Does Eugene have all the answers about the Zombies? Can Rock and Abraham work together without killing each other? What's up with Maggie? Can Dale convince Andrea to leave Rick & Abraham's group? Andrea, Dale, Rick, Michonne, Maggie, Glenn and the kids hook up with Abraham and Rosita following Eugene's plan.

A tough time for all has they have to come to terms with their losses, as well as the uncomfortable truths that Eugene reveals. The handling of each character's reactions to the world as it becomes more and more dehumanised is a wonderful read; other writers of dystopia should take note! 9 out 12, another firm Four Stars.

On the move, facing dangers!

This is the eleventh volume of The Walking Dead, collecting the comic book issue from #103 to #108.

My general rating is an average result of the sum of the ratings of each chapter in the collected edition.

Creative Team:

Writer: Robert Kirkman

Illustrators: Charlie Adlard

Additional gray tones to inking: Cliff Rathburn

Chapter Ten

WHAT WE BECOME

You’re some brilliant scientist – working for the government – and you wear a mullet?

Rick’s group have a clear destination, but one thing is to know where to head to, and another is being able to reach there.

And if you think that a bunch of zombies were dangerous, just wait for a dang herd!

Zillions of zombies!!!

You better start running!!!

Do you remember good old Morgan from the first chapter and also starring a Christmas Special?

Well, his Christmas became a living ( or more accurate) a dead Halloween, a walking dead Halloween. And with nothing to lose, and...

...he will be part of Rick’s group.

And as I told you before, zombies are easy to understand, people not so much, and in this dystopian crazy world,...

...kids are no longer really kids anymore.

This was all very introspective, Rick and Abraham spilling the beans to each other and realising just how similar they are. In order to survive they’ve both become monsters; they know it too, and they’re at war with themselves. They know what they’ve become and they hate the necessity of it. It’s a simple case of kill or be killed. This famous line seems more appropriate than ever:

description

Rick also turned a new corner. We all know that he is brutal and strong, but that act was something else. It just goes to show how much of his humanity he is willing to sacrifice to keep him and his son alive. Honestly though, there wasn’t a great deal else he could have done other than lay down and die. He saw an opening, the only opening, and he took it. Well, bit it would be more appropriate!

So the story is progressing, and it’s going in a great direction. All the characters are well written, and the ones that are becoming stale are clearly going to be droped soon. I’m looking forward to catching up with the television show events, and seeing Negan on the page!

Eugene siempre será uno de los personajes que menos me gustan tanto en el cómic como en la serie. Me cae súper mal.

Abraham almost killed a character that I like a lot. Hope he never does this again.

I hope Michonne doesn't stop trying to convince Rick that he wasn't fault at the death of his wife. He should stop second-guessing himself. I agree.

Michonne slashing heads like her life depends on it. I wish there would be more characters in this series who fight with a sword. Although it makes her really unique.

These crazy characters really have it with bitting other character's skin off to defeat them. But do I like it? Absolutely.

I can never not be overwhelmed by Abraham's backstory as to how he lost his family. It's just too messed up. Just noticed now that both Rick and Abraham feel guilt for what happened to their family. Well, seems like the two who initially couldn't stand eachother have something in common. What an interesting opportunity to start a friendship.

Oh no, the priest is coming in the next volume. I hate that character.

Interesting volume. Especially from a psychological standpoint.

It starts with Rick still struggling with his sanity.

description

Which Kirkman then follows up with quite a shocker. That made my heart stop there for a moment. Then we went on a road trip, which lead to Rick, Carl and Abraham taking a detour to Rick’s hometown. That trip had another very intense moment in store, before Rick and Abraham then got down to talk. Which was my personal highlight of this volume.

description

I said in my review of the last volume that I find Abraham pretty cool. But I started hating him early on in this one, before I then went back to somehow liking him again in the end. It was quite the rollercoaster of emotions. But I’m certainly having a better understanding of the character now. The main thing I took away from this volume, I guess, is that everything can happen. Absolutely everything. And the ending already hinted at yet another conflict that might raise its ugly head somewhere down the line.

This has been a buddy-read with Cathy. We ran out of volumes that are on Kindle Unlimited now. So what are we going to do with this one? I can see why this is such a long-lived series. It simply is really good. But that also makes it quite the investment. Well, I guess we're going to continue with this one at some point.

Another great entry in the series, just like the previous volume with a slower pace and Rick still effected by the events at the prison.

The series still continues to surprise me, I was shocked by Maggie’s actions.
This leads to a confrontation between Rick and Abraham, the tension between them two was so gripping and I liked how it was resolved.

Yet again their some truly gruesome images and it’s not just the zombies, there’s a particular attempted rape of a child here.

The reintroduction of Morgan has certainly added a new dynamic to the group.
This series is so addictive!

So some interesting things happened in this volume.

First, you see that Rick and Abraham are either going to absolutely hate each other and probably kill each other, or they are going to both go mad holding hands and be best friends. Hot and cold with these two. Their personalities are both dominating ones, so they aren't getting along all that well.

You also get to learn a little more about Abraham's past and why he is the way he is. Like what happened to his family; which, as it is expected, is really stinkin' sad.

The third thing is that the group finally gets to deal with a legendary herd they kept hearing about from Abraham. And I am talking like two thousand little roamers. Like that's insane. How have they not come across a herd yet is really the question.

The twins are up to something not good... well, nothing yet... but you know it is coming.. because they are doing creepy things that are letting me know they aren't mentally stable.

*she says as she uses a GIF that will let readers know what she is talking about without actually revealing it.*

Thing five and six are things I can not actually talk about because it's too sensitive. Like seriously, you shouldn't be reading this series unless you are like in your twenties.

05. Maggie did something that I will never completely forgive her for.

06. The thing that almost happened that involved Carl. Like absolutely cannot deal.

I can't talk about that anymore without getting either blazing mad or blubbery sad.

But on a good yet sad note, we introduced Morgan again! He has seen some things and he is not the same person anymore, but he is going to add some new dynamics to the characters I am sure.

Ah well, it had to happen – after the excitement of the Governor storyline and the new direction of the series in the last book, Volume 10 of The Walking Dead sees the plot slowing down, almost as if they’re taking stock of everything that’s happened, and it’s a bit of a snoozer. It also weirdly feels like a throwback volume to the kind we got pre-Governor, ie. the bad old days.

Rick and the handful of survivors from the original group, including his son Carl, have joined some new characters led by Abraham, a former US Military serviceman, as they take a scientist, who knows what caused the zombie apocalypse, to Washington, D.C., to uh... fix/explain things? Oh, I cannot wait to see that! Bunch of guys in lab coats sat round, laughing uncomfortably in between blasts from their inhalers. “Yeah, haha, oooooooooh, that whole zombie apocalypse… thing? That was a whacky day in the office! My bad. SOS! Pretty cool to see though, right? I mean, who knew we’d all be living in a George Romero movie if someone dropped that beaker of green liquid! Wait, what’re you doing with that baseball bat…!”.

Rick realises they’re near his old hometown so he and Carl, along with Abraham, go on a gun-gathering mission to Rick’s old police station lockup, while the others sit tight for their return. That’s the plot of this volume - pretty basic, right?

Kirkman uses this book to draw parallels with the first volume and show how much Rick’s changed in the year since he woke up in the abandoned hospital, while also touching base with how the first person Rick met when he left the hospital, Morgan, has fared.

The obviousness of the subtitle – What We Become – and the way that plays into Rick’s behaviour when they encounter a group of child-raping hillbillies who want to take Carl, is borderline comical. This is Kirkman once again attempting to be thoughtful and deep and totally flubbing it – it’s like that “WE are The Walking Dead!” line Rick said; Rick, once again, realising how much he’s changed is kind of obvious to everyone – come on, give the readers some credit, we get that he’s changed and it’s fairly clear to him too, so why spend a whole book on it?

Abraham’s life story is predictably, almost hilariously, bleak because this series is so unrelentingly miserable, as is Morgan’s – hey, it’s The Walking Dead, nobody is allowed to have it easy! – but mostly this book felt like Kirkman replaying moments from earlier in the series. The angsty internal politics of the group flare up again with the new members, they hunt for more firearms again, and there’s even another attempted suicide!

And, like with the earlier attempted suicide, it has the opposite effect, at least to me, coming out of the blue like it did and made me laugh. It’s one of the seasoned characters so it seemed odd that they’d choose now to try to off themselves, even with the new information from Rick. It just felt like they’d moved on and had some semblance of happiness in their new life, and Kirkman threw that in so Abraham’d have a moment of doubt in what he’d been doing up ‘til then. Just felt contrived, s’all.

Maybe Kirkman’s making a point about the repetitive nature of this new world where strangers getting thrown together without knowing each other will always raise matters of trust and create tension in a group, and that gun/ammo runs have become a daily occurrence in the characters’ lives, but it’s still not very interesting for the audience to read.

That’s not to say this book isn’t fun because that whole sequence where Rick, Carl and Abraham get caught up in a zombie herd was great, and I like the uncertainty that mentally unbalanced Morgan brings to the group – methinks he’s not long for this series! But there’s a lot of what feels like filler in this book when I’d have preferred for the group to have hit the trail to DC hard instead.

So Volume 10’s an average addition to the series as a whole but hopefully, going forward, the series will put its compelling plot to better use and once more build up momentum.

Yikers. New people are always unpredictable, and I totally understand being wary, but this volume definitely shows how those you think you know can be just as unpredictable and terrifying. The scene with the cat... yeah. It's just half a page and only a handful of words... but that's such a powerful image illustrating how depraved the situation has made people become. Hence the volume title, right?

I loved Rick in this volume. He grows back a bit of the backbone he had lost when Carl is threatened, and in doing so gains back some initiative and purpose. I will say that Dale is getting on my nerves though. Always the one least willing to lead has something negative to say about those who try, and I think it's pretty damn shitty to put all the blame for danger on one person, especially when safety in general is so rare in the world these people are living in. I hope he gets a wakeup call soon.

Awesome volume. It's insane to think that these comics have a crazy high standard and they keep that standard up with every volume. It's such a good comic. It's not just about zombies and killing them. It's really about the people. The psychological effects of living in a zombie apocalypse, losing everyone and everything you love, trying to survive and the things you have to do in order to survive. I just love the psychology, morality and philosophy behind it all. I really think things are getting so interesting with Carl and Rick. I just love this series!

A lot of people seem to no like this volume as much, but I would have to strongly disagree. This is one of my favorites so far. This is a strong character development volume and I really enjoyed it. We got to learn a lot more about Abraham and his back story with how his family died, and him and Rick have an important discussion about what it means to survive and what's right and wrong when it comes to killing people. I love how this started with a flashback of Rick and Carl before the apocalypse started and how even then Rick felt like he couldn't keep him safe. Rick is having hallucinations and thinking he's talking to Lori out of guilt. I actually really like the addition of Abraham and his group. Their characters are interesting.

SPOILERS BELOW
So Maggie tried to hang herself and that was really sad and unexpected. Abraham nearly killed her when he thought she was dead, but thank god he didn't. I love that a HUGE iconic moment in the show finally happened in this volume! I'd been waiting for it. The scene where Carl nearly gets raped and Rick bites into that guys neck. It was amazing and happened almost exactly like it did in the tv show which made me so happy. Then Abraham and Rick have this amazing heart to heart and discover they aren't so different after all. Then, we finally see Morgan! Which is another exciting thing. his son is a zombie that he has yet to kill, and he seems to be a little crazy. While they are leaving Morgan's neighborhood they come across a giant 2,000+ herd of zombies and it's crazy! They jump out of the car and run into this house and find things to distract the zombies with, and then they're gone. It was so intense. With all this shit going on I don't know why everyone is saying this is boring and slow now. It's action packed! I don't know why Dale doesn't trust Rick all of a sudden and it's really annoying. I have this gut feeling that Dale is going to die soon.

Bullet Review:

Add to the pile of disturbing imagery and plot lines "attempted child rape" and "death by drill bits". Abraham is, by far, the most likeable character (though, please, that Sally Sob Story is just over-the-top); Rick a raging hypocrite. I feel like points of this were pointless, such as the trek for weapons (but they lost the truck) and an annoying character's attempted suicide (but don't worry, it only takes 2.5 seconds of offscreen thinking to make things ALL BETTER).

Still mildly interested in where they go from here as we *gasp* get answers about how this THING happened.

What we become after every accident or event happened in our life !! we all change some strong enough to stay the same and some just can't :(
World like these changes everyone , that's what i love about the walking dead and Robert Kirkman amazing author really , it not about just zombies and surviving , everyone turns and everyone has his story and what he\she already lost :(
very good volume <3 , ya i still miss that Daryl not in the comics but we have Abraham and he is so look like Daryl in the show very strong and brave

-Maggie still damaged after loses her entire family and trying to suicide but thank god Glenn saved her
- rick does what it takes to save his son even if it mean kill the whole world <3 a little crazy but no one can blame him he killing crazy sadist psycho guys so yea :D
- Morgan still alive but i guess he been a little bit crazy , dale start to be weird and i will not mention the psycho Ben or billy i don't remember one of twins anyway and his craziness about killing cats , i guess we will find in the next volume xD

5 stars!

This was intense! With the introduction of Abraham, Rosita, and Eugene, I have grown to appreciate their personalities and characteristics. Rick and Abraham's bonding moment (I guess you could call it that) was heartwarming, and I understood Abraham's character more from the comics than I did from the series.

That scene when Rick...😩😳 As gruesome as it is, I'm glad they kept it in.

And finding Morgan was a great way to end this particular comic book (not including the herd)!

I was willing to overlook this in the last book, because the prison catastrophe was new, but WHY hasn't Rick gone back to find Lori & baby Judith and put them out of their zombie misery the way he did with Shane? This bothers me. Yea, the prison is completely over run, but still.

Theme of not being what you once were: Duane & his son, the twins(!), and the conversation Rick & Abraham have after the attack on Carl. Yep, a zombie apocalypse has a way of changing things.

Rick and Abraham bond over the horrible things they have done in order to survive. It seems as if Rick is getting his mojo back.

Morgan joins the group and he is not in good shape. Meanwhile, Dale is becoming increasingly angry with Rick, blaming him for all kinds of things that really can't be laid on one person.

Even though the world has been like this for over a year, it seems like some people just still can't accept the reality of their situation.

Getting to know Eugene and Abraham. Eugene mostly stays in the background and Abraham is a hard character to like.

Michonne and Rick are a surprising development. I did not expect that, only knowing the TV series — which is an obvious divergence.

The fight scene in the middle was pretty disturbing. And Rick and Abraham (almost) bonding in the aftermath... by swapping stories of the horrible things they did to survive. Well, blimey. Makes you wonder what you would be willing to do when things go seriously pear shaped, right? Makes me wonder if I would be one of the ones with an off-switch for my morals or if I would end up shuffling along with the herd... And that was creepy as well...

Looks as if there might be a conflict brewing between Dale and Rick.

Some of the artwork in this I like very much. Only took me nine volumes to come around to it...

Collects issues #55-#60

So, as I have finally caught up with the volumes included in Kindle Unlimited, the question now is — do I shell out for a compendium to continue reading this? Is it worth it?

While this volume had many of the same elements and scenes the show did, there were noticeably different plot devices. One shocked me maybe more than any differences have so far.

I'm tracking the differences between the shows and books, so if you don't want spoilers for either, stop reading!

Last chance.

Here goes.

•One significant difference, which I wish they had maintained in the show writing, is that Abraham has stepped up as the leader of the group. Rick isn't doing well. In fact, he's wallowing in uncertainty and doubt in his leadership ability since Lori and the others died. Abraham. Steps. It. Up. And this dude is a BA. I love his character. While the show minimized his presence to more of a background character, the Book Abraham is impossible to gloss over. Cool dude that also shows his human side. I struggle with liking Rick in the show. And I don't really understand the savior complex that follows his character. This diverts some of that to someone new and deserving.

•Rick continues to talk to Lori on the phone he carries around in his satchel. I don't remember this happening in the show. Am I forgetting this? I know he talked to her on a phone, but I don't remember him lugging the phone around and continuing to do it.

• Maggie hanged herself. This was, hands-down, the most shocking moment for me so far in the book series. Without any preamble, Glenn goes to look for her in the woods where she was going to the bathroom and finds her hanging. The group cuts her down, Abraham tries to shoot her to keep her from turning, Rick and Abraham have a gentleman's agreement regarding this involving much gun pointing and name calling and f-bomb dropping, and Maggie revives after CPR from Glenn.

•Abraham, Rick, and Carl return to Rick's old precinct to collect what's left of the supplies. Again, I don't remember this happening in the show. But while in the neighborhood, they meet up with Morgan again.

•Morgan has been keeping Duane, his little boy, alive while chained to a wall. Oh yeah, he's a zombie now. Rick encourages him to come with them and leaves Morgan alone in the house with a gun to finish things and get some closure. We hear a gun go off and Morgan comes out of the house. As they all drive off into the sunset, a little Zombie Duane comes tottering out of the house, the chain still attached but broken, allowing him to wander free, presumably shot in two by a gun.

•Dale and Andrea talk about breaking off from the group. Again. But when Rick & Co. show up with their hair on fire yelling at everyone to pack their bags because a herd is coming, they leave with them again. But Dale's starting to cop an attitude toward Rick. We get the feeling there's trouble a-brewin'.

I'd rate this book an M for gore and violence, swearing, and some very mature adult themes such as rape.

This was another great volume, we pick up with Rick and all living their life attacked by zombies and there is tension between him and Abraham after the MAGGIE fiasco and then they decide to go to Rick's police station to get more supplies, they are attacked by evil people and things that happen there are disturbing. We pick up with Morgan from vol 1 as his son is a zombie and we take him and more stuff happens and then the big revelation with the herd and how they escape them is the point. They gotta take everyone from the farm away from the herd to protect them. Things are popping off for everyone and this series is becoming so good now and there is distrust between Dale and Rick and so more drama and tension meanwhile the zombie horde is after them. The series is getting good now and picking up pace and just showing whats it like to be on the run.

Abraham is a far more interesting character than pretty much everyone else combined. Next to him, Rick looks almost like a caricature.

These later volumes, there's more and more moments that happen off-camera than there used to be. I still can't believe how unnaturally flat some of the dialogue is, but I swear Kirkman's actually learning something about plotting.

Interesting philosophical considerations that reflect back on what has transpired for some of the characters. Could've been handled better, but a little horrifying to see it all laid out in one shot, regardless.

This is my least favorite out of the series so far. Not a big fan of the new group of survivors and I hated how slow pace this story has become. Rick is fucking crazy as hell and the only people I tolerate are Glenn, Maggie, Michonne, and Andrea at times. Hopefully this picks up again because I miss how awesome these books were....

There are two critical moments in this episode: Maggie's attempted suicide (the first failed attempt that we have seen, I believe) and the reunion with Morgan. Rick's relationship with Abraham becomes deeper as well. I liked how each of the characters are coming to grips with their own means of survival as individuals and as a group.
