The last thing successful businesswoman Samantha Jones envisions is her beloved grandmother in a nursing home - and having to fly to remote Gabriola Island to care for her orphaned infant niece. But family is as important to Samantha as her job with Cal Tremaine, and she’s determined not to let instant motherhood interrupt her career … until headstrong Cal offers something more tempting.
Cal’s rapidly growing software empire owes a lot to Samantha’s skills, and he isn’t about to let her get away. Yet when Cal gets his first look at Samantha away from the office, he realizes that he wants her to think of him as more than just her boss - he wants her to see him as a man. Suddenly he’s offering Samantha a business marriage that will satisfy the judge in gaining custody of her niece, but what he really wants is Samantha as his true wife … in every sense of the word.
"I love writing fiction - it's the perfect occupation for someone who can't decide what they want to be when they grow up. With each new story, I get to explore a new world."
Vanessa Grant's love affair with writing fiction began during a protracted illness at the age of 12 when she decided to write a novel of her own, sitting up in bed using the typewriter she'd been given for her birthday. Not a computer, not an electric typewriter, but a then-state-of-the-art manual typewriter. The story ground to a halt on page 50 but Vanessa never forgot the excitement of bringing her own characters to life.
In 1985 Vanessa's novel Pacific Disturbance was published in hardcover by Mills and Boon. She now has over 10 million books sold and has been translated into 15 languages. She also has written what one critic described as, "by far the best writing book I've ever read." Writing Romance, published by Self Counsel Press, won the Under the Covers Best Writing Book Award, and is currently in its third edition.
Over the years her love of storytelling and curiosity about people led Vanessa to study psychology, volunteer on a crisis line, complete individual and relationship counselor training, volunteer as a peer counselor for a family life organization, and tell stories about life, love, and secrets. Vanessa is also a university professor, a publisher of educational materials and eBooks, and has given workshops to writers' groups in Australia, New Zealand, the USA and Canada.
Vanessa and her husband live on Vancouver Island in the Pacific Northwest with their two Australian Shepherd dogs.
I could not stand Samantha, I was waiting throughs out the whole book to get out of her self loathing and cynical ways, I started to skim the book just to finish... Loved Cal ... Samantha is the main reason for the 2 stars, I could seriously only take so much!
Maybe a 2.5. I really didn't like either of the main characters. She was way to wishy-washy, and he went from 0 to a 100 and back to 0 in 10 days. I found myself skipping huge sections of the internal dialogue.
I totally loved this book.I know Samantha was so annoying at times and difficult, but thinking about what she went through as a child made it so hard to just love and not be in control all the time.I could honestly relate to what she was going through.Though I also hated how she gave Cal a hard time considering how well they knew each other as business partners and now in their supposed marriage. Its interesting how people like Samantha never got to appreciate until she lost him and swallowed her pride.Happens to everyone of us.
256pgs, a business woman goes to an island to care for her orphaned niece. Her career means a lot, but family means more. her boss does not want to lose her skills, and when he sees her out of the office, he wants more than a business relationship. He offers marriage so she can adopt her niece, but he wants a wife and business partner.
Likeable characters, although Samantha's waffling annoyed me at times. Interesting plot. I appreciate the marriage twist, their growing relationship, and how Cal & Sam had to figure themselves out separately before they could be back together.
I really liked this one, every once-in a while i just wanted to smack Samantha, but i still thought it was pretty good. And i can't complain to much, it was a free read:)
