This book has been sitting on my to-read shelf for far too long. OK, so I read it when it was originally published in Danish years ago, so maybe that´s why this Swedish edition got stuck in readers limbo ...

Anyway, my loss, as this is a little gem. Rehr has in the past created both realistic autobiographical comics and far out artistic experiments on the fringe of what can be said to be a visual narrative. In this book, he combines both of these forms of expressions, showing on the surface (no pun intended) a male swimmer swimming through water, air and even earth, superimposed with panels of a young boy doing mundane, everyday things. After a while these two scenarios intersect and it becomes obvious that it is an allegorical story about a father and son relationship.

Add to this a third layer of seemingly autobiographical reminiscences of growing up, with images that looks like they are redrawn photos and, to me at least, this becomes a nearly perfect combination of words and images. Beautifully rendered, intelligently told and as a whole evocative on an emotional level.

A great little graphic novel. A quick read that repays a rereading or two.

Fina illustrationer men lite för mycket av handlingen faller bort i abstraktioner.

''Swim!'' (that's what I'll do.)

I'll keep on swimming, beyond the realms of hell and
nothing but blissful, and twisted, anxious, demonic fires,
blue, black, blue, black shadows and red fire.

I'll swim until there is nothing left but sleep.
I'll read this sometime when life is hard.
Which means I should read it everyday.

And out of all the beautiful illustrations;
the one with the family and the octopus balloon was the best.
It was quite charming and interesting, the different layers.

It was dark, blue, moving, emotional and drifitng, like the sea.
Deep like the ocean, poetry inside waves and the water.

I loved this so much, Thank you Henrik,
I was truly inspired and amazed.
