Love, Lies and More Lies #1

Love, Lies & High Heels

Rate this book
Luke Galloway doesn't lie. Well, not normally. And never about anything as serious as death. But, somehow Luke’s friend and business partner, Sam Paris, convinces Luke that he needs to do just that. Sam believes the only way his daughter will come back to see him is if he were dying. And so the lies begin...

Rusty Paris has been alone most of her life. Her parents were divorced when she was very young. Rusty was pushed off to boarding schools, while her mother made a hobby of marrying rich men. She doesn't remember much about her father, only that he never made an attempt to be a part of her life for the past twenty-one years. But all that is about to change. When she gets word he is dying, she runs home to be by his side, which puts in right in the path of that scoundrel Luke Galloway.

Luke has no room in his life for rich heiresses. Been there. Done that. From the first time Luke and Rusty meet, they clash. She considers him nothing more than a lowly ranch hand who enjoys riling her temper. He considers her arrogant and prissy. But that doesn't mean he can fight his attraction to her, nor hers to him. And when they find out they've both been duped by Rusty’s father the sparks really start to fly.

Don't honestly know how I want to rate this book. I'm so frustrated with it I just can't right now or it would be bad I think. There was a stunning lack of communication in this book between the main characters. I don't mind that in small quantities but over and over and over through the whole book. I mean, if they would have sat down and had one actual meaningful conversation they could have cleared up a lot of misunderstandings...but no, they don't they just keep going on hearing partial conversations, believing nonsense instead of talking with one another and running away without fully understanding any part of any conversation. Rusty was terrible at this. Constantly making things worse because no one talked to one another! URG...just frustrated.

This book was okay. The premise is something I've seen before, but the characters were pretty interesting... in the beginning.

Rusty is a 28-year-old woman, but she strikes me more as a 16-year-old girl. And Luke, when he gets into his jealous rages, also comes across more like a teenage boy with the way he tries to "sabotage" her dating attempts.

That being said, I suppose it stands to reason that their conflict and misunderstanding towards the end of the book seem a bit overly dramatic. Also, the resolution was a bit too easy. Where was the big talk? Did they even really resolve the issues? It didn't seem very grown up and/or mature to me.

But of course, I am a sucker for happily-ever-afters, so the epilogue made me happy.

Overall, an okay, light read.

Really cute story with adorable characters. I enjoyed the plot -- even though it wasn't very original. I just always enjoy when the cowboy wins the city girl!

WOAH! For a book that was free, it was definitely worth it! I didn't really come in with high expectations because I am not so much into the whole cowboy thing. Ok, I'll be honest, I never TRIED the whole cowboy thing. This was my first cowboy book and damn was it good! The few sex scenes weren't super steamy or anything BUT the sexual tension and foreplay buildup was so hot. I think for me, personally, that's the best part. I am ALL about the sexual tension. I guess I just enjoy the anticipation. I also loved the characters. Sam was so adorable, Rusty and Luke were just plain HOT, and everyone else was just so warm and easygoing. Mrs. Smith was the best with her tell it like it is attitude. Overall, totally recommend this book. =]

While there were parts of the book I did enjoy, generally, I didn't like it. I especially didn't like the second half.

I just found it really annoying and frustrating that the characters Luke and Rusty just kept assuming the other felt a certain way about the relationship, and then acting so drastically on it. I just personally found myself annoyed most of the second half of the book, when all of their problems could have been fixed if only they stopped assuming things and started communicating.

I mean you can't expect relationships to be perfect. A book without conflict would be boring. At the same time though, I feel like the same thing was just happening over and over again, and it got really irritating really quickly.

Rusty hasn't seen her dad since she was a little kid, so when she hears that he's dying, she packs up to go be with him for as long as he has left. But she's a spoiled fish out of water, with designer duds and spiked heels that have no place on a working ranch, and her father's partner and ranch hand Luke won't let her forget it.

Okay, so I can't say I like the idea of a parent faking terminal illness to get his adult child's attention, but many books I've loved have started off even crazier than that, so I figured I'd give it a shot.

The story hooked me right away. From the awkward confrontation with Rusty's stalker-y ex to Luke's admission that he'd done prison time, it was gearing up to be an awesome case of opposites attract. But the more I turned the pages, the more irritated I got with both of them.

First, I didn't like the way Luke was so judgmental of Rusty. One look at her designer shoes and manicured nails, and he decided she was a spoiled rotten princess who didn't deserve any of his respect, much less affection. I could understand the first impression, and who among us doesn't make the wrong call about people sometimes? But he was mean about, and that didn't sit so well with me.

My real problem, though, was Rusty's naïveté. What started out as cute, like forgetting her coat because the winters she was used to were the mild Florida ones, went a bit too far as the book went on. Early on, she assumed the hotel they'd be stuck in would be the kind of place with lobster and a masseuse, and while I understood her being used to those things, I thought she'd be smarter than to assume the only available room in a snow storm would be something in the five-star range. But what really got me was her immediate determination to get herself knocked up because her father wanted grandchildren. In fact, her dad's scheming seemed more like some kind of slapstick thing from a sitcom than a somewhat believable story plot, and Rusty's acceptance without question had me quickly doubting her intelligence. Why didn't she immediately Google the made-up disease he claimed to be dying from? Why didn't she know that a small town grocery store probably wouldn't have the high-end gourmet foods she was used to? Why didn't she try to work out why her father had abandoned her as a child before deciding making a baby with some random guy was a good idea?

At 40%, I gave up trying to make sense of it and decided I should pick something else to read.

Honestly, I downloaded this ebook from iTunes since it's free and out of curiosity. Turns out that it deserves a good review.

Set in the rural areas of Kentucky, heiress Rusty Paris is forced to come home by a certain Luke Galloway, a man sent by her father to tell her about his dying condition. Little did she know her father Sam, made it all up and just wants to spend time with her and wants to know if she still cares for him despite the years of being distant.

Luke, who's actually Sam's business partner in the horse farm and whom he considers his son, doesn't want anything to do with Rusty and neither does she. But you can't tell your heart what and not to do when things get a little bit tangled.

So basically that's the gist of the story and I find the hero and heroine adorable and charming. Both are stubborn and their chemistry is undeniable. I actually found this story cute and romantic, and enjoyed it as one of my late-night reads.

I rate this book at 2-1/2 stars (not sure how to do that). I liked the main characters, Luke and Rusty, and I enjoyed the setting of the ranch in Kentucky as well as some of the story line. What drove me crazy was the "junior high-like" communication behavior of Luke and Rusty. The story was pretty predictable but it took forever to get to the happy ending. In fact, it didn't happen until the last two or three pages and that was after having to read through their missed opportunities over and over again. Since this was a free ebook, I gave the author the benefit of reading the entire book but, honestly I could have skipped several chapters and still gotten the gist of the story.
If you like light romantic novels, you may enjoy this but be prepared for some frustration!!

A cute book ! Recently I've read many books that include ranches, and a country type background. The general plot being from being a nobody/ alone you do to having everything. Then a mistake happens it gets fixed and then happy ending.

This book I enjoyed. The plot and characters were presented in a good/ relatable way. The hate love relationship between Luke and Rusty made me crack up. This book is funny and comical. The cover I think is pretty but a picture of the 3 main characters on the ranch would've drawn me more towards the book. The title is appropriate however didn't draw me in. Maybe Deception and Ranch Boys would've been more catchy .....

I was honestly enjoying this book until the ending. I felt emotionally attached to Luke early on.... and every time Rusty hurt his feelings, I wanted to beat her. She eventually grew on me and then with all of the non-communicated misunderstandings between them, I was frustrated. One would think with that kind of frustration, I'd be eager for this story to end. However, I felt like the ending was rushed. I found myself upset because it ended. Strange, I know.

Anyhoo.... I give this book a solid 3 stars. I'm not jumping up and down. I did become attached to the main characters, but not so much that I'll still be thinking about this book tomorrow.

Good Read.

I enjoyed this story line alot, and would have given it 4 stars had it not been for the way the ending went. Up until the end though I very much enjoyed the characters, and I wouldn't mind reading more from this author.

Very good

This was a well written romance. The author brought the characters to life. The storyline was good. I ha e two complaints though, it dragged on a bit, and the female lead was a bit dense.

Love, Lies, & High Heels is a western romance by Debbie Conrad. It is a delightful light read. It is full of surprises.
Luke Galloway helped Sam Paris develop his Kentucky farm into a viable operation. They raised, raced, sold, and studded Kentucky race horses. From an almost penniless man, Sam is now well-off as is his partner Luke. Luke has a prison record from his youth. A group of boys decided to go joyriding in Luke’s step-father’s car. Not liking Luke, his step-father pressed charges against Luke and with the Judge’s help, Luke was sentenced to three years in prison for a first offense. When he got out, Luke was determined to make good and he did. Now Sam has the “brilliant” idea to have Luke go get his daughter, Rusty, and bring her to the farm under the assumption that Sam is dying. He hasn’t had contact with her since she was a little over seven. After breaking her arm on a horse, Rusty’s mother refused to let her come back to the farm. Slowly letters between the two of them stopped and Rusty grew up without her father.
When Rusty hears Sam is dying, she wastes no time throwing clothes together to travel to Kentucky with Luke. She finds Luke overbearing and arrogant which is not a good start. Because of her mother’s death, Rusty had inherited all her Mother’s money so could easily stay with Sam for the duration of his illness. Luke asks Sam to reconsider his lie; but Sam is determined not to run Rusty off. Meanwhile, Luke has to keep his mouth shut on the lie. However, he doesn’t monitor his mouth around Rusty and begins to interfere in her attempt to date men from the area. He will not give in to the idea that he likes Rusty and she likes him. Sam puts another temptation in the way. He wants Rusty to marry and have children so he can be a doting grandfather as long as he can. Rusty sets out to find a man to marry and give her a child. Can she find one with Luke making comments all the time? Will she find out Sam is lying? What will happen then?

2.5 stars - as options are only for 2 or 3, so, I've given it 3. And only for the story line. Love the story and the whole idea of it. But, there's always but... Rusty and Luke. Oh my, they were so annoying and childish. Seriously? Like two teenagers. C'mon they were supposed to be adults, right? At first I loved a bit of love/hate relationship they had but soon I grew bored of it and then annoyed.
Apart from that I enjoyed this book.

I expected more from this book. I liked the story but the constant I love her but she doesn't love me and so on just made me want to slap both Luke and Rusty upside the head. I mean come on you spend 7 months living together after being married and barely speaking to each other? The ending was ok but it just seamed like the wrap up was rushed out in two pages.

I only read this book because it was free. This book is pretty much all about sex! Luke and Rusty have zero communication on how they feel and it was so frustrating! I also didn't like the ending. The author should have had both characters express their love more deeper than just saying "I love you".

So frustrating! These characters could not communicate. And they were supposed to do it all right and have a lovely wedding and extend the ranch and put money away for the babies. Not donate it all and never actually clear the air. What was that ending about. No. No. No.

Rustina Paris is rich and spoiled. She also hasn't seen her father Sam in many years. She's spent her time in boarding schools as her mother marries and then ends up divorcing these men. Now her mother has died, and she is all alone in the world. Or, at least, until Luke Galloway, Sam's partner and friend, shows up to convince her to move back to Kentucky where her father is. Telling her Sam is dying is just the first of the lies he tells to convince her to return.

Green-eyed Rusty is feisty (and yes, rich and spoiled), but is willing, albeit reluctantly, to go back to a place she once called home. Making Sam happy is her only goal, but getting rid of Luke might be the other. Getting off on the wrong foot, they constantly argue and bicker as well as try to ignore the growing attraction between them.

Sam is thrilled, but he wants more. Rusty married, grandchildren, and his Kentucky farm continued. Can he have it all? To what lengths go Rusty do to make him happy and give him what he wants? What will happen when the lies are uncovered?

Will Rusty and Luke succumb to their attraction? Or will Rusty return to California? Will either one of them break down to admitting how deep their feelings are for each other?

This is a contemporary romance that has a bit of spiciness mixed with the romance. It also has some humor as well as the ever ubiquitous What-the-tuck trends (green-eyed characters, winks, smirks). A few misused words, too.

This had to be just about the worst book I've read all year. Not only was the pacing horrible, but so was the plot and the writing itself. I couldn't empathize or connect with not one character.
Rusty is an heiress to her late mothers money that she acquired by a series of marriages and divorces. Yes, it starts off as a mess and certainly does not stop once to relieve you of the nonsense you just read.
Despite her unstable and fatherless childhood, she grows up to be a half decent, albeit annoying adult. She's so naive and gullible which Luke takes and runs with. Luke is easily on of the most obnoxious characters in this one. He comes off crude for no reason. All he thinks about is getting Rusty in bed. I'm not even sure how they end up together again and again. They never show understanding or communicate properly. Its just a look book full of lustful thoughts, grunts and Luke trying to express his "manliness". I found him to be abusive and invasive. Not to mention I'm pretty sure ejaculating in someone without their consent or knowledge is considered rape.

This book is exactly what the title claims it to be. Love. In the sense that the reader meets couples who are struggling with it, or rather than struggling with it, struggling with expressing their emotions.
Lies. In the sense of constant miscommunication, little white lies blossoming into bigger ones, and strain placed on relationships because of it.
High heels. In the sense of a wealthy heiress, who apparently refused to wear much of any other footwear.
It comes with nsfw romance and plenty of "beating around the bush", no innuendo intended. I feel that Rusty, as a character fell a little flat, and Luke could have used some time to man up and say what he meant rather than sulking about but then again, I am not usually that fond of romance books to begin with. Somehow, they always come with those sullen characters.
Would I read the sequel? Sure. If it fell in my hands the way this book did.
Would it be an alright book for any person who loves romance books? Sure. It does come with a happy ending which seems way too far away.

So....I wanted to LOVE this book so bad but just found it to be somewhat ok. I don’t care for Rusty at all!!!!! Her inner dialogue felt like a 12 year old spoiled brat with insecurity issues. Which considering she was obscenely wealthy and shipped off to boarding schools could be why the author wrote her that way. 🤷‍♀️ Luke was callous but not in a horrible kind of way. They lacked major communication and made themselves miserable because of it. I did like the premise of the book, that it was a love story with instant attraction but not instant love, and that it had a happy ending.

It was a cute book. I think there was too much back and forth on how the characters thought or assumed the other didn't care. I understand the purpose but it felt like the book could've skipped some of it and added more to the ending. I feel like there was great build up and then the book just started skipping chunks of time (2 months, then 7 month, then the epilogue at 3 1/2years) and the book could've gone more in depth on what happened during that time.
