Double Shot by Cindy Blackburn is the second book of the cozy Cue Ball Mysteries series. Each book of this series will feature it’s on mystery to be solved so they can be read as a standalone if choosing to do so.

The first book of the series introduced Jessie Hewitt who has a bit of a double dose of quirkiness to her as a cozy character. Jessie grew up learning to shoot pool and can take the best of them when challenged to a game but she also makes her living as a romance novelist under a pen name.

In this second book of the series Jessie and the detective investigating the case in the first mystery have begun a romance together. Wilson Rye has been called in to investigate a new murder which he shares with Jessie needing her help going undercover as a pool shark since no one in the police department shares her talent of the game.

Again, with this series I felt about the same as I had with the first book, it’s cute enough to be entertaining but doesn’t always feel realistic. Jessie’s actions don’t always match what her age is supposed to be and other moments in the stories don’t seem to flow as well as they could. I won’t touch the police pulling her into the investigation as it’s fiction and I suppose anything is possible but in the end it’s still good for a few laughs and a few hours entertainment.

I'm loving this series!

Jessie is simply adorable, and her friends are just as fun! Plus, I love Jessie's ridiculous romance novels that are intertwined with the murder mysteries. These characters are so much fun!

who knew pool was interesting

My favorite line from book was eakes spoken by Tessie/jessie. I hated the fact she referring her beau as ex. She was acting very jealous for older woman. If you suspect your beau is cheating on you. Dump him.

GUEST REVIEW FOR EARGASMS - BY KIMBERLY HOLGATE

Jessica (Jessie) Hewitt AKA Adele Nightingale's new beau, because shes to old to say boyfriend, Captain Wilson Rye needs her help apparently besides himself there's not a good pool player on the force and hes in desperate need of a shark to help solve two murders so naturally he asks his girlfriend to go undercover for him. Jessie in turn enlists the help of her best friends Karen Sembler and Candy Poppe.

The Wade on Inn is the last known whereabouts of both the victims.and after a quick makeover for Jessie, who apparently is to recognizable from all her publicity over the last murder, unfortunately to much time in the dye leaves her looking like a Munster no worries a push up bra from Candy Poppe and no one will be looking at her face not even her beau.

Most of the story takes place at the Wade on Inn with its cast of unique characters. there's a bible toting bouncer, two blue hared old lady's and Avis Sage one of Jessie's fathers old colleges to name a few. Jessie who is now using her moms name as her cover plays pool most of the time she should of just staid home though because Candy and Karen are the real investigators in this one.

We are introduced to Jessie's mother in this book. Unfortunately Adele Nightingale is still telling her story's threw out the main story and Jessie is still bemoaning about her age and now how Wilson is 5 years younger than her. And now we have to listen to her incessant jealousy over Tiffany Sass a young police officer that is working closely with Wilson.

The murderer is more obvious in this book and you can most likely guess. The book is all from Jesse's point of view. Overall not as good as the first book but still a humorously good read with behind the scenes action between Jessie and Wilson.

The book is again Narrated by Caroline Miller which I thought was a good choice. She makes it easy to differentiate characters and i liked that she didn't try to use a males voice just her own in a different tone. She doesn't read excessively fast so its easy to listen to in 3X speed and still understand.

Disclosure - I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Captain Wilson Rye has approached his girlfriend, Jessie Hewitt, to assist him in solving two murders. His team isn't able to put all the pieces together, and he needs someone with some sharp pool hall skills to come to his aid. That's where Jessie comes in. She's the daughter of the late Leon Cue-It Hewitt, a well known hustler in pool halls. Jessie has learned a thing or two from dear old dad. Jessie enlists the help of her two good friends that live in her building, and the trio get to work. Hustling the table and talking to all of the regulars. One of the regulars is another hustler, and good friend of her dad's. One of the murder victims was another long time hustler. Jessie enlists the help of her mother, to gather information from two old biddies keen on spending every bit of their kid's inheritance by betting on all the games. The list of suspects is narrowed down to just three, and one suspect goes missing for a day. The next day he is back at the pool hall saying how he was spooked by all of the suspicion and the fact that the captain had made a trip to visit his mother. That same evening, all of the pieces come together, and Jessie and friends are able to solve the murders.

It's a fun read, with antics that will have you laughing out loud.

A lot less enamoured of this outing than the first book in the Cue Ball series. In my review of the first book in this series I mentioned that Jessie's narratorial voice was so entertaining that I didn't really care what the mystery was. This time the novelty of Jessie's voice had worn off, and I found that I really didn't care for the mystery...didn't care about the murder victims who died before the book begins, didn't follow who was who in the massive list of suspects, etc., etc.

Some random thoughts: 1) The interspersed bits from Jessie's romance novel-in-progress were actually quite entertaining despite being tropey as all get out. 2) The romance bit with Rye was all right, jealousy isn't that interesting to me. 3) It was VERY grating that so many different people say repeatedly to Jessie "You're a little scary, you know that?" I just did a search on the Kindle copy and it's said to her SEVEN times. Like, no more than twice in a book, please!

So yeah...3*, we'll see about the third. There's a change of location to Hawaii so I might read to see what she does with a new cast of characters.

Second in the Cue Ball series, we finally see Jessie in action as a pool shark, but only for a good cause. Her police detective "beau" asks her to go underground at a bar/pool hall to look for information on two murders that happened there. She in turn enlists her friends from her building in helping change her appearance and provide support in the bar. Like the others in this series, there are lots of clues and false leads before the final solution, and the characters are lots of fun. I'm digging this series!

Fun

I enjoyed this whimsical mystery about an author/pool shark and her boyfriend, police chief Wilson Rye. Jessica manages to get involved with an undercover scheme to solve two murders.

It's a quick read and entertaining. This is the second book in a series, but can easily be read as a stand alone.

Pool shark and a double murder.

When two pool players are murdered years, separately, a civilian pool shark agrees to work for the police. Not the best thriller book, but enjoyable.

After reading 14 chapters, I quit. Had some humor but lacked a good story. Chapter beginning with a book she was writing seem stupid to me so I finally decided not to waste my time reading more DNF.

This is the second book in the series, and I found it just as fun as the first one. I appreciate a main character that's my age who's feisty, interesting, smart, and fun. This is a cozy mystery read that has lots of laughs and female camaraderie.

quirky cast of characters

I really enjoyed this mystery and the fast of characters. Jessie and her neighbors are amateur sleuths who are put to the test in a funny and light mystery.

Funny

Poor Wilson, Jessie really is scary, and this whole story was a joy to read. The shenanigans of Candy, Karen, and Jessie's mom really liven up the entire murder mgstery.

Double Shot

Written by Cindy Blackburn

Reviewed by Author Roy Murry

Double Shot hits all the pockets. Nine Ball is the game. Murder is the reason for the games that are played at Wade On Inn, where homicides were presumed to have taken place.

Jessie, the main character, is asked to do something out of pocket by her Captain of Detectives boyfriend. Her profession is writing romance novels, and her pool game gets her into the fray of a whodunit.

Accompanied by her girlfriends, Jessie navigates through a saloon population that is hiding the murderer in its mists. They all put in their time evaluating the suspects to an unexpected conclusion.

In the background, Jessie's beau is somewhat in control of the situation. But it is Jessie and her friends who do the investigating work on site.

The writing is upbeat, sometimes funny, and right on the Nine Ball. There is no clutter in Ms. Blackburn’s prose. She gets to the point, even using two animals, a cat, and a dog to upstage the humans humorously.

I recommend all of her mysteries. I have read and reviewed three. All of her novels are snappy in cadence and keep you involved. I’ll be back to enjoyed another.

Opening this book I really didn’t know what to expect. The first chapter took me by surprise and I had to take a couple of minutes before plunging on. The literary nonsense took me aback and I reasoned that from this starting point, it can only go up. In retrospect if my prediction hadn’t proved right, I would have dropped this baby like a hot potato. Thankfully it did take a slow upward turn and the original gibberish took on form, although the dialog they used was as flat as the beer they drank.
Jessica (Jessie) Hewitt, aka Tessie Hess was, at fifty-two an established author. Her specialty was cheesy historical romances. Her boyfriend (if you can call the partner of a well established semi-centenarian that) Wilson Rye is the captain of the Clarence Police Department (North Carolina). A double homicide brought him to Jessie for help in solving the crime. This is a frangible premise for a believable murder mystery; but, truth be told, this isn’t your average anonymity. This proves to be a murder investigation by committee making it unique; if nothing else. A cornucopia of colorful characters was sometimes a little confusing as to who was who. With Jessie’s head and thoughts in the clouds half of the time and in the gutter the other in the gutter, she is both colorful and entertaining. The story does have a couple of redeeming factors. It doesn’t put your butt on the edge of your seat but encourages you to snuggle down in said chair and leisurely turn the pages. Adding adorable animals into the mix add a new dimension to an otherwise humdrum narrative. I guess it’s like a bagatelle playing the blues.

Another home run for Cindy Blackburn!
I read / listened to this book in audio format via audible.com. I grab audiobooks whenever I get the chance as the narrator only makes the book better. With proper pronunciations, accents and excitement in all the right places, and audiobook is like listening to a movie!
This is book 2 in the Cue Series. I loved it! I am glad to see Jessica Hewitt with Wilson Rye still. Together Wilson, Jessica & Candy Pop set out to solve yet another murder mystery. Loads of comedy in this book, along with tongue twisters. With characters like Candy Pop, Geez Louise & Tiffany La-Dee-Doo-Da Sass this story has many laughs. The beginning of the book had me laughing with Candy pop's new puppy Puddles piddled on the floor. This time the setting to the story takes place in the pool hall. Ironically Jessica Hewitt's dad was a pool shark called Cue it Hewitt!
Never a dull moment in this book. I loved the story & the plot. I love the author's sense of humor added in this quirky humorous mystery. I love how Jessica is a secret romance novelist called Addaleigh (Add a leigh) lol. Kuddos to Cindy Blackburn for hitting another home run & to the narrator Caroline Miller for only adding more humor to this already funny mystery as the narrator. You both did a bang up job! 5 stars all the way!!!

Captain Wilson Rye is investigating two recent deaths and needs a pool hustler to go undercover to get more information about him in a local bar, The Wade on Inn, since it was the last spot both the victims were seen. His problem is there isn't anyone on the force who can play well enough to pull it off so he asks his girlfriend, Jessie, if she will do it. Jessie is now a romance writer but used to be a very, very good pool player making her perfect for Rye's operation. He really hated to ask her but had no other options. Jessie agrees to do this for him but undergoes a complete makeover so if she sees someone from her past they won't recognize her.

This story started out pretty funny but as it went on the humor just didn't work. One thing I found ridiculous was Jessie talking to her cat as though she expected it to take her side on whatever the issue was. It was a good mystery, though. Everybody had their own idea of who the murderer was and why they thought so. I couldn't connect with Jessie but loved the secondary characters of her mom and friends, Karen and Candy.

Throughout this story, we would suddenly get parts of the novel Jessie was writing. This was confusing. I kept trying to figure out how it fit into the story and who the characters were. I couldn't place them. I never did figure out why Jessie's novel kept showing up.

This is a cozy mystery and a comic cozy at that.

There are funny characters who do things which are not always the brightest things to do. Jessie, the plucky heroine is asked to do a little background work to help her boyfriend. Wilson is a policeman and he just wants her to go to a sleazy bar and look around and find out who might have killed two people recently.

Jessie goes in disguise and takes some friends with her. Eventually even her mother is part of the investigation.

All in all, this is in no way a believable story, but that does not mean it is not entertaining.

There is a sense of true caring among friends and family. The secondary characters are funny and quirky and basically very entertaining.

The plot is based on Jessie being an expert at shooting pool. I know nothing about pool, but feel like I learned a little bit in this book.

All in all, you will laugh at this book, you will like Jessie and her crazy friends and you will feel entertained as you read this book.

Enjoy.

A humorous and romantic cozy of the Cue Ball Mysteries. Jessie Hewitt is asked to go undercover by her police officer boyfriend, Captain Wilson Rye, to investigate a murder at a pool hall / bar / dance hall with live music. A friend of her father’s who played pool there may have been murdered previously. She was a pool hustler in her youth, now in her fifties. The site of two murders is the bar / pool hall / dance hall. She asks her two girlfriends, Candy and Karen, to join her at the Wade On Inn. They come up with several suspects from the cast of characters. She even asks her mother to get friendly with two retirement-home women who love whooping it up.
The Captain is aghast, even though the group comes up with information the police do not have, nor would ever have. Lots about pool-playing moves. A fun read. Kindle 2012

Easy, fast-paced cozy mystery with a lot of humor. Despite the cat that is almost a character herself, the book didn't fall into the traps of many cozy mysteries and get too "precious". The heroine was refreshingly smart, brave, and not superficial. Jess is 52, and is able to stand up for herself without obsessing about the man in her life. I enjoyed the unusual angle of Jess being a pool shark, and the Wade Inn was a great location for the investigation. The trio of friends were very funny, as was Jess's mother. The murder mystery never got too scary. A fun summer read. Recommended for fans of Janet Evanovich's writing.

Romance writer Jessie is once more using her skill as a pool player, this time to hustle suspects in a murder investigation at the behest of her new squeeze, Captain Wilson Rye. Her crazy friends, her ditzy mom, Snowflake the cat, and Puddles the Poodle further enliven the plot. Plenty of humor, snappy realistic dialog and a full cast of appealing characters make this series a fun listen, and even better than the first. My only criticism is that there is a lot to keep up with, particularly with excerpts of Jessie's novel competing with the main tale. Narrator Caroline Miller keeps things moving along with excellent timing, and enhances the humor with a smile in her voice.
