He destroyed lives, usurped power, undermined democracy and was a murderer. He was William Goebel, the 34th Governor of Kentucky, a man unafraid to turn the Bluegrass blood red in his pursuit of power.
Goebel is still the only governor in United States history to be put in the ground by an assassin's bullet.
Wrath - the life and assassination of a United States Governor is a telling of the people and forces that shaped William Goebel into an autocrat, Kentucky into an armed state and the assassin who delivered the final act of retribution from the barrel of a rifle.
I don't normally read "political" stories but found this to be very interesting and well written. It was an eye-opener reading how William Goebel climbed the political ladder...scary. I liked how the author mentioned the "mountain man" periodically through out the book, kept me wondering what his connection to Goebel was and kept me wanting to turn the page. I would definitely read more by Howard McEwen.
I won this book as a good reads first reads winner. I really enjoyed the book. The way of the politics world is so unbelievable, yet believable and interesting. Goebel holds a major grudge and because of that, becomes a very powerful man, but not without consequences! A great read!
I found this book in the non-fiction section of the library and being from KY I was intrigued. I knew we had a governor assassinated but not much else and was ready to learn more.
A few pages in I realized this was pure fiction based loosely on historical figures. However, it was well paced and played out like a tawdry reality show you know is crap but can't stop watching.
I enjoyed it but will try to find a more factual book on Gov. Goebel
