"You're the most important decision I've ever made. Don't ever forget that I chose to be with you. I was never forced to be with you. And you've never been forced to be with me."

The Beam is book two in The Chrysalis series by Michel Prince. One of the things that makes this book different from book one, Chrysalis, is the level or the paranormal aspect. In book one we are introduced to it fairly late in the book but in this book it is there almost from the very start. And while it's not spoken about all the time it is present as an underlying current throughout as we wait to see what will transpire. And when we do encounter it , there is enough action to keep us going until the next time.

Oscar and Elli's love was what I loved most about Chrysalis and in book two their love is stronger than ever, but that doesn't mean that things go smoothly for the two of them. There are outside forces trying to tear them apart. Aside from the paranormal threat there are girls after Oscar, and Ellie's mum trying to input herself into Ellie's life and force her away from Oscar. But there are also issues coming from inside the relationship. Oscar is quite strong willed and can at times seem overbearing but there are also Ellie's insecurities. She has an inner monologue going on inside her head and that forces her to question herself as well as Oscar. She begins to loose sight of the girl she was and the girl that she wants to be.

"We're going to make it. It won't be easy, but if you trust me I promise it'll be worth it."

Ellie and Oscar have an ease about them when they are together and things are going good. But I did feel at times that they were each at fault in causing issues in their relationship and that went to show how young they both actually are. I think that there were times that they both showed that they have some growing up to do before they can take the next step in their relationship.

There were a lot of movie references in The Beam and not being a movie buff there were times that it went over my head a bit but I did appreciate the reasons that they were included and there were some that were mentioned that I'm definitely going to check out.

Overall The Beam was a great follow on from book one and a really good read and I'm definitely a fan of Michel Prince's writing. Looking forward to the release of book three Not Even Death in May.

The Beam, by Michel Prince is the second installment in the Chrysalis series. This New Adult book takes up where the series starter, Chrysalis, left off. With now high school junior/senior Ellie working to finish school early, while Oscar has started college. Ellie and Oscar seem to have settled into a comfortable relationship, until the demons reappear and they find out that while they, Ellie and Oscar, cannot be hurt, their family and friends can.

The book continues on in the same vain as the first book, with one twist, it keeps jumping between time: It starts in September 2010, then jumps to June 2010, then back to September, then flashed to the time of Lilith, back to September and then to August; this all within the first 20% of the book. I enjoyed this book more than the first book, but still felt that it included things that distracted from the story. I still loved the romance between Ellie and Oscar. I was even happier to see the interaction between Ellie, Oscar and Oscar’s father. The scenes with the three of them are my favorite in the book. The scenes with Max, Kelly, Oscar and Ellie are also enjoyable.

What most pleased me in this work was the development of Ellie as a stronger character. Now I do not believe she has become a strong person, just stronger than she was. The way the author uses the love between her and Oscar to see the development of that strength was wonderful. The way the author wrote the final chapter of the book, with the twist was clever and showed me her abilities as an author that I did not see in much of the book. The way this book ended leads me to believe there will be another installment in this series. I must add that I am not sure what the title has to do with the book.

This book is the sequal to Chrysalis and where Ellie came out of her cocoon in that book, she's now on a full path towards adulthood, even though she's still physically young. She and Oscar have gone further in their relationship and Ellie is working harder as she learns how to work her powers.

It is important to read the first book to fully understand what is going on in this book--the story is very much a continuation.

The characters continue to grow in this volume and there is even more action. I didn't find the connection with the characters, though, as much as I did in the first book--maybe because there were times when I felt that Ellie was too easily swayed by the doubts she had worked on in Chrysalis. After a year of being together, it seemed like she was still not trusting Oscar enough. That bothered me because he bent over backwards to be there for her.

Even with that, I'm glad I read the second book to see what finally happened with Ellie's parents and have that part of the story wrapped up.

Reviewer for Paranormal Romance and Authors that Rock

I give it 4.5 fangs.

The Beam: Book Two of the Chrysalis Series by Michel Prince. I would highly suggest reading book one before this on. I would suggest this book for young adults and adults.

Ellie and Oscar are the main characters and are soul mates or love of each other’s lives. Oscar is now in college and Ellie is fast tracking to graduate from High School a year early. Ellie’s family is cursed by a demon. And Ellie has to break the curse. With the help of Katie and Max, who are actually angels, they try to stop the darkness that falls over Ellie’s family.

In this story we see Ellie having more issues with believing in herself and willing to trust those she loves. In the end she will have to fight the demon “Gaap”, but is she strong enough.

Without giving away any spoilers, if you like young romance thrown in with demons, then you will like this book.
