Being diagnosed with celiac disease, wheat allergy or gluten sensitivity and facing an overhaul to your eating habits, can seem like a death knell to enjoying your favorite foods. There’s no need to despair or feel overwhelmed. John Chatham decodes the mystery of eating gluten free in his book, “Gluten Free Lifestyle”. His informative, and easy-to-read, book discusses the medical reasons for going gluten free, lists the foods to avoid and the ones to enjoy, offers sample menus, and 66 delicious recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert. He provides the sound advice, the tools to take to the grocery store, and the comfort that you will still be able to have your health, and your cake, too.
The Gluten Free Lifestyle does more than lay out an easy to follow gluten-free diet. It helps the reader understand the way gluten works and those of us with gluten allergies handle it. It alerts readers to the “hidden gluten” used in the processing of food and present in household items like soap and glue. Finally, it helps the reader “gluten proof” their diet and plan gluten free meals at home and eating out while still accommodating non-gluten free friends and family members.
The recipes are what make this book stand out from similar dieting books. Gluten Free Lifestyle not only tells you what foods you can’t have, it gives you healthy and delicious alternatives. As someone who enjoys cooking, I appreciated the gluten to non-gluten flour substitution guide and the recipes within satisfied me and my non-gluten free family. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert are all accounted for; everything from fruit filled breakfast crepes to chicken stir fry to gluten free carrot cake.
One of the biggest challenges of living a gluten free lifestyle is finding and sticking to a diet that is convenient and cost effective while still allowing for good food. The Gluten Free Lifestyle accomplishes this and more while still satisfying your inner gourmet
I have to say that with the little time I find I can devote to reading, my hopes are to finish a text and leave feeling seriously informed (at the very least), and this text walks that walk. I had no idea how little I knew about gluten and its effect on my health, and why that’s not a good thing. I was also unaware of the problems that could arise such as depression, frequent respiratory infections, delayed puberty, and memory and concentration issues for those needing to pay attention to their gluten intake...knowledge is power. Chatham does a great job addressing all of these issues. He also does a great job responding to those issues by going into depth on Celiac disease, a list of foods both allowed and not allowed, an extensive resource section, a ton of recipes, a craving replacement section (cool idea), and a checkpoint on how to watch for gluten products literally anywhere, including non-food products – once again, who knew? It seems like the gluten-free diet represents a bit of a learning curve, but looks to be well worth the time. No problem recommending this.
If you need to start a gluten free diet for any reason I recommend you read this book! John Chatham gives you a crash course in living gluten free in a concise, easy to understand manner. He explains what gluten is and how it works in our bodies and demystifies medical reasons why one may have problems with gluten. This diet/cookbook has shopping guides, chapters on substitutions, "Allowed-Not Allowed" foods that make it easy to know what you need as you navigate the grocery store. 66 easy recipes make this an ideal guide for anyone, on any budget, to transition to a gluten free lifestyle in a healthy way. Highly recommended!
In The Gluten Free Diet John Chatham first and foremost defers to medical diagnosis before any individual moves towards a gluten free diet and lifestyle. There is no room for error here as the author expounds on Celiac Disease, Wheat Allergy and Gluten Sensitivity. The book’s Allowed and Not allowed food lists, recipe section and upfront acknowledgement of the importance of commitment, planning and good old fashion “stick to it” mentality is a strong foundation to build upon for a gluten free lifestyle.
Living without gluten doesn't have to be as daunting as it sounds. After reading this book, I feel like I have a better understanding of all the unexpected sources of gluten as well as some really yummy-sounding recipes like gluten-free French toast, spinach quiche, and tuna-stuffed avocado. No matter what your situation—have tons of time to bake, hate to cook, have kids with wheat allergies, keep a tight budget—there are tips, recipes, and resources to make going gluten-free easier.
It has taken me years to name “gluten” as the cause for why I feel so lousy after I eat my dinner. And only recently, and with the help of Chatham’s book, have I been able to understand why. The most challenging aspect has been learning how to adopt a gluten-free lifestyle. This book has been such an aid in learning that approach. I strongly recommend this book for anyone who is going through what I have been going through.
Would recommend this book. gives areas where gluten is hidden and so many other helpful hints and ideas and places to eat. very informative book. I have it on my kindle with many bookmarks pages. Will refer back to this book many times I am sure.
