Ray Blackstone barely survives a fatal car crash, emerging from the wreckage battered and bruised. But he has only one recollection: the police were hot on his pursuit, following a daring bank raid. Now, he has awoken in the remote woodlands, surrounded with tall trees or wreckage in sight.
Ray and his cronies find themselves battling the blistering wind and getting lost. Then, strange happenings begin to occur around Ray, ultimately leading him and his cohorts to a neglected log cabin. Heedless to danger, they decide to take refuge in this cabin for the night; and soon Ray learns the real reason they survived the crash and what’s in store for them.
Perhaps they have not escaped Death after all!
The novelette also includes a bonus story, titled, OUT OF ORDER.
Jason D. Brawn is a rabid fan of the horror genre, and a writer of dark fiction, which includes a plethora of published short stories and prose poetry, as well as a few produced radio plays and comic book scripts.
His short screenplay Portrait was made as a successful short film, and he holds a BA in Film and Media from Birkbeck, University of London and an MA in Gothic: Culture, Subculture and Counterculture from St. Mary’s University, in Strawberry Hill.
Ray Blackstone pulls off a bank robbery and is involved in a police chase. The van crashes and he and his friends escape. As they wander around the woods they come across an old abandoned cabin. Shortly after he starts to see and hear things, uncertain what it is. But soon Ray and his friends are about to find out what those visions and sounds are all about and they will not like what they discover.
An eerie creepy tale. I have read some of Jason D. Brawnwork and am never disappointed. He knows how to spin a spooky tale leaving the reader wanting more. Great short story, I recommend to all who love to get a chill and some thrills. I also recommend Stranded.
This is my first book that I've read by Jason Brawn and I must say, I really enjoyed it. Ray wakes up after surviving a fatal car crash and he only remembers being in a pursuit with the cops. He starts to see mysterious things in the woods and comes across a cabin. That when things get really weird. I found this book to be mysterious and suspenseful. I was on edge waiting for the next thing to happen.
This spooky horror novella will leave readers determined never to drive into the country again-at least not if they’ve first robbed a bank. I don’t think anyone comes out a winner in this story, except the Dark Side-and who wants them to win? Ray has just robbed a bank with his buds-for reasons that make sense to him, as we find out later on in the story-but it’s not just the police they need to fear. Lost, van wrecked in the forest, mates injured or worse-well, the best thing they can do is start trying to hike out, and keep looking for Refuge. After all, they’ve gotten away with all that money, haven’t they? Or have they? Have they really gotten away? Read on and find out for youself.
I reviewed an e-book version provided by the author, in return for my fair and impartial review.
I like scary books. I like the feeling of pleasant goosebumps on my skin, while 'living' the story through eyes of the main character. When I read Refuge, tingling chills transmuted into much darker emotion. This book has creeped me out. I have never had much liking for insects of any kind, not even pretty butterflies so the old house infested with creepy-crawlies is THE WORST nightmare. I felt tangibly anxious, yet fascinated. The story enveloped me just like dark woods in it, I felt squeamish and kept checking around me for any sign of creepy-crawlies. I am pleased to say, it is 'just a story'. But absolutely fantastic one!
