The Foreboding ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 📚 Science Fiction 🎶 Electric Slide
One sentence synopsis: Through eye opening discovery of scientific truths beyond her wildest dreams, Shiloh must learn to trust herself and her new friends to fight the power of obsession and control threatening to obliterate all she holds most dear.
My review: This was very good! It’s also very hard to describe and put into a box, but I will try. It flirts with a lot of different ideas/genres/possibilities. Is it fantasy, magical, science fiction? I don’t really know. But there’s some interesting stuff going on in there.
Fans of the show Black Mirror and Fringe will love this! Ooo Fringe. Do y’all remember that show? It was so good! This book I think is most like that. And a little bit of Matilda too.
This book did get a little science heavy for me and I found myself skimming a smidge on some of the more technical sounding descriptions. But it wasn’t so much that it lost its focus. And the author did a good job taking something that could be confusing to some (🙋🏻♀️) and make it more approachable.
If you like books that are described as mysterious, eerie, smart, and a little bit strange then this book is for you
I had the honor to beta-read this book and it absolutely did not disappoint.
The Foreboding is an exciting thrill ride that expertly examines the strength and complexity of the human mind and the power and tenacity of the human soul
You will fall in love with the Shiloh and be fighting for her by the end!
I am so honored to have been one of the first to read and review The Foreboding by M.J. Foley!! For fans of scifi with mind bending skills, science facts, and the thrill of impending doom, I highly recommend this book!
I loved the psychokinetic manipulation and science facts that came with it. I found it to be absolutely fascinating! It had nerdy dark academia vibes, that some might liken to Dr. Who or maybe The Umbrella Academy? I also had some Blake Crouch nostalgia whilst flying through this brilliant story. The cast of characters are quirky, and make for a great found family.
I was lucky enough to receive a copy of this debut (hand delivered from Colorado, by the author itself!) and loved how original it was!
The best way I could think to describe this would be: Blake Crouch + The Shadows by Alex North. This is a speculative fiction/ sci-fi thriller that broaches themes like control, manipulation, good vs. evil, and more while also discussing the strengths and power of the human mind and how remarkable, yet scary it can be.
One thing I immediately loved was how atmospheric it was. There were moments where I genuinely felt like I was there with our MC, Shiloh, while she experienced strange happenings around her. It was eerie and unsettling at times, but that’s what made it so intriguing. While it did take a few chapters to set the scene and get into the thick of it all, once a certain point hit it was hard to put down.
Some of the sci-fi elements that appeared were the ideas of psychokinesis & psychomanipulation— two concepts that while aren’t actually a thing (yet...), but made for some insightful commentary and thought. For example, what if you could will your mind to do cool things like move a book? Or on the darker side, what if people had the ability to access someone else’s subconscious and used this manipulation for their own good?
The plot itself was interesting as we followed Shiloh and her introduction to the world of psychokinesis and the realization that she herself is in the center of a lot of it. I enjoyed the other characters and the found family element there as this group of people worked together to stop the evil force of someone who seems to have gone rogue with their own agenda.
As for the science-y aspect of the writing, for the most part I found it easy to follow. Science was never a strong subject for myself, so it’s not unusual for some of the language in a sci-fi to go over my head, but I think the author did a nice job of making this story feel accessible for anyone to understand.
Overall it was an impressive debut and I would recommend if you like speculative thrillers and thought provoking reads!

----- THOUGHTS
When the author reached out a few months ago to tell me about her debut novel - a speculative fiction with thriller elements - I was immediately intrigued. THE FOREBODING combines theoretical science, an antagonist hell-bent on harnessing power for his own purposes and dark academia vibes into a high-suspense read that I binged in a day.
While the exploration of the power of the mind and the potential danger it presents is a core part of the story, THE FOREBODING also touches on the dark side of both knowledge and love - including the tragedy and destruction that can be left in their wake.
THE FOREBODING can be dark and unsettling at times, but what helps balance this is the found family element. Some of the characters are a bit quirky and I didn't connect to all of them right away, but I ultimately found myself quite attached to the eclectic group of academics and invested in Shiloh's journey to find her place in the world.
Although THE FOREBODING is a little slow to start, the latter half of the book delivered on that thriller-feel of not wanting to put it down. For those of you who might be scared off by the science-y element, I found it pretty well balanced. A few things went a little over my head, but for the most part, it was presented in a digestible way.
I had the honor of being amongst the first readers of M.J. Foley’s debut novel and it did NOT disappoint!! This book is like a combination of science meets the movie Avatar, meets the found family trope, meets evil genius. I wasn’t sure if I would even understand the science described throughout but it was written well enough that I was able to understand and follow along. I loved the unlikely friendships and bonds that were created amongst the main characters and I loved the growth Shiloh experienced throughout. This book was unputdownable and I literally did not put it down until it was done. M.J…. I want another!!

This one packs a real punch! It’s hard to classify it into one specific genre, as it has lots of elements of sci-fi and mystery, but also found family and a touch of psychological horror.
By far one of the more unique and speculative books I have read in a long time, the author certainly keeps you guessing. It’s fast-paced, creative, and truly bizarre. think like X-Files meets Fear Street and Stranger Things.
My favorite part is the in-between chapters, which are from the perspective of the villain. They start out very short, and as the story continues the interludes get longer and more detailed. He is dark and savage and cruel.
This was a fun and quick read, and I’m so glad to have connected with MJ- a truly passionate and kind and talented new friend.
Starting The Foreboding was an exhilarating plunge into the unknown, and I couldn't have been more thrilled about embarking on this journey.
From the very first page, I found myself utterly engrossed, piecing together the puzzle as if I were a part of the narrative. The sense of intrigue and anticipation woven into the storyline gave me a constant sense of foreboding, drawing me in deeper with each passing chapter. It was almost as if I was walking in step with the protagonist, Shiloh, as she unraveled the layers of mystery surrounding her. The foreboding shrouding her discoveries and the enigmatic nature of her ally kept me on the edge of my seat, hungry to uncover their secrets.
One of the most remarkable aspects of The Foreboding was the seamless integration of scientific principles and theories into every twist and turn of the plot. This not only added a layer of authenticity to the narrative but also allowed me to forge a genuine connection with Shiloh and her eclectic group of companions. Their dynamic camaraderie and unwavering support for one another, especially in their mission to decipher the foreboding, resonated deeply. It was a symphony of distinct personalities, harmoniously collaborating to create a tapestry of friendship that enveloped me as a reader.
☀️☕️ Saturday morning coffee & a book review featuring “The Foreboding” by MJ Foley ☕️☀️
Shiloh decides to choose happiness as she picks up and leaves her old life behind in search for so much more. She arrives in a new city and is able to sign a 6 month lease. Finally she has a place of her own and she can breathe … or so she thinks.
There tends to be a darkness lurking within her new apartment that causes Shiloh to have terrifying nightmares. She also keeps finding dark and sinister slips of paper that reveals SOMEONES secrets. These uncomfortable past hidden truths start to take over her subconscious.
This book is definitely outside of my comfort zone as it is more of a science fiction thriller, but I found it very interesting and I did not get lost in all the science! With themes of good vs evil, mind control and the dark side of knowledge, fans of The X Files, Stranger Things and Black Mirror will enjoy this story!
Thank you kindly to @m.j._foley.author @newdegreepress for my gifted copy in exchange for my honest review! This book is out now!
Woah. I was worried this book would be way over my head, but it wasn’t. MJ Foley does a great job of making the science understandable for the reader. The Foreboding really got my mind thinking and intrigued. The book was thrilling and kept my interest and had shorter chapters (which is a big plus for me). I got Witchy Matilda vibes from it and loved that the story covered a familial aspect as well as the psychokinesis and science.
Wow, what a ride! Sci-fi alternate reality thriller. So engaging. So…different. Blake Crouch kind of thinking. And as someone who loves trees, even better! Hard to put down. Smart writing, and got my adrenaline going! This was a really unique book, and impressive as a debut! Read it with an open mind and enjoy the ride!
This short, novel manages to distill complex concepts into digestible nuggets, making it accessible to a wide range of readers. What I appreciated most about the book was its dark and slightly eerie atmosphere, reminiscent of beloved TV series like 'Stranger Things' and 'Black Mirror.' The author masterfully creates a sense of foreboding that keeps you hooked from start to finish. It's the perfect choice for a crisp fall Colorado night, offering an intriguing blend of science fiction and suspense that's sure to leave you pondering its themes long after you've turned the last page!
I cannot wait to see what else this author has in store for her next novel this book is just the start.
3.5 Unique storyline! Loved the thriller/sci-fi vibes. I'm a sucker for found family so that was my favorite part of the story. A great cast of characters. I learned a lot about the human brain while reading so that's a plus!
The Foreboding was terrific!! I usually don’t pick up science fiction book but this book was so rooted in the science part and M.J.’s research that it seemed like I was reading a book about the potential future. The characters were really dynamic and the book created a strong feeling of place. There were a few phrases that have stayed with me long after finishing the book — really well written.
I was a little nervous reading this one bcuz it’s way outside of my reading comfort zone and sci-fi / fantasy ish is not my thing , buttttt this has a thriller , mystery element to it, and I actually really enjoyed it !!! It has stranger things / Black Mirror vibes, so if you like those type of shows I think you’d really like this one !!
Thank you so much to the author who reached out and gifted me her book to review !! You got me out of my comfort zone and I may even branch out a little now , who knows 🥰🥰

Loved this book, suspenseful, got me to ponder about the human mind and the infinite power it is. The ending was not what I expected, I was kept thinking how it would end. Looking forward to the next book - hopefully - from this author!!!
This was such an enjoyable read. I loved the character development and was immediately pulled into the story. I didn’t want it to end. I can’t wait to read future books by this amazing author!
As with several other indie novels I’ve reviewed, I found this one through a FB group I am in.
The synopsis of the The Foreboding intrigued me. Here is the description from its Amazon webpage:
Destination drawn unceremoniously from a hat, quiet, bookish Shiloh leaves her cliché life and all the expectations that went with it without any intention of looking back. The novel has a strong start. I was especially impressed with the quality of writing in the Author’s Note — and the novel premise of its story. However, and sadly for this reader, while the novel did deliver a story that bends and challenges our conceptions of physics and nature, the novel failed to engage me emotionally and create a landscape of possibility beyond the microcosmic world of its characters.
My personal preference is for character-based literary fiction, stories in which the human connection is the fulcrum around which the rest revolves. The Foreboding lacked the character development I wanted. Shiloh came through as a distinct, fleshy voice, a strong presence as the novel’s lead protagonist, but Margaret and the others felt flattened, making it difficult to understand their motivations and purpose in the novel, especially in their interactions with Shiloh. In some parts, the dialogue — even Shiloh’s — felt contrived; likely as a result of a lack of character development, their words sounded hollow, conveying the author’s voice and intent more than their own.
For this reader, the story required smoother introductions into its concepts and more nuanced context to both bring the landscape around its events to life, and highlight its events as a singular. The world Foley suggests is an unique and intriguing one, but this quality is obscured by a too-casual framing of those events.
All this said, The Foreboding delivers on other points. First, it is technically well-written. There are few, if any, typographical errors. Its syntax, grammar, structure, and organization are largely correct, and were clearly considered with care. Second, the author has an interesting, original, and creative premise. There is a story here worth the telling, even if this reader found its delivery lacking.
As such, my overall review is mixed. Readers should read The Foreboding themselves, as they may find their experience of it to differ from my own. The novel can be purchased on Amazon. The paperback is $16.83, the hardback $27.43, and the ebook is available on Kindle Unlimited and for purchase for $3.99.
