I'll start off with the one good thing about this book: it had the potential to be a good book. So I guess I'm giving it two stars for what could have been.

Now for the bad...and there was a lot of it. So much so that I had to skim through the last few chapters for a quick finish because I couldn't take it anymore.

The characters were totally odd. They were like robots or something. They didn't react in situations as one would normally expect. For instance the main girl Julie or Julia or whatever her name is was almost raped by some guy. Robert, the main dude, saved her. And then the would be rapist and his friends beat up on Robert and smash a bottle over his head knocking him out cold then dragged Julie away so she couldn't help him. Instead of doing something productive like kneeing the guy in the balls and calling the police she just cries when they take her home. And then wonders for a couple of days what happened to Robert and never once picked up the phone and called someone. Then when she tells her parents about almost getting raped and that Robert, the boy from the wrong side of the tracks, was the one to save her, they are more worried about her hanging out with him than they are about her getting sexually assaulted. And nothing ever happened to the kid that tried to rape her. No charges were filed and her parents pretty much shrugged their shoulders about it. Not only that, her father is a judge therefore he should know the law and had that kid snapped up.

Julie annoyed me. Pretty much everything about her annoyed me.

Then there was Robert. He was supposed to be a bad boy. He was the leader of a gang. Huge eye roll here. It did not make sense to me. He didn't had the personality of a gang leader. He has killed someone, has stolen cars, went to jail, deals drugs, blah blah blah. And somehow lands in a prep academy and plays the roll of a dutiful student? Say what? It's just all very unbelievable to me. If you're the leader in a gang and you're pushing drugs, guns. and sex, the chances of you having time for school are slim and none. Especially when they make him this quintessential bad boy with a heart of gold. His whole character was unrealistic.

Actually this whole book was unrealistic to me but it did make me laugh out loud a few times. Not because there was humor in it but because the dialogue was cringe-worthy. Some of the characters said the most ridiculous crap that you just stare and the pages and think "who says shit like that?"

All in all I was bored. And I couldn't get over how weird the characters were. They were just too abnormal that I couldn't connect to them.

Julie and her friends see the hot new student, Robert. It isn’t long until they discover he is just a student he is a student from the bad side of town. Julie is intrigued and attracted to this bad boy. Robert finds he is drawn to Julie too. When Julie tries to befriend Robert he is skeptical of her motives, but Julie will not give up. The two become close and Julie learns all the Roberts dirty secrets and what he is ashamed of. As these two friends learn more and grow closer feelings turn to love. Can the love flourish between this Romeo and Juliet or will their different worlds crush it?

I really got sucked into this story. The drama mixed with the love story was wonderfully woven. I felt that for a Romeo and Juliet like story this was unique yet realistic. The conflict between the two social classes was done well. I also loved the depth of the characters. None of the characters, even the supporting ones, were flat. They all had multiple facets to their life. This was one of the best parts of this book. The only complaint I had was the way it was written. I know there is a bit of a warning at the beginning of the book regarding the storytelling method. It was a bit tough at the beginning and a few times throughout the story I wasn’t sure who was speaking and got a little lost, but once you over come those little bumps you find yourself drawn into the story and can’t help but want to read the whole trilogy in one sitting. Overall, I felt this was a good novel that definitely surprised me. When you read the first book you will definitely want to go on to the rest of the trilogy. I know I am anxious to read the next two books.

So once again I was stuck for choice for what book to read next so I random number generated (RNG) it and got this, #22, which just shows you how old it is (2012).
I'm hoping my tastes haven't changed that much that I won't like it but we'll see what happens.
--------------------------------------------------

Okay, I'm going to DNF this at 35%. It wasn't that bad a story but as I mentioned in my status update, I can't help but picture Robert/Bob as some sort of Mexican thug/drug lord/drug runner with how he talks. I know he's from the wrong side of town but I'm sure they don't necessarily have to talk like he was doing. Then the fact he's in a gang...meh.

The main reason I'm not going to finish this is because I got a little bored. It was a bit too predictable. Bad boy, good girl. Meet, fall in love. Live happily ever after. Now if it had been the other way around; bad girl, good guy...then I might have stuck around for completion because I haven't read that situation often and I find it much more intriguing.

The characters were also a little strange in their actions. Stuff happened that a normal person would freak out about and instead our characters just sort of got on with life as if nothing had happened.

My taste in books has changed a fair bit in the three years since I downloaded this, when I downloaded almost everything that was free in the romance category.

I'm now going to go read something that I've paid for and actively sought out.

Not necessarily a bad book just not to my tastes.

I had a chance to read an ARC of this story and I really enjoyed it. The main characters are 18-ish so that's why I say it borders a YA/Adult contemporary for me.

As the title suggests, the hero and heroine, Robert and Julie, do spend a lot of time dancing around each other. But it's entertaining to read. In some places, it almost feel like a soap opera and well, I quite enjoyed those. Ha, so sue me. There was always some drama going on or some new obstacle in this pair's way. Julie I liked, but Robert, loved that guy. He's thrown some insurmountable circumstances to overcome, but he manages a way around it all quite nicely. While he may be the 'bad boy', he still has a heart of gold. The author did a nice job expressing that while we may not all travel the same paths in life, we still are essentially the same people and deserve happiness alike.

She did leave the ending a bit open for the next book. Of course that just means I'll have to wait for the next book to release so I can find out what's going to happen to this pair. Can they actually stay together? Well, I have to find out. So, I'll be reading the next.
