בשנת 1998 הרצה מאיר שלו סדרה של הרצאות באוניברסיטת תל - אביב. הסדרה, שמשכה קהל רב, עסקה בכתיבתם האוטוביוגרפית של סופרים לילדים, בדמות ההורה, המורה, האח והאחות, באגדות ילדים, וביחסי הסופר, המספר והקורא בספרים שונים, ביניהם:" "עיר קטנה ואנשים בה מעט" של נחום גוטמן, "הנבחר" של תומאס מאן, "נפשות מתות" של גוגול, "פרקי שיר השירים" של שלום עליכם, "כאשר הייתי נער קטן" של אריך קסטנר, "סיפור אמנון ותמר, "קורות טום ג'ונס" של הנרי פילדינג ועוד. כמו קובץ השיחות הקודם של מאיר שלו - "בעיקר על אהבה" - גם זה אינו מחקר בספרות. זוהי התרשמותו של קורא, שעוסק גם בכתיבה.

About the author

Meir Shalev (Hebrew: מאיר שלו) was one of Israel’s most celebrated novelists. He received many awards for his work, including the National Jewish Book Award and Israel’s Brenner Prize, both for A Pigeon and a Boy.

A columnist for the Israeli daily Yedioth Ahronoth, Shalev lived in Jerusalem and in northern Israel with his wife and children.

Meir reads several lectures about some interesting ideas but he's doing it in such a dry & uninteresting way that all i wanted was to fall asleep

This book is based on 6 conversations/lectures that Shalev gave about literature.
The themes are quite variegated, but they are all taken from biographical elements of the authors whose books he is analysing, many of which, though not all, are children books.

As someone who did grow up reading much of Gutman or Kestner I feel I miss a lot, and could have enjoyed Shalev's insights more otherwise. At the same time, I have learned quite a lot and it may also inspire me to read more of the authors discussed in the future.
