I live in Texas now, but I grew up in Cleland Heights, a mixed ethnic neighborhood in Wilmington, Delaware that sat on the fringes of the Italian, Irish and Polish neighborhoods. The main characters of Murder Takes Time grew up in Cleland Heights too, and many of the scenes in the book were taken from real-life experiences.

Somehow I survived the transition to adulthood, but when my kids were young I left the Northeast and settled in Texas, where my wife suggested we get a few animals. I should have known better; we now have a full-blown animal sanctuary with rescues from all over.

At last count we had 41 animals—12 dogs, a horse, a three-legged cat and 26 pigs.

Oh, and one crazy—and very large—wild boar, who takes walks with me every day and happens to also be my best buddy.

Since this is a bio some of you might wonder what I do. By day I am a headhunter, scouring the country for top talent to fill jobs in the biotech and medical device industry. In the evening I help my wife tend the animals, and at night—late at night—I turn into a writer.

Book Info: Genre: Suspense/Thriller
Reading Level: Adult
Recommended for: Fans of suspense/thrillers
Trigger Warnings: murder, rape, drugs, torture, domestic violence
Animal Abuse: attempted cat murder (with arrow), torture of small animals (snake specifically mentioned), dog murder, attempted dog murder

My Thoughts: While this is the second book this author published, I'm reading it first since the other two books I have by him are in the same series, while this one is a separate series. However, Frankie Donovan, a minor character in this book, is one of the main characters in the other series.

One of the cool things about this book is that there is not just one case on which Connie is working, and not all of them are connected. This is much more realistic toward actual police work, and is handled very well in this book. Characters are also very well developed. I really like the dichotomy and tension created for Connie by her being a cop but her family are mobsters. It adds a great touch, and gives her a lot of dynamism.

There is a lot of brutality in this book, of course, but it's about some very not-nice people—mobsters and drug dealers and serial killers—so that is really to be expected. However, sensitive readers should take note of my trigger warnings. This is not a pretty book.

That said, it is a highly enjoyable book for fans of suspense/thrillers. A Bullet for Dominic will be the next book in this series (Blood Flows South), scheduled for sometime in the next year. A novella is currently available, called Finding Family; it is a prequel outlining Dominic's youth. I definitely want to continue reading these books. An outstanding story, and a talented author.

Disclosure: I won this book in a giveaway. All opinions are my own.

A Bullet For Carlos (Blood Flows South)
I had not read any of Giacomo (Jim) Giammatteo's work before, but I am a big fan of action packed, hard edged crime stories and I loved A Bullet For Carlos (Blood Flows South).

Detective Connie Gianelli is a wonderfully human, determined woman whose values have been formed by her life experiences. Years before, Connie's "mother" had refused to marry the love of her life, Dominic Mangini because she could not accept his mobster lifestyle, but she would not marry anyone else either. Dominic was who his was--he could not change; but he loved Maria Gianelli unconditionally and faithfully.

The story opens with a violent mobstyle murder and the unexpected complication of a baby girl found in a backroom. On the "job" Dominic Mangini is a violent, merciless mobster, but in his private life he is a devoted, loving man who cannot leave a child to die. He thinks of Maria, and he knows that now he can give her one thing he has cheated her of--a child. He takes the baby to her and convinces her that it was abandoned in the cold on a street corner and that it was god's gift to her. Reluctantly, but joyfully, Maria embraces the child, whom she calls Concetta. Through the years the child grows up loving her "uncle" Dominic who instills strong Italian family traditions in her--"family is everything" and he is there to protect Connie and Maria, a strong fatherly influence in their family.

When Connie eventually learns that Dominic is actually a mobster she is stunned and she despises him. She joins the police force, in defiance of what he is and does--determined to represent law and justice. Connie Gianelle becomes known "Brooklyn's toughest cop" as she and her team doggedly bring down drug dealers and bad guys. Then one night a drug bust goes bad, and her fellow members are killed. Connie knows she will be next to die. Desperate, she phones uncle Dominic for help, which comes immediately.

Inside the police force rumours about mob family connections have shadowed her career in the past, but now hard question arise--why was she the only one to survive? Why had basic procedure been circumvented? Why wasn't back-up in place? Why had one of her fellow police officers called a mobster? Where did the drugs go? Internal Affairs is investigating her convinced that she is dirty, the police chief wants to bury her, take away her badge. Connie refuses to go easily, so she is assigned to a desk job solving cold cases. She does her job, but is determined to work behind the scenes to clear her name and find out what really happened in that dark alley on that fateful night.

The heart of "A Bullet For Carlos" takes off from this point.

Giammatteo has crafted a masterful piece of work. The plot is convoluted; filled with tenacity, adventure, violence, love and family tradition and loyalty, good guys, bad guys. The characters become real people that you can relate to; some you root for, others you intensely dislike and some that you can't help but admire and yet despise at the same time.

When I came to the last paragraph I felt justice had been done and I was satisfied. Then I realised that in one sense it had been, but in another, I had actually been led to the edge of a cliff and would have to wait for the next book in the series to find discover "the rest of the story." And I will be first in line to read it.

I so liked Giammatteo`s work that I immediately downloaded "Murder Takes Time" and read it. I'm a diehard fan now. If you like great characters, and a hard edged plot filled action, don't miss this book. It will keep you riveted from beginning to end.

Giacomo Giammatteo wrote one of my favorite books of the year, Murder Takes Time (read it, you won’t regret it), so it’s no surprise that his latest release is also a great book. This is not a continuation of the original series, but it has some parallels that make reading both books worthwhile.

In his new book, Connie Gianelli is a detective on an undercover bust gone bad. Two officers are killed and she is wounded; the press loves her but Internal Affairs has questions. To pacify everyone she is reassigned to a cold case which leads her from New York to Houston. Once there, she stumbles into the orbit of the drug kingpin behind the bad bust in NYC.

Her cold case turns out to be a serial killer still operating in Houston. Meanwhile, facts about the IA investigation keep spilling out of NYC where dirty cops and Italian mobsters compete with drug dealers connected to Houston. Family bonds are tested and ethics are pushed to the limits in pursuit of a cleared record and real justice. Our heroine ends up working with a likable good ol’ boy with a big heart and lots of Texas charm.

From there the story twists and turns until you reach the exciting conclusion. I don’t use that term lightly. In this case, Mr. Giammatteo has drawn such deep and complex characters that when you see where the plot is leading, you start reading faster and faster, hoping our heroine can fend off the forces of evil that you know are descending on her. Like a Hitchcock ending, you find yourself urging the heroine ‘don’t go in there… don’t go in there!’ (Then you look around the room to see if you yelled it out loud.)

Brooklyn Narcotics Detective Connie Giannelli knew she would be a cop since she was twelve years old, when she found out that her Uncle Dominic Mangini was a mobster. She has a love/ hate relationship with Uncle Dom. She loves him because he is family, and he had taught her that nothing in life is more important than la famiglia ... family is everything. But she hates him for who he is and what he does; but most of all for what it does to her reputation as a cop, for putting her in the position of being under suspicion of being a "dirty cop" with family ties to the mob.

Known as "Brooklyn's Toughest Cop," Connie and her narcotics team are number one on successful drug busts. But when an undercover drug bust goes bad and leaves her two partners dead, Connie has to fight to clear her name. Connie is transferred to the homicide unit, and while under the pretense of investigating a cold murder case with ties to Texas, she travels to Houston to investigate the Mexican cartel who is running the drugs and the ruthless drug cartel leader who wants her dead, while tracking down a sadistic serial killer. Will Connie be able to clear her name and bust the drug cartel, or will she fall victim to the drug cartel leader or sadistic serial killer?

A Bullet For Carlos is a gripping crime / mystery thriller that will draw the reader into the story and keep them on the edge with its riveting suspense. In the first book of the Blood Flows South Series, author Giacomo Giammatteo weaves an intriguing tale with multiple subplots that are neatly interwoven, with alternating first and third person narratives, and enough action packed adventure with exciting twists and turns that will keep the reader guessing what will happen next. The story features mob activity, police corruption, drug cartels, and serial killer/murders ... with the reader following Connie Giannelli, an honest cop who tries to clear her name and reputation. I loved the interweaving of the subplots: the reader gets a glimpse into the world of a mob family, and the lengths they will go to protect one of their own; while also delving into the underground drug cartel world filled with its propensity for cruelty and ruthlessness.

With a realistic and diverse cast of complicated characters who leap off the pages; engaging dialogue and riveting interactions; two richly detailed and descriptive settings; and a complex and graphically violent storyline that leaves you wanting more, A Bullet For Carlos is one hell of a thriller that will make your heart race!

At this point I'm beginning to think that I aught to just preemptively mark any book by Giacomo Giammatteo as a five star, 'cause I'm just gonna love it. A Bullet for Carlos was no exception. Mr. Giammatteo somehow makes bad, bad men lovable. I adored Dominic, even though he was unquestionably dangerous and maybe even evil. Though I kind of think the things that made me love him also redeem him a little bit, as well as made me wonder if deeper exploration of other such evil characters (like Carlos) might reveal small redemptive qualities too. It definitely leads a reader to consider whether anyone can really be wholly evil, no matter how bad they appear on the surface or to an outsider. This same theme is further explored when good cops are left having to decide if or when they'll choose to 'cross the line' for the greater good.

This is much more of a police drama than a mafia mystery, but I was THRILLED when Donovan and Mazzetti showed up as side characters. This was the first book by Giammatteo I've read that wasn't part of the Friendship & Honor series and I was really afraid I'd miss Nicky and Frankie enough to sour my experience of reading it. No such thing. Connie and Tip were great characters on their own. If I HAD to choose I'd still take Nicky/Frankie, but I don't have to choose so I'm free to enjoy both in future books. And I plan to.

I also rather enjoyed the cultural differences between New York and Texas. No big deal was made of this, but the small regional quirks were apparent. Different catch phrases, politeness levels, etc. It is yet one more testament of Giammatteo's talent that he can take such small matters and somehow invest them with so much meaning, having a large impact on the feel of the book. It's enviable really. My only complaint, beyond the fact I have to wait for more books, is one I've mentioned before and is JUST a personal preference. The main protagonist was a rapist and there were a few 'tasteful' rape scenes. By which I just mean they weren't gratuitous or titillating in any fashion. They furthered the plot and weren't overly uncomfortable, but they were there. I look forward to the continuation of this series. Definitely worth a read.

I have just finished another gripping read from Giacomo Giammatteo. A Bullet for Carlos is the start of another series and is just as excellent as Murder Takes Time.

For most people, the mafia are faceless thugs with no feelings, but there are family men, who care deeply. Dominic Mangini is one of these. The mob has cost him the love of his life, who won’t marry him because of his connections and won’t marry anyone else because she loves him. When he finds a baby girl, he takes her to Maria, who looks after the child as her own until her death returns the child, Connie, to Dominic’s loving care.

Now thirty, Connie has grown up as an independent woman with a surprising career as an honest cop. She is trying to distance herself from her mob connections, but not from the love of her Uncle Dominic. When a drug bust goes sour, leaving Connie wounded, fighting for her life in an alley with no prospect of police backup, Connie calls for the only kind of help she can get, the mob, who save her.

Unfortunately, the drugs are now missing and she is a suspect, until Uncle Dominic uses his connections to portray her as a hero cop. Instead of suspension, she is now consigned to cold cases and gets sent to Texus on one of them, where she meets the notorious Tip Denton.

Tip has a massive chasm on his shoulder about his absent father. He is loud, brave, pig-headed and tends to over react when dealing with dangerous criminals. Connie must now work with this man when they are thrown together over a series of gruesome murders of women. At the same time, Connie is trying to get evidence against the drug baron Carlos Cortes in connection with the wrecked drug bust for which she is still quietly under suspicion.

What happens next is beyond thrilling. It is edge of seat non-stop reading. The characters are compelling and so real, they leap off the pages at the reader. This is a must buy.

I'd heard so many good things about this book that I was almost wary of reading. My contrary nature means I will look for faults to prove everyone else wrong. Can't help it, it is the Gemini in me.
But I couldn't prove people wrong.
Immaculately written, A Bullet For Carlos kept me intrigued from start to finish.
All the ingredients are here - good cops, bad cops, a serial killer, pretty girls and mobsters. Oh, and an animal or two.
This book is not for the squeamish. Realistic crime scenes pave the path to a mystery. While New York cop Connie Gianelli escapes Brooklyn when a drug bust goes wrong, she replaces drug dealers with a murderer. It doesn't help her reputation that her 'uncles' want to help her clear her name, but family is all important and she gets help whether she wants it or not.
In Texas - clever play on words for the title btw - Gianelli meets Tip, a somewhat maverick cop. While Gianelli seeks clues to solve who is behind the drug bust in New York, a serial killer moves in. Now she has several problems to solve.

Fast paced and gripping, the novel takes a reader through the highs and lows of being a cop as well as how family can sometimes be more of a hindrance than a help. Gianelli is a tough but sympathetic character. Female enough to like a pretty dress but strong enough to handle the men she works with. Tip might like to think he is a womaniser at heart, but truly he often shows a more caring side, especially around his animals.
I am not a huge mystery reader but this is one of the few books where I wanted to go find out what else the author had written at once.

Being a cop and having an uncle who is the head of the mafia doesn’t mix well together. Or does it? A Bullet for Carlos is an Italian family saga as much as it is a thriller.

Remembering the sound advice given to her while being raised by her uncle Dominic, Connie is trying to figure out what or who is good or bad – within the police force as well as outside it. Is family indeed everything?

This book is way more than a ‘who-dun-it’. I love thrillers that give just thát bit more, something that makes you think. The storyline is complex, well thought out with many surprising twists and turns brought with a seasoning of humor. It kept me engaged till the very end and left me wanting more.

Even with the signs Giacomo kindly put in for clarity regarding point of view (first or third person) the shifting was sometimes annoying. Although there is quite a bit of strong language and some graphic descriptions of the murders, it wasn’t disturbing to me. Somehow it fitted within the story telling.

I highly recommend this read! In fact, I can’t wait for the next in the series to come out.

I love novels in a series. With each book you get to know the characters and their world a little better until they become like friends and you can hardly wait until your next visit. With the debut of Jim Giammatteo’s A Bullet for Carlos, I’ve discovered a new friend in Brooklyn cop Connie Gianelli.

Connie has a starkly divided life. A single woman with a job that leaves her no time for a social life, she lives alone with her cat Hotshot, rescued from a crack house. She frets over her loneliness and yearns to marry and raise children. The trouble is, she’s committed to being a cop, a career she chose because of her uncle, mobster Dominic Mangini. She loves him but detests what he does. Both her parents are dead; Dominic is like her father. He has impressed on her the importance of family. “La famiglia é tutto,” he tells her. Family is everything.

Detective Connie Giannelli, a member of the narcotics division, has her life thrown into chaos when an undercover drug bust goes bad. The drugs are missing, her partners are dead and she barely escapes with the help of some “friends.” While trying to prove her innocence she heads south to investigate a cold case homicide.

Multiple storylines are interwoven, alternately told in Connie’s the first person and the third person views of other characters. The writing is smart and crisp. The story is graphically told without being gratuitous, the language used and details of the crimes are appropriate to a mob and drug cartel narrative.

I haven’t read anything Giacomo Giammatteo prior to this book. It’s exciting to find a new “favorite author” and I look forward to reading his other books, both those that are published and those yet to come.

I won this book through Goodreads First Reads giveaway.

A Bullet for Carlos introduces Connie Gianelli as a cop with ties to the mob who walks the right side of the line but is forced to make tough decisions to save her career and her life. Her adversaries are many, ruthless and powerful. Yet her story is not one of a lone heroine, nor will she emerge untouched and unscathed. You will root for her and cry for her. However, this book is not for the squeamish. It also has an open-ended finish that left me desperately wanting the sequel.

This is the first Giacomo Giammatteo book that I've read and I'm impressed. I like mysteries, but this has more than a crime to be solved. The characters are are real and dragged me into their lives. I'm looking forward to the next in this series, but in the mean time I'm going to read "Murder Takes Time".

My Thoughts

After reading the authors debut book in his "Friendship and Honor" series, Murder Takes Time I was delighted to find out that he had penned this first book in his new "Blood Flows South" series, A Bullet for Carlos and even more delighted to snag an ebook copy for my Kindle a few days after it released!

Connie Giannelli is a very likable character, she is a woman of many layers whose one burning ambition in life is to be a "good cop" and at times due to her connection with mobster Dominic Mangini that is an uphill battle as her loyalties are torn between duty and family.

The book begins with a literal "bang" and never slows down. This crime drama is one that is very gritty, very violent in places and has some shockingly graphic descriptions that will make squeamish readers queasy. All of that makes the story feel "real" and gives it the edge that helps make it convincing when the crime scenes are discussed.

This is the type of book that I enjoy sitting down with, it pushes the envelope between fantasy and reality allowing the reader to totally connect with not only the characters but feel like they are part of what is happening as the story unfolds. This is an easy read, it merges several story lines without ever making it too hard to keep track of what is going on and also takes the reader to different physical locations seamlessly as Connie goes from New York to Houston as she works on unraveling the trail that ties an old serial murder case there with the drug bust that cost her partners their lives.

Along the way we are reacquainted with Detective Frankie Donovan and his irascible partner as they are the lead investigators assigned to the undercover drug bust homicides. Connie may have just lucked out but only time will tell as Frankie gets closer and closer to uncovering just where her loyalty lies, with the law she has sworn to uphold or with her family who happens to be on the wrong side of that very legal system.

This is a roller coaster ride of a crime thriller, it will take you places into the evil minds of egotistical people who value nothing but money and the power it gives them so anyone who gets in their way or threatens that power is dealt with harshly.

The graphic descriptions of the crime scenes and victim photos that accompany the Houston serial murder case lend brutal realism as well as shocking insight into just how much we are sheltered by those who uphold the law. To be able to face this type of violence on a day to day basis takes strong will, courage and a dedication that is not found in all of us.

The introduction of a bit of humor, sarcasm and generally out of bounds behavior that is illustrated by the offbeat character portrayed by Houston Police Detective Tip Denton lends a bit of needed relief from the intensity of this book. Not only is Tip someone that is interesting but he has a fondness for animals that totally won me over as soon as I was introduced to his three "ladies". The dogs are not only fun characters in their own right but each of them have a distinct "personality" that the author takes great care to make the reader aware of as he describes their actions and interactions with Tip, Connie and others.

The main villain Carlos Cortes is a suave, cruel, complex character. He has a wife and family and is on one hand a devoted husband and father but on the other hand he is the head of a vicious drug cartel that accepts no excuses as he deals with mistakes by those in his employ with swift deadly force. He also has utter contempt for women and when he finds out that Connie is investigating his enterprise he underestimates her intelligence which is a grave error on his part.

The character that the author calls "Mr Perfect" who finds himself brutally beating, raping and killing young women again and again is not one that would be first choice for the reader to ever suspect of being a murderer. The unveiling of his identity is going to come as quite a surprise to some and not much of one to others as there are clues here and there that lead to suspect his involvement with the heinous crimes.

There is nothing like enjoying the wealth of past experiences that an author uses to create their work. Reading A Bullet for Carlos was like taking a walk through an old neighborhood, the characters were like familiar companions and the stories they shared felt like past memories that were relived in the telling. Not only did this make the reader want to stay immersed in the book but it also allowed it to feel like what was happening could be a headline story on a current news broadcast.

I can honestly say that if like this genre and you do what I did and download the sample chapters of this book you will go right back after reading those chapters and purchase A Bullet for Carlos to read for yourself ASAP.

This was an excellent beginning, I am very much intrigued to see where the next story with Connie and Tip take us!

My Thoughts and Opinion:
First I feel that I need to add a caveat. I started this blog as a personal journal of books read. When I went public with it, I vowed to write honest and credible reviews, no matter how I obtained the books. I still do and will continue to do, even if it is a book being toured with my VT companies, Partners In Crime Tours and Providence Book Promotions. With that said, my review for A Bullet For Carlos.

I am always a bit skeptical and anxious when reading a second novel by an author who's debut novel blew me away like I was with Murder Takes Time. Is the second book going to as good or better or was the first book a "one hit wonder"? Can this male author pull off writing a novel with a female first person narrative? I only had to read a few pages to get my answers. Yes and Yes!

A Bullet For Carlos, the first book in the Blood Flows South Series, introduces us to Connie Giannelli, a gutsy "clean" cop who has some familial ties to the "mob". Trying to clear her name, with a drug bust gone wrong, finds herself in another situation in trying to solve a cold case that involves a serial killer.

Within the first few pages, the story grabs hold of the reader and never lets go, including the ending, since this is the first book in the series. I am anxiously awaiting the next installment. The chapters alternate between characters with mini cliff hangers, which means it's a "one more chapter read", and then realizing one has read many chapters. The action is non stop! There are a several subplots, which the author masterfully interweaves and pulls together in a climaxing manner. Heart pounding suspense!!
There are quite a few characters, but I feel all are needed, to make the story realistic, along with some of the strong language and graphic violence.

Giacomo Giammatteo, has once again, proven that he is a gifted and accomplished story teller and author, unsurpassed!! Put him on your radar, I believe, he is headed to the top of the Best Sellers' charts!!!!

A Bullet For Carlos

I like to pride myself on knowing where a story is going. I can usually tell where a mystery or crime story is going early on. My wife considers that to be the only real proof of my intelligence. “How do you always know?”

“I just do.”

We will be watching a movie or TV show, or reading a book together and she will interrupt with a whisper, “do you have it yet?”

“Yup.”

“How?”

Then I get the chance to do the “elementary, my dear,” and explain it.

I do hold a grudging admiration for authors who can keep me revising my guesses all the way through the book.

Jim fooled me a few times here, maybe more than a few. I was revising my guesses right to the end. So, this round goes to the author.

If you've read Jim's last book, Murder Takes Time, you will find this book has the same feel, same pace and the same style; so it should be comfortable and familiar ground.

A Bullet For Carlos extends the character's lives created in that book without focusing on them because this is really a new story and not just a rehash of the old one.

If you liked the first book this will seem familiar and tied in. If you didn't read the first book this will not seem confusing at all because it is its own story and doesn't depend on the previous one to be enjoyed. Knowledge of the first one will simply make this read a bit more rich in its development.

This series is about crime, cops, the mob, and the new mob encroaching from Mexico. The focus is on the ones who serve and protect, and also those we are protected from.

This story places more weight on a female lead, and there are several strong characters with whom she orbits the central story. Connie, our MC, finds that her police work gone bad in Brooklyn has it's resolution in Houston. Various trails and paths cross while adversaries search each other out. In the end not everyone gets what they may have expected, for better or worse. Jim leaves the door open for the next book which will be,... actually, I don't have any idea what it will be. This part of the story is ended. But the bigger story hasn't ended and obviously can't end here. I'm guessing at least one more and maybe more after that. My guesses are usually pretty good.

Jim constructed a coherent story arch with a few good story-lines embedded within it. You could pull those out and make vignettes, but each is not only its own story, it moves the story central along. That keeps you figuring and guessing about where the story is going to go. A nice weave.

So, good story, good pace, good characters, familiar themes in the author's own style.

This is not a book for kids or the tender hearted in its adult themes.

An enjoyable read, if you don't mind being surprised a little.

Detective Connie Giannelli 19s life has been torn apart several times. First when her mother died and then years later when she found out her Uncle Dominic was in the mob. Her life is about to be shredded again, and this time it could destroy her.

Connie 19s love of family and her badge are both threatened when an undercover drug bust leaves two cops dead and the drugs missing. Internal Affairs is looking for any excuse to take her badge, but she 19s not worried about them finding the missing drugs 14her secrets could prove to be far worse.

Now Connie 19s racing against the clock to figure out who killed her partners and took the drugs 14dirty cops or Uncle Dominic 19s friends. And she has to do it before IA pins the whole damn thing on her.

Dollycas 19s Thoughts

I am so impressed with the strong female character that Giammatteo has written. Connie Giannelli is formidable woman you don 19t want to mess with. Even when sent away from New York to Texas she is determined to get her man or men and bring them to justice. What a crazy life she has had and continues to lead!

He has also written some dynamo supporting characters from her uncles to the cops she works with both in New York and Houston to the cartel in Mexico. They are so fully developed and well described that you feel like you are watching a movie or television drama instead of reading a book.

I reviewed another book my this author last September, Murder Takes Time: Friendship & Honor Series, Book One (Volume 1), so I knew he created fabulous characters. In fact one crosses over to this book. The author tells his story from multiple points of view and while a tad confusing in that book he has ironed out all the issues in this one with clever icons to start each chapter and better transitions.

The story is full of action, suspense, and has engaging dialogue giving you that hold on tight/edge of your seat feeling. The book is graphic and does have some strong language that would be expected in a book of this type.

I am thrilled this book is the first in a series because I want to know more about Connie and her unconventional family and the choices she makes going forward. I hated to see this book end. I anxiously await A Bullet For Dominic. Murder Has Consequences (Friendship & Honor, Book 2) is available now in E-book (Kindle) format. Giacomo Giammatteo is definitely an author to watch. I expect to see his books on bestseller lists everywhere very soon!

A Bullet for Carlos by Giacoma Giammatteo I received a free kindle copy of A Bullet for Carlos by Giacoma Giammatteo, published by Inferno Publishing Company in an Amazon promotion in exchange for a fair review. I gave it five stars. It kept me up reading & was a fast paced suspense-thriller. There were many disgustingly brutal scenes but it advanced the storyline."The bigger problem was getting Maria to accept the baby and then making sure no one ever told the truth. That was the difficult one. Truth had a way of creeping through cracks and oozing to the top, no matter how deep it was buried. He knew he could trust Zeppe, and he could trust Maria...but something in his gut ate at him. This would take careful planning."Thirty years later Connie Gianelli was a tough cop. "There was a joke in the department about me being more guy than girl because of my deep voice. My voice was deep, deeper than most guys, but the guy/girl confusion stopped there. I did have a nice ass." Later her Lieutenant told her to 'watch her ass.' She replied: "'Everyone else watches it. Guess I should too.'"Connie was talking about death. "I don’t know why death scared me. Dominic always told me that Mom was in a place where nothing went wrong, and she’d never be sick. I dreamed of joining her sometimes, comforted by thoughts of happiness, and eating pasta all day without gaining weight. Damn, that would be nice." Connie was shot & her Uncle Dominic sent men to save her. He visited her in the hospital. This exchange took place as he got ready to leave. "I know all about evil men and ‘little kingdoms,’ Zio.”  Dominic’s eyes turned to ice. He stared for what seemed like an hour. “Don’t hate me for too long, Concetta. Hate is a big hill to climb.” He left without another word.  Now I knew why people were so scared of Dominic. Those eyes…"Dominic is trying to get information from a man he believes knew who ordered the New York cops killed when Connie was shot. "The man screamed loud enough to make Mazza take a step back.  “I wonder if that was in Spanish or English,” Mazza said.  “I have heard screams in many languages,” Dominic said. “They all sound the same.”Link to purchase: http://www.amazon.com/Bullet-Carlos-C...

I have been reading so many tremendous mystery/suspense/thrillers lately and I am ecstatic to add A Bullet for Carlos to the awesome list!! I couldn't be more pleased. The characters were very well stereo typed in an Italian-esque/ Brooklyn-esque manner and to my delight, the book included some lines written in Italian. I love the Italian language and Italian food! And for the New York mobsters, family played a huge role in the storyline and plot. The threat to Connie's name and career began in Brooklyn when a drug bust went totally wrong and drugs came up missing.

To remove her from a direct line of fire with the IA investigators, Connie is transferred to Homicide and assigned cold cases for review and ultimately she travels to Houston Texas to partner with Tip Denton, a smart mouthed, good old boy cop who is one of the best officers Texas has to offer, but also a flawed detective--likes his women and his liquor....and also his three dogs.

It's there in Houston, Connie gets a very real encounter with another "family"--this one Mean and Mexican...the one that caused the problems back in Brooklyn. Now the novel involves two investigations.
Connie wants nothing more than to clear her name and return to her beloved Brooklyn. She also wants to resolve the case of the individual who removes the lips of his female victims, then severely beats, and rapes them. The bodies are piling up and Connie is the target of two of society's career criminals! It becomes increasingly important to get these cases resolved and resolved NOW.

This novel was one of those that you got to a certain point and your brain said, quite loudly, "Continue to read...all night if you must...just do it!" And I did. It was a great book to escape in. My favorite character was Flash and I am so glad, I am not a cop! Not the life for wussy me, but I sure enjoy a good
cop story! Looking forward to next year's release, A Bullet for Dominic!
5 winks!
YES, I SAID 5 ; ) ...my scariness meter ran at 9 due to the gruesome murders and mob punishments. Language was very strong too!

Thirty years ago, after killing someone, mobsters Dominic and Zeppe discover a baby in the apartment of the deceased. They can't leave her behind so they give her to the love of Dominic's life, Maria, who raises the baby as her own. Maria, though, doesn't approve of what Dominic does for a living so never lets their relationship progress passed friendship. Thirty years later, we discover that the baby has become Connie Gianelli, an undercover cop.

After a drug bust goes bad, Connie's two partners get killed, the drugs disappear, Connie is shot in the leg and she is suspected of being a dirty cop. Rather than taking the early retirement she is offered, she is transferred to another precinct where she starts investigating a cold case, the murder of a woman who was beaten and had her lips cut off. This leads her to Houston as they also had victims with the same MO. She uses these murders as an excuse to go to Houston to investigate her own case since it has ties to there.

Frankie Donovan, who we met in Murder Takes Time (which I enjoyed), is back ... he and his partner are investigating Connie's case in New York to discover whether she is a dirty cop or not. Connie doesn't trust a lot of people but Uncle Dominic vouches for Frankie, who is a good cop.

Like Murder Takes Time, I really enjoyed this book. I liked the writing style and it kept me wanting to read more. I liked the characters. Despite her toughness, I liked Connie ... she's torn between being a good cop while being true to her mobster family. Tip, Connie's partner in Houston, is a hoot ... he likes to look at women's butts and he's not afraid to comment on them, which gets him in trouble. Plus, he's a dog lover ... he has three of them.

I'd recommend this book and I look forward to the next one in the series.

Giacomo Giammatteo has more than one storyline going to keep you on your toes and it worked for me. I traveled from New York to Texas with Connie on her quest to solve a cold murder case and to find Carlos and bring him to justice. I am watching a Criminal Minds episode that has a similar murder plot, very cool.

With Connie being under investigation by Internal Affairs because of a drug bust gone bad, the murder of a couple cops and missing drugs, she must find the answers herself. It doesn’t help that her Uncle Dominic is in the mob.

When all the clues fall into place for me, I was a little disappointed that they didn’t for Connie. I felt she would have known and I kept waiting for her to say AHA. But it all works out in the end.

I love dogs and am always happy when they are part of the novel. Characters seem easier to relate to and become more real. They win me over when they love them too.

“Some people believe that God doesn’t let dogs in heaven, but Tip knew differently. God wouldn’t make something so loving and so perfect only to abandon them at the end.”

I love this quote.

To sum it up, I love mysteries and thrillers and this is one I would highly recommend. Give me some mob guys, some drugs and a little murder and I am in heaven. The twists and turns kept me on my toes as I tried to figure out what would happen next.

I won this signed, first edition paperback in a giveaway from Giacomo Giammatteo.

Thanks so much, Giacomo. I look forward to reading more of your work.

Once again, I find myself in awe of Giammatteo’s talent. All of his novels are so descriptive and imaginative. This is a crime novel of the highest caliber and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I thought Connie was a great protagonist. She’s strong, smart, capable, and able to keep up with the boys. Best of all, she’s not Superwoman and has flaws. She also lives her life with shades of grey. The main theme in this novel is one of family. Connie is torn between the love she holds for her uncles Dominic and Zeppe and the knowledge they are mobsters. This conflict divides her loyalties between her family and her job as a police officer. The rest of the characters introduced in this novel, whether they are on the side of the law or not, are all vivid and complex. Through multiple perspectives we are able to learn what drives them and what they desire.

Even though this is a good book, I must warn that it’s not for the faint-hearted. There are quite a few graphic descriptions and sometimes they are hard to read. However, they just stress the heinousness of the crimes and are unflinchingly brutal.

Giammatteo is an amazing new addition to the crime novel genre. He has written another excellent novel and I’m very excited to see where this series leads. I highly recommend this novel along with Giammatteo’s other book Murder Takes Time.

I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Detective Connie Giannelli has a problem...a huge problem. While working undercover on a drug bust, two of her partners are killed and the drugs go missing. Internal Affairs immediately suspects her and investigates. It doesn't help that her uncle is a mobster.

Connie finds herself placed on assignment checking out cold cases. She winds up in Houston on the trail of a serial killer. At the same time, she's getting closer to learning who is really behind the missing drugs - dirty cops or her mobster uncle? She teams up with a Houston detective and it's a race against time to stop a serial killer before anymore innocent people are killed.

Talk about an action-packed book! This one has it all - great characters, edge-of-your-seat drama and nail-biting situations. I was captivated from page one. I could not put this book down. It's the first in a series by this author and the first book I've read by this author - it definitely won't be my last!

Warning: There is some graphic violence and foul language, which was story appropriate.

FTC Disclosure: The author provided me with a copy of this book for the blog tour. This did not influence my thoughts and opinions in any way. All opinions expressed are my own.

Fun, enjoyable read. First book in a series. Great chemistry between the Tip & Connie. She a cop in trouble in New York City. Her family is organized crime. Her bosses think she's "dirty," and after a drug deal goes bad, IA wants her badge. Demoted to "Cold cases" she wangles travel on a Cold case murder to check on a similar crime in Houston. The real reason she's going is to investigate the drug lord supplying the drugs in the bad bust that got her partners killed. She on a mission.
In Houston, they pair her with Tip because he's a loose-cannon. Tip is in political trouble for his sexist comments in Houston. His bosses think putting him on a cold case with a NYC cop will keep him from getting into more trouble. DUH??
Once in Houston, another murder occurs similar to their cold cases. Tip & Cinnie's cases is no longer cold, which put them front and center in the action, and there's plenty of that.
I'm looking forward to reading more books in the series.

interesting story line. Some language wasn't what I usually read but wasn't over the top.
The characters will continue on into other books. Interesting how a criminal mind has a soft spot for a baby then caring for them into adulthood.... police force from New York and Houston are the justice but dirty cops that mix with mob/mafia in illegal drugs n who is the most powerful. The story has the reader guessing who "Mr Perfect" is, n what is his motive picking women then brutally kill n rapes them. Revenge on kills Tips dogs was so sad, the writer certainly portrayed the emotions involved here. There maybe heroes in the end getting the badies but there is a lot of pressure on Julie who did the research n got the info for the detectives. crime story for you to think about.

This is the second book by Giacomo Giammatteo that I have read. The story is wonderful. The characters are well drawn and fully developed which is a skill that Giammatteo has master and shows in everything I have read by him.

This is a story of loyalty and family. Two themes that permeate this writer books. I was drawn in from the first pages and stayed up reading late into the night to finish the book because I couldn't bear to put it down.

In the story the main character is a female cop who was raised by her mob boss "uncle". Loyalty to family and loyalty to her job are in conflict through out the story and the end leaves you wondering if there will be a sequel. Lets hope we see more of these characters.

This is the first book I've read by Giacomo Giammatteo and I was quite taken with it. Although violence and/or is a part of the book are certainly part of the book, it never felt over the top (i.e. just for shock value). Detective Connie Giannelli knew from an early age that she wanted to be a police officer, even though some of her closest friends and family are involved in the mob. Between attempting to clear her name in Brooklyn after she was involved in a criminal action where a drug shipment disappeared and trying to track down a serial murderer, there was not much down time in this story. It's pretty much an adrenalin rush throughout. I'm pretty sure I'll try the next book in the series.
