An adult paranormal romance. **This book is not a YA read. This book contains several detailed sex scenes and is not suitable for young readers.**
The past is no longer a blur, the present has become a mystery, and the future remains unknown.
Kylah’s mind has been freed and her power unleashed. She is once again the loose cannon she was two hundred years ago. Everyone she loves is waiting for her to take her rightful place among The Nine. But if Kylah can't control her guilt, her anger, and her conflicting desires, she may yet again ruin the lives of those she loves.
After spending two hundred years thinking his mate was dead, Aerric finally has the love of his life back in his arms and in his bed. But after realizing Kylah willingly made the choice to leave him all those years ago, his heaven quickly turned to hell. Truths are revealed and tempers flare, leaving their happily ever after on the verge of ashes.
I create charmed worlds by writing stories involving passionate, strong-willed characters with something to discover. I started out writing romance but, along the way, realized I wanted to write stories about people. If there happened to be a romance, then it was meant to be. Otherwise, the stories I write are about self-discovery—who the characters are in the beginning and who they end up becoming.
In the pages of a book, you can be anything you want to be. Who would you become and why? :P
I was so looking forward to reading this book and I was not disappointed. Kylah's whole life has been a lie, she is not who she thought she was and even harder to grasp is why she would choose to start over without her soulmate. Aerric though a gorgeous guy was definitely not perfect and they both have to find a way to forgive each other and move on or they will have no future together. Another man throws his hat into the ring but fate may have something else in store for them all. I could not put this book down as so much was happening that I just kept turning the pages. Plenty of action and the romance was steamy yet sweet at times. Liam was the ultimate baddie, obsessive and cruel yet determined to possess Kylah at whatever the cost. So many twists and turns and I enjoyed reading about Kylah's journey of self-discovery though she wallowed in her guilt quite a bit so I just wanted to slap her at times. I am glad that she finally got it together when it counted and made the right choices in the end. Looking forward to the next book and finding more about her mother and Kylah's past.
Heart warming, tear jerking, wonderfully written story. You feel every emotion, while sitting on the edge of your seat as the scene unfolds not only in the book but in your mind as well. I highly recommended the book, it is a great read!!!
Redemption is the first book in the Prophecies of the Nine series by the author Brynn Myers (which I love!) and I finally took the time to write my review and my praise!
The prequel, Entasy, was a revelation for me; I knew right away that I would like this series after reading only a few chapters of it and naturally, Redemption didn't disappointed me! I was afraid I wouldn't like it as much as the prequel. I had several expectations: the story, Kyla's past and her relation with Aerric, the bad guys...
In Redemption we found Kyla and her family/friends where we left them in Entasy. Kyla's brother, Ty, seems to be lost to the Nine. Kyla knows almost everything about her real self and her link to the Nine and Aerric.
I must admit that the relationship between Aerric and Kyla seems less intense in Redemption because of Syd and many other plots. I enjoyed reading about this love triangle between Kyla, Aerric and Syd and the whole story, the whole package just add a lot on their shoulders. I liked this almost intimidating and frustrating aspect of the story, because at some point, I was hoping that the situation would change in Syd favor! But I think Ms. Myers has something planned for our stunning Syd in one of the next books!
I would have liked to read a little more on the evil of this story and especially when Kyla's was Liam prisoner. The rescue of Ty and especially the tribulation between Kyla and Aerric take enough space to almost forget the King of the Sluagh actions.
The story in general was fascinating, but the author managed to get my attention with the intrigue surrounding the fate of Kyla's mother. Almost every chapter had its momentum and its own small plot, which kept me captivated and dazzled.
The mythical appearance got me impressed. This is not just a love story reinvented, but a fascinating and unpredictable adventure that keeps you alert until end.
I can't stress enough how awed I am by this story and the detailed writing Brynn demonstrates in this book.
The story line continues seamlessly from Entasy, the prequel, and builds momentum as Kylah reclaims her previously forgotten life. The character development is fantastic, and their relationships had me laughing, crying, and cussing throughout.
However, the key point that earned five stars from me is the intricate world-building. The scenes are so finely described that I wanted to be transported and left to wander the labyrinth of The Nine for months, discovering the magic of this fantastic place.
Kudos to you, Brynn, this is a masterpiece in my eyes.
I devoured this book!! Before I start with the review I want to stress that if you haven't read this series you should start with the prequel to the series, Entasy. It was a beautiful way to set up the world and this series.
Redemption picks up 2 weeks after Entasy ends and our main character are now faced with the consequences for their actions. Kylah with her decisions from 200 years ago and Aerric with how he feels regarding her choices and not to mention the affection of another man towards his beloved. Kylah struggles with her destiny and massive guilt that she most over come to save the ones she loves. Even though Kylah has A LOT going on she is not a whiny female heroine which instantly has me loving her.
We are not lacking for characters to love in this series and hopefully Brynn has their stories coming to us in the very near future. As humorous as some of the characters are I know that the Nine are going to be facing battles that will test themselves and each other through out this series and I LOVE IT!!!
One thing that has me so obsessed with this series is all the Celtic lore running through it's pages. Redemption is fast paced, it slows down and focuses when needed and picks up when its expected to, which is always refreshing in a series.
Redemption is a throughly enjoyable read. The book follows Entasy's prequel into the intriguing world of The Nine. Building on Kylah and Aerric's history and long enduring love, we are drawn into Kylah's struggle to become the goddess warrior she was meant to be. All the while, keeping us on edge hoping Kylah, along with her fellow warriors, will win the war of good versus evil. There's love, sex, laughter and tears. The characters are well written. The worlds they live in are decribed in enough detail to almost feel one's own presence there. I am so looking forward to #2 in this series.
In the review I left for Entasy, prequel novella to Redemption, I said I would have like to see more conflict between Kylah and Aerric, well in Redemption you get conflict between the characters which brings more depth to the story line.
I have to be honest, in the version I have there were different sizes of font and wasn't consistent so it wasn't like internal thinking or anything to specify a conversation, letter, memory or anything else. It was highly distracting as well as annoying. I think I would have like the story more if there wasn't an issue with the font.
I think the story concept of Redemption is an excellent idea and I enjoyed the story.
Kylah getting her memory back, learning how to deal with past guilt, getting her bother's soul out of her and her thoughts, saving her family, learning to use her power and accepting help of others, fighting the bad guys and becoming the goddess she is supposed to be.
I enjoyed the conflict between Aerric and Kylah, struggle with finding love and dealing with everything that goes along with it always makes for an interesting story especially when you let people believe you are dead and having to deal with the betrayal and the other consequences that goes along with that decision.
I however didn't like Aerric. He seemed to place blame on others, he yelled at the love of his life and belittled her. That is not something you should do to your soul mate. Sure she made a decision that had to be made, his choice was to accept it and honor her or not and go out and do things that he would never have done if he knew the truth. Then he blames it on Kylah because she made the ultimate decision that caused his actions. No one can make choices for you, even if you are faced with being killed or kill someone else and save yourself, it is ultimately your decision not the person giving you the two options. And why would you do something that you wouldn't normally do, or are you using that as an excuse and that is your true nature and the one you are showing your love is the fake one?
I feel like Syd actually cares and loves Kylah and his actions shows that. He knew the person she wants to be, even though she doesn't want to admit it to herself or others that she was doing the right thing and was on the right path. He encourages her and teaches her and shows her that she can do whatever she puts her mind to. He is always there to pick her up and watches over her when she isn't able to do it herself. I feel like Syd is someone that deserves the love of a feisty woman like Kylah. I was disappointed that you find out that he was destined for another and he stopped his quest to get her to be his mate. I was hoping that Kylah would change her mind even after she was matted with Aerric. But maybe Syd will find someone more deserving of his love than Kylah.
So many elements that kept me glued to every page. Mystery, fantasy, romance, conflict and drama. The main character grown tremendously in the book - LOVE. What sent me over the top inlove with Brynn's world was the significance in every detail. I am also a sucker for villains and cliff hanger endings! Well done Brynn its not often a second book in the series can outdo it's debut, but this book did, and I was totally satisfied as to how it started and the magnificent ending!
- Please note there are adult scenes in this book -
Disclosure: Brynn and I are Goodreads friends and I received an ARC of this book from the publishers for an honest review.
Kylah is back where she belongs, in the Labyrinths of the Nine, but she’s still being hunted by sadistic creep Liam and needs to forgive herself for her past mistakes and learn to control her power to help stop the asshole once and for all.
I went into Redemption with high hopes after reading the prequel Entasy and finding Kylah an interesting and strong young woman in a very strange situation not often found in the kind of literature I read – Kylah is a Celtic goddess. I want to make it clear that I do not normally read this kind of book and to take any criticisms with a grain of salt.
Unfortunately after I found a few editing mistakes the book was pulled from the market for revisions. I continued to read the copy I had (not the updated version) so I will only say that the occasional tense confusion, improper use of commas and oddly placed dialogue tags annoyed me, however I have let the editing errors slide as they should be cleaned up for the newly revised version, whenever that is released.
Brynn Myers’s talent as a writer seems to lie in character relationships and giving a sense of place to the locations. While most of the book took place underground in the Labyrinth, I was never bored with the location that didn’t vary too much. I loved seeing all the other characters interact with each other. The plot and theme of the book was solid and interesting. I never wanted to skip past any scenes and had several favourite characters I enjoyed reading about very much, even if I did find it weird that the two male love interests shared many mannerisms (such as smacking Kylah’s backside).
The world building seemed pretty solid. Brynn has created a very complex and detailed back story that extends even beyond the prequel Entasy. I loved all the meetings and the business of the first half of the novel. It showed how busy the goddesses are kept trying to keep the bad guys from hurting innocence people, and why they created the Nine to begin with.
As for my critique, well here it is:
The overuse of the word ‘smirk’ really ‘irked’ me. Every few pages a character would smirk at another. I get that they’re gods and goddesses and could go around feeling as smug as all hell but by the end of the book I was thoroughly annoyed. A sexy smirk? Smirking is not sexy, it’s condescending. It implies scorn, smugness, and self-satisfaction. I would be reading a quite pleasant conversation and suddenly the whole tone would change because of all the smirking! It got on my nerves to the point where I declared the next character to do so would be the official character I hated the most. Sadly it ended up being Obsydian who I think is pretty awesome.
I was disappointed that the love triangle was resolved by the halfway mark because the goddesses told Syd to accept the fact that Kylah wasn't his. Now, I hated Aerric. I felt like he only wanted Kylah for her body and her sexytimes. He continuously said how much he loved making love to her or as he puts it, “I love the look on your face when I’m the one driving you mad with desire.”
Romantic, huh?
But he hardly ever said ‘I love you’. I felt their connection was only physical which disappointed me because I felt that Syd at least appreciated and respected Kylah and would never shout at her nor abandon her, especially after a domestic fight. I felt that Syd was in love with Kylah and wanted her to the point of fighting with Aerric but simply gave up as soon as the goddesses told him to. To be honest, by the wedding I was still hoping Syd would show up and declare his love for Kylah, especially because after Aerric shouted at her she thought that if he couldn’t forgive her then at least she could still fuck Syd. I ship those two hard. I can’t believe any of the Nine would think that out of control Aerric was a better match for Kylah than grounded Syd. Passion does not equal love.
And overall I felt that Kylah was given the luxury to wallow in her grief but didn’t reach a turning point to forgive herself. At the same time she was this useless out of control fire mage but after only one session with minimal coaching she mastered her fire. It left me wondering why, if it was so easy, didn’t she happen to control her powers before her memory was wiped two hundred years ago?
I'm not sure what the climax was supposed to be. The clumsy and confusing fight scene where Kylah killed a few henchmen and the bad guys got away but Aerric supposedly died except not because we'd been told over and over he'd just regenerate, therefore there seemed to be zero conflict or investment in the whole thing? Or maybe the wedding and the subsequent sexytimes, which really wasn't a big deal because Kylah and Aerric had already had sexytimes all over the pages of the book. I felt unsatisfied as there was no turning point, change, or character growth based on either of these possible climaxes. Kylah never really faced her demons or overcame anything. Liam’s big reveal was saved for the epilogue, which didn’t wrap anything up. In fact it left more questions and served as a final chapter cliffhanger rather than any kind of after word.
I feel that Brynn could have used the mentorship of someone more experienced to help smooth over the end of the book, solidify the climax, tighten and deepen the fight scenes, and make Aerric more likeable.
That being said, I am invested in Kylah’s story and would certainly consider reading the next book in the series to see the completion of this story arc.
An advance reader copy was kindly provided by the publisher.
Redemption is the first book of the Prophecies of the Nine series, after Entasy, the prequel.
I really enjoyed Entasy, with its Irish mythology references and the action and set up for the series so I was quite excited to read Redemption.
Each one of the books of the series will be about each one of the members of the Nine, the group of heroes fighting to defend not only their lives but also the human world from domination, and also progress the storyline of their fight to defeat Liam, their sworn enemy.
Redemption is Kylah and Aerric's story. Kylah just recovered her memory of who she really is and was, and also the memories of what made her with the help of her grandmothers decide to fake her death and erase her mind.
Once this is revealed she has to deal with her feelings, her memories and her guilt and also with the betrayal that Aerric feels since he was left broken thinking that his mate had died. Their relationship is in shambles and if we had Obsidian to the mix, that has feelings for Kylah and that while she was living her other life she also had feeling for him... it all becomes a bit of a big mess of a sort of love triangle.
Somehow I really couldn't connect too well with this book, I kept on putting it down and picking it up again a few days later, but I'm remiss to put the blame really on the book, given the emotional state I was while reading it... it really was not the right book for my emotional mess.
Once I managed to get into the book I felt the preparations for war and the showdown with Liam were mixed in a very odd way, not really giving enough focus to either... and once the action really started it all seemed to be over very soon.
I still plan to continue reading the series and I'm looking forward to reading about Viv and Tynan's story on Devotion.
“Redemption” is a good read. Now that Kylah know exactly who she is and what power she holds she needs to accept what it is she is meant to do if she wants to protect those she love. She’s now reunited with the love of her life Aerric who thought she was dead but Syd and Kylah has this chemistry they share. Syd has to realize that Aerric and Kylah are meant to be together, if they have any chance at destroying Liam and not let their battle for Kylah destroy the bond they all share. I found a few parts a little slow but I enjoyed the book overall. The secrets that are revealed in the book, especially at the end will have you saying oh shoot! The book ends in a cliff hanger but I look forward to seeing if the secrets revealed in the end were true or if they were just thrown out there to get Kylah to react differently. I loved all of the characters in the books and I’m excited to see where their paths, powers, and bonds lead them.
