Let me clarify that rating: 4 stars for Rabindranath Tagore’s novel, 2 stars for Sukhendu Ray’s translation. Why those ratings, I’ll explain towards the end of this review.
Set in the Calcutta of the late 19th century, Chokher Bali (‘The Mote in the Eye’) is about the dynamics in a small and prosperous family. Mahendra lives with his widowed mother Rajlakshmi (who is utterly devoted to him, a devotion returned in full by Mahendra), and her sister-in-law, Mahendra’s aunt Annapurna. Mahendra’s dear friend Bihari is considered almost a part of the family as well.
There’s a brief but abortive episode in which negotiations take place to get Mahendra—or Bihari—married to a certain Binodini. Neither of the men do marry her (all without ever having met the girl), and eventually arrangements are made for Bihari to marry the teenaged Asha. Bihari falls in love with Asha, but so does Mahendra—and he ends up marrying Asha. The married life of the young couple is blissful: they are so absorbed in each other that Rajlakshmi, suddenly bereft of her son’s adulation, finds herself neglected, furious, and at a loose end—and, on a visit to her village, returns from there with Binodini, since married and widowed, in tow.
Binodini’s arrival turns the household upside-down: her beauty, her education, her poise and grace, her capability when it comes to supervising the household or looking after an ailing Rajlakshmi… all are in sharp contrast to the abilities of the young and naïve Asha, and all quickly make her indispensable. Little does this family realize that Binodini, bitter and resentful at the way she was spurned, sight unseen, by both Mahendra and Bihari, wants her revenge. Her befriending of Asha is merely a means to get to Mahendra—and to seduce him. In the process, though, Binodini herself does not realize the havoc she will cause with not just Mahendra’s and Asha’s lives, but others as well—including her own.
Tagore’s deep understanding of human nature is what makes this novel so unforgettable. Each character is deftly etched, never black, never white, but shades of grey—and each character has a definite character arc: they do not remain always the same. When in love, they can be both desperately devoid of sense, and they can be nervous. They can shower someone with affection one moment, snap at them the next. Vow fidelity one morning, be unfaithful that night. Affection, honour, selflessness, jealousy, spite, selfishness… all are here, and more.
Most of all, Chokher Bali is a fine example of the phrase ‘the personal is political’, and not just in the feminist sense (though even that applies, considering Binodini’s plight is very much a part of the fact that, as a widow, she is discriminated against). It is a story of how each of our personal relationships has its own power equations at work: we love to control, even when it comes to those we love. Or especially when it comes to those we love.
If only the translation had been better. I have not read the original since I understand very little Bengali and read none, but when I come across patently incorrect sentences (“… she was merely testing water”, “… pulled his legs in good fun” and “…Don’t you ever notice anything? That is why everything is going to pots in this house”) it reduces the enjoyment of the story considerably. And these are only three examples of a lot of instances of errors.

Lovely, mercurial, precise, furious and infuriating—the very best books often seem to reduce me to the hopeless listing of adjectives. How does one characterize a book like Chokher Bali? This glimpse into family, pride, jealousy, lust, blindness, miscommunication, injustice, entitlement—what doesn’t a book encompass, when every page breaths with the possible and impossible?
Okay: so this is a 1903 Bengali novel about a marriage between a hopelessly entitled medical student and a child bride—and the brilliant, highly-educated young widow whose irrepressible desire to live fully sets their household aflame. It is a novel about an elite family in an incredibly misogynistic 19th-century society, written by an author who, like all authors—like all people—could only see the injustice of how his world was ordered up to a certain point, but who could see the humanity of the people trapped within that order in all of their fullness.
And so a never-ending string of misunderstandings, of fumblings in the dark, of groping efforts to love and survive. So moments of incredible power, like Binodini standing before Rajalakshmi, a fire blazing in her eyes, and declaring that they are both witches, unaware of their own power: “I cast my spell, part knowingly, part unbeknownst to myself. You, too, laid your trap part deliberately, part unconsciously. Such is the customary behaviour of our tribe, for we are witches.” And yet, to quote Binodini’s words at this moment is to convey almost nothing of their subtlety and power in the context of the story.
To read a book like this is to adapt to the norms and rules of an alien society, to consider them, to rail against them, to feel your imagination expand outwards, the depths of knowledge grow deeper, plumbing depths where sorrow and joy and recognition lurk like phantoms.
Tagore rather famously regretted the ending—to which I can only say, there are many things well worth regretting, in Chokher Bali as in life.
A note on translation: Radha Chakravarty’s translation is excellent, although—as is often the case with Tagore—one cannot avoid the sense of something irrevocably lost. Chakravarty chooses not to translate certain Bengali terms. I think this works well as a creative decision, but I could see it being frustrating for another reader. Sreejata Guha has also done a translation, published as A Grain of Sand; I’ve read her excellent translation of Tagore’s Home and the World, so I assume she would be an equally sound choice. Krishna Kripalani’s translation from the 50s was based on a Bengali edition from which certain passages had been excised. As with all of Tagore’s work, his nephew Surendranath Tagore’s early-20th-century translation is to be avoided at all costs.

Appropriate Title: LSD (Lust, Sex and Deception)
You think that’s a bit too much? Erm… maybe?
In a congested structure, the novel is nothing but a pulp-fiction on Bengali high-class society. So the basic premise of the story revolves around a young man who doesn’t want to get married because he feared that if he did, his love for his mother would be divided into two. Okay. Childish I know, but still, I get it that he is immature. Not an excuse, he’s in medical college.
So he rejects a girl, but then, when his best friend was about to get married, he gets infatuated with the would-be fiancé and turns against everyone to get married to her. Okay, I can digest up to this part (after all, with all the controversy in the world, infatuation is indeed one of the 7 stages of love). Or even later, when he ‘imprisons’ her whole day long, with an excuse of educating her. Most of the would-be non-virgins would do that if they got the chance.
But when the poor girl who didn’t want to get educated finally gets enough enthusiasm about learning her lessons, he begins to scold her that for her, education is now preferable over husband. Wow, dude.
And it doesn’t end here. Nope. Surprise surprise, to further increase the cringe quotient, enters the girl who was rejected by our protagonist at first, and who, after getting married to a good-for-nothing guy has become a widow. And when she comes into the scenario, our protagonist gets infatuated with her as well. And she falls for him too, though the obsession on her part comes with a revolting dose of jealousy and anger.
Nope, she isn’t a successful replica of Anna Karenina. Though I wish Tagore had blatantly copied from Tolstoy. This one time.
And the cycle goes on and on. A guy falls for a girl. A girl falls for a guy. A guy gets angry with himself for falling for a girl and leaves. The girl starts falling for the guy’s best friend and cries. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA STOP IT!!!!
Well, if I was a bit stricter, I would’ve rated it 1. But Tagore’s writing style is very engrossing. Though I felt I should deduct marks for that: I can tolerate a good story poorly written (if this was a problem there won’t be any new author anymore) and a bad story badly written (for I can leave it after just reading a page or so), but a well-written bad story is just a waste of time. You can neither leave it nor digest it without getting stomach bloating.
So you have understood by now what I have meant by Lust and Sex. Yeah, everyone has been there. But no mature people can confuse lust with love. This is not a romantic story in the least. But what it could’ve been, was a bold insight into the contemporary Bengal patriarchal society. And also about the prevalent toxic masculinity (you know, something like Raging Bull?). And herein comes the deception, (for me at least) because the story isn’t proclaimed as that one, but as one of the finest romantic tales in India. Romance, huh? My foot.
You don’t know what love is, Mahendra. Well, I don’t put the entire blame on you, though. Society is to blame. Even your mother is to blame. Even when you abandoned her without a single reason (nope I’m not starting on the mother-son sentiment, just a simple person-person emotional attachment) she put the entire blame on the underage, innocent girl though both of you know that she has done nothing. She could’ve done nothing.
But that doesn’t make you any less of an A-hole, though. Could’ve learned a bit more from your friends, eh? You’re just one arrogant, stupid, ungrateful piece of **** who may have been a role model for toxic masculinity. Instead of that, your behaviour is romanticized in the Bengali literary circles. Even now. And that’s what gets to my nerves.
I don’t know what made me read this one. I’ve been avoiding reading Rabindranath Tagore my entire life, and though the school syllabus has made me read a fair section, I didn’t complain at that time. Well, that was mandatory after all. But why on earth did I start again, and even if I started, why the hell with this one.
Thank god I didn’t watch the award-winning movie, though. The scenes I’ve seen from that, are more cringeworthy.
Though you can well understand my disgust, I think I will eventually read all of Tagore’s works again. Man, I love his poems and songs. But why he is so famed as a novelist, I’m yet to find out but I hope I will. One day.
But please, not a disgusting experience like this one again. Please.

I’m only one-sixteenth Bengali – my paternal grandmother is a quarter Bengali – but I’ve always felt a connection with Bengal. Whether through my grandmother’s excellent Bengali-style fish preparations, her Brahmo Samaji background, the wonder that is mishti doi, the year I spent in rural Bengal nearly 20 years ago where I managed to pick up enough Bengali to be able to watch ETV Bangla (I’ve forgotten most of it now) and Bengali literature, Bengal has always had a constant albeit hazy presence in my life.
I first read Tagore’s short stories which he wrote in English when I was eight and was drawn to their melancholic beauty. I later read Home and the World and while I enjoyed the story I thought the translation by Surendranath Tagore was lacking. Tagore translated in English has always had a stilted and archaic quality. That is until I came across Radha Chakravarthy’s excellent translation of Chokher Bali. It preserves Tagore’s lyricism, his sarcasm and cynicism, and stunning descriptions of Kolkata and the Bengali countryside.
I cannot fully express how much I enjoyed this novel. It felt so contemporary in so many ways. Binodini is confident, in control of her sexuality, and an intellectual who enjoys reading Bengali literature. Asha is quiet and shy but Tagore doesn’t shy away from character development. I also really liked how Tagore portrayed Mahendra and Bihari – even when I was frustrated with Mahendra’s naivety and sense of entitlement, I knew why he acted the way he did.
I also got an interesting insight into Brahmo society and thought (and a possible insight into the way some of my great great great grandparents lived and thought). I’d highly recommend this translation to anyone interested in exploring Tagore or to those who are familiar with Tagore but have read translations that have not done justice to Tagore and wish to remedy that.

আমার মনে হয় এ জীবনে বিনোদিনীর মতো বিভ্রান্ত আমাকে আর কেউ করতে পারেনি। সে আসলে কি চায়? চায় টা কি? এই যে ছেলেরা বলে বেড়ায় "মেয়েরা আসলে কি যে চায় তা তারা নিজেরাও জানেনা" ,সম্ভবত তারা সবাই একবার অন্তত জীবনে একজন করে বিনোদিনীর সাথে মোলাকাত করেছেন। আমি আসলে অনেক গুছিয়ে অনেক কিছু লিখতে চেয়েছিলাম কিন্তু বইটা পড়া শেষ করেছি ২০১৬ এর ডিসেম্বরে, ২০১৭ এর জানুয়ারিতে এসে মনের ভাব লিখতে গিয়ে দেখি সব এলোমেলো হয়ে গেছে। তবে আমি এটাও বুঝিনা রবি ঠাকুরের লেখা এটা আমার সবচেয়ে অপছন্দের উপন্যাস হওয়া সত্ত্বেও এ পর্যন্ত আমি তিন তিনবার এ বইটা পড়লাম কেন? সম্ভবত বিনোদিনীকে বুঝবার জন্যই।

মনস্তত্ত্বের কারবারি হিসেবে দস্তয়েভস্কির নাম জগৎ জোড়া। "চোখের বালি"তে রবিবাবু দস্তয়েভস্কির পথ অনুসরণ করে এমন অনবদ্য জটিলতা তৈরি করেছেন যে তা কোনো থ্রিলার উপন্যাসের চাইতে কম নয়।
ধনাঢ্য রাজলক্ষ্মী দেবীর একমাত্র ছেলে মহেন্দ্র। মহেন্দ্রর পিসী বিধবা অন্নপূর্ণা দেবীও তাদের সাথে থাকেন। অন্নপূর্ণাকে বড় বেশি পছন্দ করেন না রাজলক্ষ্মী দেবী। তবু মহিমের কারণে কিছু বলতেও পারেন না। কারণ অন্নপূর্ণা দেবী মহিমের বিশেষ প্রিয়জন। এই পরিবারে আরও একজন আছেন, যিনি রক্তের সম্পর্কে আবদ্ধ নন। অথচ পরিবারের অবিচ্ছেদ্য অঙ্গ, সে হলো মহিমের বন্ধু বিহারী।
মহেন্দ্রের মন চঞ্চল প্রকৃতির। কিছুতেই স্থির থাকে না। ছেলে বড়ো হয়েছে। তাকে বিবাহ দিতে ইচ্ছুক মাতা। কিন্তু পুত্র টিপিক্যাল আচরণ করে। অর্থাৎ সে বিয়ে করবে না। তখন অন্নপূর্ণা দেবী নিজের বোনঝি আশালতার বিয়ের প্রস্তাব করেন মহিমের সঙ্গে। রাজলক্ষ্মী দেবী এই প্রস্তাবকে সুনজরে দেখলেন না। তিনি ভাবলেন মাতা-পুত্রের দূরত্ব তৈরি করতে এ হলো অন্নপূর্ণার চাল। তাই বিয়েতে ভেটো দিলেন। তখন অন্নপূর্ণা দেবী মহিমের বন্ধু বিহারীর সঙ্গে আশালতার বিবাহ স্থির করলেন। উল্লেখ্য, অন্নপূর্ণা দেবী নিঃসন্তান। মহিমের চাইতে বিহারীর দিকেই তার স্নেহের পাল্লা বেশি ভারি বোধ হচ্ছিল।
আশালতা ও বিহারীর বিয়ে ঠিক হয়ে গেল। ঠিক তখনই মহিম বসলো বেঁকে। তার আশালতাকেই চাই। অগত্যা বাধ্য হয়ে বিহারীর বদলে মহিমের সঙ্গে কিশোরী আশার বিয়ে হয়ে গেল।
মেডিকেল পড়ুয়া মহিম ও নিতান্তই অক্ষরজ্ঞানহীন কিশোরী আশালতার বিবাহ-পরবর্তী যে রোমান্সের বিবরণ রবিবাবু দিয়েছেন তাতে এখনকার লেখকরা লজ্জা পাবেন। এমন সুচারু ও স্পষ্ট বর্ণনা দেওয়া নিঃসন্দেহে সাহসের পরিচয় ছিল। এদিকে অন্নপূর্ণা দেবীও কাশীবাসের সিদ্ধান্ত নিলেন। বিধবা অন্নপূর্ণা চলে গেলেন কাশী।
বিয়ের পর মেডিকেলের পড়া না পড়ে আশালতাকে জানার চেষ্টায় ব্যাপৃত হলো মহিম। সারাক্ষণ বউকে নিয়ে মাতামাতি করায় মায়ের সঙ্গে নৈকট্যের অভাব দেখা দিল। তখন রাজলক্ষ্মী দেবী বিহারীকে নিয়ে তার এক দূরসম্পর্কের বিধবা আত্মীয়ার গ্রামের বাড়িতে গেলেন৷ সেখানেই এক লক্ষ্মীমতী মেয়েকে দেখতে পেলেন। বিধবা তরুণী বিনোদিনী কয়েকদিনের মধ্যে রাজলক্ষ্মী দেবীর একান্ত আপনজন হয়ে উঠল। নিজের পুত্রের জন্য এমন একটি কন্যাকেই খুঁজছিলেন তিনি। তখন বিহারীর কাছে নিজের আফসোস প্রকাশ করলেন। বললেন তারা ঠকেছেন। বিহারী উত্তর দিয়েছিল,
" বিবাহ না করিয়া ঠকা ভালো। বিবাহ করিয়া ঠকিলেই মুশকিল। "
বিহারীর সঙ্গে মেয়েটির বিয়ে দেওয়ার একটি সিদ্ধান্ত তিনি নিয়ে ফেললেন। কলকাতায় ফেরার সময় বিনোদিনীকে নিজের সাথেই নিয়ে এলেন।
বিনোদনী অলরাউন্ডার। যে কারুর মন সহজেই জয় করে ফেলতে পারে। কিশোরী আশালতার সঙ্গে ভাব জমিয়ে ফেলতে দেরী হলো না। আশালতার এতো আদর এবং স্বামীর সোহাগ দেখে নিজেকে বঞ্চিত মানুষ হিসেবে চিহ্নিত করেছিল। কারণ আশালতার স্থানে সবকিছুর অধিকারী হওয়ার কথা ছিল বিনোদিনীর। অথচ হয়েছে তার উল্টো। বিনোদিনীর এই অন্তর জ্বালা সবাইকে জ্বালাবে, পাঠককে যন্ত্রণা দেবে সবচেয়ে বেশি!
কিশোরী আশার একমাত্র সখি বিনোদিনী। তাকে সে "চোখের বালি" নাম দিল। আশা তার চোখের বালির সুনাম সবসময় মহিমের কাছে করে। মহিম তখনও বিনোদিনীকে দেখেনি। তাই গ্রাম্য মেয়ে ভেবে তাকে নিয়ে একটি তাচ্ছিল্য ভাব তার মধ্যে দেখা যাচ্ছিল।
বউয়ের পীড়াপীড়িতে চোখের বালির সাথে পরিচয় হলো মহিমের। তারপর মহিম, আশা ও চোখের বালি বিনোদিনী বন্ধু হয়ে উঠল। আশা ও মহিমের তো চোখের বালিকে ছাড়া চলে না। এই দলটিতে একজন মানুষ ব্রাত্য হয়ে উঠল। সে বিহারী। আশার সাথে বিহারীর বিয়ে হওয়ার কথা ছিল। তাই আশা কখনো বিহারীকে সহজভাবে গ্রহণ করতে পারতো না। বিনোদিনীর আগমনের পর তিনজনের দলে মহিম বিহারীকে উপদ্রব হিসেবেই কল্পনা করতে শুরু করলো।
বিনোদিনীর সাথে বিহারীর বিয়ে হতে পারে। এমনটি বিনোদ ও বিহারী দু'জনেই জানত। বিহারী বিনোদের সাহচর্য কামনা করতো ও বিনোদও বিহারীকে মানুষ হিসেবে অপছন্দ করতো না।
বিনোদিনীর সাথে মহিমের বন্ধুত্বকে ভালো চোখে দেখছিল না বিহারী। সে আশালতাকে সাবধান করে দিতে চাইল। তাতে হিতে হলো বিপরীত। ততদিনে মহিম বিনোদিনীর প্রেমে হাবুডুবু খাচ্ছে। বিনোদ ছাড়া এক মুহূর্ত তার চলে না। যে আশার মাঝে এত গুণের সমাবেশ দেখতে পেত মহিম, সেই আশাকে চূড়ান্ত নির্গুণ জ্ঞান করতে শুরু করলো মহিম। তার চিন্তারাজ্যে রানী তখন বিনোদিনী। বিনোদকে কেড়ে নিতে পারে এমন যে কাউকে ঘোরতর শত্রু বিবেচনা করল মহিম। তাতে এক নম্বর দুশমন হলো তার প্রাণের বন্ধু বিহারী। সে আশার প্রতি দুর্বল - এই অভিযোগে তাকে বাড়িত প্রবেশ নিষিদ্ধ করলো মহিম।
বিনোদিনী এক আশ্চর্য রমণী। মহিম যখন পরোক্ষভাবে বিহারীকে অবজ্ঞা করতো, তখন বিহারীকে সাদরে এই একজনই গ্রহণ করতো, সে হলো বিনোদিনী।
মহিমের আচরণের কারণ বুঝতে পারার মতো পর্যবেক্ষণ শক্তি আশার ছিল না। নতুবা তার আদরের চোখের বালি যে সত্যিই নিজের সংসারের চোখের বালি হয়ে উঠছে তা উপলব্ধি করতে পারতো। সে উল্টো রাগ করে পতির দেখাশোনা ভার নিশ্চিতে চোখের বালিকে দিয়ে নিজের মাসী অন্নপূর্ণা দেবীর কাছে চলে গেল। একেই সম্ভবত বলে, শেয়ালের কাছে মুরগী বর্গা দেওয়া!
মহিম ঠিক এটাই চাইছিল। বিনোদ ও তার মিলনের বাধা বিহারী ও আশাকে আপাতত দূরে ঠেলে দেওয়া গেছে। এবার বিনোদকে সে নিজের মনের কথা খুলে বলবে, আপন করে পেতে চাইবে। যখন সে বিনোদিনীর কাছে যেতে চাইল, তখন প্রবল এক অলঙ্ঘনীয় প্রতিরোধের সম্মুখীন হলো। তখন মহিমের উক্তি,
" তুমি আমাকে ঘৃণা কর, বিনোদ! "
বিনোদিনীকে বোঝার মতো ক্ষমতা সাধারণ মানুষের পক্ষে সম্ভব নয়। সে কী চায় তা নিজেই জানে না। নতুবা যে মহিম তার জন্যে নিজের বন্ধুকে ত্যাগ করলো, স্ত্রীকে দূরে সরিয়ে দিল, সে-ই মহিমকে কেন বিনোদিনী তখনো ভালোবাসল না।
মূলত, কাহিনি এখানে থেকেই শুরু। একদিকে মহিম বিনোদকে পাওয়ার জন্যে পৃথিবীর সবকিছু করতে পারে। সবকিছু মানে সবকিছু। অন্যদিকে, বিনোদিনী মহিমকে আদতে ভালোবাসে না! তবে কী সে বিহারীকে ভালোবাসে? কিন্তু বিহারী তো তাকে গ্রহণ করতে রাজি হবে না। আশালতার কী হবে? মোটকথা, এমন প্যাঁচে পাঠকের অবস্থা হবে সামনে এগুতে মন চাইবে না আবার কী হয় তা জানার জন্য মনের আকুলি বিকুলির কোনো ওষুধ নেই। কেননা বিনোদিনী বলেছিল,
" বাহিরের ঘটনা শুনিয়া তুমি ভিতরের কথা কিছুই বুঝিতে পারিবে না। "
" নারীর মন, সে তো শত সহস্র বছরের সাধনার ধন" - এই সুভাষিত একেবারে মোক্ষম মনে হয়। বিনোদিনীকে রক্তমাংসের মানবীর চাইতে কিছু কম মনে হচ্ছিল না। তাকে ঘৃণা করতে পারছিলাম না, তার নিষ্ঠুরতা সইতেও পারছিলাম না। অদ্ভুত এক দ্বান্দ্বিক অবস্থা!
ধনাঢ্য রাজলক্ষ্মী দেবীর একমাত্র ছেলে মহেন্দ্র। মহেন্দ্রর পিসী বিধবা অন্নপূর্ণা দেবীও তাদের সাথে থাকেন। অন্নপূর্ণাকে বড় বেশি পছন্দ করেন না রাজলক্ষ্মী দেবী। তবু মহিমের কারণে কিছু বলতেও পারেন না। কারণ অন্নপূর্ণা দেবী মহিমের বিশেষ প্রিয়জন। এই পরিবারে আরও একজন আছেন, যিনি রক্তের সম্পর্কে আবদ্ধ নন। অথচ পরিবারের অবিচ্ছেদ্য অঙ্গ, সে হলো মহিমের বন্ধু বিহারী।

আচ্ছা,যদি মহেন্দ্র জননীর কথামতো বিনোদিনী কে বিয়ে করতো,তাহলে আশালতা কে হয়তো বিহারীর ই বিয়ে করতে হতো,অথবা হতো না,আশা হয়তো দৃশ্যপটের বাহিরেই থেকে যেতো।তাহলে উপন্যাস হতো না।
যদি বিহারী রাজলক্ষীর কথায় রাজী হয়ে বিনোদিনী কে বিবাহ করতে যেতো তাহলে হয়তো গল্পের মাল্টিপল এন্ডিং থাকতে পারতো,আবার না ও থাকতে পারতো।যাই হোক এসব কিছুই হয়নি,হয়েছে যা হবার ছিল,তাই হয়েছে!
চোখের বালি পড়ার আগে অনেকের কাছে শুনেছি বিনোদিনী হচ্ছে খল চরিত্র।আসলেই কি তাই?! বিনোদিনী কি ভিলেন? কেন?অল্পবয়সে বিধবা হওয়া,শিক্ষিত,সুন্দরী,কর্তব্যপরায়ণ হওয়া সত্ত্বেও প্রত্যাখ্যাত হওয়া,কলকাতায় এসে যে ঘরের বউ তার হওয়ার কথা ছিলো সেখানে আশার মতো সংসার সম্বন্ধে নিতান্ত আনাড়ি এবং অশিক্ষিত একটা মেয়েকে দেখে তার প্রতি হিংসা হওয়া এই ঘটনাগুলো কি খুব অস্বাভাবিক?!বিনোদিনী কি একটু কনফিউসড ছিলো?আমার তো মনে হয়না!মহেন্দ্রর সাথে তার সম্পর্কের মধ্যে শুরু থেকেই একটা দূরত্ব ছিলো।সে তার সীমানা জানতো,যেরূপে সে বিহারীর কাছে নিজেকে সমর্পন করেছিলো এবং বিহারীর প্রস্তাব প্রত্যাখান করেছিলো,অন্তত ওই ঘটনায় তাকে তাই মনে হয়েছে।সে তার সীমানা অতিক্রম করতে পারতো না বলেই মহেন্দ্রর কাছে সে আত্নসমর্পন করতে পারেনি,পারেনি বিহারীর বিয়ের প্রস্তাবকে লুফে নিতে।
মহেন্দ্রকে কিছুটা কনফিউসড মনে হয়েছে।শ্রেষ্ঠত্বের প্রতিযোগীতায় সে কখনোই জয়ী হতে পারেনি।সে আশাকে ভালোবেসেছে,বিনোদিনী কেও।কিন্তু বিনোদিনী অধরা রয়ে যাবার কারণেই হয়তো টান টা সে বিনোদিনীর জন্যই অনুভব করেছিলো।ছোট বাচ্চারা যেমন নিজের অসংখ্য খেলনা থাকা সত্ত্বেও যেটা না পায় সেটার জন্য জিদ করে,মহেন্দ্রর অবস্থাও হয়েছিলো তাই।বারবার বিনোদিনীর কাছ থেকে প্রত্যাখ্যাত হবার পরও সে বিনোদিনীর কাছে আত্নসমর্পন করেছে।সে দূর্বল পুরুষ চরিত্র।
আশালতা কে সবারই পছন্দ।তার দোষ হলো তার বয়স কম ছিলো এবং জগতের কঠিন বাস্তবতাগুলো সে অনেক সরল চোখে দেখেছিলো।তার ভুল সে বিনোদিনী আপন ভেবেছিলো,তার ভুল সে মহেন্দ্রকে বিশ্বাস করছিলো,বিশ্বাস যে নড়বড়ে হতে পারে তা সে ভেবে দেখেনি।
বিহারী, যদি গল্পের একজন নায়ক থাকতেই হয় তবে আমার কাছে বিহারী ই সেই নায়ক।গুরুজনদের প্রতি ভক্তি,বোঠানদের প্রতি শ্রদ্ধা,বন্ধুর প্রতি,মানুষের প্রতি তার যে ভালোবাসা এবং কর্তব্য তা তাকে একজন আদর্শ মানুষ হিসেবে প্রমাণ করে।সে নিভর্রতার প্রতীক,সে নিজে জ্বলে অন্যকে জ্বালিয়ে রাখে।বিনোদিনীর প্রতি ভালোবাসা তাকে পুড়িয়েছে ঠিকই কিন্ত মহেন্দ্রর মতো পুড়ে সে ছাই হয়ে যায়নি।
আর বিহারীর কারণেই "চোখের বালি'র" সমাপ্তিটা এতো সুন্দর।আর মাঝের ঘটনাগুলো এই সমাজেরই অতীত,বর্তমান ও ভবিষ্যতের গল্প।সবকিছু মিলিয়ে "চোখের বালি" ভালো লেগেছে তাতে কোনই সন্দেহ নেই।
যদি বিহারী রাজলক্ষীর কথায় রাজী হয়ে বিনোদিনী কে বিবাহ করতে যেতো তাহলে হয়তো গল্পের মাল্টিপল এন্ডিং থাকতে পারতো,আবার না ও থাকতে পারতো।যাই হোক এসব কিছুই হয়নি,হয়েছে যা হবার ছিল,তাই হয়েছে!
চোখের বালি পড়ার আগে অনেকের কাছে শুনেছি বিনোদিনী হচ্ছে খল চরিত্র।আসলেই কি তাই?! বিনোদিনী কি ভিলেন? কেন?অল্পবয়সে বিধবা হওয়া,শিক্ষিত,সুন্দরী,কর্তব্যপরায়ণ হওয়া সত্ত্বেও প্রত্যাখ্যাত হওয়া,কলকাতায় এসে যে ঘরের বউ তার হওয়ার কথা ছিলো সেখানে আশার মতো সংসার সম্বন্ধে নিতান্ত আনাড়ি এবং অশিক্ষিত একটা মেয়েকে দেখে তার প্রতি হিংসা হওয়া এই ঘটনাগুলো কি খুব অস্বাভাবিক?!বিনোদিনী কি একটু কনফিউসড ছিলো?আমার তো মনে হয়না!মহেন্দ্রর সাথে তার সম্পর্কের মধ্যে শুরু থেকেই একটা দূরত্ব ছিলো।সে তার সীমানা জানতো,যেরূপে সে বিহারীর কাছে নিজেকে সমর্পন করেছিলো এবং বিহারীর প্রস্তাব প্রত্যাখান করেছিলো,অন্তত ওই ঘটনায় তাকে তাই মনে হয়েছে।সে তার সীমানা অতিক্রম করতে পারতো না বলেই মহেন্দ্রর কাছে সে আত্নসমর্পন করতে পারেনি,পারেনি বিহারীর বিয়ের প্রস্তাবকে লুফে নিতে।
মহেন্দ্রকে কিছুটা কনফিউসড মনে হয়েছে।শ্রেষ্ঠত্বের প্রতিযোগীতায় সে কখনোই জয়ী হতে পারেনি।সে আশাকে ভালোবেসেছে,বিনোদিনী কেও।কিন্তু বিনোদিনী অধরা রয়ে যাবার কারণেই হয়তো টান টা সে বিনোদিনীর জন্যই অনুভব করেছিলো।ছোট বাচ্চারা যেমন নিজের অসংখ্য খেলনা থাকা সত্ত্বেও যেটা না পায় সেটার জন্য জিদ করে,মহেন্দ্রর অবস্থাও হয়েছিলো তাই।বারবার বিনোদিনীর কাছ থেকে প্রত্যাখ্যাত হবার পরও সে বিনোদিনীর কাছে আত্নসমর্পন করেছে।সে দূর্বল পুরুষ চরিত্র।
আশালতা কে সবারই পছন্দ।তার দোষ হলো তার বয়স কম ছিলো এবং জগতের কঠিন বাস্তবতাগুলো সে অনেক সরল চোখে দেখেছিলো।তার ভুল সে বিনোদিনী আপন ভেবেছিলো,তার ভুল সে মহেন্দ্রকে বিশ্বাস করছিলো,বিশ্বাস যে নড়বড়ে হতে পারে তা সে ভেবে দেখেনি।

গাধা+আত্মঅহংকারী মহীন, কনফিউজড বিনোদিনী (সে যে কী চায়! নিজেও জানে না) পুত্রস্নেহে আন্ধা রাজলক্ষ্মী, বেক্কল আশা ব্যাস ঘুটাঘাটে হয়ে গেল চোখের বালি। বিহারিকে ঠিক কি বিশেষণে বিশেষায়িত করব এখনও ঠিক বুঝতেসি না। বিনোদিনীর মত আমিও কনফিউজড।
স্কুলে থাকতে পড়েছিলাম ভাব নেয়ার জন্য। তখন অতো শতো বুঝি নাই, বিরক্তিই লেগেছিল। ইদানিং মুভিটা দেখলাম, বইটাও পড়লাম।ভাল্লাগসে! রবী ঠাকুর লিখে গেছেন একখান! মনস্তাত্ত্বিক বিশ্লেষণ করতে করতে চুল পেকে যাবে বিশ্লেষকদের।

Didn't know it's the same book as "Binodini" by the author but with a better, different translation. The characters are really frustrating. The plot is frustrating. It's just not my read.

Tagore's novel on lust, jealousy, entangled fate and sacrifices, Chokher Bali takes us into the heart of a Bengali household. When Mahin decides to marry the meek and gentle Ashalata, his relationship with everyone else including his best friend Bihari suffers a strain. But Mahin, engrossed in his newfound marital bliss doesn't notice these changes. As Binodini, a young widow enters the house (as a guest), she overstays her welcome and forms a very strong friendship with Asha. Asha's aloofness brings Binodini close to Mahin and this widow who has seen innumerable hardships in life starts dreaming about a life full of love and happiness with a true and loving companion.
A complex character study that at times runs parallel to the societal norms, while sometimes defying the traditional diktats, 'Chokher Bali' gives us a lot to think about. Binodini's lust for Mahin, her intrusions in Asha's marriage and her need for control and attention at all times can be attributed to the life of seclusion she has been leading as a widow. Her character peels off in layers, finally revealing a girl who is kind and caring, who dreams of a better life and still has the innocence of her childhood self intact.
Mahin, on the other hand, emerges as an egoistic and self-centered man you would come to despise. His sudden bursts of emotions and is unreliable nature distances him from everyone in his life but he is too engrossed in himself to notice. His friendship with Bihari, a mature and loving soul disintegrates throughout the story. Ashalata's change from a dreamy girl to a responsible adult takes a lot of time, but when it does, it helps bring some order in their chaotic life. Subsequently, their relationship with Rajalakshmi (Mahin's mother) also faces a crisis, with each of them abandoning her except Binodini.
Tagore's portrayal of each of there characters is distinct. They are meant to stay with you and through the story, they morph into someone new and different with every passing moment. Each character has a distinct character arch, and they all stand in a grey zone making it difficult to categorize them as good or bad. The author also captures emotions in the truest and raw form. Mahin's immense love for Asha, Asha's need to look up to Binodini for comfort and guidance, Binodini's confrontation with her sexuality, Bihari's constant dilemma while being around spontaneous characters, etc. are few instances where emotions are brought to life, and we find ourselves resonating with the character's thought process.
The translation by Radha Chakravarty is precise and clear. Certain Bengali words are kept intact in the final translation to give us an idea of the culture and relationships as we see in Bengal. While I found the narration to be at a pace that was faster than I expected (a sudden shift in scene, most of the times), I found myself immersed and enjoying the story at all times.
Just like Tagore, I wish this story had a different and a more empowering and feminist ending, I have to make peace with the given plot keeping in mind that the society then was not as tolerant as it is now.

This book was totally out of my comfort zone. I never read books like these but I read this only because I hadn’t read anything by this author. The story was beautiful and the ending tragic. The ending could have been better I feel (After watching the movie, I got to know that Tagore himself did not like the ending). The characters were pretty complex and not one dimensional except Behari who did seem like an epitome of goodness. Also the fact that this was written in 1905 or so, it felt a bit dated at times. The writing felt choppy and bombastic sometimes. I guess the beauty of the writing was lost in translation. I wish I could read the original. Still, loved it and will try more stories from this author in future. There is a new Netflix series called “Stories by Ravindranath Tagore” which I am now eager to watch.
Finished watched the 2003 movie adaptation with Aishwarya Rai and loved it. The movie was extremely well done and brought tears in my eyes. It was very difficult for young widows in those days. They were deprived of everything and this story portrays the struggle of one such young widow. The movie was very loosely based upon the book and lot of scenes from the book were missing but still it was good. The ending was exactly same as the one in the book. I hoped that they would give a happy ending but they did not change it.

“How to act irrationally in every relationship” - a primer by Rabindranath Tagore. I last read Tagore some 20 years ago with his ‘Gora.’ Age hasn’t increased my liking for Tagore, it seems.
I struggled through this magnum opus for five days. I got up with a headache today thinking of the book and that’s when I realized I really need to finish this. I am the sort of person who is very grumpy if I have a book that doesn’t agree with me. Note that this doesn’t mean ‘Chokher Bali’ is a bad book. It just didn’t agree with me.
There was a time when my friend and I watched ‘Crouching Tiger and The Hidden Dragon’ in China many years ago. At the end, we both looked at each other in bewilderment and asked, "Just what was the point of it?” This was a bit like that. Everyone goes through so much trouble and in the end, I was like: Why? Why?
The character I feel the most for? Asha. Tagore makes her the ever-suffering wife who gladly has to forgive her husband’s philandering with an ardent glance of love. And her husband? Irritated me so much that he might even displace the only one other guy who has irritated me the last three years. That guy is a piece of work, I thought, one to be framed in the Hall of Misogynist Fame. But in Mahendra, Tagore comes close to matching that paragon of virtue.
I need to go unclench my teeth. Excuse me.

चोखेर बालि गुरुदेव की सर्वश्रेस्ट उपन्यासों में से एक है। यह मूलतः बंगला भाषा में लिखा गया है जो 1902 में प्रकाशित हुआ था। इसका हिंदी अनुवाद 'आँख की किरकरी' नाम से किया गया है जिसके अनुवादक 'हंसकुमार तिवारी' है और जिससे साहित्य अकादमी, दिल्ली ने प्रकाशित किया है। चुकी बंगला भाषा को पढ़ पाने और समझ पाने की असमर्थता के कारण मैं सहज ही इससे अब तक वंचित रही।
चोखेर बालि एक बाल विधवा विनोदिनी की कहानी है की किस तरह उसे समाज के आडम्बरो को सहेजे एक सदा जीवन जीने पे मजबूर कर दिया जाता है। विनोदिनी समाज के खिलाफ जाने में समर्थ नही है इसलिए वह भी नियति को कुबूल कर लेती है। लेकिन अगर मन पे किसी का बस होता तो यहाँ कभी कोई प्रेम कहानी लिखी नही जा सकती थी।
आगे क्या हुआ होगा उसकी ज़िन्दगी में ये आप खुद ही विनोदिनी से पूछ लीजिये, मुझे यकी है वह आपको अपनी कहानी सुनाने के लिए उतनी ही उत्सुक होगी जितने उत्साह से उसने मुझे सुनाई।

One does not pass verdicts on the works of someone like Rabindranath Tagore and if one has to, then the rating cannot be anything less than a 5/5. Chokher Bali is such a complicated story of love, lust and longing. I finished it in less than 2 days - I wanted to take time to absorb each development but it is so fast and compelling that I could not put it down. Tagore was truly a Master. The level of thinking he had at the end of 19th century is more advanced than authors of the present millennium. I am just so glad that I got to read this book.

My father wanted me to learn Bengali in order to read this book and another book named 'Pather Panchali'. But I opted to read the English translation instead (took the high road) .
This year i had decided to give up on books. Linus asked me what was wrong and told me that I had always read books and that I was making a mistake. He said to read books when I can find time. Bisu said that I had read books in all phases of my life and I simply must not turn my back now. So I listened to them like the understanding person I am 😉. Thank you guys.
"As a flower plucked from a tree gradually droops and shrivels, love that avoids the harsh realities of practical life cannot thrive on its own resources.”
I loved this book. I had fallen in love with Tagore's writing ever since I first read his short story 'The postmaster'. This book too is well written, with an insight to the souls of every characters depicted. I loved it when Tagore made me love then hate and then again love Binodini in this book. Quite the wizard in story telling. Tagore has also managed to brandish his poetic skills in the books which left me smiling at the choice of words.
I hated Mahehdra. I felt that he was a spoilt brat who only looked down on people and only saw what people had to offer him. He is a cunning fox who wants the whole world to revolve around him without a care for who might be hurt. Contrary to him, is the ever sacrificing Behari whom I hated a bit for just simply giving up everything for the very people who took advantage of him. It really was annoying to see him act like Laxman to an undeserving Ram.
Now for the women. First of all I hated how women were treated in those times (now too I guess). They had no individuality. Their lives needed to be validated by men and they allowed themselves be pawns in a man's whim for gratification. As I mentioned, my feelings for Binodini were of love/hate while that for Asha was of pity, anger and then respect when she evolved into a person who realized what she was meant to be. Rajlaxmi and Annapurna were every sister in law of a typical Indian household.
A tale of family, love, loss and moving on. Chokher Bali is a tale of sisterhood, friendship, a love that consumes and burns one and others in it's path, it's a tale of people who have the endurance to go through it all and build bridges in that fire. It about people who think beyond the moment and bring peace.

Loved the book, but I'm just not sure if the translation did justice to the text. Never ever did I harbour a bigger regret of not knowing a language. I wish I could read it in Bengali, nonetheless, the book had me captivated.

22 year old Mahendra marries the orphaned Ashalata who is around 12-14 years old (specific age not mentioned in the story). Asha is shy, immature and doesn't know how to run a household, which is understandable as she is only a child. Though an arranged marriage, Mahendra and Asha dote on each other. Mahendra's mother, Rajlakshmi, though reprimands Asha for her lack of household skills. After many a happy romantic days, in enters the beautiful young widow Binodini, a companion of Rajlakshmi. Mahendra had rejected Binodini for an arranged marriage proposal earlier as he was not ready for marriage at that time. Rajlakshmi and Binodini get close and the former wishes that her son had married a mature Binodini instead of an inept Asha. Binodini soon gets jealous of the loving couple and makes Mahendra to fall in love with her. This causes a maelstrom in the household and affects everyone including Mahendra's childhood friend Behari and his widowed aunt Annapurna. That's what the story is about and also the events preceding the ruckus and how they solve the problems in the end.
Reading Chokher Bali was like watching an Indian TV serial. The writing was excellent but at times I got a bit tired of reading the constant troubles and anguish of the characters. I was hoping they would think sensibly and find a solution sooner rather than later to the problems ravaging them. But the troubles dragged on for a major part of the story. Nevertheless I was immersed in the story. I was quite miffed with the haughty mother Rajlakshmi, the idiotic and proud Mahendra and the temptress Binodini playing games with other people's lives. I felt sympathetic towards poor Asha, the wise and sensible Behari and the pious and virtuous Annapurna.

স্টেটমেন্ট দিতে হাত কাঁপতো না তাঁর। কী পুরুষ কী নারী, এমন করে সবটুকু বুঝে নিয়ে সেইসব বোঝাপড়া কলমে পুড়ে এত বলিষ্ঠ হাতে যদি লিখতেই না পারতেন তবে আর রবীন্দ্রনাথ কেন! আমি শুধু দু' একটা কথা ভেবেই অবাক হচ্ছি! এই মহিন অথবা বিনোদিনী, এই বিহারী, আর এই রাজলক্ষ্মী এরা তো শ'খানেক বছর আগের চরিত্র! অথচ এমন আধুনিক যুগে এসেও আমি এদের ঘুরেফিরে দেখেছি! কত কত মহিন যে ঘুরে বেড়ায় সমাজে!
মানুষগুলির বলার ধরণ পালটে গেছে, অথচ বলার বিষয়বস্তু পালটায় নি! জগত-সংসার চিরকাল ধরে তার মোহ, তার ছল, তার মায়া বিস্তীর্ণ করে এসেছে, কখনো শৃঙ্খলা দিয়ে বেঁধে পরক্ষণেই সেই সুতো কেটে চরম বিশৃঙ্খলায় ফেলে দিয়ে ঘুরিয়ে ফিরিয়ে ইতিহাসে এনে হাজির করেছে সব রকমের উদাহরণ। আমরা সেসব পড়ি, বুঝি, হাসি এবং এক ই রকমের ভুল হাজার বার করে নিজেরাও এই হাস্যকর ইতিহাসের অংশ হই!

শেষ পর্যন্ত, সমাপ্ত হল “চোখের বালি”। কি জানি! এ কোনো সম্পূর্ণ সম্পর্কের প্রকাশ নাকি এক এক দিকের জানালা খোলার প্রয়াস মাত্র।
🍁 বিহারী-মহেন্দ্র- চুনি- বিনোদিনি এই চার চরিত্রই কি প্রধান? না, সবাই মুখ্য, সবাই প্রধান। কিন্ত সম্পূর্ণ প্রাধান্য দেওয়া উচিত হয়তো বিহারী এর দিকে - সুখে,দুঃখে, সহায় সম্বল এ যে সবার পাশে ছিল সে নিজের প্রয়োজনে তাদের পাশে পায়না। আবার মহেন্দ্র যে সবার ভালোবাসাকে সহজ বলে চিরকাল ভেবে এসেছে - সে শেষকালে সবাইকে কাছে পাওয়ার জন্য উত্তাল হয়ে ওঠে। 🍁
প্রশ্ন এও জাগে, আশার কি এত অপদস্থ হওয়ার প্রশ্ন ছিল? বিনোদ এর কি নিজের আত্মাকে প্রশ্ন করা উচিত হয়নি? রাজলক্ষী যদি নিজের করে নিত আশা কে তাহলে কি শেষে সব কিছু সুখের হত? হয়তো দুঃখ সম্পূর্ণ তার নিজের হত না। শেষ পর্যায়ে সব কিছুই “যদি” এর পর্যায়ে অন্তর্নিহিত।
মানুষ মানুষ কে বোঝে কিন্ত সমাজ তাকে নিজের মত করে বোঝার প্রয়াস করে দেয় না। কিন্তু বিনোদ নিজের মনের শুনে ধ্বংসলীলায় জগত জাগিয়ে শেষকালে নিজের পবিত্রতা তুলে ধরে। আশা সমাজের কালো চরিত্রতে নিজের স্বামীর মিথ্যা ঢাক গ্রহণ করে নিজের মনের সিংহাসনে মহেন্দ্রকে আবার স্থান দেয়। কিন্তু সেই নববধূ রূপে হয়তো নয়, এক নব চরিত্রে। বিহারী একাকীত্ব উপভোগ করে আর এই বিশ্বে সব কিছু নিজের আসল এবং পূর্বের অবস্থানে ফিরে আসে।
যদি সত্যি এমন সহজ হত সব কিছু মানিয়ে নেওয়া তাহলে হয়তো জীবনটাই একটা গ্রন্থ হত 🌻

রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুরের চোখের বালি বাংলা সাহিত্যে এক অনবদ্য সৃষ্টি। মহেন্দ্র আশাকে বিয়ে করে খুবই সুখী, কিন্তু রাজলক্ষী তার ছেলে মাহেন্দ্রার বিয়ের পর, নিজেকে এক পায়ে। গ্রাম থেকে ফেরার বেলায় ঘরে নিয়ে আসে বিনোদিনীকে। বিনোদিনীর আসাতে সংসারে এক অদ্ভুত ওলোট পালট শুরু হয়। বিনোদিনী তার রূপগুনে সবাই কে মুগ্ধ করে, কিন্তু বিনোদিনীর মনে আজও এক গোপন অন্ধকার বাস করে, মহেন্দ্র এবং তার বন্ধু বিহারি যে তাকে একদিন ফিরিয়ে দিয়েছিলো...

মানবীয় ভুল ই মহেন্দ্রকে প্রধান চরিত্রে আসীন করছে, আর বিহারীকে ( সকল নায়কোচিত গুণ থাকার পরও) করেছে পার্শ্ব চরিত্র।

It gets two stars from me primarily because i was reading a translation. The language of the translator, I felt, was too simplistic and stilted in places. The lyrical beauty which is so integral a part of Tagore's prose was missing. As a result, the characters of Mahendra, Binodini, Behari and Asha seemed wooden and the situations contrived.
Unfortunately, while I can read Bengali, since it is not my mother tongue, it would take me ages to finish the book in the language and I am too impatient. My loss totally.
I actually love Tagore - I have read his translated short stories by William Radice, who did a lovely job in retaining the essence of the master and the Hindi translation of my favourite, the famous Kabuliwala, way back in school.
So, it is a shame that I could not enjoy what is probably a brilliantly written saga about the tangled webs that we weave, driven by our desperate desires, wants and sheer stubbornness. In this book we have Binodini, a beautiful young widow who very subtly but surely wrecks havoc in Mahendra and Asha's married life, simply because she felt petulant about why a child like Asha enjoys such complete devotion from her husband. When she finally manages to entrance Mahendra, she realizes the extent of her folly because she does not really want him. She just wants to feel wanted, a feeling she has not known because of the early death of her husband. Instead she falls in love with the simple, honest and upright Behari, Mahendra's childhood friend, who everyone ignores and takes for granted, until Mahendra reveals himself for the immature child in man's body that he is.
The book I think is likely to be mindblowing in its original avatar but that is literally lost in translation.

চোখের বালি, পড়ে মনে প্রশ্ন জাগবে বা আসতে পারে কে কার চোখের বালি!!
মনঃস্তাত্ত্বিক উপন্যাস, তাই উপন্যাসের চরিত্র, বিষয়বস্তু আলোচনা করতে গেলে মাথার চুল একটাও কাঁচা থাকবে না।☺️
চোখার বালি নামকরণ কেন??
মূলত মহেন্দ্র, বিহারী,আশালতা, বিনোদিনী,অন্নপূর্ণা, রাজলক্ষী এরা কেন্দ্রীয় চরিত্র। উপন্যাসের শুরুতে দেখা যায়,বিহারী,মহেন্দ্র খুব ভালো বন্ধু কিন্তু সময়ের সাথে সাথে তাদের দূরত্ব সৃষ্টি হয়।আশালতা আর বিনোদিনী সই থাকলেও একসময় বিনোদিনী- মহেন্দ্রর ভিতরে সম্পর্ক সৃষ্টি হলে, আশা আর বিনোদিনীর সম্পর্ক নষ্ট হয়।দুজন জা,রাজলক্ষ্মী আর অন্নপূর্ণা।তারা বিধবা হয়ে একসাথে থাকতো,সংসারের বিভিন্ন জিনিস নিয়ে তাদের মধ্যে মনমালিন্য হয় একসময় অন্নপূর্ণা কাশি চলে যান।
তাহলে দেখা যাচ্ছে যে,চরিত্র গুলো সময়ের সাথে সাথে একে অপরের চোখের বালিতে পরিণত হয়ছে।তাই উপন্যাসের নাম যথাযথ।
চরিত্রগুলোর বিশ্লেষণ..
মহেন্দ্র-মাথা মোটা,কিংকর্তব্যবিমুঢ় একজন মানুষ। তার মা বিনোদিনীর সাথে তার বিয়ের কথা বলে কিন্তু সে না করে।জেঠিমার কথায় আশালতা কে বিয়ে করে প্রেমে হাবুডুবু খাচ্ছিল কিন্তু সুন্দরী বিধবা বিনোদিনী কে দেখে মাথা ঘুরে যায়।
তার কোন নিজস্বতা নাই,শেষে অবশ্য আশার আঁচলে আশ্রয় নেয়।
আশালতা-
বাংলার সাধারণ মেয়ে,স্বামী বলতে অজ্ঞান। এই আশালতা হলো সেই ধরনের মেয়ে যারা সুখে থাকার জন্য জন্মায় কারণ তাদের বুদ্ধি কম।
বিনোদিনী -সুন্দরী,শিক্ষিত ললনা যার মূল্যায়ন কেউ করে নি।খুব অল্প বয়সে বিধবা তারপরে এর ওর সংসারে ঠোকর খাওয়া। বিনোদিনীরা কখনো সুখী হয় না কারণ তারা বুদ্ধিমতি বলে।
বিনোদিনী, মহেন কে কখনো ভালোবাসে নি,বরং নাচিয়েছে। তার মন তো শুধু বিহারি কে চেয়েছিল কিন্তু বিনোদিনীরা চির দুঃখী তাই বিহারিরা তাদের হয় না।
বিহারি -খুব জটিল চরিত্র।আমি বরং তাকে বলির পাঁঠা বলবো।
সব মিলে জটিল এক উপন্যাস, চরিত্রগুলো ছিল বেশ জটিল। মনে মনে যে লড়াই তা এত সুন্দর করে ররবীন্দ্রনাথ তুলে ধরেছেন এই উপন্যাসে তাই যতই প্রশংসা করি তার গুণের কাছে কম।

কাহিনীর পরিণতি কাল্পনিক অনেকটাই। মানে এরকমটা গল্পেই সম্ভব। আশাকে লেখক এত বেশি নিরীহ করে গড়ে তুলেছেন যে আমারই রাগ হচ্ছিল। তবে হ্যাঁ বিনোদিনীকে আমার যতই অপছন্দ হোক, তার স্পষ্টবাদিতা আমাকে অবাক করেছে। রাজলক্ষ্মীকে face করার সময়ও তার যে দৃঢ়তা ছিল, কিয়দংশে সেটা প্রশংসনীয়ই বলবো আমি। মহেন্দ্র ও বিনোদিনীর সমাজবিরুদ্ধ প্রেমের জন্য আমি কাউকে একাধারে দোষী করছি না।
বিহারীর চরিত্র আগাগোড়া ভালো লেগেছে। সে মানুষের কর্ম এবং আদর্শ অনুসারে শ্রদ্ধা করতে জানে, হোক সে আশা(যার প্রতি তার দুর্বলতা ছিল এবং বন্ধুপত্নী), হোক সে বিনোদিনী(যার কার্যে তার ঘৃণা ছিল, বন্ধুপ্রেমিকা)। কিছু কিছু সংলাপ খুবই catchy ছিল। এছাড়া কাহিনী খুব চমকপ্রদ কিছু না।

পুরো বইটিতে মানব মনের এমন সুচারু বিশ্লেষণ দেখে অভিভূত হয়েছি। আরও অবাক হয়েছি এটা ভেবে যে মানুষ এতদিন 'বিনোদিনী' চরিত্রটাকে খল চরিত্র বলতেছিলো কেন? (হয়তো তারা বই না পড়ে মুভি দেখে এমন সিদ্ধান্তে উপনীত হয়েছে) উপন্যাসটি একটু অভিনিবেশ নিয়ে পড়লে দেখা যায় মহেন্দ্র-আশার জীবনের দুঃখময় লজ্জাজনক অধ্যায়টির জন্য বিনোদিনীর ভূমিকা তত মুখ্য নয়। মহেন্দ্রর অনিয়ন্ত্রিত ভাবাবেগ ও 'আমীত্ববাদ'ই বহুলাংশে দায়ী। বিনোদিনীর চিরকাল নিয়ম-নীতিকে তুচ্ছজ্ঞান করে চলা এই অন্য অনন্য রূপ আর বিহারীর সাথে তার অসমাপ্ত প্রণয়েই যেন উপন্যাসটির সাহিত্য-রস সার্থক হয়েছে।
