GENRE: ADULT CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE Please be advised that this book is NOT suitable for Young Adult readers due to language and explicit sexual situations.
Hale Simmons dreams of climbing out of her impoverished life, going to college, and getting herself a titanium crash helmet, so she can eventually bust through the Plexiglas ceiling of her crappy life. But for now, she’s just a 18-year-old girl with a flimsy hope, barely getting by with her alcoholic father, Jerry. But for Hale, ‘crappy’ suddenly takes a nosedive, when Jerry becomes the sole witness to a horrible accident. It is an event which means to effect everyone, especially Hale, who wasn’t even involved. While the depth of the accident has just begun to unfold, Otto Maree, a prominent business man and old family friend, stands to lose everything because of it. Otto is desperate for Hale’s father to stay quiet about what occurred the night the two men met for a drink. Out of mutual moments of desperation, the two fathers forge a deal. Jerry is desperate to gain financial stability for both himself and Hale, and Otto Maree is more than willing to pay to keep his secret just that. But deals like this need to be made of the strongest vows and bound with the most faithful of loyalties. Otto proposes a marriage between Hale and his playboy-son, Oscar, in order to assure that the secret remains ‘in the family’. The mystery surrounding the accident continues to grow and Hale struggles against her own mysterious feelings that begin to develop for Oscar, who turns out to less of a playboy, but just as fiercely loyal and dedicated as his father. As the pressure around her continues to escalate, Hale realizes that she’s got to decide if this arranged marriage is really just a big mistake or an amazing twist of fate that has been waiting around for this particular accident to happen.

I never thought I’d fall in love with a story about an arranged marriage, but I did! This is one of those stories I stayed up into the wee hours of the morning to finish. I loved it that much!
Eighteen year old Hale has plans to go to college, better her circumstances, and live a normal life. Her plans DO NOT include being forced into an arranged marriage, but her father has other ideas. When a tragedy happens to her father and an old friend, they get together and hammer out a plan to keep each other’s secret by uniting their families with the marriage of their children. Hale married to Oscar. Oscar is a stranger to Hale, someone she’s never laid eyes on, so she’s beyond shocked that her father comes up with this cockamamie plan! Plus, hello, this is the 21st century, not the middle ages! As the circumstances are revealed, Hale realizes this is indeed going to happen and she can’t say no. Panic sets in, as it would to any sane person. That’s when she meets Oscar.
Oscar is gorgeous, rich, and sweet. While this makes the proposition marginally better (hey, it could be a 60 year-old hairy ogre of a man!) but still, Hale feels like she is the cow being bartered away without any thought to her wants and needs. In view of the agreement, Oscar sweeps Hale away to the family’s beach house to get better acquainted before making things official. In the midst of all this the mystery behind the fathers’ pact is slowly revealed and things become more dangerous for all involved, especially Hale.
I’ve had my eye on this story for some time. The synopsis immediately caught my eye, because it was so different from any other reads, but then I’d get distracted by review books and had to put off. Finally after a few trusted blogger friends reviewed this, (Andrea @The Bookish Babes, Heidi @Rainy Day Ramblings and then finally Maja @The Nocturnal Library) I gave in and read it! I’m sorry I waited so long!
Okay, so this may not be the most realistic set of circumstances. I was wondering how the author was going to convince me this could be believable in any way. I was surprised to find that Ms. Provencher pulled it off, even with Oscar being the swoony catch he is. How lucky can a girl get? Apparently, very!! Oscar in all his loveliness: “I got incredibly lucky that I don’t have to take a toad for the team. In fact, if you are half as much on the inside as you are on the outside, Hale, than I didn’t even have to dodge a bullet. What I did was hit the mother of all jackpots.”
“I think you are perfect for me, Hale, and I’m just waiting for you to realize that I’m perfect for you.”
“Will you?” Oscar asks again, removing the ring. He takes my hand, and slips the ring onto my finger. “Say yes. Please, Hale. Not just because we’re supposed to, but because you think you might actually be able to fall in love with me.”
This isn’t a very long book (190 pages) but I loved every delicious page! It’s a testament to Misty Provencher’s addictive writing that I stayed up until three in the morning to finish this!! She had me hook, line and sinker!! Now I MUST pick up her other series: Cornerstone. I already have the first book locked and loaded on the Kindle! While putting this review together I notice Landon, Oscar's best friend has his own story: Full of Grace. There may be another late night reading in my future!
“Probably not a good idea Oscar,” I try to joke. “You are loyal, remember?” “I am,” he sighs, “but if you are going to be my wife, I guess that trumps any loyalty I have to a girlfriend, now doesn't it?”
This book was incredible. Absolutely incredible, Hale Maree has become one of my favorite books, and is hands down my favorite New Adult book! Hale Maree was a romantic, steamy, and funny read all in one! When I started this book I could NOT put it down, it had me hooked on the very first page and wouldn't let me go till I finished.
Hale Maree's story kicks right off on the first page, no slow beginning, right on the first page the story picks up! We follow Hale, who is a great main character; she’s very honest, and very likable. She is also spunky, which in my book is always a plus. The ONLY thing that I did not like in Hale Maree was one specific part in the book where Hale tells her best friend how Oscar said something was beautiful, it came off awkward to me personally, and semi cheesy. But besides that tiny part, everything else was amazing.
My favorite part HANDS DOWN about Hale Maree was the romance and our swoon worthy Oscar. Oscar is going to be a book boyfriend for anyone that reads this novel, he is just *swoon* perfect? He ALWAYS says the right thing that will have you reading this book, giggling to yourself over the cute-ness/romantic-ness of his words! This is basically how you will feel/look while reading Hale Maree..
Yes he is THAT amazing! You are going to look like a giddy idiot over this book! I know I was, and I loved every minute of it! Oscar is caring, respectful, sexy, funny, and a freakin gentleman! What’s not to love?!
“I want you so much,” he says. “I've never felt this way about anyone else. Not even close. You have this way, Hale, I don’t know how to describe if, but you have this way about you that I can’t resist. When we’re apart, it’s like I find these holes in myself. Holes I can’t fill up on my own. Things are missing and the longer I’m away from you, the more clear and deep those holes become. But then you walk into the room, and everything comes back together for me again. All my emptiness is filled in. I can’t resist you, Hale, because I need you so much. Without you, I’m not even me.”
Besides Oscar being amazing the overall romance was really enjoyable. There is tension between Oscar and Hale, Hale is often trying to tell Oscar off or convince him the wedding is a crazy idea. While Oscar just keeps pushing her that it’s a great idea and it has to be done. I really just loved their romance, they were never once boring and did a great job at keeping my attention and making me laugh and look like a giddy idiot as shown above.
Apart from the romance and amazing characters, another aspect of Hale Maree that I quite enjoyed was just Misty’s writing in general. Hale Maree flowed perfectly from beginning to end, never did I feel the need to skim through parts of the story, nor did I ever feel I had to force myself to continue reading. I have since read Misty’s other novel Cornerstone (first book in the Cornerstone series) which also flowed amazingly and was very enjoyable.
Overall Hale Maree is a must read for anyone looking for an AMAZING new adult contemporary romance. This book has easily made my top 12 favorite books of 2012.
-sidenote: The author classifies this as an ‘adult’ novel due to the sex scenes. I personally would recommend this as a NEW ADULT novel though, the characters are all young 20’s or just out of high school and act their age. Sex scenes are also not immensely graphic like some adult novels I have read. Recommended for ages 18+
With Hale Maree, Misty Provencher proved once again that she’s very good at thinking outside the box. Arranged marriage is a reality in many places all over the world, but we rarely think about it in the First World context. There aren’t many authors I know of who’d be courageous enough to publish a New Adult contemporary romance that features an arranged marriage, but with Misty Provencher, I’ve learned to expect the unexpected.
Oscar Maree and Hale Simmons have never met before, but they’re suddenly faced with two choices: they can either get married or risk sending both their fathers to jail. It doesn’t take long for Oscar to warm up to the idea, he sees something in Hale he’s never had before, and he’s hell bent on winning her over, but Hale’s emotions are a lot more complicated: at only 18, she’s hesitant to get into a serious relationship, let alone marriage; she doesn’t know OR trust Oscar, and she is deeply hurt by her father’s willingness to “sell” her to his childhood friend’s son.
Admittedly, their story was a bit odd at first, but it didn’t take long for me to warm up to the idea of seeing them together. Hale’s behavior made an unrealistic scenario more easily acceptable. If there’s one thing I struggled with just a bit, it’s Oscar himself. On the outside, he seemed like a perfect love interest, mostly because he behaved as one. He said and did all the right things all the time, but I’d hoped for some insecurity as well. Him being so sure of his intentions and feelings after having no more than a day to process the changes in his life was just a touch too unrealistic.
However, everything Oscar wasn’t, Hale was in spades. Her reactions and fears made perfect sense and I enjoyed her icy demeanor and slow thawing more than I can say. I liked seeing her completely unaffected by Oscar’s wealth, even after a life of abject poverty. In fact, my favorite part of this book wasn’t Hale and Oscar’s romance, it was Hale’s relationship with her father. I think Provencher approached that part extremely realistically, especially in the end. It is a sad fact that alcoholics don’t get better overnight, although they sometimes try very hard.
Hale Maree was made infinitely better by its secondary characters, especially Landon and Sher, Oscar and Hale’s best friends. Each of them was instantly likeable and well developed, so much so that a companion novel called Full of Grace has been written about them.
0 stars really. Who wrote this? A five year old? Can’t believe I was looking forward to reading this book that had the word hymen, virgin AND length in it. Is virgin kink still a thing? Added to Stockholm syndrome, this book is guaranteed to be a waste of your time.
So, not even a full day after finishing HALE MAREE and I am still captivated by the phenomenally awesomeness of this book.... I have read Misty's Cornerstone series and loved it, but HALE MAREE is different, spunky, HOT, suspenseful...I mean, all the great things to make a fantastic novel. For starters, we have Hale, the heroine, that is bound and determined to live her life the way she wants and not fall in to any kind of trap that is laid before her. Even when her heart and body tells her a whole different story, she is relentless to not back down on what she feels she will lose. But, then we have Oscar...AND OMG!!! here is the new guy that everyone will be talking about because of how wonderful he is...Oscar is the guy that is loyal to the end. He is also just as bound and determined to make Hale change her mind as Hale is to keep him from changing hers.... The chemistry between these two is explosive. From their first meeting and until the very end, you are wound so tight waiting to find out exactly what is going to happen...did our heroine and hero actually become a couple??? Hmmmm....just gonna have to read and find out!! And let me say, this book is soooo much more than just the two of them....with a mystery tying all of the lives of our characters together, you are caught on pins and needles, wondering what actually happened, who is actually who in this story... Overall, HALE MAREE is freaking brilliant! Misty blew me away with the nail biting moments, the hot budding romance, and the suspense of our underlying mystery all through the book. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!! Go get your copy today...like me, you won't be able to put it down!!
Move over Garrett and hello, Oscar!! Never did I think I could find a man named Oscar to be hot, sexy, and delicious but Misty Provencher proved me wrong!!
After an incident of which the reader (and Hale) are initially unaware, Hale and Oscar (swoon!) are forced together by their fathers. She is an 18 year-old with a drunk father and only wants to live her own life. He is a rich Playboy, or so we are led to believe. To begin their courtship, Oscar takes her to his father's beach house and from this point on, the story explodes.
The sexual tension in this book is HOT. I adore a story that isn't hitting me in the face with sex from page one and that's what is fabulous about Hale Maree. While you know and feel the attraction is there, Hale is trying to deny it in order to stay in control of her life. Oscar is doing all he can to come off as trustworthy and loyal. Somehow that combination leads to unbelievable chemistry that makes you want to scream at her to give in. I have to give Hale props because if I had Oscar pursuing me, well let's just say the book would be shorter!
The story itself is so much more than a romance. Yes, that is a huge part but there is also a lot of suspense added into the mix. As things become clearer, you feel those butterflies and wonder how things will end. Misty has created yet another work of art and I hope everyone who appreciates a well-written romance will grab a copy and devour it the way I did.
This book was obviously NOT for me and I skimmed quite a bit of it.
For starters the romance is WAY too quick to develop. Insta attraction with one of them staring at the other in a way that they have never stared at anyone before within a DAY of knowing each other. Like whaat?
The mystery type thing was so unbelievable I am not even sure there is a term for that amount of unbelievable. *shudders*
The characters didn't work for me either. They were all pretty pretty and Oscar was overly perfect (if you've read the book... also refer to the mystery part for why I think he is WAY too good). Hale, she obviously has some issues but they weren't explored as much as they could have possibly been.
Even her relationship with her Dad, there was no real resolution everything just 'worked out'.
and despite everything when they get their HEA, I find it very hard to believe that an 18 year old would want to get married to a guy she barely knows. For most people marriage isn't the first thing on their mind when they graduate high school. What about her dreams of going to college? They were only brought up twice and never talked up.
★★★★! Cute love story, a peculiar initial plot with an added mystery. Great hero & heroine plus likeable side characters.
I will just second my GR friend Vikki’s review. Once you get past the initial plot there is a mystery to be solved in addition to the developing love story.
Hale Simmons (18 years/just graduated high school) is wonderful, memorable and so very charming. Oscar Charles Maree (24 years/businessman/black hair/dark eyes) is one of those adorable heroes, sweet, likeable, handsome and sexy.
I enjoyed Landon and Sher as well!

Would I recommend this book: Yes. Would I re-read this book: Probably not.
I'm sitting here taking in this totally decidedly different and somewhat controversial story. The writing is of course brilliant and so down to earth. I've come to expect nothing less from this author. She has a gift for immediately drawing you in. Captivating you with a storyline so unlike anything you've ever read. Creating characters you find yourself rooting for, swooning over, and unable to pull yourself away from. In short, crafting tales you cannot put down and never want to end. Hale Maree is no exception. So why is this story controversial? In short, crafting tales you cannot put down and never want to end. Hale Maree is no exception. So why is this story controversial? Well, it's not often in this day and age that you find someone forced into an arranged marriage. It's pretty much unheard around here. What's amazing about this situation is the circumstance which provokes the fathers to make such a deal. The details of "the event" are a bit shocking and so suspenseful, and continue to be revealed as Hale and Oscar's own story unfolds. And Oscar's degree of loyalty to his family- for such a young man to make such a sacrifice and agree so easily to take on a life with someone he's never met. Wow. Also unheard of. And disturbingly romantic. Of course with Hale being younger, more naive and innocent, well this does not work in to her plans. She wants to date, fall in love- a lot, have a normal teenage love life, and plan for her future. She most certainly wasn't ready to settle down with a stranger. Unfortunately she's not given much of a choice. Her father makes more of a sacrifice in order to make her comply. As you can probably guess this story is very much about sacrifice, loyalty and trust. It's also about discovery, faith and fate. And playing for keeps. Aside from the fact that she's beautiful and unique, Hale is so easy to relate to. Despite her unusual circumstance, she's an average young adult. Trying to fit in and find herself while she deals with school and her not so perfect home life. She doesn't trust easily and keeps to herself. Oscar on the other hand is gorgeous, strong, confident and not afraid to jump in head first. And boy does he. Theirs is not an easy alliance, but it's obvious they'll have to make the best of it- and the universe has it's own plan. Hale Maree is a complicated tale that starts with horrific events, uneasy and problematic relationships, and builds into a story filled with suspense, humor and one of the most fun and unexpected love stories I've read in a long time. It may not have been happenstance that brought Hale and Oscar together, but these two, well...what a joy they were to get to know and grow with. Hale is like your new best friend; so kind and genuine. And Oscar; he's the guy you might crush on, maybe even attempt to resist..and then you realize he's so much more. I am totally flummoxed as to why this book was so darn appealing. The plot was more than just a little reality stretch (though I guess I really shouldn't complain since it was certainly clearly stated in the blurb, and I did buy it). There was never enough explanation to make the whole arranged marriage thing justifiable.
And why Oscar went along with it without a peep of protest is still a mystery (I would pay good money to read this book from Oscar's prospective just so maybe I could understand.)
All that aside, I freaking ADORED Hale. She was awesome. No swooning over the hot guy and losing her brain - not Hale. She knew the situation was all kinds of jacked up, and had no problem telling Oscar that at every turn. It was nice for once to see a character who is a Virgin act like one. ( not that there is only one way for a virgin to act, but most of the ones I see in books these days are pretty much ready for anything, no real nerves or reluctance)
In most ways, Hale is older than her years. She has grown up dirt poor with an alcoholic dad, and deadbeat mom. When Oscar asks what she wants from their relationship I almost cheered at her answer:
"I want you to worship me, I say. Oscar's entire forehead wrinkles up with amusement as he chews. "Worship? Seriously? " he asks, his mouth full. "Yup." "You mean like bowing when you walk in the room? Making alters? That kind of thing?" I roll my eyes. "No, I mean that if I call for you, I want to know that you'll come running. I want to know that, when I walk in a room, you'll notice. That if I burn dinner or turn your t-shirts pink or gain five pounds, you'll stick with me. When we talk, I want you to really hear what I'm trying to say. That's what I want from you."
She is smart and funny and realistic. I'm pretty sure she is the most realistic heroine I've "met" in a long time.
Oscar is pretty perfect too. He's just on the good side of "too perfect". He obviously has a thing for Hale from the beginning, and he's not shy about telling her. He has many a swoon worthy lines.
Overall, I really liked this. I'm sure that some readers will get caught up in some of the oddities about plots and motivations, and it could deter from there enjoyment. But for me, I loved Hale and Oscar too much for it to bother me.
Four stars: An engaging read that features an arranged marriage!
Hale busily prepares dinner, not knowing when her father will return home and in what condition he will be. Her father has a drinking problem and he is always dragging home skeevy men. She hears him enter, and sure enough, he brings home an unexpected guest. This time it is a long lost friend from childhood. Hale quickly grabs her food and heads to her room to hide. She knows better than to hang around with two drunk men, but as she steals down the hall, she hears something that stops her in her tracks. The pair begins whispering about her, and Hale's heart plummets to her feet as she hears her dad discussing marriage with this man's son. Feeling sick, she hides in her room hoping fervently that is just the talk of two drunkards. The next morning, her worst fears are confirmed. Her father tells her she must marry Oscar Maree, because there has been some trouble and the marriage is the way to ensure her future and Mr. Maree's image. Hale stubbornly refuses, but her father says she has no choice. Will Hale indeed marry a stranger?
What I Liked: *Over the past year, Misty Provencher has become one of my favorite indie authors. I adored her Cornerstone Series. I know that when I pick up one of her books I will get an interesting story with amazing characters. Her male leads are especially swoon worthy, first Garrett and Sean (Cornerstone) and now Oscar Maree. Oscar with his washboard abs and considerate personality will have you swooning. If all grooms in arranged marriages were like Oscar, I think girls would be clamoring to be betrothed into a promised marriage contract. He is kind and caring, loyal and good natured and extremely patient. One of my favorite moments in the book is when he tells Hale at their second meeting that he forgives her for assuming he is like everyone else, and indeed this is true. He is not your average boy. *I enjoyed the story line in this one. It is completely different and unexpected. Sure, I admit that the entire contrived marriage plot is a little hard to swallow, but Misty makes a good case and I was easily convinced that it could happen. I liked that this story has a situation that is unique along with a bit of a murder mystery and, of course, a smoking hot romance. *The romance in this one is interesting to watch unfold. Hale is dragging her feet unwilling to enter into this marriage contract despite her father's demands. When she meets Oscar his charming manners and good looks make her waver, but she is stubborn and refuses to acquiesce despite Oscar's pleas. This is one of those relationships that starts off with an antagonistic beginning: Hale insists that she doesn't like Oscar, but as the story progresses her heart flutters and little tendrils take root until she is head over heels for him. Even though the circumstances for the relationship are a bit unbelievable, the resulting chemistry is very convincing. *I liked that Hale is eighteen, shy and a virgin. She is inexperienced when it comes to boyfriends and relationships so when she is suddenly thrust into this arranged marriage she is scared and terrified of sex and intimacy. I appreciated that Misty did such a good job of conveying a girl's fears and desires when it comes to a first time sexual encounter. I think she got the right blend of emotions and feelings. *The addition of Hale's best friend, Sher really lightened up the mood. Sher is hilarious with her overly enthusiastic responses and commentary on Hale's situation. She is the kind of best friend every girl needs and she totally made me laugh with her crazy remarks. I just wish that she had a bigger part in the story. *I was thrilled and surprised to see my name listed in the thank you section at the end of the book. It sure makes you feel good to know that people appreciate you. Thanks Misty!
And The Not So Much: *Hale has a tough relationship with her father, he is an alcoholic who at times can be mean and scary. I felt that this relationship between Hale and her father was not quite fleshed out. Hale appears to love him, and yet she is terrified of him. I just wanted a bit more background information. How did the two of them survive the alcohol binges? Why exactly did Hale's mother leave? Was he a good dad? Did he do a decent job raising her or was she pretty much on her own? A tiny bit more detail on this rocky relationship would have enhanced the read for me. *I struggled with the developments with Oscar's friends. The morning after Oscar and Hale escape to the Maree beach house, when they are in the midst of working things out, Oscar's best friend Landon shows up with his terrible girlfriend Amy, and of course, things get sticky. I felt that Oscar inviting his friend to crash the beach house when he is in the middle of a tricky situation was stupid. Even though I could see why Amy and Landon had to visit, I hated the interruption. *When Oscar first meets Hale he is in a relationship with another girl. Things aren't exactly going well between the two, so when he breaks it off the other girl is a bit put out. Fuming, in fact. I thought at the end, Sophie's quick change of heart was a bit unbelievable. *As much as I loved Oscar, I admit I struggled with him as well. I kept thinking this guy is too good to be true. He is so kind and compassionate and caring, and completely willing to go through with this arranged marriage that I had trouble accepting him. Are there really guys like that out there? Even though he stretches the boundaries of believability, he is definitely worth meeting because he is just wonderful, and smoking hot as well! *Finally, this book is not for the YA audience. It is clearly an adult book or a New Adult title. There are some detailed and steamy sex scenes in this one so heads up! This book is best suited for mature readers.
Hale Maree is a fun little book that features a "Hail Mary" arranged marriage. Can two complete strangers make their marriage work? Find out as Hale and Oscar navigate through this tough and strange situation. Misty Provencher is an indie author to watch. Her writing is funny and engaging and she always manages to make me smile. If you are looking for a new indie author pick up her books with confidence knowing you are in for a good read!
Favorite Quotations: "I think of the whole Hale's-a-virgin-Oscar's not-a-beater-let's-have-grandkids discussion from last night. " "I still cling to the hope that people are good, down deep. The prospect of life being full of a bunch of evil people, who are waiting to screw you over the minute your turn your back, is way too depressing." "What if I said I love you, Oscar?" He finally looks back up, meeting my gaze. "Then I'd come running," he says."
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own and I was not compensated for this review. Posted@Rainy Day Ramblings.
in this story Misty Provencher writes about arranged marriage in modern society.
while i admit the idea is not foreign to me there are not many books discussing the situation. furthermore, here the characters have no say whatsoever.
the story was well written, and the pace was good as well. Hale's reactions were believable most of the time and the relationship developed quite fast but still in a steady rythem.
Misty Provencher created a tolerante, honest, completely hot guy in Oscar. and Hale was a honest, sensetive and charming heroine. I loved them both, and enjoyed how their feelings became more genuine over such a short period of time. it was a short time, yet they understood each other, they cared, they learned- and putting them together in a more or less isolated enviroment did the trick.
Even so, I admitt Oscar's acceptance of the whole marriage thing was kind of hard to digest, while I really liked Hale's reactions to the idea. more importantly, while this was quite a cinderella story- poor girl, rich guy- Oscar's wealth didn't affect Hale's reaction to him for better or worse, and she fell for him for the person he was with her. One of my favourie scenes was when the group went shopping, and Hale used the money Oscar gave her to buy him presents instead of things for herself.
Another favourite scene was when Oscar and Hale were discussing their expectations from the marriage, and Hale said she wanted Oscar to adore and admire her. that he would come running when she called him, that he would think he was lucky to have her even when she gained ten pounds or turned his shirts pink. and Oscar reaction to it was great. It touched me deeply.
Yet, In matters of writing I think Mercy, A Gargoyle Story (also by Misty Provencher) was far superior in matters of beautiful writing. don't get me wrong, Misty Provencher writes beautifully. but in Mercy the writing is more lyrical and fairy-tale like. Also, I found Hale Maree companion novel, Full Of Grace to be more rounded in the character and relationship development even though less original (although she still managed to explore an ancient plotline through new eyes).
Anyway, I'd definetly keep a close eye on Misty Provencher development as an author. and I warmly recommand you read her books. ;)
I love Misty! She has quickly become one of my favorite authors and a dear friend! When I learned that she was writing this book, I jumped up and down. Why?! Well, for one this is a different story for Misty. Two, it sounds interesting. Three, I love the COVER!! haha!
Best part of book: Hale and Oscar are the best characters! Hale, 18, young with an alcoholic father and is just trying to get by. Then her whole life is turned upside down when her dad comes home with some guy he knows and proclaims that she is getting married. *shakes head* WHAT!??!?!?! This is 2012 not 1712! I think (in fact I know) I would have reacted just like Hale did!! Enter: Oscar! (Hello, new fictional boyfriend) Oscar was not what I was expecting. From the book description you see "play-boy" and Oscar is so much more. (Man, Misty knows how to make a girl swoon). The thing I love most about him is that he truly cares about Hale's feelings in this situation that they are in. I love every part of this book.
Not so great about book: I wish there was an epilogue or maybe a little bit longer ending. I would have like to see the lives of Oscar and Hale after everything happened to them, Maybe Misty has some more stories in that pretty head of hers and will release more ..... maybe I could bribe her with cookies (hhhhmmmm)
Who the heck arranges marriages in the US anymore? I mean, really...it's 2012. But Provencher took something so farfetched and made it into a book. The whole idea was gutsy...but so brilliant and believable. I literally devoured this book within 5 hrs. I stayed up almost until 3am to see what would happen and to finish this awesome book. Then I was left wide awake replaying it in my mind. Those crazy characters wouldn’t shut up so I could go get some sleep.
I think readers will get a kick out of the storyline. I know what you are thinking…who can make someone marry someone else these days? But Provencher really made you believe that this marriage was going happen…that it had to happen. The way the story plays out…readers will be intrigued and a little weak in the knees. The romance is swoon-worthy and there was enough in the story to have me grinning the entire time. ‘Cause this gal loves some romance.
Convincing Hale that Oscar really is a good guy is no easy feat. But seeing it unfold and watching Hale cave is priceless. Musty (inside joke), I loved this story and everything about it. You had me addicted from the very start…and not once did I put it down until I was done. Great story and I recommend it to anyone who loves romance with a side of suspense. Read it and let me know what you think.
I finished this book yesterday and I'm still reviewing everything that happened in my head...I'm left wanting more, so much more...That's only to say because I loved the characters so much and felt invested in them. It was unlike any story I've read as of late. I had no idea when I started it what to expect and it went off the grid so to speak but in a VERY good way! I have to add how much I love Hale's name, love!!
Oscar is my new book boyfriend. Happy sigh... He was so attentive, manly and funny, sweet and charming. The list goes on and on... Hale reminds me of me in the book at that age. That's probably sharing way too much but hey I'm honest. She is also strong and in so many ways. To deal with her past and her now she would have to be.
I cannot stress enough how wonderful Hale Maree is and I'm waiting and hoping with bated breath that there will be more!! One can only hope right?
I am currently sitting here at 2am in the morning writing this review because honestly plain and simple it deserves it. This book is completely different to your 'normal' love story. I love the way this book is written and yes after you read this you WILL have another book boyfriend to add to your lists ;) Oscar is the complete package but the way he has so much patience and understanding for Hale it just makes you melt even more.
Thank you Misty for sharing Oscar, but just so you know I'm not giving him back ;)
OSCAR WORTHY!!!! This book is sensational but after reading the Cornerstone series I’ve come to expect nothing but the best from Misty. The synopsis of the book gives you enough details so I’m not going to elaborate. However, I have to tell you that you will not be able to resist Oscar. He is everything, and more, and just like Hale, you will fall in love with him. The story is fresh, entertaining, and it will stay in your heart for many years to come. Congratulations Misty. You have extraordinary talent.
I'm actually really intrigued by the idea of an arranged marriage. I have watched a lot of lifetime movies and have read quite a few Harlequins about them. LOL I like that this was a more modern arrangement and understood the circumstances that Hale and Oscar were thrown into. Their dads are mutual friends and one night something bad goes down. Oscar's dad would like Oscar to settle down and locking him down into a marriage with Hale's father would guarantee that Hale's father will never tell or not only would he ruin his friend but his daughter too. Hale's father is jobless and a drunk but he truly loves Hale and wants a better life for her. Oscar is rich and gorgeous so her dad thinks he would be a great match and kicks her out to go move in with Oscar.
With no other option Hale heads with Oscar to his families lake house. Oscar really wants this to work and he was actually really sweet and honest about the entire situation. He told Hale what really happened right at the beginning. Oscar wants to get to know Hale and have her say yes to marriage and not feel forced. Hale is only 18 and inexperienced and a bit scared to be with the 24 year old known playboy. I enjoyed the aspect of the arranged marriage because Hale and Oscar skipped the games and got right to the point of what each other want in a relationship and worked toward being that for each other. Oscar truly wanted to make her happy.
I loved their scenes together. There was humor, romance, and a few steamy scenes. I enjoyed watching them fall in love. Hale was scared and reserved but Oscar slowly brought her out of her shell and truly listened and knew her by the end of their stay. Before long Hale can't deny she has real feelings for Oscar. If anyone would like to arrange a marriage for me with a super hot and rich guy then please arrange away! LOL I devoured their story in one sitting. I also loved that in the end everything was cleared up and then Hale was completely free to choose whether or not to marry Oscar without any obligations. If you're looking for a great new adult romance then I highly recommend this! I actually kept thinking about the couple long after I finished their story.
----- "I want you to worship me," I say. Oscar's entire forehead wrinkles up with amusement as he chews. "Worship? Seriously?" he asks, his mouth full. "Yup." "You mean like bowing when you walk in the room? Making altars? That kind of thing?" I roll my eyes. "No. I mean that if I call for you, I want to know that you'll come running. I want to know that, when I walk into a room, you'll notice. That if I burn dinner or turn your t-shirts pink or gain five pounds, you'll still feel lucky to have me. When we talk, I want you to really hear what I'm trying to say. That's what I want from you." "Done."
It's like the entire room disappears and all I see is Oscar with his level gaze, as he drops his voice to a whisper and says, "Come here." But I stay where I am, with the sun warming my back through the windows, and I shake my head at him. "No," I say. "Come running." He doesn't hesitate. Oscar crosses the room in four strides, pulling me into his arms.
Who still does arrange marriages? It's not usual, but I know there are still people, families or even tribes who do arranged marriages. It’s really not often that I get the chance to read stories scoping this subject so there is this sense of interest and intrigue in me as to how the author would convey a story with the said subject added to that is another mysterious and suspenseful event.
Since I’m already there on the story itself, I’m going to tell you guys that the story line of Halle Marre is a definite KICK-ASS!! The whole arranged marriage idea was too unused so as I’ve said I was intrigued and interested as to how the author would convey this into the story but I’m definitely glad that the author did well with it! The concept was really not believable but the author seems to have a magical storytelling skill that makes that concept believable and complete sensed. Everything from the romance to the action, to the mystery is well mixed – making the plot not forced for the readers.
The arranged marriage is not what the whole story is about, the side plot – caused by certain circumstances that leads to the arranged marriage – adds up a great mystery and hype to the story.
Oscar Marre - easy and graceful like a smoke. I was surprised to see that a character like him would have this genuine feeling of protection over his father. I know guy characters don’t usually go stumbling and succumb to their father's wishes without any protests but though Oscar didn’t jump to the situation happily he did his best to be optimistic about it - for the sake of his father and Hale's. He's kind and thoughtful and patient with Hale for he didn’t force her to do anything aside from letting him earn her trust which I thought was really nice.
Hale is scared of the unknown and is confused and angry and upset not only to her father but to everything that happened. She feels that her father sold her out for money. Though she's skittish and a bit hard to get along with - I see the true her whenever she talks with her best friend Sher.
The romance started as and easy and fun one but ended in a very romantic, deep and emotional one. Neither of the characters is jumping up and down excitedly about the situation they’re in BUT the very very good thing about it is that both parties seems met at the middle – they’re not pretty much happy about it but totally no hateful to each other. I think that kind of attitude makes it more believable. The relationship build up was so convincing and greatly done.
Hale Marre is a very unexpected but a very good contemporary read to me. It was fun and mysterious and gripping. This is my first novel written by the author and would surely not be the last. ;)
This was the first novel I read by Misty Provencher, so I honestly had no idea what to expect other than the blurb about the book and some talk I had read on line. On the day this book was released I decided to give it a try and read it immediately. I’m really glad I picked up this book. Here’s why: the writing was smooth and fluid throughout which made it easy to pick up the book and keep on going until the end. I didn’t feel that any part of the writing was out of place in the story – there weren’t any of those awkward moments that don’t feel right. The story telling was funny, sexy, exciting, with a smidge of suspense and deliciously hot without going over the top.
The characters were put together and developed quite well. I loved that each had personality and were inimitable. Their banter and inner dialogue was smart, funny, and sexy at times, adorable, and tender. Some of the banter between Hale and her best friend Sher was hilarious. The author perfectly captured their conversations. So many of the exchanges in this book were quotable and memorable! I imagined some of my girlfriends having the same type of ridiculous chatter and laughing uncontrollably. Now, when we are first introduced to Oscar I was blown away. He is sweet and SEXY! I think he could melt me with a look. I loved that he put it ‘out there’ that he was not like all other guys. More importantly he knows his way around the sex and getting your blood boiling! Oscar is all that and then some and qualifies for book boyfriend status immediately (the line forms behind me). He was determined and made a believer out of me. Hale held her own and I liked her way of going about life, her situation and the challenges and decisions she faced. I liked her personality – she wasn’t whiny, she wasn’t indecisive, she was just youngish, but not immature and she was put in a bad situation. Her point of view was quirky and she had solid character.
Okay, so the writing was imaginative and solid. This book was not run of the mill, it was refreshing. I found it to be so much more than I expected. It had a few twists and turns and was overall captivating. If anything, I wish the book had been longer, I feel it was a bit short (because I was enjoying it so much). The author could have played me and kept me going with more angst and relationship development. I just wanted more!
Misty Provencher’s writing was impressive and made a fan out of me. I will be looking forwarding to reading more of her adult contemporary work. Give it a try! Hale Maree is worth it.
tbh it's my first time to read a book with a story like this. usually I just watched in a telly and I'm a fan. it fantasized me. lol .
[!!!] HOLY MOTHER GOAT! I found this book! & NOW I'M HOOKED!!!!!
Oscar Maree & Hale Simmons!!!
Its been 7 days ( sorry for late review though) IM STILL HAVE HANGOVER OVER THIS BOOK! GAAHHH!
When I read the synopsis. The book really caught my eye. So I read it right away. Well the effect its still on me.
Hale, well an 18 year girl, who like any other girl, likes to go to college and have a life but her alcoholic father, Jerry make an agreement with his old mate, Otto Maree which is the father of Oscar Maree a wealthy, good-looking guy, play-boy.(hmmmmm)that the two of them should be marry because of what happened that night. Otto Maree promised to provide the financial need of Hale's father but in one condition, his daughter needs to marry his son, Oscar. Otto Maree did to keep his secret.
Oscar has no problem with the agreement because He wants his father's secret to be safe. but Hale... SHE DOESNT LIKE IT! Until Oscar tell the truth to her........
Hale began to like Oscar ( who doesnt want wealthy, goodlucking minus playboy guy). She agreed to the arrange married & fell inlove with Oscar.
Well, Oscar is gentleman guy... he really wants to take Hale's virginity after the marriage but... Hale's insist. (take note* that scene is steamy hot /tsk tsk! *blushed*)
Wedding Scene (hoot i love it)
"Then let me" I say. " Because I love you, Oscar. I want to marry you, and be your wife, and argue about children. I want everything about you. I do."
Hale Maree grabbed me from the first page and I had to force myself to turn off my iPad to go to sleep. I fell in love with Hale when she overheard her dad speaking with Otto and it only kept getting better. Then…enter Oscar. The chemistry between the two characters was so amazing, the reader could literally see it unfolding before her eyes. I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see that happened next. I wanted to read all night, but I had to force myself to turn my iPad off and finish the next night. Misty has a knack for putting you right into her character's mind, getting you wrapped up in their emotions and making you feel as if you are a part of them. If hot, steamy romances are your passion, then you'll fall head over heels for Hale and Oscar.
loveee this book the only problem I have with it is that it have a girl in a wedding dress as a cover the story line keep being about getting marry and a wedding but when it actually come to that important an part of the book it came so fast and with few details that I didn't even knew that it was finish wish it would have been a longer story but overall it was a good story like it very much will love to see a sequel between her friend sher and landon it will be a cute story
The ending seemed rushed. Would have liked an epilogue that shows them a few months or years down the road. Oscar is a great character along with BFF Sher. This book had a lot of potential but I don't think it was reached.
Loved it!!!! It was such a fun, addicting and romantic read. Arrange marriages are very special to me and I love how perfectly the emotions were portrayed in this book. The reasons behind it was pretty far fetched, but it worked. All in all, Hale Maree was a great read.
I bought this book on it's release date and couldn't wait to read it. From the cover and the synopsis, I knew this was going to be a book I would enjoy immensely. Let me tell you now, I was not wrong.
I've been on a self-imposed ban over the Christmas period to not read, review or write. But I couldn't help myself picking this up. Every time I looked at my bookshelf at screamed at me, begging to be read. So eventually, yesterday, I gave in. I was hooked from the first word until the very last. I wasn't really sure how this book would play out. I have to be honest, I thought to myself 'an arranged marriage in this day and age?' I wasn't sure how the author would manage to pull it off. But oh my goodness, I was wrong. If I'm perfectly honest, I would go through with an arranged marriage myself, just as long as Oscar Maree was my intended husband! *Swoons* Oh Oscar....
It all starts one night when Hale Simmons' dad returns home from the pub with his friend Otto Maree. Hale overhears some of their conversation but wishes she hadn't, for what she heard would change her life immeasurably. Why? Well the men were discussing an arrangement whereby Hale would marry Otto's son, Oscar. Hale can only hope that this drunken conversation will be forgotten in the morning. Unfortunately in the cold light of day, Hale's dad explains that he expects her to marry Oscar. He doesn't tell her why, only that he needs her to go through with it. Hale meets Oscar and begrudgingly admits to herself that she thinks he's attractive. Well, beyond the normal parameters of 'attractive' - this guy is HOT. His sculpted muscles, his gorgeous face... But no, she won't go through with marrying him just because their fathers concocted some scheme whilst they were drunk.
Otto gives Hale's dad a truck and all the things he needs to start a new business venture as part of the deal. Though Hale likes seeing her dad sober and working, she doesn't want to marry a guy she doesn't know. She wants to go to college and do things that normal 18 year old girls do. She won't let her dad force her hand in this.
But when Hale is alone with Oscar, he tells her the reason behind them having to get married. It's in order to keep a secret. I can't tell you what that secret is, but, the fact is, it's huge and needs something put in place to stop it from getting out; this being the marriage.
Hale and Oscar end up at the Maree family's beach house.
Hale isn't at all happy about this arrangement and would do just about anything to get out of it. But the more time she spends with Oscar, the more she comes to like him. Oscar is a genuinely nice guy. He doesn't take advantage of Hale. He knows that she's uncomfortable with the situation and though it isn't ideal, he does his best to accommodate her.
Oscar doesn't see any other option than to go through with this. But that doesn't mean that he doesn't come to genuinely like Hale. At one point he tells her that he's hit the mother of all jackpots by being her suitor.
Though Oscar was in a relationship with Sophia, it had to come to an end the moment his father made this arrangement. But if he's honest with himself, he wasn't all that happy with Sophia anyway.
Oscar knows how Hale feels about having to marry him but he wants to win her round. He wants her to like him and maybe even love him one day. This means that he takes things slowly, building her trust in him gradually. He's such a gentleman. Any girl in their right mind would fall for him. But Hale is dubious of just about everything. She fights with herself about how much she really likes him. It doesn't help matters when his friends come to the beach house to stay for the weekend. She knows that she has to play part of the 'happy couple' so she does her best to convince Landon and Amy that her and Oscar are in love.
I can't tell you more without ruining the story for you, suffice to say that there is a twist I certainly didn't see coming.
Misty Provencher managed to make this story something out of the everyday within the Adult Contemporary Romance genre. Her writing style sucks you in and doesn't let go of it's hold on you right up to the end. Once I started reading, I literally could not stop. I had to be prized away to go for a shower and as soon as I was done, I was back reading until the end. There was no way I could go to bed without knowing the outcome. It took me about 8 hours to finish and I can honestly say that they were the most enjoyable 8 hours I could have had.
Misty managed to make me laugh and cry but overall, she managed to make me feel happy. The fact is, this book could have been written by someone else and they may not have pulled it off but Misty had the skill to develop the story beyond what I initially thought it might be. I love how she didn't just throw the two of them together and they were like 'oh yeah, let's fall instantly in love and get married'. Instead she made Oscar woo Hale. He's one of the most romantic, sweet love interests I've read in a while. This was the first book I've read in 2013 and all I can say is my year started off with a BANG! Oscar Maree is my first book boyfriend of the year and let me just give a message to all book boyfriends to come; 'You all have a lot to live up to. Oscar is sexy beyond what any man should be. With his incredible body and his wonderful heart'... Oh I could talk about him forever, but I better not for fear of boring you guys to death.
Thank you Misty for introducing me to Oscar and Hale. I had so much fun with them.
