I love this series! I still remember how I found this black-covered (Indonesian version) graphic novel on a manga stack at local bookstore. This series is so classy, I can even compare it to today’s Cable TV series.
The international adventures of this blue suited half-English half-Japanese Taichi Keaton are unique and interesting.
Master Keaton has it's typical action scene, but don't expect Hollywood’s B movies kind of action, it doesn't get you to the edge of your seat. The flow is rather slow, more Asia-like, and almost poetic.
The plot and twist is simple. But the way it that make the difference. The way the picture put in each channel successfully capture the feeling of the character, makes you feel what you suppose to feel at the moment, sort of.
A must read!

I remember reading this series up to volume 10 in Indonesian, and it's just stopped there. Despite Keaton's down-to-earth situation, stories, coverages and characters, I guess serious series weren't very selling in Indonesia at that time. Oh well.
In my opinion, the most notable point in this series is its wide range of characters. From Keaton's mother (the one with Persephone personality, or so did his father put so) to Gen (Ret.) Yuri (a former Soviet military elite-turn-terrorist) and from a Japanese so-called "yellow cab" woman (equivalent to a prostitute) to Saddam Hussein's General aptly nicknamed Eagle of Karoon, it's a wonder. That, and Katsushika-sensei's characterizations.

from all of manga that I ever read, so far Master Keaton is still the best !
A lecturer, archaeologist, ex- SAR chief commander, and an insurance private investigator, Keaton was not like any other heroine, he was humble and down-to-earth, just like any other regular guy that you'll see in station or cafe, but his unique abilities and knowledge brought to many unusual adventures.
I personally like how he managed to survive and escape from deadly desert, or how he could turn many usual things into a weapon. but somehow I wonder why Keaton was so obsess about Danube river, he had a theory that the source of civilization came from that river, so he'd been doing some research about it
the main character, off course was Keaton himself, but there were some short epic stories about his father and his teenage daughter.
Although that the picture is so-so , but the story was very well-written, and I believe the writer had done some research before making them, and that's the best part of this manga ! coz it makes you think after reading it without causing any brain damages, heheee

serial manga detektif pertama yang pernah saya baca. sayangnya, di indonesia memang lebih terkenal conan dan kindaichi. padahal master keaton kaya akan ilmu, tidak hanya tentang detektif, tapi juga sejarah dan cara survival. hal ini karena latar belakang keaton selain sebagai detektif swasta untuk asuransi terkenal juga seorang dosen arkeologi dan mantan anggota SAS yang pernah mengajar ilmu survival pada militer SAS. salah satu episode yang saya sukai adalah bagaimana dia berusaha bertahan hidup di gurun pasir. juga episode pencariannya akan asal usul suku tengu di jepang.

Smart Keaton. Tidak mudah menyerah dan panjang akal. Patut ditiru. Jarang ada orang kayak gini di dunia. (Apa karena basic militernya ya??...)
Manga ini nggak cuma menghibur tapi juga memberi pelajaran sedikit banyak tentang dunia nyata. Sayangnya hanya 10 seri yang terbit di Indonesia. Kapan lanjutannya bisa diterbitkan ya??...

Ini komik yang humanis, sekaligus seru dan mencerdaskan. Kapan lagi bisa belajar arkeologi, sejarah perang dan intelijen, sekaligus bisa bersamaan memainkan imajinasi tentang Eropa dan Jepang. Cerita manusia yang memanusiakan dan tanpa menggurui! Cukup dengan membaca buku ini, maka "hidupmu" akan berubah. Percayalah..

Keren tapi sayang, penerbitnya angin-anginan menerbitkan. Tak sampai seri terakhir, master Keaton sudah menghilang dari peredaran. Awal perkenalan dengan Naoki Urusawa, kalau dipikir2 ada kemiripan dengan Monster dan 20th Century Boys. Bintang tiga dowank karna belum tuntas bacanya.

the idea about half english-half japanese detective is kinda interesting. Urosawa Naoki Sensei is a champion in dramatized a thrilling suspense manga, in this case a detective manga...
