ok, disclaimers must be made. Read my review of the first book for details, but the most important issue is that I have met the author, and she gave me the second book for free since she liked my review of the first book, and she knows I'm poor, and took pity on me. So I got to save ninety nine cents.
I think probably the most significant issue with this book is that if you didn't like the first one, you probably won't like the second one, but if you DID like the first book, you will like this one even MORE. I even think the quality of the writing is a little smoother and more polished than her debut novel, which I guess it what one would hope for. But it gets five stars for staying true, and being exactly what you would hope it would be, and then some. NOTE: this is not Shakespeare, and I KNOW THAT, I am judging it against other fluffy books about vampires, romance and suspense. It is not aiming to be classic literature that will be studied by college students 500 years later. This is pure entertainment, and I'm glad that it is.
I was a little afraid to read this book, the second offering in the trilogy, because I came into it with expectations, thanks to the first book. I had originally not expected to like the first book at all, because it wasn't my usual genre, it didn't even SOUND interesting to me before I read it. And I was so pleasantly surprised to find out that I liked it. But as often happens, after a strong beginning, one can enjoy but is also let down by subsequent follow ups to a well-built beginning.
HOWEVER, I have to say that I like this one much more. This is especially startling to me as I did not anticipate liking the male lead at all, I thought in fact that he was a bit of an arrogant ass in the last book, someone I was SUPPOSED to dislike. And I was sort of disappointed that the second book hadn't been about Tristan, the werewolf, because I would have been ALL OVER that book with a fervored passion. (Yes, spell check, I see that you don't like "fervored." Bite me. Har har.) Which in itself is surprising, because generally I prefer vampires to werewolves (unless it's Twilight, ugh, pastyface), if that isn't the silliest phrase ever written in the history of book reviews, BUT, Tristan was just so awesome.
So. This book initially had three strikes against it for me: A) again, not my usual thing, B) probability of being as good as the first: LOW and C) NOT about my beloved Tristan, instead about that pompous ass, Luca. And some simpering stupid girl who was dumb enough to get caught by an evil witch and infected for LIFE.
Well, happy to be wrong on all three counts! Luca is DIVINE, and oh so HOT. And there is sort of this little (SPOILER ALERT!) odd semi three way at the beginning of the story that is positively sizzling. Plus it brings sexy back with the two main characters from the first story, which is very comforting. Then, even though the chick from the first book is the kind that could kick your face in with military precision, I actually found a softer depth of strength in this new character that was very appealing, that is, if I'm allowed to use a phrase like "depth of strength" in a romance book about vampires, werewolves and witches.
And of course I love that it's set in New Orleans, among other places, with a plot that's relatively entertaining, a little more about interesting relationships, like how one of the more senior witches in the coven is jealous about the new feted upstart, who doesn't even WANT to be a witch, and it's sort of like I'm suddenly back in the middle of high school intrigues or the playing of corporate politics. There is still plenty of action, to be sure, but it's a little more about interpersonal dynamics than police investigations, which is a personal preference. I also love the colorful, detailed descriptions of the various settings.
For those who have already read the first book, well, if you thought THAT was hot, I would not read this book outside of bed without a significant other or a piece of battery operated equipment nearby. Probably NOT quite as bedroom sports intensive as 50 Shades of Gray, which I have not read, but very WOWSA and minus the boring parts (again, I haven't read 50 Shades, but even the excerpts in reviews have put me to sleep, not to be critical, I'm sure it doesn't keep the author awake nights while she's counting her piles of money to know that I have no interest in reading it). Generally, this was a very fun and spicy (but romantic) read for me, and I can not WAIT to read the next one. Hopefully, I won't have to. Bring me some Tristan. Soon please.
