Witch Hollow #1

Witch Hollow and the Wrong Spell

Rate this book
That spell was wrong!

When three young witches, Electra, Cassandra, and Medea, decided to practice witchcraft, they had no idea what consequences the wrong spell would have. Specters that lurk in the town, a ghost house in the middle of the dark forest, and an old witch with an eerie wail are their minor problems.

Meanwhile, sixteen-year-old Eric O’Brian is sent to live in a small town named Hollow as a punishment for his constant truancy and bad behavior. Shortly he finds out that the beautiful town full of colorful ravines, green highlands, and dense forests is not an ordinary one: flowers that whisper, a strange Old Curiosity Shop that steals the time, and a hanged man coming to life on the Halloween night lead him to believe that Hollow is a mystical place inhabited by witches.

After meeting the mysterious red-haired girls and befriending them, Eric becomes a part of the world with time travels, medieval bards, flying brooms, and paintings with parallel reality.

Then a murder happens in Hollow...

A bonus for the poetry lovers: “Witch Hollow” series are full of beautiful poetry.

For readers age 12 and up.

This cover totally sold me on the book when I ran across it. I love the color scheme, the slightly creepy October vibe, the witch flying dead center against the bright, full moon…. Never underestimate the power of a good cover. Thankfully, the story lived up to it.

Thoughts:
Oh my goodness, I had such a fun time reading this. I love books I can just melt into. The story starts when the 3 cousins, who are as close as sisters, decide to try a spell. Medea has keen eyesight and a terrific knowledge of magical plants. Cassandra warned of signs and especially not to do spells during thunderstorms. Electra is an optimistic individual, who draws and sketches. But they really just want to do something fun, something different. However, the spell doesn’t go quite as planned and something unexpected happens. Then while the girls are going about their adventure a new boy arrives in town named Eric – a very non-magical boy who is living with his aunt, uncle, and two cousins for a while.

One thing that plays a very significant role in Witch Hollow and the Wrong Spell are the town and townspeople. The town of Hollow is deeply divided between those that live on the east side of the river and those that live on the west. Unlike other books where magic may not be known to everyone in a community or kept secret, this is not the case in Hollow. Although magic and those who practice aren’t secret, they are very, very unwelcome in the east side. The anger and fear of those who do magic is palpable and the townspeople are very prejudiced. But instead of just telling you the town is deeply divided there are numerous events that occur with many different side characters to demonstrate this, which is really one of the things I really liked with this book. There is no shortage of townspeople written into the story who expose the dynamics of the town.

Besides the interesting town and townspeople, what I really loved while reading the book was how the story moved along rather nicely and never really had any dull moments for me. From the 3 cousins, to Eric and his potential love interests, to the dynamics of the townspeople there was always something occurring or helping me further understand the town, while never weighing it down. However, there were a couple of things that I noticed when reading that stopped it from being perfect. There were a few awkward dialogue moments toward the latter half of the book that stuck out, and the reason Eric came to live with his aunt and uncle felt a bit odd, but that part only lasts a page or two and once he’s in town everything feels natural. Overall, it was an easy, pleasant read and I look forward to continuing the series. Plus it has a little romance, which is always nice too.

Rating: 4.5

How often these days can you say that you just read a lovely, sweet story? The YA stories these days seem to be all about angst, teenage lust-triangles, vicious werewolves and vampires. In other words, dark.

This is a ‘supernatural’ story, but entirely different from the norm. Three young witches, Electra, Cassandra and Medea, live in a small village where once witchcraft was the norm. Now, witches are confined to living on ‘the other side of the river’ (read, “the other side of the tracks”) and magic is frowned upon. Never fear, the girls are determined to learn magic spells, even if their Aunt Andromeda frowns on it! Along comes Eric O’Brian, sent to live in the village of Hollow because of his bad hehavious, because you know YA books have to have a ‘boy-interest,’ right?

What happens next is just plain fun. There is funny magic, flying brooms and mystery, oh, my! If you are tired of all the angst so common amongst today’s YA novels, this is definitely the book for you. It’s lovely for your daughter (or son!) but as an adult, I found it just as much fun.

Try it. It is a bit slow at the first, but don’t let that stop you. This is the first of a series (three so far) and I look forward to reading the rest.

I kind of feel bad for two starring this book. It wasn't terrible but I also didn't finish it. I read until 39% done.

So what happened that I threw the towel in and stopped?

Well, I just couldn't get into the story. I really tried. It seemed like at any moment is was going to take off and be really interesting...but by 39% it just hadn't drawn me in.

Also, at 38% (on my Kindle Touch), I started running into missing words and sentences. A few pages into 39% and it was still happening. About that time I sat back and asked myself if I would be bothered by not finishing this book (Sometimes a book will stick in my head and demand my attention). My answer was no. So, I decided that this book too is going onto my DNF list.

I did pick the book up for free. The author, after I one starred another one of her books, sent me the link to this one during a free promotion. I read the blurb and thought "hey, this doesn't sound too bad".

Well, it wasn't a bad book. Generally speaking, for those who enjoy YA books and witchcraft, it isn't bad at all...But, it just didn't have that special something that can draw you in and make the real world disappear for me.

If you enjoy YA books, that are kind of cutesie, and definitely written for the 12-16 age range, this maybe an okay book for you.

If you want your books to be a little wilder and a little crazy, look somewhere else.

I would have liked to see the story be a little more urgent than it was.

I RECEIVED A FREE COPY OF THIS BOOK IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW

I am giving this book a 3 star rating, for the fact that while it had its faults, the author is not an english speaking native, so therefore i took that into account.

The story had really good bones to it and when it was flowing it flowed well.

There were a few things about this story that rubbed me the wrong way. Eric had no issues believing in Witches, but Merpeople...thats crazy talk.
When reading paranormal books and characters can accept 1 species but not another, kinda racist.

I.D Blind uses some bizarre words, that i had to look up as i was reading, like aiguilles, and niveous.
Now these don't even come up on spell check, and i in no way think myself dumb, but having to constantly stop and search the meaning of words took away from my reading pleasure.

(Putting this down to the language barrier) The conversations felt unnatural ans stilted. At one point Eric asks Dinah about her mum, but instead of asking about her mum he asks about Mrs McCormack.

Characters were brought into the story for seemingly no reason just to appear later with stories of Eric cheating on certain girls. The characters were unmemorable and i was often left wondering who the heck they were.

I actually tried to read this last October (as one of my spooky/Halloween stories), but never made it past the halfway point. I did manage to finish it this time, but the fact that this extremely simple book took so long speaks volumes about the quality of the storytelling. It is very poorly written, lacks character depth and development, fails to adequately create tension in either the mystery or romance, and is riddled with grammatical errors. I think it’s supposed to be a YA book, but it’s written at a grade school level. Thank god it was free.

Wonderful story for adults and children

A captivating and imaginative book that I couldn't put down, and will be on the top of the list of stories to read to my grandchildren. This a wonderful way to teach kids, and a lot of adults about being responsible for your actions and their consequences.

Not really my type of story, but it was an okay read. I feel like there really wasn't much to the book. I thought the picture frame part was cool and the ending was nice too.

If I’m being honest, I probably would give this book 2.5 stars, but we’ll go with 3.

This book is all over the place. The initial premise of the story is a good one, but the tangents and weird shifts, the added side stories, it’s just too busy. And I was never really sure what time period this story is set in. There’s mention of a cell phone, but the family dynamics and town prejudices suggest 1800s. It’s very odd.

I will say that I enjoyed the relationships between the girls. They seemed to really love each other and come across as true sisters. I also quite enjoyed the relationship that pops up between Eric and Electra. They’re very sweet together.

If this story were more focused, reworked and edited, it would be sooo good. I’m hoping the second book is better. It’s off to a good start.

I had some issues with the continuities of time the way things bounced back and forth, seasons changing suddenly, etc but for a middle grade reader (vs the parent of) wouldn't notice it nearly as keenly. The characters are interesting, not as fleshed as if this were an older reader book but well enough.
The mystery of the creature created by the "wrong spell" as well as the murder held my focus enough that I didn't even mind the issues I mentioned above. The answers did sufficiently surprise me in a way that hearkened me to my days of reading the original Nancy Drew stories of my youth. I'll likely pick up book two soon.

A quick and easy read

This book was ok. Not very difficult to read and was really quick. I would have liked more details about the life of the main character. If it were not for the fact that it is about witchcraft ( my favorite topic) I would have moved on.

Did not finish. Writing couldn't decide if it was middle grade or including thesaurus words, so not sure if I should be reviewing this as middle grade or YA. I found it stilted and choppy.

** Review written for an originally posted on my blog, Book Bliss.I received a copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased and honest review**

Review: 4 stars

General: This book brings some of the simplicity back to YA/NA novels. There is nothing epic status plot wise, nothing that could end the world as we know. No hot steamy sex, no dealing with suicides. It was simply a wonderful look into the world I.D. Blind created that kids as well as teens could easily read and enjoy.

Hollow itself was great and the world was a simple spin to the real world that was easy to get into and even easier to imagine yourself in as you were reading. The book was filled with cute and comedic moments set inside the murder mystery plot, that was also not over the top and extremely believable for the age range of the characters. I enjoyed reading something that dealt with a little less drama and a little more fun for the main characters being the age they were. Eric and Electra had some wonderful and believable interactions.

The negatives were that there were some phrases and things that seemed strange. It was well edited but after looking up the author I found out she is not a native speaker. I believe the book was written in English though so I felt it should have been caught by her editor and those little things switched to read more fluidly. Also, there were some incredibly sweet elements (the meeting) and funny moments (the opener) but overall I felt it did need a little bit of heaviness to make me care about the characters more.

Characters: Electra- Electra is an adorable teen girl. She felt true to the age and what she was. She ranged from cute and sweet to comedic and determined in the flip of a page and the diversity made her enjoyable.

Eric- Eric is the bad boy, because all teens love a bad boy right? Well so do most adults lol. He really wasn’t that bad though. Or perhaps we just haven’t seen it yet as this is a series. Overall he was fun and you could certainly feel his emotions leaping off the page. I’d like him to live up to his bad boy rep a little more next time we see him though.

is there a better way add a book to your queue besides hitting add book, then refreshing the page and then eiting it into currently reading?
This book is very obviously narrated by that "housewives" voice. I don't v remember much of the show, but it was popular andn people kept dying or being killed or whatnot.
Right now I am at 27% and Neomia totally sounds like a character from Handy Manny.
...
Finished, and in a word: Delightful. Though it did take until I was more than half wayvthrough it to become fully involved in the book. I did put it down for a available couple months before picking it up again this week.
It has a very foreign, maybe European feel to it and the language ma kes it feel slightly translated. Cant tell the time period, which is cool too.
Anyways, I picked it up free on Amazon and now wish for the next one.

Very well written

Eric was always missing school. His dad gave him another chance to not skip school again..Eric was able to do this for a while before he started skipping school again. His dad got upset and they were going to send him to his Uncle and Aunts house that lived in a place that isn't on the map and his Uncle would put him to work doing manual labor. While he was there and meet a beautiful girl and the surroundings looked spectacular. However, he met 3 witches, Cassandra, Medea and Electra. The town was divided between the east and the west side and the witches were not liked or wanted on the opposite side. Eric ended up meeting the witches and discovered what they were like. You will love reading the book and discover for yourself the surprises.

This is the story of 3 amateur witches--Medea, Cassandra, and Electra. A spell gone awry evokes something wicked.

Eric is a spoiled good-for-nothing and a newcomer to Hollow; he somehow gets in the middle of all the hocus pocus.

There's a lot of talk about Hollow (landscape, the town, the history) and story has an Old Shoppe dialogue. Ultimately, the story takes a long time to drum up interest. For instance, the first chapter is all about the witches' spell, and then it cuts to Eric and the constant babble of the town. I felt it didn't focus enough on the witches and the wrong spell. Mostly you're just muddling through it. Too bad. This could've been a decent paranormal.

This is the 2nd witch story I tried to read and it disappointed me.

love, love, loved this series! couldn't stop reading. I read all 5 books back to back. This would make a great movie. it reminded me a bit of the H. Potter books. Very easy and fun reading. Exciting with twists and turns with love, friendships, families, witches, witch hunters, ghosts, ghouls, demons and more all in a battle over Witch Hollow.
I adored the characters, the town all the mental pictures i got were due to this author stretching my vivid imagination.
I would highly recommend this author and definitely this 5 book series. so sad the journey is over. i look forward to reading this author many times over.

'Witch Hollow and the Wrong Spell' is a good YA paranormal read. I enjoyed the storyline and how it played out. The ever present rival between the east and the west in Hollow was quite interesting and based on truth- those who don't understand persons whom are 'different', (witches, etc) are feared. The unknown is something that brings out a persons fear, anger and threats towards those who are deemed evil, even in real life. The characters were great. Eric took to the unusual town and the residents quite well. Electra, Cassandra, Medea and Jack were great. well written. A good start to an interesting series. A great add to your tbr list.

On the surface, Hollow looks like any other small town. But, Hollow is different. It’s home to witches; three young witches in particular. Electra, Casandra, and Medea practice their witchcraft, but with disastrous consequences when they cast the spell incorrectly. Meanwhile, 16-year-old Eric O’Brian is sent to live in Hollow, and finds that it looks like a place stuck in the 1800s. He quickly learns that it’s more. When he meets the three sisters and becomes friends with them, he becomes part of their world.
Witch Hollow and the Wrong Spell by I.D. Blind is a cute story. The language is somewhat stilted, but the plot is tight and flows relatively well.

Didn't like the way the characters spoke - all the same and unrealistically (for some). The plot moves too slowly and while I kept feeling things would suddenly take off and get more interesting...it didn't.

Not sure who the intended audience is; I thought it was YA, but I don't see this book appealing to them because of the awkwardness.

This book started off with a promise that was never realized. The characters aren't fleshed out well and the story itself was pretty mundane considering the subject matter. I wanted to like this book but it ended up being one of those books that you can't wait to finish but for all of the wrong reasons.

Amazingly bland

Three sisters who live with their aunt, a self proclaimed healer, decide to do a spell. How their aunt does not notice is beyond me but when she is away, they perform the spell and something is released. This is a YA and just bland.

Meh. Not horrible. Didn't love it. Seemed to have continuity errors. Or maybe they weren't errors, which would be an even bigger problem. I think if the author had a professional edit the book, and cleaned up some issues it could be a cute story. Had potential.
