my head so it's just going to be my review. I've rated this book a lot less on this second read. Why I did love Treasure, I forgot that it's not even the whole book. And if your going to have sexy pirates, don't name them Ian or Alan! Nothing sexy about those names! In some scenes the author couldn't be bothered to draw their facial features in.
Then we have a bunch of adverts before we get to the next story 'A small Sacrifice', in which the guy goes from being completely shocked at the idea of man love, to loving it in no time at all. At least make their be some kind of struggle with his emotions. It wasn't a great story.
The last story is just a preview of 'Surge' which showed some promise but as it was just a preview it wasn't very long.
Another example of poorly plotted comics that are primarily geared solely to engineer a certain situation or scene to occur. Even the art seems only incomplete with many panels having little or no detail, often character faces are not even included. The main story deals with piracy on the high seas, and water features at least tangentially in the other stories, but I can't even say the real focus is only the relationships. The overall product seemed rushed, hurried and thrown together. While it is not completely lacking in entertainment value, it does offer little beyond what amounts to some hastily drawn sketches.
1st of a two part yaoi manga about pirates, freedom and love from the guys that gave us the far superior yaoi Gawain and the Green Knight short. Alan and Patrick are in love but Alan's family disapprove so the pair run away and join the navy. Ian, in love with Patrick, shoots Alan during a pirate raid and tells Patrick his lover is dead. Alan gets rescued by pirates, the only conditions - he takes the captain as his lover and becomes a pirate himself! Meanwhile distraught over his lover's 'death' Patrick turns to Ian for comfort and swears death to all pirates...
This does exactly what it says on the tin. Its a gay love story on the high seas. Melodrama at its most predictable. I'm not over fond of the simple childish artwork either. You could do worse, but its not the best in the field.
