October 4th, A.M. at ship; in lat. 38 25'N.; altitude Sun's lower limb 30 21' 10"; eye 21 feet; time by chronometer 3d 19b 34m 14", which was fast for mean noon at Greenwich lm 5" on September 2nd, and on July 2nd was lm 5" slow for mean noon at Greenwich; index error + 41". Required the longitude. 10. 1874. October 4th, at 9h 13m A.M., mean time at ship; in lat. 30 39' S.; long. 40 39' B.; Sun's bearing by compass N. 67 30' E.; alt. Sun's lower limb 44 39' 40"; eye 22 feet; index error + 39". Required the error of the compass; and supposing the variation to be 24 W., Required the deviation of the compass for that position of the ship's head. 11. 1874. October 23rd, A.M. at ship; lat. by ace. 49 37'; long. 16 E.; altitude Sun's lower limb North of observer 51 29' 25"; eye 26 feet; time by watch 12h 5m 34", which was fast for apparent time at ship 14m 58s; diff. long, made West was 9' after the error was found. Required the latitude by reduction to the meridian. 12. 1874. October 12th.--Meridian altitude of the star Sirius 55 29' bearing S.; eye 21 feet; index error--1' 30". Required the latitude.
