Hell Hounds are for Suckers by Jessica McBrayer and narrated by Valerie Gilbert is a fun book about a goth vampire, a lost "puppy", and a demon. There are more interesting characters too! The puppy ends up being a bit more than a regular dog! He barks fire! Yep, not your normal hound. Cute story.
Narration was very good!

Hell Hounds are for Suckers is an entertaining short read. Considering the novella length, it successfully established a range of highly likeable characters and a background to the main character Hannah.

Hannah is a sassy character, with love issues. Enter her new pet with a gorgeous demon not far behind. This novella is sweet and sexy teamed with a lovely bit of bite. There’s plenty of action and wit, certainly enough to keep you happily turning the page with a smile on your face.

If you’re looking for a fun quick read, with cute characters and an enjoyable storyline, then be sure to check out Jessica McBreyar’s, Hell Hounds are for Suckers.

Dating can be a dog-eat-dog world. Fortunately for single vampire Hannah, the abandoned puppy she finds lost and alone in a cemetery, isn't a dog at all. The fire coughing scamp is actually a match-making hell hound that belongs to a hot Duke from the fiery pits. Before you know it, sparks fly between Hannah and the cocky demon...

Cute little freebie novella, but much too short to have any kind of of depth or real world building.

Overall: I'm gushing over this story right now. It was such a fun and quick read. I loved the idea of a romance between a demon and a vampire with a hellhound being the one to bring them together. I just wish that this story had lasted longer because it just felt like they were finally getting together and then BAM story done. lol

Characters: Hot demon man Deil & Ass Kicking Vamp Hannah

Page Turner: Yes!!

Series Cont: I'm not sure, but i hope so!

Recommend: Yes! Yes! Yes!

Loved it! She finds a hell hound and thinks it's apuppy, until it gets Ginormous! So, she decides it's cool anyway and decides to keep it...but his owner comes looking for him and he wants him back too. Seems someone stole the hound from him and keeps trying to use the hound to get him to fall for her,not that it's working, but she's one dangerous female. The story is funny and interesting and I'm definitely going to read the next in the series, lol.

I really liked the first book in this series, "Sucking in San Francisco," But I loved this little novella, which isn't that short. Hannah the heroine is a sassy, lonely, young vampire. When her best friend starts spending her time with her hunky lover it really underscores how alone Hannah feels. She is discriminating about her company and her little nips of ganja enhanced blood, though the book doesn't go into that much. Most of the book is about Hannah's reluctant relationship to a puppy that attaches itself to her and the puppy's first owner who Hannah might like to be attached to. If she weren't so independent. All the central characters of "Sucking in San Francisco" have a cameo part but novella could stand alone so if you haven't read the first one in the series you're good to go. Loved the hell hound. Liked the whole concept, the humor and the local color. Besides the fire belching dog, you have your sexy demon and my other favorite Aiden the jinni, what a nice curl up and read experience. This is a fun, quick read with a nice flavor of romance.

I did read to review this book but I requested it because I loved the first book so much.

I got to beta read this for critique partner Jessica McBrayer. I've read it twice and am ready to read it again! It's a fun read and while I already loved the characters from the first book in the series, Sucking in San Francisco, Hell Hounds can stand alone and is a humorous, sexy paranormal romance novella.

Though while reading the summary you believe that you are gonna read something life changing and awsome this is not the case. Very poorly written I am afraid. If you think twilight was poorly written then you haven't read this one......I thought it would be funny with lots of romance but that wasn't the case. The only thing that worths in that book is the hell hound.

Love this book! Ganja Girl All the Way! While I do not actively support, or even passively support, the smoking of marijuana...a Vampire that went from overly homicidal to totally mellow just by a change in diet is a pretty cool concept. Then falling in love...well I do not want to ruin the book. Read this, skip the book before it, and enjoy!

I was excited about this story, however it was missing a huge chunk of the story! The story skips from chapter 1 to chapter 10! Hopefully this error is fixed. I'd love to read the whole story :(

A dog is for life!

Another great read but be warned it is under 90% of the page count. This is the story of Lily's friend.
She is lonely and not scared to admit it to herself. Most vampires she knows just don't cut the mustard being so full of themselves and humans are just too short lived. Musing as she wandered through the cemetery that night she heard sounds of a dog. A cute black puppy! When he won't leave she has to take him home but only after buying him supplies. Unfortunately he won't eat the food so she feeds him some 'special' chocolate (her favourite) but this has a bad effect. Flames! Only thing for it is to seek help from Lily and the family. Shocked she finds out he is a hellhound. Next owning an unexpected visitor - a Duke of Hell. He wants his dog. She refuses and Aidan takes him drinking before things get too violent. What happens when the dog is kidnapped? How will she deal with the Duke? Are her days of loneliness over?

Spoilers

Very quick read. Hannah is a camp who finds a hellhound. The ground belongs to a demon who had lost him. Technically he was stolen. Turns out the hellhound jobs also include fixing their master up w their true mate.
The djinn, from book 1 I surmise, becomes the godfather and is the 3rd character besides the demon woman who stole Hades and the friends from the first book. I don't know the first book so the references to them were extraneous for me. Otherwise the book was well written and a quick easy read.

Feisty vamp meets demon through some would say the original matchmaker, the hellhound. Could you get anymore snappier, and the caracters are vibrant and challenging in so many ways.Jessica McBrayer has added a comical introduction to a New additional caracter to the "Vampires of San Francisco "series and I wander is all hell going to break loose. Aquier a copy of "Hell Hounds Are FOR Suckers "so you yourself can enjoy reading it as much as I have. 🙄Kat

Sigh - another cliffhanger ending

I read this second book in the series, it is as amusing as the first story, but again ends in a ‘to be continued ‘ type of cliffhanger. It is a fun story, but I hate this build up of suspense and then to be left hanging is just annoying. Well written, and very amusing. I loved Hades !

Funny,comical and an easy read.

Take a group of vampires, a He'll Hound pet, a Duke from Hades and a Djinn and how can you not find humor. The story is short and leaves you wondering what is next? Otherwise it is an easy read and relaxing.

I absolutely need a hell hound! I wish this wasn’t a novella, because I hated to see it end. Just a fun book and a great story. I really appreciate the enjoyable characters this author has created.

Loved the idea that hell hounds actually help bring couples together. The only thing is I wish it had been longer. I would have liked to have known what happened with Josephine, seen Diel and Hannah court more, seen more about her friends...

The story is just too short.

I have two confessions to make before I review this novella
1) I grew up in San Francisco, living there until my late 30's, and it’s so much fun reading books that mention places I know so well.
2) I really don't like humor, in books, TV or movies (in fact I rarely get jokes!)....I am more of a drama, suspense, mystery person.

That said - this type of humor appeals to me, this novella was wonderful, it's fun, refreshing, love the quirky characters, the nontraditional elements, and the location of the story. Sadly it was short; at only 60 pages, it gave me a glimpse into this author’s writing style, and the characters in the series. There was not much character development due to the length of the novella, but the primary characters are returning from the author’s first book, where I'm sure the reader has a feel for them. New to this novella were our mischievous hell hound and our male lead, as well as our evil demon wannabe lover. There is a strong comradary and support amongst the friends in the book, they are open and accepting of other non-human beings, watching out for each other like any family would.

I rate this book at three stars only for its length, and know that I will be reading the other two books in the series, when I need that quick bit of something different. Reading this author (who is new to me) reminds me of Christopher Moore's style and brand of humor , he is the only author, whose humor I have found acceptable in the past, move over Chris, Jessica McBrayer is sharing the limited humor shelf in my life now too.

This book had a lot of potential, and is certainly a diamond in the rough. I really liked the spunky heroine with plenty of wit and independence, and I loved the voice in which she tells her story. The pace of the plot is nice, and for being a short novella (only 60 pages) the characters are developed. However, often I felt that there was something missing. I found myself wishing that the author had expanded the dialogue between characters so that we could learn more about them, and watch them interact. I also would have liked for Deil and Hannah to have bantered a few more days to increase the tension and attraction between them. The villain was poorly developed and made a very short appearance in the story.

The story is mostly told in the past tense, with the author occasionally slipping into other tenses. There were a few dropped words, and many grammatical errors which were fairly distracting. I would have rated this book 2 stars, but the characters made me smile enough that I could overlook some of the issues. Overall, it was an enjoyable read and I think it could be turned into a great book with some editing and additional character development.

Let me preface this by saying this was a free ebook, so it's not like I held great expectations, Pip.

I couldn't finish it. I tried, I really did. I made it up to 70%.

There are grammar issues and incomplete sentences. The dialogue is very stilted and the writing in general is confusing.

Don't tell me a character is a tough person who never cries and then immediately have her sobbing next, that's not how it works. I know it's a novella and there's limited space, but I feel like there was enough room to show her as tough, beforehand, in order for her crying to actually have some impact. You know what, though? That doesn't even matter, because the characters' reactions are all over the place anyway. At least up to where I quit.

And what's up with all the hissing? Is the MC secretly an angry cat? Once or twice is okay, but she does it several times for no good reason that I could find.
