If You Can Talk, You Can Write

Rate this book
When we talk, we tell stories and present ideas--rarely with much anxiety. But think about writing something and panic sets in. Overcome this crippling response by learning how to "talk" on paper. Joel Saltzman tells it like it is--with compassion, humor, and the "uncommon wisdom" of famous writers, artists, and musicians. Based on his popular workshop for the UCLA Writers' Program, this is a program with proven results.

I read this years ago, but I needed some inspiration to get me writing again, and this book always helps. I'm surprised I haven't already reviewed it.

Saltzman's writing is an excellent example of what he is preaching. His style is easy to read, entertaining, and fun. A good book to turn to when you have writer's block!

Really this book is not just for aspiring writers but for any artist, and everyone is an artist. Sure it focuses on writing but even the writing exercises can be used for any type of art. The exercise where you start with one piece of dialogue, something someone said or that you said and loved, and write. A painter can do the same, but paint. What I'm saying is this book is universal.

I loved everything he had to say, was underlying and circling all the time but more importantly this is the first book to push me to write. I was 20 pages into the book and decided that 1) I'm buying the book today and I went until I found a used copy and 2) I'm doing NaNoWriMo this year. I put it off for all the reasons he listed but I'm ready to write with abandon. I'm ready to see where it takes me. Thank you Joel Saltzman.

I tried my darnest to read this book. I was bored with the information and skipped quickly. I couldn't find anything in it that was new to me and I was seriously looking. The publication date was back there. I'm sure it was a great book during its time. I wish I could have find something, any type of tidbits that were new to me. I really can't say the book was bad. It was well written, provided some great basics, just for newbies.

For the past several years, I have been often complimented on my writing style. When asked for secrets, I usually say "Write like you talk." Now I am going to say "Read 'If you can talk, you can write.'" I'm going to make it required reading for anyone I edit for.

I bought this back this book back in the 90s and from a book club, which means my judgement of it was based on appearance and the synopsis. I hadn’t read it until now and only and only because I’m editing my books that don’t serve me at this stage of my life. I’m so glad I didn’t discard it. THIS BOOK IS A TREASURE! It belongs right next to the books I find necessary in improving my writing. It’s encouraging, full of prompts, unique in so many ways. Each chapter, a stage of writing, is easy to read & entertaining. I’ll certainly be recommending this book to those who wish to write, and those struggling. ~ CJ Feb. 4/25

This book is a very fun read. There are fifty short chapters, and each one flies by faster than the last. Joel, the author, has an extremely laid-back approach to writing. If you're looking for a treatise on how to write correctly... You should probably look somewhere else.

Great book, would definitely recommend to anyone who wants a kick in the pants for their writing habit.

Inspirational

Love the style and realness. Amazing quotes and snippets from other creatives. Fantastic inspirational content for all aspiring and struggling writers. Only gripe is so many typos? Not sure how that happened, kind of alluring, but probably unnecessary. Still loved the book.

One of the most genuinely helpful books on writing that I have read. This unassuming book is really short and most of its 50 chapters are 1-2 pages. There is a lot of solid, actionable advice and lots of quotes and examples as well. This is the opposite of most how-to books that I despise for being overly lofty and abstracted from reality.

Simple, yet pertinent advice, which has changed my perspective slightly and actually got me writing again. Would recommend to anyone suffering from what they believe is writer's block (which I now see as 'perfectionist's block').

Simple but very effective advice. Originally, I read this book several years ago because I was getting stuck in my writing. The advice worked well.

Really, it’s a 3 and-a-half star book.

It has some gold nuggets in it but it requires major sifting. 😉

Not really my cup of tea regarding the writing style, but there are enough nuggets inside that it's definitely earned its four stars!

Not for me

I picked up If You Can Talk You Can Write as a resource for my College Writing Class after reading rave reviews. Saltszman contends that anyone who can put two sentences together in conversation can do the same in writing and encourages his readers to get over any writer’s block they may be experiencing. “Unleashing the writer within you” is the book’s basic theme and since I have very little trouble scribbling out my thoughts, I didn’t find it particularly inspiring.

Usually I write off lightweight books such as this one, but, frankly, it was on target for a college freshman audience. Slightly quirky and profane, (and, at times, aggravatingly simple) these short chapters were just right for getting class discussions started. Saltzman’s mantra to shoot for “progress rather than perfection” was something I repeated often to my would-be writers.

If you’re looking for brilliance, try C.S. Lewis, but if you want pithy, uncomplicated instructions on how to start writing, this book may be for you.

Joel SaltzmanI loved this book. I delayed doing any serious writing for a lot of years because I thought I couldn't do it. I figured to do it 'right' I had to have a wall of framed degrees from the greatest universities. Not so. Joel Saltzman helped me to let go of those stigmas. I'm now in the midst of 3 book projects, with more ideas planned. Plus 2 blogs, and another blog planned. Thanks!

There was almost nothing new about writing in this book, but it spoke directly to me. I tend to suffer from the "Perfectionism==>Paralysis==>Procrastination" cycle when it comes to writing. This book was a good kick in the pants. The many (& I do mean many) quotes from famous authors doesn't hurt either. They confirm & reconfirm that gritting your teeth, accepting it won't be perfect the first time & reworking until it's damn near perfect is the only way to write

I cannot say how much I love this book. This one book has done more for me as a writer than anything else aside from feedback from author friends. I lost the copy my mother gave me - which was due to the fact I was a chatterbox - but I eventually replaced it simply because it motivates more than much else I've ever read. Oh! How I love this book. It releases me from my inner editor like only booze used to be able to do. And it brings a gleeful humor to the writing process. I put it next to Break Block Now! by Jerrald Mundis and Writing Down the Bones by Natalie Goldman, for a little trio of books that in a minimum of time will get my out of my head and down to work.
