For a cute sounding premise, this story has a lot more depth, drama and action of the gun kind than it lets on. For romantic suspense lovers who enjoy movies like The Godfather and The Untouchables, this book has captured the tradition, with a paranormal twist.

My Life as a Dog isn’t a tale of adorable and silly antics, nor is it a book about werewolves and demons. No, this story is about falling in love puppy style and finding out that human love is a whole lot more complicated. That canines and man love differently much to my delight and interest. That there are shifting chipmunks that defy bone density and some bad guys are even worse under normal human skin.

The external conflict is brutal, despicable and eye-riveting reading. There are traitors and sadistic humans, double-crosses and political pressures. The internal conflict is a bit easier to understand. How do you tell a woman you love her when all she’s ever known is your puppy side? That would have been an interesting conversation but the authors chose to have it as an afterthought, subjugated by the very nasty crisis that almost kills the hero and heroine. I guess running for your life tends to put things into perspective.

There are light moments where Martin, the hero, has to resign himself to his name, Precious. For a virile and handsome man, that was a bit hard to take. Since this story is written in first person point of view via Martin, it was fun getting into his head. The authors did a good job of not losing sight of the first person point of view; I know that can be challenging especially with such a busy book.

Kady grows from child to woman, from innocent to FBI agent. She comes from a loving and solid family background. The love that surrounds her growing up will hold her in good stead in her adult life and in the course of this tale. She’s likeable, and tenacious, smart and yet, she turns into a little girl every time she gets to cuddle her “Precious”. I couldn’t help but like her.

Although this book is marketed under ‘erotic’, I found it tame in that department. When Martin explored his love for Kady in the human physical way, it was satisfying and well written but nothing extreme. Perhaps it comes from the description of the rape that goes on at a mob’s breaking-in house, perhaps it was because Martin, as Precious, saw Kady in all her glory. I don’t know. I couldn’t figure that out. The thing that did frustrate me was the use of five dollar words. The words by themselves weren’t the problem but where they were used - like referring to his member with ‘detumescence’ after having sex. I had to stop and look up the word, and sure, based on my dictionary it was appropriate. But it threw me out of the afterglow of the moment. It made me stop reading the book. I like learning new things but when I do, I prefer it not to be during a book of fiction. On top of that, do guys actually have that word in their brains after a vigorous sexual workout? Most the guys I know don’t even know that word exists much less have it in their top five words to use regarding their sex. This book would have been fine and could stand strong on its own without the aggrandizing.

That being said, I did enjoy myself. The book is entertaining with a lot of suspense because I never knew who to trust and who was going to survive or die. Just when I thought things were going Martin and Kady’s way, the rug was pulled out from under their feet. This really is a page flipping book because so much goes on and the authors kept it progressing at an effective pace. The dialogue was clear. When the Sufi spoke, I knew who was speaking. When it was Linda, again, the authors painted her personality and quirks in a delightful way. I liked many of the secondary characters and thought they added panache to the tale.

My Life as a Dog is a very meaty and intricate dance of storytelling with action and mayhem keeping a reader on his/her toes. The romance has to dodge and weave through a minefield of emotions, revealed truths and subsequent betrayals. Romantic suspense readers are going to find a lot to enjoy when they pick up this book. Even the wrap-up is typical for Martin, because he’s a thorough kind of guy and his happily ever after is just as complete. This book is well worth the time to check out.

The blurb on Top Dog hooked me. I had to read the story of a shifter who turned into a Yorkie terrier. How as that going to work? I'll admit you have to suspend reality a bit to picture a six foot two-hundred pound man turning into a fourteen pound Yorkie, but really, don't er already suspend reality when we embrace the world of shapeshifters, anyway? Shifting is magic and we all know magic can do anything, right?
"Precious" had been Kady's dog through her rough teenage years, her fiend and confidant. He disapeared when she went off to college. When she encounters a dog that looks just like her Precious at a crime scene, she can't resist taking him home. The similarities between the new "Precious" and the old are stunning!ANd there is a reason why... They are the same little dog.
Drake Martin is a shapeshifter. Occasionally in a shapeshifter's life he meets he meets someone special, and from the moment Drake met Kady, he knew she was a special lady. It broke his heart to leave Kady, but his time with her was up and he couldn't risk detection. WHen fate brings them back together, Drake discovers his feeling for Kady have grown and changed. He loved her as a child, but now he loves her as a woman. But, will Kady be able to accept his secret?
Top Dog had humor, heart, action, and suspense. Watching Drake morph back and forth between dog and man, while they are both supposed to be in the same place at the same time was a comedy of errors.
With a glimpse into the hierarchy of the Shifter clans, a Russian mole in the FBI, human trafficking. kidnapping and murder the action and adventure abound.
Top Dog is written in first person perspective, and I'll be honest with you, I usually HATE first person. But for this story it works. It was actually quite interesting, because it is told more from "Precious'" POV than Drake's.
My only negative about Top Dog was I wanted to know what the "Suffie" turned into! We know he is a canine shifter, but I wanted to know if he was a huge Great Dane or a cuddly Pomeranian!
Check out this unique shifter adventure, you won't be disappointed.

After reading the very last sentence on the very last page, my first reaction is WOW. I say this for a couple of reasons. First, I am not ordinarily a shifter reader and second, how in the world can a shifter who turns into a Yorkie be sexy? This is where the "wow" factor comes in. Never have I read a book that has thrown my preconceptions out the window as this book has. Very early in the book, the first shifter scene actually, it is evident how being able to turn into a cute little dog works to Drake's advantage. His reaction to what he turns into was priceless and made me laugh out loud. A very important part of the book is the beginning. Although the pacing does seem a little slow at first, this is where the foundation lies for the rest of the book. No worries though, when the book does pick up, it is a very fast paced action packed book.

Drake Martin and Kady Harley have a relationship like none I've ever read before. It was fascinating how Mike and Cynthia Arsuaga have developed these two characters in such a tender way. They are able to bond in a way a normal couple never can. The loyalty that Drake shows toward Kady touched my heart and made me just want to say awwwww. As the book develops, so does the relationship between these two exciting and funny characters. The heat level between Drake and Kady soars and I'm more than surprised that my book didn't spontaneously combust! I am a die hard romantic suspense reader who loves humor sprinkled throughout the pages of whatever it may be that I am reading. My Life as a Dog had me laughing out loud at moments and holding my breath at others. This is, hands down, a book that captured my attention and kept it there.

I would like to tell Mike and Cynthia Arsuaga BRAVO! It is not very often that I can say a book changed my opinion about an entire genre. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in paranormal romance. Please keep in mind that some scenes are very erotic and may offend those who aren't interested in erotic. Otherwise, I suggest you run out and buy this book. Read at your leisure because you don't want to miss one thing. I enjoyed my time spent reading My Life as a Dog and look forward to reading more from these authors.

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this as I thought a story about a Yorkie Shifter PI would be difficult to get into. Instead I was riveted to every word and was pulled so far into a great story that I was a little disappointed when it came to an end.

It was nice to get a new and original spin on a beloved genre. If you like shifter romances with an actual story, I'm sure you'll love it.
My only points of contention are that Kady is quite bland, and the end did seem to drag out a bit, but not enough to actually ruin anything.

I really liked this book. Especially the New Orleans references that reminded me of home. This was an unusual shifter book in that it used a yorkie for the main shifter.

I adore PNR stories that have strong Alpha males, so when I saw the cover of TOP DOG by Mike and Cynthia Arsusga, I had to check it out! After read the burp and found out the premise of the story was a shifter turning into a tiny Yorkie, I thought WTH? A Yorkie? Yea, that screams Alpha male… So of course I had to read it!!

When I started Top Dog, I was expecting a very tongue-n-cheek or whimsical type of story. What I found instead was a very well written, satisficing storyline with successfully developed characters. This book totally changed my pre-conceived ideas of how alpha shifter males operate or what they shift into. Within the first few minutes of reading, Top Dog shows readers even a tiny Yorkie can be a force to be reckoned with. My hats off to Mike and Cynthia Arsuaga, a job well done!!

Drake Martin is an ex-hit man, turned PI, who we learn in the prolog, has lived as the beloved pet of an 6 year old girl named Kady Harley. Kady gave her treasured dog the name of Precious, which by the way, Drake Hates! One of the reasons I normally don’t like to read first person, is that it sometimes gets confusing as to who is talking, but I never had that problem with Top Dog. In fact, I became so immersed in the book that I didn’t even notice it was in first person anymore. With that said, I would have loved to read Kady viewpoint as well!

Precious stays with Kady till she heads off for college. The story begins 10 years later, while Drake is on a job, trying to catch a cheating husband. He unknowing walks in on an FBI bust. This is where we see the valuable asset of being a Yorkie, can help a PI. As Drake is sitting and listening to the FBI, he hears the name being whisper that he thought he had left behind years ago… Precious! It’s none other than a very grown up Kady, who is now an FBI agent. Before Drake knows what hit him, he’s in Kady’s purse and on his way to her place.

Watching Drake trying to balance his life as a dog and human, were humorous to say the least, the relationship between Kady and Precious was very touching. Because of the bond between Kady and Precious, when she finally meets Drake (in human form), the connection seems to become deeper, it moves to a whole new level, and the scenes between these two were tender and very moving.

As Kady pursues her case with the FBI and Drake’s over whelming need to protect his love, the adventure and suspense in Top Dog, is non-stop. It’s full of secondary characters that were also well developed and very endearing.

I totally loved this book and just found out that there is a second book out, Love and Death in the Big Easy!! I look forward to seeing what other adventures Precious and Kady have in store for us!!

Imagine a cross between Audrey Niffnegger’s Time Traveller’s Wife, a Jim Butcher novel, and a modern paranormal romance, then you’ll have something like Mike and Cynthia Arsuaga’s My Life as a Dog.

The narrator is a hit-man turned private-eye turned… well, turned into a gorgeous little Yorkie called Precious. Like the traveler in Niffnegger’s more famous novel, he meets a little girl and falls in (puppy) love. Girl loves dog and all’s right with the world, except that, being a shape-shifter, this little dog doesn’t grow old. Eventually, private eye Drake Martin has to leave his comfortable “life as a dog” and re-enter the “real” world, using his transformation skills to help spy out bad guys and cheating husbands. Of course this real world, like Jim Butcher’s, includes some characters rather less common than those we meet every day. And the little girl grows up.

Perhaps it’s fate that Drake meets her again and falls in (grown-up human) love. The relationship contains all the angst and oddity of Timetraveller, plus some scenes involving fairly detailed removal of clothes. Drake’s attempts to hide his dual personality have a delightful humor and intensity. And the danger he and his true love face becomes scarily real-world.

Yes, I guessed who the bad guy was, but that didn’t stop me thoroughly enjoying the mystery. I liked the author’s mild insertion of faith as well, real love, and honest tolerance of difference. There’s something very appealing about the thought that maybe someone, when faced with unavoidable facts, might actually believe them.

Humorous, touching, intriguing and fun, My Life as a Dog is a thoroughly enjoyable story of Russian mobs, human evil, paranormal kindness, and, well, a rather nice intelligent young woman and her Yorkie.

Disclosure: I received a free ecopy of this novel from the authors in exchange for my honest review, and I can only apologize for delaying so long before reading it.

Top Dog by new to me authors Cynthia and Mike Arsuagawas a surprisingly enjoyable story. I had no idea how I’d react to a Yorkie shifter, but I found Drake Martin and his alter ego Precious, to be resourceful, entertaining, and an all around good guy. I thoroughly enjoyed how at home he seemed to be as a small dog in a big dog’s world, and the humorous internal dialogue he had while in his Yorkie form really added another level of enjoyment to the book for me. The manner in which the authors portrayed the intricacies surrounding the evolving relationship between Kady and Drake also displayed excellent character development. Showing the bond between a girl and her beloved pet/confidante, while at the same time the very adult courtship between Kady and Precious’ human counterpart, Drake, could have easily been a campy disaster of epic proportions. I truly feel it was written with a great deal of distinction between the two pairings and handled with as much sensitivity as possible, without sacrificing any quality from the plot.

As much as I enjoyed Kady and Drake/Precious, I have to admit that the secondary characters, and the always enjoyable New Orleans locale, held my attention with equal fascination. The Sufi reminded me of the Godfather, with a healthy dose of humor and affection for those he ruled over. Nothing escaped the man, and watching him outsmart Drake was a surprising plus for me.

All in all, Top Dog by Cythnia and Mike Arsuaga was an entertaining read, and I look forward to immersing myself in future installments of their shifter world.

Four Shooting Stars!!

One of the best paranormal stories I’ve read lately. Well-written, and told from Drake’s POV, it’s a whimsical entertainment, Oh, there are some violent moments, but most of the story is endearing because of the writing style and the delightful turns of phrase. It’s face-paced; I was surprised at how much action was packed in so few pages and had to check page numbers once in a while to ensure myself I actually wasn’t nearing the end of the novel.

This is definitely one novel I’d like to see turned into a movie. Its funny, sexy, exciting, and filled with some very interesting shifters, as well as their own isoteric lore. The scene of Drake trying to maintain a balance between being Precious and his human self without Kady’s realizing they’re never seen together are amusing and clever. I read the story in one sitting because I didn’t want to put it down. You will, too.

For a clever twist on an old theme, I recommend My Life as Dog. (PS, the cute Little Dude on the cover is the authors’ own Precious…but his name is Thumper.)
