This book provides unique access to the story of how scientists were accepted into the American Space Programme, and reveals how, after four difficult decades, the role of the heroic test pilot astronaut has been replaced by men and women who are science orientated space explorers.
A scholarly and often entertaining look at NASA's Scientist-astronauts. The designation refers to the NASA astronauts picked as groups 4 ("the scientists") & 6 ("the excess eleven"), in 1965 and 1967 respectively. These combined group of 17 astronauts include Jack Schmitt the only non-pilot to walk on the moon and the longest active, serving astronaut Story Musgrave, who flew six missions over a 30 year career. Perhaps a book more for the space buffs as its 540 pages are packed with mission information and details, along with biographies of all the astronauts. There is great first hand experiences from biographical sources, NASA and media interviews with the astronauts which make this a great resource. the authors history backgrounds are evidenced in their presentation and their meticulous research and referencing. I thoroughly enjoyed the book.
