After a string of wins, Trish breaks her arm, and since the horse Trish and her father have entered in both the Santa Anita Derby and the Kentucky Derby won't tolerate another rider, it seems that they're going to miss the greatest opportunity of their lives.

Reading these books makes me want to attend a horse race. Reading about the freezing weather in Vancouver, WA makes me appreciate my prepared for weather home in Wisconsin! And that I don't have to do chores outdoors.

This is the 2nd book I've read in the series. Trish has been dreaming of riding in the Santa Anita Derby, but troubles with Spitfire, her father's illness, and her accident may keep them away from the race and her dream of eventually riding in the Kentucky Derby.
I had read this before, but didn't remember the details. It was worth reading again.
In this story 16-year old Tricia Evanston is riding as a jockey at the Portland Meadows racetrack in Oregon. Her dad, Hal, had been training horses but now has lung cancer and the family is trying to get him to eat as much as possible. He's mentioned in the prayers for healing at church, which embarrasses Tricia. Her mom, Marge, doesn't want Tricia racing because she might get hurt. Her brother, David, echos their mom's concerns. The horse's name is Spitfire, Tricia's the only one he'll allow to ride him. Miss Tee is a young 3 month old horse that belongs to Tricia because she was born on Tricia's birthday & was a gift from her father. They're getting ready to go to the Kentucky Dirby with Spitfire.
I enjoyed this series very much. A girl who lives on a horse farm in Oregon wants to be a jockey. Finally, her dream is coming true. Just as it has come true, her father dies of cancer. After this, she learns to cope with his death by turning to God. The one thing I did not appreciate about this book was the whole boyfriend/girlfriend thing throughout the series. But, overall, I definately enjoyed them.
