Bred to believe in the war between angels and demons, Gabby has come to the conclusion that love is responsible for war, jealousy, and all the other deadly sins she can think of. So when she’s exiled to the middle of nowhere for getting kicked out of her fifth school for fighting, she doesn't expect to meet Jake. Much less fall in love. But Jake is quickly drawn to the eerie beauty of her violet eyes while Gabby is unsettled by their undeniable connection.
When a demon guardian comes to collect her soul, she refuses to give it up. She’s not a demon. She can’t be. Her father and twin brother are angels. The demon gives Gabby twenty-four hours to decide her allegiance, and then starts killing her short list of friends, leaving a message behind: She is the Second Sign.
As Gabby and Jake begin to unravel the mystery behind the Second Sign, she learns Jake may be the key to saving her soul. But it means a sacrifice has to be made that will change their lives forever.

A dark, twisted tale that will keep you yearning for more.
Gabby appears to be the average troubled high school student with too much energy to burn. Such a characteristic often leads her astray. But there is more to Gabby than just being a student and simply mischievous. And more about herself than even she knows.
The opening pages immerse the reader in a facade of religious references and icons, seemingly the darker side of faith. This could have been a risky subject in a young adult novel; however, as the first few pages turn, the story shows neither praise nor condemnation, but uses the characters and their inner motivations as the focal point. I found myself pondering along with the characters about beliefs and one's own soul. And that is when the story really began. This technique was clever because it not only gave valuable information the reader will need to know, but it also set the tone and mood for the entire story.
Arroyo has a beautiful writing style, ease of flow and imagination. The story is structured in multiple point-of-views, but mainly from the two main characters, Gabby and Jake. It works, as does the surprises that satisfy the appetite of any adventurous, mystery-twist loving reader.
Gabby and Jake's relationship is intense, yet an underlying pulse of sweetness and genuineness draws them closer - a need somewhat teen, but also new and never felt by either. Jake has that typical teen male attitude, attributing some of his worth to the number of girls he's dated and/or more. But he only holds slight arrogance, which is teasing and attractive.
Although otherworldly and even horror elements soon surface, threatening Gabby and all she's known, she still struggles with most of the same issues the average teenage girl does: Who am I? Where do I fit in? She's never felt at ease in her own skin or with anyone, not even her brother Max or her guardian Alder. The time would soon come when that must change, when she'd need to drop her barriers and let Jake in to she what she's made of.
As the tale unfolds and Gabby faces each new danger, Jake is drawn in deeper, stepping over the threshold of her walls, sensing a need for each other - a purpose larger than themselves. The climactic ending shocks and explodes, executing the power of friendship, love, and sacrifice.
What would you do if you believed in Heaven and Hell but they didn’t believe in you? And what about if you don’t believe in them, but they believe in you?
Gabby is different in many ways: she’s not all human... her father is an Angel, and so is her twin brother. Also, whenever she touches someone... she can feel their emotions. Oh, did we mention Gabby has the worst luck ever? Her birthdays are not a day you wanna spend near her, bad things happen.
When the summer arrives, Gabby is sent back to the middle of nowhere to her family lake house and on her first day she meets Jake, who takes an immediate liking to her, even when she so desperately wants to keep him away.
The first chapter of the book hint at the dark side if this story and the dirty work of Angels and Demons alike. Everyone has free will and they will influence you at the best of their capacity to get your soul. But as soon as they get to the lake, the romance and connection between Gabby and Jake jumps at you. Their relationship is really beautiful. Gabby wants to protect Jake from her world, without knowing how much he belongs in it.
But that’s not all... a Demon is after Gabby, he tells her she’s the Second Sign... but what does that mean? With her brother and guardian MIA, Gabby has no choice but to trust Jake with a few secrets and ask for his help. Until the Demon marks her and gives her 24hs to call her, and starts killing people.
This book has a bit of everything: Romance, Mystery, Good Guys, Bad Guys, in between guys that mess with your head, and some very creepy horror-movie-like scenes... like that Legion scene with the old Lady? Yeah... that creepy!
Oh And the ending... is a cliffhanger alright! I didn't see that coming, it fits and leaves you hanging for more.
Miss Arroyo’s writing is really good, the story pulls you in from the beginning and the characters are very interesting. Everyone has a little bit of background into it that makes the story even better.
I've read a few angel and demon books in the past couple of years; Hush Hush, A Beautiful Dark and Rapture come to mind. There have been the stories of good vs evil, light vs dark, fallen angels, demons running amok, etc. This story combines elements of all these if a way that creates a chaotic unique story that can be read in any given time and still holds all its elements in place.
Gabby and her twin brother Max, have been motherless since birth. Their father is nonexistent and their guardian, who only seems to be around for Max, is more a background presence than a nurturing figure. This seems to leave Gabby getting into trouble more times than not. For the summer she is basically on her own at the summerhouse in a small community. An outsider and his sister end up there for the summer too, again without supervision and this is where the story plays out.
From the beginning I found myself rooting for Gabby, with all her problems and nobody to turn to. Going through the changes she has dealt with in her family and their heritage would not be easy for anyone, and for someone also going through the natural confusions of the teen years this amplified things ten fold. She needed someone there for her, she needed someone to confide in, someone to protect her, someone to just be there for her and she was left to her own devices. Jake, strong willed, compassionate, and also dealing with an unusual home life, was the perfect match for her.
The story had many twists in the story, and sometimes I had to reread paragraphs to get the full picture, as it should be, in focus. There were a few times that things could have been resolved by just telling someone what they saw or just by picking up the phone that just didn't seem to fit right. Characters were brought in than quickly brought out that could have just stayed out entirely and made things flow a bit more. There were also times that things were explained all over again, just a paragraph or two later that seemed to distract me from what was actually happening in the story.
As I had said earlier, this story resonates to the point that I could have read this twenty years ago or come back and read again twenty years from now and the characters, scenery, story would not be futuristic nor outdated. The story itself combines romance, personal conflicts, theological beings, action, regrets and wraps itself into a package that is hard to peel oneself away from. It makes you think about things but not in a bible thumping sort of way and paves the way into a possible next phase of the story while also leaving you content if the story ends here.
Do I recommend this book? Yes, but not for just anybody. This book is not for someone looking for a light read. This book has some very dark moments in it and some very deep issues being dealt with. Fans of The Exorcist, or any scary movie like that, this book is right up your alley. Fans of The Left Behind series, again, this would satisfy you.
For those of you wondering, I received this book in exchange for an honest review. Receiving a book this way does not hinder me from being totally honest.
The Second Sign is an intriguing story with fascinating characters and epic plot. Angels and demons exist and live amongst us in this story. As the plot unfolds you find that the power of persuasion and free will decide ones future. And most importantly that love can set you free.
Free will is a major factor throughout this book. Even though you would think that angels and demons have a genetic disposition to be good or bad they still have free will. That is how fallen angels are declared. But Gabby is not a fallen angel as you might think by the cover of this book, no. She is something entirely unique and unknown.
Now in her late teens Gabby has found it difficult to control her temper and it seems that bad luck follows her everywhere. The school year has come to an end and she is sent off to live at the lake house with her brother Max. This is where things turn for the worst and secrets are revealed. It is also where she meets Jake.
Jake is a devilishly handsome young man that has an innate fascination with daredevil stunts. When he meets Gabby for the first time it’s more than attraction at first sight. He can’t seem to stay away from her and her attempts at putting him at arm’s length are futile. Plus, he’s more connected to her world than she knows.
I enjoyed this book immensely but I have to say that there were a couple graphic murder scenes that made me cringe. It was a little too much on the dark side for me but it didn’t hurt the story at all just made it clear to me how horrific demons can be. What I love about this story the most is that this is more than your typical forbidden love story. This is the kind of love that could start an epic war between the forces of good and evil. The ending revealed so much and my mind is reeling. So much can happen and there is still too much to learn. I can’t wait to read the rest of this series. It’s going to be epic!
I really enjoyed this book, it was an interesting take on good vs. eveil, and free will and all that.
Free will is a major factor throughout this book. Even though you would think that angels and demons have a genetic disposition to be good or bad they still have free will. Unlike many other books with angels and demons, some of them do not have free will. These do and that is how fallen angels are declared. But Gabby is not a fallen angel as it may look by the cover, no. She is something entirely unique and unknown. I wont be telling you what, you need to find out on your own, by reading this great book.
I love books with angels and demons, and other creatures. I always find myself pulled into the book, and can’t stop reading. This also happened with this book. I also really like the cover, even if it’s a bit mis-leading , as I was thinking at first she was a fallen angel, by the cover alone.
The book really got intriguing when Gabby was sent to the cabin with her brother, and where she meets daredevil Jake. There is also more to Jake than she knows. I was instantly hooked.
I found the forbidden love in this fascinating, as it is different than most, it can actually start a war.
I found the few graphic murder scenes pretty dark and horrifying, but it does show us how awful the demons in this book are. It’s pretty dark, but I didn’t mind it. I am a paranormal fan.
I think the writing was top notch. I highly recommend this book. 5 out of 5 stars for me.
I was provided a copy of this book by the author for my honest review.
I received this book free in exchange for an honest review.
Wow! That was all that came to my mind when I finished this book. When I first started reading this book I didn't expect it to be so dark right from the beginning. I was hooked.
I loved the story. It was very well written, easy to read, solidly detailed. at some parts of the book surroundings and action was so very well described I had a feeling i was there (And it's written in 3rd person!).
I think characters are physically described really good. I liked their developing as well. And i find it fabulous the fact that every character has their role in developing the story.
I liked the end of the story too. I'm not going to spoil details because I don't want to destroy pleasure of reading to you guys. Still, I hope there will be a second book.
I think Elizabeth Arroyo is a really good writer and I'm looking forward to read more of her work.
*I would like to start out by stating that I was given this book, from the author, through the Never to Old for YA Group in exchange for an honest review.
It seems that I have a love/hate relationship with angel themed books. I don't know if this is because of my Catholic school upbringing (and all of the stories that were shoved down my esophagus) or because it seems to be so "hit or miss" with the angel books. Sometimes I receive an unexpected surprise and I fall in love with an angel story (Angelfall). Other times the story may capture me in the beginning, but then disappointments me towards the end with its predictable characters and overly formulated story line (Boundless). Needless to say, even though I found the blurb for The Second Sign extremely interesting, I still had some trepidation entering this story.
Elizabeth Arroyo did not disappoint me with her tale. The author opened up the story with Gabby, the heroine, already causing havoc. The fact that Gabby already knew that angels and demons exist on this plane was refreshing. The author did not have to spend half of the book helping the character discover herself. Even though Gabby did have some flaws, she was an overall positive female character that was able to take care of herself and those she cared about, even if at times her good intentions were misdirected.
Gabby's twin brother, Max, was a bit of an enigma. One of my only complaints about his character, is that I felt the author did not include enough of his back story. In return, this did leave some holes in the plot where Max was concerned. Not enough, mind you, to take away from the pleasure of this story, but I did feel it hurt the flow a bit. Otherwise, I found the relationship between the twins interesting and at times sweet.
"He looked human. Like the boy who untangled her hair from pines as she sobbed silently in the woods, or the boy who helped her with homework when she was ready to give up on kindergarten and become a ninja instead."
Gabby loved her brother, but she also felt that she was losing her connection with him.
Our hero, Jake, is your average teenage adrenaline junkie. He is banished for the summer with his older sister (aka babysitter), Jenna, to his father's hometown on the lake due to his adrenaline addiction. Jake is another well-rounded character. He is extremely protective of Gabby and his sister, but does not go all alpha on either of them. He has his share of issues, but overall is a pretty normal guy.
The story begins to take off when Jake decides to go introduce himself to the neighbors. Gabby, who happens to be said neighbor, is also exiled by her guardian and brother to their home on the lake for the summer. Of course, when they meet this is when one of my main dislikes occur. Instalove. I tend to love stories where the enemies become lovers or best friends finally figure out they were "meant to be" after years of angst. Instalove tends to be the bane of my reading existence. Thankfully, I found The Second Sign compelling enough to overlook the dreaded instalove between Gabby and Jake.
There is, of course, the usual angst within the relationship.
Gabby feeling scared
"...wanting so much to tell him she loved him too. But she couldn't. She didn't know what those words really meant except death. More people died for love than hate."
Jake getting all mushy
"But he couldn't let her go. She'd take the air with her, leaving him to suffocate."
and at times he became downright psychotic sounding
"He wanted her. He was meant to have her. She was made only for him."
But even with all the usual relationship turmoil, the story itself was full of enough twists and turns to keep me interested.
The main supporting characters are developed enough to add to the story. I wish there was more involvement of Jenna in the story. As with Max, I think she would have added more depth to the main characters and overall tale. The other minor characters also added to the story line. Obviously, they had to voice their concerns or opinions about the relationship between Jake and Gabby. Even Jake's emotionally unavailable father had to spout this little nugget to his son,
"Jake, love is the root of all evil because it leads people to do unspeakable things, stupid things, irrational things. Please tell me you do not love her."
Wow! Isn't daddy just a ray of sunshine! Surprisingly, Jake and Gabby do not listen to the sage wisdom of their elders and all hell breaks loose.
Speaking of hell...let me not forget the villains. There are several villains in The Second Sign. They are lovely, twisted characters that cause horror, mayhem and lead the story in interesting directions.
The ending actually surprised me and, quite frankly, ticked me off. I was not happy with what happened . There is also a cliff hanger. I had assumed this was a stand alone, but after that ending, which wow..., I do believe there will be another book in the Second Sign Saga coming soon.
I did originally fluctuate between 3 and 4 stars. There were some editing problems, but not horrible enough to effect the flow of the story. There was the dreaded instalove. Again, not enough to take away from the story. In the end, I decided the story was interesting and original enough that it definitely warranted 4 stars. I think that Elizabeth Arroyo is definitely a writer to watch and I am looking forward to her next book.
Great read and I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves either a good angel-demon story or a story with plenty of surprises.
Gabby has always known about angels and demons. After all she and her twin have an angel father. Gabby gets into a lot of trouble and after her fifth fight she is sent to live with her twin Max to a summerhouse. She soon meets Jake and he quickly likes her. She however fights her feelings for him as she believes love is the cause of all things. She soon has to turn to Jake as a demon comes for her saying she is part demon. She has 24 hours to decide which side she is on. The demon begins to kill her friends as a message to her and says she is the second sign. She now must choice between the angels and demons and figure out the second sign. She has help from Jake and now thinks he may be very a important part in her future.
This book is so wonderful. It is not your usually fluff or light book. It is a book that you really can sink your mind into as you read it. Gabby is so strong. Even if she has known about being an angel she still has her moments when something feels off about herself. She also has to deal with being a teen so she has double the problems. Getting thrown into this mess and usually having no one to turn to it is new for her to have someone to talk to like Jake. You can see her struggle with her feelings and see her grow to trust Jake when she doesn't really want to. Jake is what she needs. He hasn't had much a family life something they have somewhat in common. He helps Gabby as much as he can and tries to show her what he feels.
From the start you get to see this is going to be an intriguing book. It is one you have to take your time with and really not rush thru it. Not that it reads slow it just has so much going on. It will keep you guessing as it has many twists to the story and it is very well written. Action is always happening and it is really easy to love Gabby and Jake as you learn about each one. I knew it would be hard for Gabby to fall for Jake by that is what makes the story so great. You get a little bit of it all in this fantastic book. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a great angel/demon book that is a great read and not a light book. The author did a fantastic job with this book. The ending left me hanging and wanting more.
Favorite Lines “A stone baptismal fountain laid on the floor to his left, large enough to bathe a child or drown one depending on your intent.”
“Say it. I want you to say it,” he said softly. “I don’t know, all right. I don’t know.” He had some kind of cheesy grin that disappeared the moment she looked at him. “I can live with that.”
“If he stopped breathing now, if he died tomorrow on that jump, he’d lived a full life because he caught a glimpse of something more than love. It was a deep sense that all was right in the world. That he could touch the stars.”
“I won’t let you fall, Gabby, ever”
“Jake wasn't a believer in the divinity. Shit happens. Period”
“Why did God send him to her?”
Man what an amazing book! Angel and Demons have always been a favorite of mine so I was so looking forward to this book! It did not disappoint! My heart broke for Gabby having to live in Max’s shadow like she does. Learning her story brought tears to my eyes. Then she meets Jake and I finally think she’s been given something good and then it all falls apart! I don’t understand Angels sometimes they are so unforgiving even when a rule is broken for the right reason! It’s a touchy subject can you tell? Now on to the story. Gabby is a teenager well not like every other teenager she the daughter of an angel and her brother is an angel. I thought she was one too but she has a lot of anger and there is something different about her. She just wants normal! She can’t have that though. I think she would settle for just a little bit of happiness and when she meets Jake she thinks she might have found that! Things are going good for about a minute then tragedy happens all around her. People die and lie to her more than I can even keep track of. You know I won’t tell you what happens but picture this. Girl meets boy they fall in love then find out they are each on one side of good and evil! Gabby is daughter of Angel Jake is a son of a Demon DO I NEED TO SAY MORE!?!?! If you like Angel and Demon books then THIS IS BOOK FOR YOU!!!
FIVE DEMON ANGELS (borrowed from Cindy for this book)
I must be on an angel kick without realizing it, as this is the second angel/demon book I've read in less than a week! Even though the other one was Adult and this was YA, this one is definitely the darker of the two.
Take your typical YA angst, add in several huge secrets, some difficult powers, lots of death, and angels and demons and you get the gist of The Second Sign. Things change from moment to moment, and I was continually confused as to who the good guys and the bad guys were, and how everyone fit into the picture. To be honest, I am still a little confused. Which is both good and bad.
I like to be surprised confused, as long as I feel like I know what just happened at the end. It keeps me guessing and one my toes. And while there is some resolution (not a cliffhanger) at the end, I am still left wondering about a LOT of things. There were some secrets kept from the main characters, Gabby and Jake, that I don't understand. Of course I usually disagree with the secrets being kept from ANY character, there is usually some reasoning, no matter how stupid in my opinion, as to why those secrets are being kept. I didn't feel there was enough of an explanation as to why some of the secrets were kept. But they did make for a giant WTF moment at the end!
There were also a few character actions that confused me. I can make assumptions based on what happened later on as to why they acted the way they did, but they do a few 180's during the story that are never really addressed by them or the people around them.
Other than that, this is a very good, very dark book. I mean, people die. In horrible, gruesome, ways. And the author doesn't pull punches. She makes you see it, through the eyes of her characters. There is some good, but man ... the evil makes a serious appearance here.
Let me just say there better be a book two. And sooner rather than later would be nice. That ending, again not a cliffhanger, left me all flustered. I need more closure, and I need to know what happens next! Because, yeah. I can't tell you without ruining the whole story.
I abaolutely 100% loved this book. It kept me guessing and on the edge of my seat for the entire story, and still is. There is a great diverse range of characters that have many aspects to their personalities and many secrets amongst them. The story slowly unfolded adding more layers of intrigue and drama as it did. I have to congratulate the author on creating a story with heaps of depth and character that you don't often find in this genre. It was great to see a great story with so many dimensions. I feel as though the ending has left me with more questions than answers and am sincerely hoping that there will be a sequel to this book that will answer them for me.
Arroyo has written a wildly imaginative fantasy that immediately immerses you into a world where angels and demons inhabit the earth, hidden among humans, fighting behind the scenes in the classic battle of good versus evil. The plot is twisty and provocative with some intense, dark moments and a level of violence that make this an edgy YA series.
There are so many aspects of this novel that made it an enjoyable and absorbing reading experience. First of all the main cast of characters, Gabby, Max, Jake, Mir, and Pat are richly developed, complex characters with their fair share of flaws that make it hard to peg them as simply good or bad. Throughout the story, these characters continually challenge any assumptions I may try to make about them. Their motivations, thoughts, and behavior aren’t always predictable, and my feelings about them often fluctuated as their personalities emerged and their back stories and secrets are revealed.
As the protagonist, Gabby epitomizes the feelings many people have at various times in their lives, especially during the teenage years: frustration and disappointment that she can never measure up to her twin brother, Max, and a deep yearning to be understood and accepted. As the children of an angel and a human, both Gabby and Max have gradually developed their own supernatural powers that make it hard for them to fully fit in with their peers. Gabby, with her violet eyes and reluctance to touch others, feels like a “freak.” Her brother Max has been given his wings and has already begun fulfilling his angelic duties. Max’s angel powers elevate his compassion and ability to soothe others. In contrast, Gabby is a loner, quick-tempered, prone to violence, and, overall, not well-liked or accepted among her classmates. She often compares herself to Max and wonders, deep down, if she isn’t inherently just a bad person who will never be worthy of angel status.
However, her perception of herself and humanity in general begins to shift after she meets Jake, who takes one look at her and is mesmerized. Afraid of being rejected, Gabby tries her hardest to keep Jake at a distance, but he refuses to be deterred in his quest to get to know her. Right from the start, the attraction and connection between them is so fervent even they don’t fully understand its potency. As Jake and Gabby grow closer, Jake becomes Gabby’s light, drawing her out of her darkness, making her question who she can be, who she wants to be. Unfortunately, fate has other plans for Gabby and Jake, and no matter how hard they try, their romance just isn’t meant to be. The secrets they keep from each other only worsen their situation, and it’s heartbreaking to watch their relationship begin to unravel.
The story is told from both Gabby’s and Jake’s alternating POVs, and while this is wonderful in helping me to connect with their characters because I can understand and empathize with their thoughts, fears, insecurities, and even the torment that threatens to destroy them, it also left me just as much in the dark as they are about the major events to come. The clues are cryptic and the foreshadowing is so subtle that, at times, I had no idea what was going to happen next. I never really felt lost as I was reading; I just questioned how much I really understood about the overall scheme of the plot in its broadest context. I was often just as surprised as Gabby and Jake as they discover the roles they have been destined to play and become pawns to be manipulated by both angels and demons. Just when I get answers about one mysterious aspect of the storyline, another mystery surfaces, and I’m constantly trying to piece the puzzle together even at the end. I don’t always know who can be trusted and just how far Gabby and Jake will go to protect each other. Needless to say, this was anything but a mindless read.
The ending was unsettling for me because so many questions are left unanswered, but that is okay since the series is just beginning. Arroyo does a great job in delving into themes of free will and destiny as well as the power of love and sacrifice.
I received an ARC of this book from the author to provide an honest review.
There were some good ideas here - a mildly interesting, nonreligious take on heaven/hell and demons/angels, and some quite good gory horror scenes -- but unfortunately I spent my reading of this whole book waffling back and forth over whether or not I should bother reading this whole book.
I did ultimately finish it in the hopes that it would get better, but apart from the first few chapters, I was simply bored to tears. I was expecting equal parts paranormal and romance but got romance-romance-romance with some paranormal stuff bandied about once in a while, and mostly crowded near the end. The Insta-Love between Gabby and Jake was of the especially grating variety, because even though the story does (sort of kind of) give an actual reason for it, it's no excuse for their FEELINGS to take up almost the entire book. I think the first chapters were the best in large part because the two had not met yet! Gabby and Jake seemed like interesting people in their own rights then, and so did some of the others like Gabby's brother Max and Jake's sister Jenna, but as soon as they met, everybody got personality transplants. By the end of the book, I was so bored by the tedious love story that I couldn't care about anything else either.
This book also has some issues with sexual consent. Whether it's boys pressuring girls or girls pressuring boys, the casual ease with which everybody treats sexual misconduct is troubling. And one's ability and desire to remain friends with those who have tried to rape or molest? That should not be the yardstick by which one measures one's goodness as a person.
There were also many of the common indie-book problems with grammar, in particular all the awkwardly structured sentences I had to read twice to decipher. I'm sometimes willing to overlook this stuff to a certain extent in indie books that I find otherwise good, but less so in this case. Fixing some of these problems might have gone some way in fixing others; a real editorial eye might have caught all sorts of things from the grammar to the characterizations to the pacing.
Getting through this book was a real exercise in disappointment and time wasting. If only Arroyo had stuck to writing a real horror novel (with or without romantic elements). The gory horror scenes in this book were by far the best written, so that's clearly a talent begging to be tapped!
The Second Sign really took me by surprise. I didn’t really have any expectations of this book, other than the synopsis sounded interesting, but I’m so glad I took a chance on this. Poor Gabby has been essentially left to fend for herself since she was born, and this has damaged her in so many ways. She never knows who to trust, because she’s been moved and abandoned so many times. Gabby has always depended on her twin, Max, who is the golden child and can do no wrong. This bothered me on several levels because Gabby does not seem like a bad person, I’m left wondering why she is so exasperating to her guardians. It is eventually explained, but it really bothered me in the beginning and launched a protective streak in me. I wanted so badly to protect Gabby from all the secrets and lies that surrounded her. I kept hoping that someone in her family would have a redeeming quality, but so far I’m left thinking no. I did not like Max at all. I don’t care that he wasn’t supposed to interfere, blah blah blah. She is your sister, dude! You protect your family at all costs, and Gabby would have done anything for him. Proving once again that you can’t choose your family, because Gabby deserved so much better than Max and her father, Mir. I know that Mir saved her life, but it wasn’t because he wanted her, he only did it because Gabby’s mother begged him too. I wish her mother had stuck around, seemed like she would never have left Gabby to fend for herself. The whole love thing with Jake was a little awkward, and I know it was supposed to be. At first, I felt like they were falling in love to quickly, and I was rolling my eyes in exasperation. Then it became explained, and I understood why the emotions were so powerful, and they felt like they had no control. They really didn’t! This was probably one of my favorite things about the book, because it took a YA cliche and made relevant and real. The only thing that keeps me from giving this book 5 stars is just that it was a little rushed at the ending, and I’m still not quite sure what’s going on with Jake and Gabby. However, I look forward to the sequel!
You’re going to laugh at me when I say I’m not really an “angels” reader but I like demons. And all I can say right now is “ooooooh this is getting good!!” I mean this one twisted me! At first I thought angels were bad, then good, then bad, now good… I’m very pleased with this book. It’s quite different from the outlook of angels vs demons but not only that but the story surrounding Gabby! I’m just heartbroken I think.
Gabby was a very unique character. Her and her twin, Max are halflings- human and angel… Except Gabby doesn’t think herself an angel because Max gets wings and leads a life complete different from her. She has these abilities that she thinks of as a curse. She’s pushed everyone away to keep herself and them safe. She is constantly lied to or left out. At first I felt sorry for her am then I felt empowered by her. I think she’s endured so many bad things that she will now know the good. And boy does she have a heap load ahead.
Jake is a very complicated situation. As well as his father and sister. And then Pat. Man we should be playing Clue with how much all the characters twist and it’s only king to get more complicated. I’m wondering if this will be a series because I’m really hoping the end was not the actual end. It’s not a cliff hanger but there’s an opening that I hope the author runs with.
I’m going to say that there’s enough mystery going on that could have any mystery fan salivating. The paranormal romance part is also a big player. I’m so hoping this continues. And it’ll hook you, just like it hooked me. I was thinking it would be another angels fighting the big bad demons, but that’s not the only case here. There’s so much that happened but so much more to come. I need to know what will happen with Jake and I’m glad with everything in the open with Max and I’m dying to know what Gabby will do with her new “ability”! So, if the author reads this- please tell me you’re going to continue and when can I get my paws on book two!! 5 MYSTERIOUSLY DEVIOUSLY BEAUTIFUL PAWS!!
*Warning there may be spoilers in this review, but big ones will be marked.*
Favourite Character: None I can think of that didn't anger me.
Now, just before I start, I want to say that I have never skimmed through a book before. Not even for one page. Never.
I'll try to keep this review as calm as possible. Now, to start of, I'll admit, I did really like this story. Oh, up until 95%, though. I probably would have given it three/four stars. I usually do long reviews for r2rs but not for this one.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review from the "Never too Old for Y.A." group on goodreads.
Gabby is different. She’s not quite human, and, even though her brother and father are angels, she’s not one of those either…she’s somewhere in-between. Bad luck and demons seem to follow her around and she can feel people’s emotions just by touching them. Not your typical teenage girl.
Just like Gabby, this story is different. Yes, it has your typical YA romance. Gabby and Jake are attracted to each other immediately. But, unlike the other stories, this romance comes from a very different place. The twists and turns in this book keep you slightly off balance, never quite knowing what’s coming next. And…it also has a dark side. There are demons that claim souls and will stop at nothing to get what they want, including murder, there are life and death decisions, and there is impending war. This book may not be for the squeamish…the author doesn’t shy away from describing the murders (and the murderers’ thoughts) in detail. But, in the end, even someone who is faint of heart like me will understand that this tactic adds to the story.
To be honest, I enjoyed the second half of the book much more than the first. In the beginning, I was fearful that this would turn out to be simply a teen romance with some angels and demons thrown in. However, once the mystery started to take shape and the characters found themselves knee-deep in the adventure, the book picked up speed and grabbed my interest. I will also admit that I was a bit confused in the beginning (and, in some ways, I still am) about the Second Sign and what it all meant, but that’s part of the appeal of the book…no easy answers here. I’m sure we’ll be provided more details as this series continues. And I’m sure that those demons are not done wreaking their havoc, so there’s definitely more adventure to come!

I have to give this a WOW straight up. I have to say that I am pleasantly surprised that I liked this book as much as I did. I am not usually into Angels and Demons and that sort of story line, but this book sucked me in almost from the start and I couldn’t put it down. I was a little concerned with the first chapter being so dark and gory, but after that I really was drawn into the story and loved every minute. I think I might just read a few more Angels and Demon stories after all.
I really enjoyed the main character Gabby, I found it easy to empathize with her and immediately felt a little sorry for her situation. I wanted to protect her. Her character was well rounded and nothing was left out. The Same is said for Jake. I equally liked him and wanted the two to find comfort in each other no matter what kept them apart. I am an eternal optimist and really liked the chemistry between these two. (Even when Jake was being a bit of a jerk, I wanted to slap him and tell him to smarten up cause she is a great girl...lol)
The writing in this book is done exceptionally well and I found it easy to follow. There were a few instances where I had to reread a passage because of everything that was going on, but it didn’t hinder the story line. With all the twists and turns in the story it was explained well leaving nothing out. I was actually surprised with how much detail and thought went into the story as it was very complex. I love the idea of free will, even for Angels and Demons which one normally associates with good or evil. I also loved the suspense of the story as we don’t know what exactly Gabby is (although the cover suggests she is an angel of sorts) she is something different and unique.
I really enjoyed this story but there is a dark element to it that may not be for everyone’s taste.
After finishing The Second Sign, all I can say is "Wow!" Author Elizabeth Arroyo has created a page-turning paranormal. Refreshingly different, evil is evil, good is good and there is a place in between. That is where Gabby is. Her father, whom she's never seen, is an angel, as is her twin brother, Max. The story begins with Gabby getting into trouble at school, again, and subsequently told not to come back in the fall. Max tells her at home that they will be spending the summer at their vacation house, owned by their guardian, Adler. Gabby hates the house, yet knows she has no choice. Once there, she encounters another teen, neighbor Jake, and the reader suspects this is going to be a typical paranormal love story of a supernatural creature and human. Not so. The author has other plans.
The chilling opening chapter was well written and a precursor to a dark and atmospheric tale. The Intruder is a disturbing and intriguing creature and I couldn't wait to find out more about the reason he was around. I won't divulge the mystery here because the story is too good to reveal. I really liked Gabby and her interactions with Jake. She's tough and keeps to herself so it was nice to see her open up a bit and let Jake in. As a paranormal diehard fan, The Second Sign is worth reading and Elizabeth Arroyo is an author to watch. Even though I don't see a number after the title indicating the first book of a series, there has to be a continuation (please!).
Murder. Forbidden love. Demons. Angels. War. Like I said, "Wow!" Entertaining, mystifying, and intriguing, I thoroughly enjoyed The Second Sign. (http://www.readergirlsblog.com/2013/0...)
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. Gabby is kicked out of school yet again. Her twin brother Max and guardian Adler has “exiled” her to the dreaded lake house yet again. Apparently Max and Gabby are special. Max turns out to be angelic, literally, while Gabby can see angels, demons, and feel impressions people leave behind. What is she? You’ll have to read and find out. Now, every birthday something bad happens so the twins celebrate together to keep Gabby safe. Gabby’s first night at the lake, to her dismay, she meets a boy. Immediate heart throbbing attraction ensues as she fights what she’s feeling…something polar opposite to her usual hatred.
There’s so much to love about this book! It had nonstop action, and was a constant page turner. Not to mention the supernatural aspect. We have angels, demons, fallen angels, witches, golems, it was awesome! I was a little disturbed by the theme Gabby’s friends seemed to have throughout the book. My favorite character hands down is Gabby, she’s a very dark person, scary, yet also scared. Jake just wants to love her but she just loves to hate. Unfortunately, I was left hanging as if I’d done one of Jake’s crazy stunts, so I hoping for a book 2, because I’m dying to know what will happen next! If you like dark Good vs. Evil paranormal or supernatural novels, this is a great one for you!
This one was hard for me. I don't read a lot of fallen angel stories. For some reason they all feel the same to me, even when they are completely different. (Yeah, it doesn't make sense to me either.) I guess technically this one isn't a fallen angel book to begin with, but let's jump in anyway.
What I Liked: Gabby. She's real, quirky, emotional, and every bit a teenage girl who gets her wires crossed leading to trouble.
Jake is the perfect hero for her. He's all guy and some of his actions make it easy for her to misunderstand his intentions.
Arroyo has some good twists and turns in the mystery part of the story. You're never quite sure who the good guys are or the bad.
She knows how to write terror!
What bothered me: There were a few typos, but that wasn't too bad. However, there were some spots where I just had no clue what just happened. I don't know if it was an editing mistake, or if it's just because I don't read a lot in this genre and am clueless.
I felt like the book contained two styles of writing. For the most part it read like a YA book, but the murder scenes were gruesome and dark. And detailed. More like some of the hard core murder/detective novels I've read. It jarred me a bit each time.
In the end I enjoyed the story and was torn about where Gabby finds herself. She's changed, and yet she's still not sure what she is. And Jake is...oops...sorry, you won't get any spoilers out of me. :)
When I first started reading this book, it actually took me by surprise how dark it was. I couldn't put it down but part of me was a little scared of what I might read next. What was interesting to me is I had just finished a book where the two main characters were Jake and Gabrielle. The girl was called Brielle in the last book and in this one she was called Gabby. It was hard at first to picture them as different characters, but once I got into this book, it was very simple to do, considering these characters are much different.
Gabby is a very dark, scared character I felt for her right away. She wanted to be liked and loved, but she had so much anger and she just was to scared to really let anyone in. Jake was a guy who was reckless and a dare devil, complete opposite of Gabby. Their almost instead connection was a fast one, but it worked on so many levels. It wasn't a cheesy teenage love story, it had depth and meaning. Normally when connections happen so fast in books, it doesn't seem believable, but I think the fact that this book in paranormal, it fits really well. I love their love/hate relationship.
At the end of this book, I was a little disappointed. It did not end where I want it to, but that's not really anything I can control. There better be another book with this one, because this is not satisfying enough to be a stand alone novel. I need more!!!!
To start off with, I've been reading a few books about angels and demons in the last few weeks so this book just drew we right in. Gabby and her twin brother Max have grown up knowing about things that normal people don't, this being angels and demons.
Right from the start this book had me, the opening starting with Gabby being kicked out of school and then going to spend the break at a summer house, from there things changed and Gabby met Jake. It's the same time that their birthday is and strange things always happen on their birthday, of course this year wouldn't be any different.
With some surprising twists within the story the ending seems to be pretty straight forward and it looks to be going in that direction. I was ready for the end and thought I had it all figured out, surprisingly there was a new twist that I hadn't seen coming at all which then ended the book in a surprising way.
This book is really enjoyable, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a goos read. Once I started reading it I couldn't stop and I had to keep going until I figured out what was happening. It is not a book that should be rushed through, rather read at a pace where everything makes sense, as there is so much going on and so many things going on within the plot that all come out in the end.
This book had my attention from the word GO! Okay, so that word technically wasn’t anywhere on the first page, however, it had my attention from the very first page. Ms. Arroyo has a very clean, clear and crisp writing style that brings all the right story elements shooting off the page. The plot was instantly recognizable and instantly hooked me.
I loved Gabby. She was easy to relate to. She had just enough of the angsty teenager mixed with the right amount of non-whininess. I thought she was well written and thought out. When she met Jake, the romance was introduced. It was so sweet to see these two get together. Gabby has her share of reasons not to let people in, but it was good to see her finally allowing Jake in. It was a fun, fun story.
It was fabulously dark! I ate that part up like no body’s business. A little bit of good creepy horror with some sweet romance? *singing* Peeerfect! We really got to see the dark side of religion as a whole, and it was good. It wasn’t demeaning to anyone, which is what made it so wonderful. It just…was, which was perfect.
Boy! What a cliff hanger at the end. I did not see that one coming at all! I can’t wait for the next book! This is definitely a good book! Go read it.
The Second Sign is a dark and mysterious paranormal book. I loved loved the dark and bloody details, it makes the story creepier and effective..I'm kind of used to reading the dark parts in other horror/mystery books but not actually feeling it..in The Second Sign, I can't help but imagine them vividly.
I was edgy while reading this, I think I'm as paranoid as Gabby..I'm kind of suspicious to almost every characters in the story even to Max, Gabby's brother..and at times I'm even scared to continue reading because a lot of creepy and strange things keeps on happening or appearing.
This book is about Angels and Demons...and other creepy creatures lol,..it's intriguing and confusing at times...I have lots of whats and whys.. that I think and hopefully will be answered in the next book. I was devastated with what happens towards the end, the decision Gabby made is hard but she was given no choice and it broke my heart, but with what happen comes a "gift" and I'm excited on how that gift will play part on the next book.
I enjoyed reading The Second Sign and I'm excited for the second book, hopefully..it will be darker than the first.

Second Sign is a fantastic read! The romantic tension between the main characters, Gabby and Jake, ranges from sweet to intense. The plot was packed with twist and turns that kept me engaged throughout the story. I wasn’t quiet sure what was going on in the opening scenes, but I’m so glad I kept reading because those first pages turning into an ‘aha’ moment by the end of the book. Can’t wait to see what’s in store for Jake and Gabby in Second Shadow!
I’d recommend this book to fans of paranormal. Also, be sure to check out the sequel, Second Shadow!
I really enjoyed reading The Second Sign @ first I was not sure if I wanted to read it because I am not into paranormal stories but as I began to read this book I was hooked. I couldn't put the book down !! Just wanting to know what happens next was a thrill in itself. Gabby is such a lonely girl trying to find herself and where she belongs. Her father and her twin brother are angels. Confused by things she feels she has no control over. Decisions, choices, love, confusion. What is Gabby going to do next? Where is she headed? I want to know, I want to know!! Such an awesome book. Great job Elizabeth Arroyo. I am so looking forward to the next one.
There is so much of the unexpected within the characters of this book. Are they good? Are they bad? What are they period? Each main character and even some of the supporting characters have layers, and I was lured into their lives completely. You are given so much information within the pages, but there's no feeling of data overload. You are given what you need to know as you need to know it, and most importantly I still wanted to know more. The pacing was flawless, and kept me thoroughly engaged.
