Even by manga standards, this title is wonderfully odd. Lucius Modestus is an architect in the time of Emperor Hadrian specializing in public baths. When submerged in a bath, he somehow travels through time and space to emerge from a bath in modern day Japan. He notes the features of Japanese baths and bathhouses, and incorporates them into his own designs to great success upon returning to ancient Rome. Really. And it's fascinating. The formula never seems to get old. Mari Yamazaki's art is excellent, and she's clearly done her homework. There is a huge amount of attention to detail in this book, part of what makes it so good. The theme is unusual, but presented with such love and skill that it's difficult to resist this book's charms.

Beh, visto che il film uscirà a giugno per quelli della Tucker Film (Friulians do it better!!) è il caso di mettersi finalmente a leggere tutta la serie. Avevo anche cominciato ma poi, con la scusa che i volumetti uscivano ogni morte di papa mi ero anche dimenticata di quello che stava succedendo. Così...
Anche se di solito leggo solo è unicamente shojo, ogni tanto mi metto a leggere qualcosa di diverso. E Thermæ Romæ mi ispirava soprattutto per l'ambientazione italiana. Da quello che io ho capito del manga, e su questo si può dibattere, per essere grande Roma ha avuto bisogno del Giappone. Perché senza le straordinarie invenzioni che Lucio riporta dalla terra degli uomini dalla faccia piatta, Roma non avrebbe potuto diventare ciò che è diventata.
Una volta fatta pace con questo il manga fila che è una meraviglia.

Je ne suis pas fana de mangas, en règle générale, mais celui-ci m'a vraiment séduite par l'originalité de son sujet !!
En plus de nous faire passer un bon et drôle moment, l'auteure nous offre aussi quelques "leçons" sur le thème des bains de l'Antiquité à nos jours.
Beaucoup d'éléments séduise l'"historienne de l'art" que j'ai été, étudiante, et j'ai enfin trouvé un manga que je ne trouve pas "nian-nian" ou violent !
Le tome 2 vient d'arriver dans ma pal, et je me réjouis d'avance de cette lecture ;) (en espérant cependant que le sujet ne s'épuise pas, et que l'auteure parvienne à se renouveler !)

Bath architect and engineer Lucius Modestus finds himself transported nearly 2000 years into the future after falling in a public bath, and is inspired by modern Japan to solve the bath problems he faces in his Ancient Rome. This becomes a recurring theme but given how each chapter approaches a different subject, it never really gets stale. In the end I learnt a lot about these 2 bathing cultures, as well as about the Roman Empire in general.
For a comedy manga, the art style is very good, the semi-realism reflects very well the different ethnicities of the characters and the backgrounds are also quite detailed. Whether you want to learn more about history, bathing, want to laugh, or just look at underdressed people bathing, I really recommend this series.

Roma, 128 d.C., Lucio è un architetto che si vede respingere un progetto per la costruzione di uno stabilimento termale, visto che la sua idea viene bollata come "fin troppo antiquata" per poter essere apprezzata a Roma, una città in costante evoluzione. Deluso da questo giudizio e rimasto senza un lavoro, Lucio decide di seguire il consiglio di un amico e di andare a rilassarsi proprio alle terme. Ma ecco il colpo di scena: viene risucchiato all'interno di un buco sul fondo della vasca e si ritrova in un bagno pubblico...in Giappone. In epoca moderna.
Questo è solo il primo dei "viaggi" che Lucio si troverà a fare nella terra degli "uomini dalla faccia piatta", dove si troverà di fronte, suo malgrado, a tecnologie e sistemi decisamente più evoluti rispetto a quelli dell'Antica Roma. Comunicare con gli abitanti del posto è ovviamente impossibile, però, grazie alla sua innata curiosità, il nostro architetto riesce a cogliere sempre concetti molto interessanti e a replicarli, per quanto possibile, nella sua epoca - concetti legati non solo all'ingegneria idrica, ma anche destinati a migliorare l'esperienza stessa del bagno alle terme. Queste sue innovazioni arrivano persino all'orecchio dell'imperatore Adriano, che decide di richiedere i suoi servizi, non solo all'interno della sua villa a Tivoli, ma anche nel corso di una campagna militare. Anche se questo successo a livello lavorativo, manderà in frantumi la sua vita privata...
Non so perché ci ho messo tanto a iniziare questo manga, mistero della fede. Questo primo volume mi è piaciuto un sacco e Lucio è davvero un ottimo protagonista (il suo shock ad ogni viaggio e ad ogni scoperta era troppo spassoso). Questa serie mette a confronto due culture e due epoche che sono molto diverse, ma che hanno anche diversi valori in comune. A partire dall'amore per le terme/i bagni e per tutto quello collegato a questa esperienza. Daje col secondo volume!

Awalnya saya memberikan tag no romance. No romance! Soalnya dulu hanya baca buku awal dan rasanya memang tidak fokus ke sana (tokoh utama malah ditinggal istrinya).
Tapi ternyata saat sudah baca sampai tamat... :>>>
Lalu para komentator mengatakan itu representasi kehidupan mangaka sendiri (saya tidak tahu karena tidak baca bagian mangaka corner-nya).

Non sono un lettore di manga, ma da appassionato di storia romana e di termalismo, non potevo evitare questa lettura. Una nicchia nella quale mi sono ritrovato con piacere, sollevata da un umorismo che in più occasioni mi ha strappato sorrisi. Decisamente una piacevole scoperta - ho già ordinato le due uscite successive.

Me gusta mucho que la autora hable sobre sus experiencias en termas de todo el mundo, siempre se aprende algo nuevo. Por otra parte, los constantes latinismos en la traducción llegan a ser un coñazo.

Thermae Romae est un des mangas les plus brillants que vous lirez.
C’est un trésor d’humour donc chaque dessin est remarquablement soigné. Les dialogues nous font passer de la fascination au fou rire en quelques secondes. Lucius devient un ami dont on reconnait les mimiques par cœur. Et quand on pense qu’il ne peut plus nous surprendre, il se réinvente !
Lisez le, réclamez le à votre bibliothèque, offre le à votre prof de latin, vite !
Thermae Romae est un des mangas les plus brillants que vous lirez.

上課上到羅馬文化，提到這本書和同名的電影。坐在講台正前方的清秀男孩突然抬起頭對我說，老師，我有這套漫畫，你要看嗎？
嗯嗯！好啊！知道這本書也是幾年前的一名學生，斷斷續續看到第四集，正好現在出齊了，也該把它看「完」才是。結果到了下次上課，這名小男生真的帶書來了，還貼心地問我要不要複習前面，就這樣看了後面忘了前面的我，終於一口氣把六本漫畫給一起看完了。
故事的大綱是公元130左右，羅馬帝國哈德良皇帝在位時，浴場工程師路西斯在工作瓶頸時，一次偶然在浴池水中滑倒，神奇地到了現代的日本，學到了日本的泡澡文化後，一點一點帶回他的時代，重新創造羅馬浴場的巔峰。
穿越劇的魅力就在以今日之姿而指導昨日之時，許多現代的日本澡堂文化竟然成為羅馬的時興玩意兒，例如大理石滑水道、彈珠汽水、私人家居木頭浴缸、溫泉蛋……明明知道胡說八道，但因為又佐以歷史人物，像哈德良、雷比達，不用那麼在乎真假，純娛樂就是啦！
故事的最後，路西斯在日本找到一位衷情於古羅馬的年輕女子，有情人穿越時空，在羅馬團圓，成就了愛情。

I remember the first time I've read this book in 2009.
It was new and there was only one book in the series, and I just loved how funny and informative the comic was. (oh and the cover design. I LOVE this simple yet funny cover design.)
....I wish this series hasn't changed...
the more the story progress, the more Lucius stays at the same location in Japan, and I just hated the love interest.
But this first book in the series is simple and fun to read.

素晴らしく面白くて細かい。アートがすごい、明らかに話やアートや古代ローマ人のくせよくリサーチした。阿部寛俳優の映画バージョン大好きだったけどこれの方好きかも。すごい気になる！
Very funny and impressively detailed. The setting, architecture, mannerisms of ancient Romans and everything surrounding the storyline is clearly researched with great care. The statuesque art style is a really strong visual choice. I loved the Abe Hiroshi movie version, but I think I like this even better. Extremely interested to read more.

An architect from the Roman empire got thru some random portal and come to the current day Japan. He got inspired by what he saw in the Japanese modern-day bathhouse and implement it to his time when he's back. Well, at first, it was a kinda innovative type of story but then the story becomes repetitive and the book lost my interest.

Si l'idée de départ est des plus originales, riches en informations tant sur les thermes romains que sur la culture des bains au Japon, l'histoire devient quelque peu répétitive à la longue, bains, voyage au Japon, découverte de la situation locale et adaptation dans le monde romain.
L'œuvre ne manque pas d'intérêt mais n'échappe à quelques clichés, ni à quelques erreurs historiques.

So fun revisiting this series after a trip to Italy.
I first picked up this manga years ago when I came across it at a bookstore (back in Feb 2010). So glad I decided to buy it, fun seeing similarities between Ancient Rome and modern Japan’s public baths.
