2024 Update
the setup…
It begins with a baseball game. The DC Federals are playing the final game of the season, one out away from advancing to the World Series. Then Willie Vasquez, the star center fielder, inexplicably drops an easy fly ball. Game and season over. Sam, Nick, Scotty and lots of their friends are there (thankfully) because the city goes crazy and not in a good way. Before the morning, Willie is found dead with a whole town full of suspects.

the heart of the story…
The murder case is center stage but there’s a lot of other things going on in the lives of Sam, her family and her team members. It’s one of the things I’m enjoying about this series, especially how seamlessly it’s woven together into one compelling story. Willie’s murder case took a turn down a dark path, too, one I didn’t see coming.

the narration…
Still loving Kaminsky’s performance! Good story made even better with her skilled delivery.

the bottom line…
Nick’s re-election, Scotty’s immersion into the family, Gonzo’s custody issues and Sam’s sister Tracy’s escalating problems with her daughter were just a few of the personal elements surrounding the central case. I enjoyed most everything except the strange tangent in Sam & Nick’s sexy times, which just feels off. Otherwise, this was a really good listening experience, including the storyline involving Lieutenant Stahl. Yeah, that’s my teaser.

2015 Review
Sam, Nick and most of their friends and family are attending the DC Federals final baseball game of the season. The team is one out away from moving on to the World Series when their all star center fielder drops an easy fly ball. The city is in uproar and by morning, that player is dead after a night of riots all over the town. Sam and team set out to figure out not only who killed him but where and how.

The nuts and bolts investigation hooked me from start to finish as it took quite a few twists and turns getting to the conclusion. The mix of the personal aspects of Sam and Nick's life, as well as those around them, continues to fascinate me and the addition of Scotty to the family is just a delight. Nick's election, Gonzo's custody battle, Tracy's struggles with her defiant teenager and Avery Hill's ongoing attraction to Sam are just a few of the secondary storylines going on while the search for the killer progresses.

I'm hopelessly hooked to this series! Sam and Nick's unique relationship, combined with an interesting murder case and a very likable secondary cast has just captured my heart and mind. I don't want it to end.

4.5 SOLID STARS...

OK, Marie has done it again. Another winner in the Fatal series. Just checked there to see when I first started my love affair with Sam and Nick. April 2011. Every book has been a winner for me. They just keep getting better and better. I love Nick, what's not to love - is he too perfect? Maybe a little bit TOO perfect but still he does it for me every time and I usually LOVE a real badass, alpha, male but Nick is so perfect for Sam. Sam, what's not to love. Lieutenant with the Metro PD. She is tough, goodlooking, loves her jeans and boots - she is not a big fan of "dressing up" - LOVE it. I love my jeans also.

"I don't know why they call these freaking things smart phones. I never feel more stupid than when I try to use one of them."

Know the feeling, Sam, my teenagers have given up on me using my SMARTPHONE to its full potential.

"I love you too much."
"Not possible."
"It's not in my nature to be gushy, so maybe I don't say it often enough or show you -"
He stopped her with a soft, devastatingly sensual kiss.
"Baby, you show me every day, in every look and every touch. I never wonder how much you love me. I always know."

"I belong to you too, body and soul and heart and everything else I've got. If you'd asked me two years ago if I would ever say something like that to anyone, I probably would've sneered before I punched you. But you've laid me low and stripped me bare."

DOUBLE SIGH!!

"Were you aware …….?"

"I have no comment now or ever on my husband, his personal business or his career."

"But did you know ….?"

"I have no comment now or ever on my husband, his personal business or his career."

"Did you know that he was …?"

"I have no comment now or ever on my husband, his personal business or his career. Anyone left who doesn't get that?"

Sam, you tell 'em, you kick-ass tough cookie. Love her!

And Scotty, what a great addition to the family. Keep wondering if Sam will every have a baby of her own… will just have to wait and see, I guess.

Freddie still makes me smile - he is Ying to Sam's Yang - they are great working partners.

Avery Hill - not sure what to make of him. He still seems to have the hots for Sam but she is not in the least bit interested. Well, would you be if you had a hot Senator waiting for you in the Loft at home? No Siree!

The storyline was good, sports, dead athletes, under-age prostitution, elections, Air Force One, troops in Afghanistan …

All I know is that when I pick up a Marie Force book I will not be disappointed. We have to wait nearly a year for the next one. Ah, well, what can you do.

Ended up in Washington DC by accident many moons ago when our flight from Pittsburgh had to stop in DC and stay overnight. As the flight back to Belgium was not until the following evening we had a full day to discover the Capitol. It was fantastic, especially being able to visit the grave of JFK - great Irishman that he was!!

.... and Marie, THANKS for not heading down the "50" route! Appreciate it.

My love for this series isn’t showing any sign of fading. Granted not my favourite, but after witnessing certain events begin to unfold, my radar is detecting a wealth of possibility on the horizon for Sam, Nick and their nearest and dearest.

*****5 Game Winning Stars*****

The writing powerhouse known as Marie Force strikes with full force (no pun intended) in the sixth installment to her popular "Fatal Series." This time around we find ourselves enjoying a night out at the ballpark with Sam, Nick and the gang. Excitement fills the air as the chances are looking good for a win by the home team to secure a trip to the World Series. But in the blink of an eye comes a mistake no one can believe, and things suddenly take a turn towards the dumpster.

Join Sam, along with the rest of her team, as they take to the field in an effort to solve a crime of murder and mayhem that shocks the nation's capital and keeps readers glued to their chairs. In addition, there's always an assortment of other interesting activities taking place among the “Fatal” cast of characters. Romance is always in bloom, political intrigue is a must in D.C., and family problems stand awaiting resolve. Count on plenty of the aforementioned from the gang PLUS lots of fun and witty dialogue that we’ve come to expect from this author.

One might think that a series focusing on one main couple would become stale and lose its freshness and quality. This is not the case here. Marie Force could well be the Energizer Bunny's kissing-cousin in the way she keeps the momentum going and going and going. Just as in the previous five books, the latest installment is filled to the brim with an all-new storyline while connecting past, present and future.

Much too quickly you’ll find yourself at the end of another fantastic read and, as always, you’ll be begging for more.

From the wise voice of Yoda, comes a friendly bit of advice, "Feel the Force." And from an avid reader and “Fatal” addict, “You won’t regret it!”

It looked like an easy win for the Washington Federals baseball team. But an error by Centerfielder Willie Vasquez ends their hopes for a world series win. The fans start to riot and Lt. Sam Holland has her hands full trying to restore the peace. When the dust settles, Willie Vasquez's body is found in the trash. Now Sam and her team must sort through the many suspects to discover who killed Willie.

This is another solid mystery in Marie Force's Fatal series. There are a number of suspects to choose from. I took a guess and happened to get the villain right. Along with Sam trying to find the bad guy, we have her husband, Nick, campaigning for re-election. My rating: 4.5 Stars.

2024 Re-read: I am re-reading the series with a Goodreads group. I really enjoyed the mystery. There were lots and lots of suspects in this one. I didn't remember much of the story at all. I thought it had a great plot. My rating is still 4.5 Stars.

There is a lot to like about this book. Sam has a high-profile murder with, literally, thousands of suspects. But she listens to her gut and wins the day. The relationship between Sam, Nick and adopted son, Scotty, is growing and deepening. My only problem with that is that Scotty is just too perfect. The kid is more robot than little boy. I also wasn't happy with the situation between Sam and her die-hard enemy at the station. It just didn't ring true for me. But, overall, it was a good book and a pleasant diversion.

After the centerfielder for the D.C. Federals baseball team misses a crucial play and loses the playoff game for them, the city dissolves into chaos. When the dust settles, the player is found dead. As Sam digs deep into his life, she uncovers several people who could have taken advantage of the riot to dispatch the guy. This may not have been the random act of a disgruntled fan after all.

As election time draws near, Nick is pushing his re-election campaign into high gear. But a request from the President has him putting it on hold for a few days and when a situation Nick couldn't control explodes in the news, he could face the consequences.

Pretty good read - would have liked a bit more suspense in this one. But overall, not bad - gotta love Sam and Nick and now young Scotty. Glad that Lt. Stahl finally got what was coming - still a bit of background mystery there.

I hope that since Nick and Sam now have their little family that the "police procedural" part of the stories doesn't get lessened. I felt it a bit waning (I think that's the word), ergo why I couldn't quite give this book 5 stars. I look for madness and mayhem and this one was a bit light in that area.

Others, that thrive on the romance part will love the book, although we only saw Nick and Sam "indulging" - none of the other characters were dealt with.

Although there was an extremely funny part - Nick explaining to young Scotty what a blow job was - hilarious with a typical young boys reaction! ;)

From the blurb: A critical error.
A Cinderella season cut short.
A star player murdered.

D.C. is recovering from angry riots after one player's mistake blew the D.C. Federals' chance at the World Series, and Lt. Sam Holland is determined to unravel the twisted web of motives behind the star center fielder's death. Was it a disgruntled fan, a spurned lover or a furious teammate?

Do I recommend this book to others - you betcha, go for it.

4.5-5.0 stars. Standing/clapping!!!! Thank you Marie Force, this one was outstanding! Lt. Sam Holland was at her all time snarky badass best. There’s no shortage of intrigue/murder in the city and there’s plenty of action for Sam and her loveable crew to investigate. Sexy FBI Agent Avery Hill is back which makes me giddy with glee. Love the way Nick goes all alpha when Avery’s around. I keep expecting Nick to just pee a circle around Sam. LOL! Hoping Avery gets to be a prominent character as the series unfolds. I think he and Sam could make great friends. (Sorry, Nick).

Speaking of Nick…he’s still ever so H-O-T!!! And Sam and Nick are even more in love. Yes, it’s possible and oh so satisfying. As time goes on Sam seems to be able to express/demonstrate her emotional side to a greater degree. Surprised me with all her heart felt emotions in this bk. It’s been fun watching her evolve as a wife/mother. Adopted son Scotty is absolutely adorable as always and constantly pulls my heartstrings. Even though Sam’s new at motherhood, she’s doing a fine job. One every kid would find handy at times when picked on by a school bully. The scenes with this theme were priceless.

There always seems to be the lingering question in my mind about how this career focused couple will move forward in the future when Nick is proving to be the popular politician destined for greater things. Will be interesting to watch what unfolds in future installments of this series.

This one is a must…lots of laugh out loud moments and tons of entertainment. An extremely satisfying read, and you can bet I’ll be waiting anxiously for March 24, 2014 when the tentatively titled Fatal Pursuit will be released. May this series be long lived.

First thing first, OMG ... this series needs to TONE DOWN on the excessive usage of endearments!! What was it with every single couple (and even Sam's father and step-mom) calling everyone with it: Baby (which I hate with passion), babe, honey, buddy, baby girl. I swear, it was like people were forgetting each other's names! It was one of the things I hated the most in any romance. I was forced to take drastic measures by deleting most of them (and of course change those bloody baby's).

*** VERY SPOILERY REVIEW ***

Anyway, back to the story ... I really enjoyed the case in this one. I think this was the first time (if I could recall) that the case wasn't related to political issue (or could be traced back to Nick's professional connections). It was a bit sad, actually. How fans could be so vindictive over a player's failure. I knew that it said many lives depended on it, but it was just insane. The depressing thing was, I also knew that it could happen in real life. Almost a decade ago, Andrés Escobar was shot to death after he made own goal back in World Cup 1994 (uhm, SOCCER people, not American Football). So for me the case was riveting.

I also loved Scotty so very much. It was wonderful to read how Nick and Sam being so happy and in love with their (almost legally) adopted son. The parenthood moments were some of the best scenes I totally loved from this book. From Nick answering Scotty's question about blowjobs (HILARIOUS), Sam comforting Scotty when he had nightmare by sleeping and cuddling him, to Sam being mama bear when Scotty was punched at school. It was awesome! I could read those scenes repeatedly. I was glad that the two of them had the chance to become parents to this sweet boy.

As for the other developments in this series: 1) Gonzo facing upcoming custody battle, 2) FBI Agent Avery Hill was pretty much staying in town now with his new assignment, 3) Stahl FINALLY getting arrested, and 4) Nick was offered a chance as VP for Nelson in upcoming election, but he refused.

No. 1 made me weary since I knew how Gonzo loved his son. I was NOT happy with no. 2 because Hill was just creepy for me. The way that he acknowledged that he liked Sam, even if he knew Sam was married? Yeah, NOT my favorite person. He should just be gone! But then again, maybe Shelby could convert him? No. 3, well, FINALLY. I was praying that bastard was removed from Sam's life since the beginning. And no. 4, I was satisfied with Nick's answer. Not now, he had chance in four years.

As for my complains -- other than the excessive endearment -- I felt that Sam became too mushy as the story progressed. I knew that the marriage life softens her. But I hoped it just didn't made her overly sappy. Oh, and her questioning her older sister about anal sex? Just felt off. It was like the spanking scene in book #5 that just came out of nowhere.

In conclusion, since I didn't have to experience the torture of overused endearments (as I explained above), I could still give this solid 4-stars. But with 'a special note' (as written above)

Rating: 4.5 stars:

1 star for Sam: as "badass" as ever, but I like it when she shows her softer side with Nick and Scotty
1 star for Nick: I like the decision he makes at the end of the book
1 big star for Scotty: some of the best scenes in the book are showing Nick and Sam's relationship with Scotty (the "blowjob" scene was hilarious...)
1 star for the "gang": the secondary characters are great as usual and I like it that they don't "take over" like in the Gansett Islands series. (I gave up on that series, way too many confusing storylines crammed into one book)
1 star for the murder mystery
minus 0.5 stars for the strange "50 shades" vibe: Sam's "anal" discussion with her sister is weird, IMO.

I’ll wait for the next book and I’ll keep hoping that Sam and Nick have their own child someday in the future! :D

Fatal Mistake
4 Stars

Following a night of angry riots sparked by the DC Feds' failure to ascend to the World Series, Detective Lieutenant Sam Holland investigates the death of the star player who failed to catch the crucial flyball. With a suspect pool that includes thousands of furious fans as well as numerous angry teammates and a potential stalker, Sam must wade through the evidence and solve the high-profile case before anyone else turns up dead.

For the first time, Force deviates from the usual political setting and enters the world of sports with all that it entails, including rabid fans, desperate owners, promiscuous players, and sordid scandals. It rapidly becomes clear that the killer is someone closer to home than the average outraged baseball nut, and Force does an admirable job building up the suspects and motives. The fact that my interest remained even after the revelation of is a testament to the improvements in the plotting and writing.

In terms of the ongoing storylines, there are some compelling developments on several fronts including Stahl's comeuppance, which has been a long time coming, the possibility of a relationship between Shelby and Avery (although Force will have to get past the elephant in the room, i.e., , to make it believable), and the looming custody battle in Gonzo's future.

Despite these strengths, there are also some problematic elements. To begin with, Nick's meteoric rise in political favor is illogical considering his lack of experience. Moreover, Scottie's rapid integration into Sam and Nick's world is unrealistic, and some of his mannerisms are inconsistent with his age - he's 12 not 6. Furthermore, the soft porn nature of Nick and Sam's sex life is out of place in this genre - it is romantic suspense, not erotica. Finally, Wille's missing the easy flyball is never explained.

Overall, Force has created an engaging mix of characters and her writing is improving with storylines that resonate.

I ABSOLUTELY FREAKING LOVE THIS SERIES!!! I don't know how Marie Force does it but each book just gets better and better!! I love reading how their relationship and love for one another continues to grow. They are definitely one of my favorite couples ever and Fatal Mistake has definitely got to be one of my favorite books in this series. I never wanted it to end. I hated having to leave Nick and Sam along with my other favorite characters knowing how long the wait is for the next addition to the series~it is just about killing me!! lol :) Nick <3
BEST OF THE BEST rating!!! Fatal Mistake is going right into my keeper pile with the rest of the series~just waiting to be reread.

I will say this...I am not sure what direction Marie is taking Avery and Tinkerbell but I'm not sure I like her with him. I think I might actually prefer Tinkerbell with Derek (especially since he has the baby) or even Harry.

LOVE LOVE LOVE that Gonzo, Christine, Terry, Lindsey, Jeanie and Michael got more of a story line in this book. Cannot wait to see what happens with Skip. And I absolutely LOVE the addition of Scottie. OMG...when he asked Nick about a BJ~ HILARIOUS!!! And his "work clothes" so cute!!

Sam and her family are enjoying a great baseball game hosted by their DC theme the fed who was minutes away from winning the series when their star player Willie did not move in time to catch the ball and made the team lose. Fans become so angry that a riot eventually breaks out in the DC area. The secret services moves quickly to get Nick Sam and Scotty out of the stadium. Sam quickly tells them she will not be going with them as all police in the area have been called in to deal with a riot that started because of the lost of the game. Once the aftermath of the riot is over Willie the player who causes them the game is found dead. So begins another case with Sam and her team to find out if this was a fan who killed him or was it someone he knew. As with all the fatal books there are not only Sam and Nick story but they are few secondary characters that you become invested in just like Sam and Nick and you get updates in what is going on with their lives. Also in this title Sam again deals with her arch nemesis Lieutenant Stahl and this time its more than words that are exchanged with the both of them.

I must admit this Fatal book didn't hold the same excitement that the past books did. However, that being said it was still a very book read. I think this is the first book in the series that Sam didn't end up visiting the emergency room. I did love the way she handled the attack by Stahl immensely. Hopefully he won't be a problem anymore.

The parts with Sam, Nick & Scotty as a family were very nice. I look forward to seeing how the relationship between Shelby & Hill goes.

Even though the political aspect of these books is interesting, I just don't see how Nick could possibly end up in the white house. Even in the VP position would mean the end to Sam's career as a cop. Sam wouldn't be happy if that was taken away from her. I'll be interested to see how Marie handles this in future books, though I know this will be several books down the road.

I look forward to the next one of these little gems!!

I really like this series but this book fell a flat compared to the others. I think I didn't give a flip about who killed Willie for the first half of the book. Things picked up after that and it was an overall enjoyable read. I am interested in the relationship aspects of the characters and enjoyed the developments. Lots to look forward to in the next book...

4.5 Stars.

I’ve had a late reading start to the year, so this is the first book of 2019, done and dusted... and it was a good read! I really feel like the Fatal series has gotten quite good, and I think I have finally adjusted to the fact that Marie Force includes a lot of different plot threads through each story. But it’s come to a good balance now, where the main plot is central, and all the other “threads” tie in nicely. Before it was a big pet peeve of mine but now I’ve come to enjoy this series and I do love Sam and Nick! They are so couple GOALS! I’m just so emotionally invested in all of these characters now, so I have a biased view.

I so seriously love this series, and primarily because of it this author!

That said, while I loved the story I was mildly disappointed in this installment. The story was original and fabulous as it always is, and our main heroes are incredible as usual.... what fell short for me was all the supporting characters I have grown to love. I read the first 5.5 books very quickly and came to love them all. After waiting months for this one, so little was advanced in these supporting storylines. The book felt rushed and without any oomph for these other characters. It set up several very nice possible storylines for our next two books, which we now have to wait nine months for. It just doesn't sit right with me. I feel a little cheated sadly.

So while I could never get enough of this series, I have to say I hope the next book is more worth the wait.

LOVED IT!! Was so good to catch up with our old friends again!

- I thought the storyline was perfect! It was nice to have a non-political story in Washington and the baseball theme made so much sense - especially w/ Nick/Scotty's love of baseball and the fact that Scotty did the baseball camp earlier.

- Nick's love for Sam always melts me. LOVE when he calls her "Babe."

- Sam's lines are the BEST! Love how she puts people in their place so easily. In her line of work and in her position, she HAS to be tough - and she IS! (But we also see a much softer side this time, because of her motherly love).

- There is a father/son conversation between Nick/Scotty that is PRICELESS! That alone makes this book a must-read!

- Agent Hill is my new favorite character in the book (well, other than Nick, of course). So looking forward to more of him in future books.

- LOVE THIS SERIES

I'm not sure what it is about this one I didn't like as much as the previous books in the series. A solid 3.5, possibly 4 stars, but not quite. In some ways, it felt like a transitional book, setting up what's to come, as in the Agent Hill thing. I don't think its coincidence that Sam mentions waiting for problems to start, striking up a tentative friendship with him, and this VP issue she's going to have with Nick. Because we know she's going to have a problem with him not telling her about it, and it can't be more obvious how much Nick wants it. In a way, it would make me glad to see some realistic tension develop in the story. And I think that's where my issues with this come into play - everything else in the book, including the murder, seemed to take a backseat to set-up for future novels. All of it felt rushed.

Reread to 2/2016 for a challenge, even better the second time around because Sam and her wild cowboy tactics seem to be calming down. Some excellent detective work.

Original review 8/2013

Another excellent entry, crime was good but relationship wise it had a huge plus with lots of Nick, Sam & Scotty. But I missed the tidbits with the other character couples. Avery has a huge plus side, he just needs the right mate for a couple worthy of a Sam & Nick comparison, Shelby's great but she'd be a better fit for Dr Harry who I missed in this update. Look at me I'm plotting and matchmaking.

Solid 4.5"

I love this book so much, and have now read it numerous times. As Sam and Nick return with a bang, when threats against them ramp up thanks to Sam's last case, and the city begins to riot after the D.C. Federals lose their chance to get to the World Series, much to the dismay of Nick, Sam and their son Scotty. But before Sam can worry about any of that the deaths start piling up, and she soon has to deal with a city full of suspects, Scotty's sadness, Nick's upcoming election and the unwanted return of FBI Special Agent Avery Hill. And it is utterly compelling, suspenseful and extremely entertaining to read.

Would definitely recommend.

I'm loving this series by Marie Force. It works to be following the same couple book after book. The homicide cases are intriguing and I can't put any of the books down. The only negatives are that I don't know I really like where Sam and Nick's love life is going and there is some repetition that occurs, probably out of necessity as this is a series. Also sometimes it's hard to tolerate Sam's beliefs which may in fact be the author's beliefs- not sure- depends on what side of the political spectrum you lie. Overall great job on this series as is the Gansett Island series. Can't wait for book 7 and in the meantime, I could be heading back to Gansett Island very soon.
