Award-winning author Elle James grew up as an air force military brat. She received her work ethic from her rock-solid father, her creative streak from her artistic mother and inspiration from her writing partner and sister, Delilah Devlin. As a former member of the army reserves and a current member of the air force reserves, she's traveled across the United States and to Germany, managed a full-time job, and raised three wonderful children. She and her husband have even tried their hands at ranching exotic birds (ostriches, emus and rheas) in the Texas hill country. Ask her, and she'll tell you what it's like to go toe-to-toe with an angry three-hundred-and-fifty-pound bird and live to tell about it!

Her adventures in the army and air force reserves, and the wild antics of her life on a small ranch in Texas give her fodder for mystery, suspense and humor in her writing. Elle writes gothic, paranormal mystery for the Harlequin Intrigue line and paranormal romantic comedy for Dorchester Publishing. A former manager of computer programming and project management professionals, Elle is happy she now has the opportunity to pursue her writing full time.

I loved this book, and will add it to my read again list of books!
Pierce, and Roxanne broke off their engagement. Roxanne had blamed Pierce for the death of her brother. Her brother, and Pierce were in the FBI together. Someone started targeting Roxanne, and Pierce was by her side. The two worked together to find out who was behind all the attacks, While they also worked on the ranch. The two couldn’t stand each other at first, but the more time they spent together, they realized what they had been really special. In this book, bullets flew, there were fires and a lot more. It was one of the best action, suspense, and romance books I’ve read in awhile!

Sample from chapter 10
No matter how hard she leaned on the latch, it wasn’t going anywhere. Roxanne abandoned that exit and raced for the small side door. Again it wouldn’t open, the lock jammed. Smoke was filling the interior of the barn. Sheba kicked the inside of her stall, her frightened cries echoing against the old oak timbers. Roxanne ran her fingers along the wall beside the door and flipped the light switch. Nothing happened. Panic spiked as Roxanne realized this was no accident. Someone had started the fire on purpose - and beforehand, they’d deliberately locked her in. She raced back to the larger barn doors and pounded her hands against it. “Help! Someone help us!”

Is forgiveness possible

Roxy and Pierce are living in torture, unable to forgive themselves or each other, but the danger that is targeting Roxy rips them from their despair and reminds them of what is important....each other.
They end up bruised, battered and with a few stitches, but their love can heal that...they just need to stay alive. The enemy is a little too close to home in this book and it leaves all the Thunder Horse brothers reeling at just how close the danger has crept.

Very good book. Pierce is back on his family's ranch for his brother's wedding when he finds Roxy being attacked. Roxy had called off their engagement two months earlier after holding him responsible for her brother's death. She doesn't want him anywhere near her, but he's not about to leave her unprotected. I really liked both Pierce and Roxy. Pierce is very good at his job, but holds himself to very high standards. When a raid went bad two months earlier, killing several agents, he felt he should have known it was a trap. His sense of responsibility added to Roxy's grief and she ended their engagement. But Pierce still loves her and refuses to leave her without protection. He also finds that the more they are thrown together the more he wants to try to get her back. Roxy's grief and fury caused her to pull away from Pierce. Now she doesn't want him near her - mostly because the attraction is still there and so is the love. She doesn't want to depend on him but she's feeling overwhelmed by the attacks and the other ranch troubles. I really liked the way that, by the end of the book, she started to see that she hadn't been fair to him. The suspense was good with some very tense moments at the end.

I’m writing this review to explain the poor rating as I bought this book because of the high ratings. I read this book as a standalone and I think you have to read previous books to establish relationships and provide context. Having said that the main female character consistently behaves in a way which jeopardises herself and those she is responsible for - which in itself can be a good plot point - but it’s not only inconsistent but actually stupid. And therefore difficult for the reader to engage . As for the male characters : this has to be the poorest showing of FBI procedures and investigation techniques I’ve ever read. ‘Oh yes, please use our helicopter because you have a bad feeling about this’ - Really? I read to the end because I felt there had to be something redeeming, there were some nice descriptive pieces about the badlands and sub characters.

Roxanne is so stubborn. When her brother died, she broke off her engagement with Pierce. She blamed him for her brother's death. Pierce has not quit loving her and when danger comes to her, he is there to help. Whether Roxanne likes it or not. Roxanne is trying to run a ranch, that may be taken by the bank if she doesn't get some money soon, and someone is sabotaging things on the ranch. Who is doing all this? She has no idea why someone would be targeting her. Peirce is going to stick close until he finds out who it is. He also wants a life with Roxanne, but since he is in the FBI, he doesn't think that he could be a good husband to her, so it is good that she called off the engagement. Or is it? Is there a chance for a life together? Will they live long enough to have a life together?

The story was fast paced and interesting and definitely keeps you guessing. Loved the characters and the setting although why someone would hide a gun cache on the property of an FBI agents fiancee does push the bounds of credulity. I enjoyed the family dynamics and the fact that the heroine was feisty and always ready to make her own decisions. Head strong and stubborn is definitely the flavour of the day but being set on a ranch I was thinking more along the lines of cattle rustling than terrorism as to why someone wants to keep people out of the canyon and how would the thieves even know that there were caves on the property?
An enjoyable read as long as you dont think too much about the practicalities.

Enthralling!!

I have read several books by this author, most of them in the Brotherhood Protection series. But this one had me hooked and reined in from page one. Intriguing, enjoyable and very entertaining, this wonderful novel had everything that makes for a great story. Suspense, non stop action, cowboy heroes and an intriguing plot that kept me glued to my kindle until the last word. A fearless warrior and a stubborn cowgirl made for quite the story of love, forgiveness and understanding. I am very much looking for more books in this series.

Roxanne and Pierce

She called their marriage. Roxanne blamed Pierce for her brother's death. Because he told her it was his fault.
While riding Pierce hears a shot then sees a ,rider being chased by a motor bike. It's Roxanne! As more things happen history FBI training and protective instinct click in. Along the way they find each otherwise again
Very good story Very well told with characters you grow to love

Thunder Horse Redemption

This book was full of action and danger. It had Roxanne running in every direction to stay safe. Pierce was trying not to just protect her but the way he had to corral his feelings for her made it entertaining.

The main reason I read this was because I needed a book set in North Dakota (it also helped that the author's name begins with an "E"). I didn't really have great expectations of this book, but it was worse than I thought it would be. The hero and heroine have a history together, but none of that is explored, so I really didn't feel a connection between them and often wondered what he saw in her. The heroine, in my opinion, is an idiot: she's stubborn to the point of being arrogant, blames the hero for events that happened, and never examines her own behavior. In one scene, she thinks to herself that she forgives the hero and is going to help him forgive himself - there's no mention that she needs forgiveness from him. The plot of this book was very predictable. I knew who the bad guy was within seconds, and why s/he was the bad guy. There was no suspense or mystery at all. The author did not take the time to really describe the environment. All we are told is that it is flat with no trees. I don't like a ton of description of places, but I do like being able to picture the environment. The writing itself was just fine, and the concept of the book was good, but the lack of details and the awful heroine made this book only OK for me.

This is the first Elle James book I've read. I really enjoyed it. Roxanne is a hard-working, stubborn, determined, compassionate woman with a failing ranch. Pierce Thunder Horse is an honorable, hard-headed, conflicted man. He takes responsibility for his actions and the results - sometimes including things that he is not actually responsible for. Both Pierce and Roxanne blame him for the death of Roxanne's brother in an explosion, which broke them apart. When Roxanne's life is threatened and it becomes obvious the danger will not cease until the perpetrator is caught, Pierce makes it his mission to protect her, whether she likes it or not. Now both parties are forced to confront feelings they thought they had buried.

I enjoyed this romantic suspense, it was a wonderful blend of romance and mystery.

Pierce and Roxanne have a recent history that is heartbreaking enough without wondering about the strange happenings at her ranch. Roxy's brother was killed while on duty and Pierce blames himself for his death. Roxanne feeling the need to lash out because of her pain breaks off their engagement.

Both hurting from the recent break, they must work together to find out why someone is trying to hurt Roxanne.

I have not read the others in this series however did not have any problems enjoying the characters of the Thunder Horse family.

In James’ romantic suspense novel, Roxanne Carmichael was accustomed to the rugged North Dakota badlands. Struggling to keep her ranch working, she faces a setback when a stranger starts shooting at her. Facing threats from every angle, she faces another when ex-fiancé FBI agent Pierce Thunder Horse steps in to help her.

Old wounds are opened as the estranged couple is thrown together unexpectedly. To keep Roxanne safe, Pierce is willing to put his pain on hold to keep her alive.

Fast-paced, action-packed, hard to put down story.

Roxanne broke of her engagement with Pierce after her brother dies during an FBI raid. Roxanne blames Pierce for getting her brother to join the FBI and eventually for his death. Pierce blames himself for his death thinking that he should have realized that something could go wrong with the raid even though he could have had no reason to believe that. Than bad things start happening to Roxanne and her ranch and Pierce comes back into her life and she eventually realizes that she still has feelings for him and shouldn't blame him for things that he had no control over

Roxanne Carmichael misses her brother, killed in an FBI raid. She's also worried she'll lose her ranch if she can't get her cattle to market. To make matters worse, someone is trying to kill her.

When her ex-fiance, Pierce Thunder Horse, finds out, he has to protect her and find the killer. But Roxanne doesn't trust him. And he still blames himself for her brother's death.

When on "accident" after another occurs, Roxanne's certain she's going to lose everything. Can Pierce find out who's behind it all--before Roxy dies or will he again--like when her brother was killed--be too late?

I thought this book was fantastic but I couldn`t understand why she would still like trust Ethan after they had determined that he was the most suspicious out of all the suspects and it was a really big surprise when it turned out that sheriff shorty Duncan was one of the bad people. when they went out to rescue Roxanne they used a helicopter but they could`ve probably been faster on horse because they knew it better on hooves so overall this book was amazing even though their thoughts were weirdish and confusing.

FBI agent Pierce Thunder Horse finds his ex girlfriend being shot at on the ND Badlands. He rescues her. His protective instincts kick in and even though he knows she doesn't love him (she broke their engagement a couple of months ago), he still loves her. Who is after Roxy? His whole family joins in to find the answer.

Started this one last year but now, wanted to read it to complete the series with Dante's story. Didn't get why they broke up since they obviously cared for each other until pretty far into the book but then at least his reasons made sense. Cleared the way for the final story.
