Violento, primitivo, crudele in Claudelle ritorna il mondo dei Poveri bianchi del Sud, tipico di quella letteratura sociale americana che ebbe in Caldwell uno dei suoi massimi esponenti. Il dramma della protagonista, che trae origine da una cocente delusione sentimentale, si svolge e precipita in un clima di passioni esasperate, talvolta grottesche. L’ignoranza, la debolezza, la fondamentale ingenuità spingono la ribellione di Claudelle a conseguenze tragiche, da cui né la madre, prigioniera ella stessa di una rabbiosa sensualità, né il padre, vittima rassegnata, sapranno proteggerla

Take this longing
La giovane Claudelle riceve una lettera dal suo amato lontano attraverso la quale viene lasciata. Come è mai possibile, visto che la amava tanto? Lo sconcerto iniziale e l'incredulità devono lasciare il campo alle parole lette sulla lettera. Il dolore si dilegua attraverso un cambiamento: si darà a tutti, purché le facciano regali. I sentimenti non contano, il corpo è un accessorio, si deve andare avanti, la sua è una bellezza spezzata. Questa scelta cambierà l'assetto morale dell'intera comunità e sconvolgerà gli equilibri familiari dell'intero paese: il desiderio lascivo, tema della canzone di Leonard Cohen con cui ho aperto la recensione, sarà il detonatore di una violenza che sonnecchiava in questo frammento di campagna del sud.
La storia è, però, un trittico perché alla figura di Claudelle si associano i genitori: il padre uomo morigerato e lavoratore onesto e la madre, una donna infelice e svilita dalla povertà.
Tanto Sud in questo romanzo di Caldwell, quel sud che amo per le ambientazioni suggestive che mi ricordano quei vecchi film con Paul Newman: campagna, terra, sudore, cotone, polvere, caldo, silenzi nei discorsi e... Una pistola, come nei migliori racconti di Čhecov, e sappiamo tutti cosa diceva lo scrittore russo: se in un racconto compare una pistola, bisogna che si spari.
P.s. Devo essere onesta: non so se è da tre o quattro stelle, ha prevalso la scelta premiante solo perché, in una Bologna tristemente autunnale, è stato uno dei pochi elementi a ricordarmi che esistono l'estate e anche il caldo.

Una giovane donna delusa dal suo grande amore, una mamma frustrata e arrivista, un padre ingenuo e una società patriarcale e materialista. Aggiungeteci una prosa alquanto banale ma dal ritmo incalzante ed avrete gli ingredienti di Claudelle, un romanzo che si fa leggere in poche ore. Durante la lettura mi si sono affollate nella mente tante domande a cui non sono riuscita a dare una risposta. La superficialità dei personaggi deve essere intesa come una critica al loro modo di vedere il mondo oppure è un risultato involontario dell'autore? E le scene da teatrino che si ripetono in maniera simile per tutta la lunghezza del romanzo è stata una scelta consapevole o puro caso?
Insomma, se l'intento di Caldwell era quello di scrivere un romanzo tragicomico, potrebbe esserci riuscito.

Claudelle è la storia di una ragazza di campagna, figlia di contadini poveri,
che riceve una delusione d'amore tanto grande e dolorosa, da perdersi completamente.
La protagonista inizia a sfruttare gli uomini, per ottenere tutto ciò che vuole soldi e regali, offrendo in dono il proprio corpo.
Del resto, la madre non le ha dato degli ottimi consigli, dopo la delusione d'amore ricevuta.
Erskine Caldwell utilizza uno stile secco e asciutto, la lettura è piacevole, anche se può rivelarsi, forse troppo ridotta all' osso. Ovviamente, non si cade mai sull'esplicito. Non si raccontano mai nel dettaglio i rapporti sessuali, ma, se ne fa sempre un chiaro riferimento.
La sessualità di Claudelle viene raccontata dal narratore, senza esprimere dei giudizi, anche se, sul finale tragico e disperato, possiamo cogliere in Erskine Caldwell una denuncia sociale, verso il bigottismo cattolico dell' epoca.
È un bel libro perché l' autore non si espone, non spiega e non prende una posizione né positiva né negativa su Claudelle, ma lascia che gli eventi della storia ci inducano a provare empatia per lei, per la povera Claudelle tanto sciagurata e sventurata. Nel complesso la lettura è stata appagante e piacevole, anche se, la prosa è molto risicata, da non lasciarmi moltissimo, rispetto ad altre letture di questo genere, mi torna in mente il pieno coinvolgimento struggente che ho provato per "Tess D'urbenville" di Thomas Hardy.

I frankly don’t know how to write a better summation/review of this novel than I found in the back half of the dust jacket – and so, I’ll go with it.

Here is the small-time landowner: lazy, bullying, but lonely for a woman’s step in his house; and the other men, hungry for the sight of a young girl in her springtime. The earthy humor, the streak of violence always close to the surface, the careful ways of a man with his money: all the traits of back-country America are dramatized with gusto and understanding in this lusty tale of a woman scorned.”

I read the English version of this book, Claudelle. I was ready to give it 4 stars until I reached the Romeo and Juliet style ending. The writing is colorful, but the premise is rather far fetched. After being jilted by her fiance, Claudette turns into a nymphomaniac, tease and "country whore." She has sex with practically every man in town, demanding gifts and leaving a wake of destruction.

Having read many Caldwell books over the years, I can say that this is a 'bulk standard' Caldwell book. Here the focus of the book is a lady, Claudelle, who is a spurned lover and her reaction to being rejected in love.
I say that this novel is a 'bulk standard Caldwell book' because yet again, Caldwell focuses on the demise of the family unit, the loose and easy going daughter with very loose morals AND, yes, true to form there is a priest mixed up in the story as well. The only thing that is missing from this story is alcohol and alcoholism. This is the main theme of so many of his works such as Journeyman, Tobacco Road, Gods Little Acre and so many more.
Caldwell was writing around the time of Steinbeck, and you can see why Steinbeck has flourished so much more, but then again both writers are very similar in their style and works. Most notably, Cannery Row by Steinbeck, you could easily be fooled into thinking that this was a Caldwell Book.

Interesting portrait of a young woman growing up on a sharecropper tenant farm in the Piedmont of Smyrna County Georgia. Tension and conflict arise when her mother and father have different ambitions and ideas about Claudelle’s future and whether or not it’s apropos to employ her feminine wiles to achieve her goals.

Affrettatissimo e scontatissimo, con un plot sempre uguale a sé stesso e un'introspezione psicologica da far ridere i polli. Per non parlare del finale...Leggerlo è stato un vero e proprio spreco di tempo.
