Years ago, the historical Marshall Street Baths in the heart of Soho were full of kids taking swimming lessons and playing in the water. Today they're crowded with addicts, homeless people and, DI Jessie Driver's new boss thinks, a teenage runaway they're trying to track. But when CID searches the decaying building, they don't find Anna Maria Klein--but they do find a man's mummified body buried in the ground in the rat-infested basement. Who was he? How long has he been there? And what happened to him?
Jessie, on the outs with her by-the-book new boss, tackles this mystery from the bowels of the Marshall Street Baths instead of the higher-profile runaway case. She's got the eccentric caretaker of the building to help her, but he seems fixated on the day a young boy drowned at the baths, many years ago. Plus, a local priest seems intent on giving his opinions, which are decidedly more otherworldly than Jessie would like. All in all, The Unquiet Dead is a fresh and pulse-pounding second novel in this streetwise procedural series from up-and-coming suspense talent Gay Longworth.
Murder mystery with a hint of paranormal activity. Jessie has been tasked with solving the crime of a mummified man that also involves a missing woman, a drowned teenager, and a man who has lost his mind. As jessie tries to travel this big web of clues she also has to keep everything quiet and watch her every move. She isnt sure who is trying to help and who is against her, but she knows for sure in her mind there is more to the stories.
I started this one right after finishing the first book in the series, "Dead Alone". I liked this one much better. The previous book had a bunch of eccentric characters that were quite unbelievable, and the perp had serial killer traumatized-by-mommy vibes, whereas this book describes rather ordinary people doing terrible things and, somehow this books rings more true.
This is the second book by Longworth (I have not read the first)centering around the motorbike riding DI Jessie Driver. The mystery has many levels but all lead to the Marshall Street Baths, a public spa due for destruction. Death haunts the building as a body is discovered that has been entombed there for many years. Complex connections surround the identity of the corpse and lead DI Driver into kidnapping, exorcism, rock stars, and hidden motives. It is all tied up very smartly and is a satisfying story. Well written and recommended.
I actually bought this book from a $2 bin at the biggest morning tea. Only now have I realised it was a two part series haha I really enjoed the read even thoigh i more or less came in a bit far ( understanding the relationship more with DJ and the rich man. Definately have to go back and re read with book one now :)
