“Blind: Nicki Sosebee #8” by Jade C. Jamison
5 out of 5 stars
Are we blind to the unsavory things going on around us? Is it intentional or do we really just not care if it doesn’t directly affect us? Nicki is still chasing down the answers to who is behind the crystal meth drug trade in her little town of Winchester. The only problem is that law enforcement isn’t being very helpful and the readers of The Tribune have moved on to other topics. This leaves Nicki wondering if her little burg is ever going to truly “see” the corruption and illegal activities happening right under their noses. Will she ever be able to get to the bottom of the story and will it be before the danger catches up to her?
Nicki’s diving deeper into the underbelly of Winchester and it’s exciting to see! I love her tenacity and her determination to uncover the truth about the meth trade and prostitution in her city. Her unwillingness to give up in the face of potential danger makes her a bit of an equal with Sean and his BAMF status. Perhaps she should get a tattoo as well! I love this side of her and I hope we continue to see it as the series goes on.
In her personal life Nicki is on cloud nine as her dreams of a relationship with Sean are finally coming true. I want to concentrate on Sean because I feel like his character really grew with this book. I have to admit that I wasn’t always a fan of his and felt that in past outings he seemed a little selfish concerning Nicki. However, looking back now I see that Jamison played her cards very close to the vest and created a subtle build up that made their coupling all the more realistic because of it. I have seen subtle signs of Sean’s true feelings here and there throughout the series but that would inevitably be replaced with what can only be called “I don’t want her but no one else should have her either” behavior. It rubbed me the wrong way where his character was concerned and pushed me toward Team Jesse. After this book I’m singing a different song. The Sean that emerges in these pages is a deep, thoughtful, and even romantic guy. He possesses an almost old fashioned quality in his approach to his relationship with Nicki and the depth of his feelings for her are an insight into all of his previous actions. Where I once saw a selfish man, I now see a guy who was fighting his emotions in an effort to avoid being hurt again. The strength of their friendship is an awesome foundation and only serves to make their transition into a couple that much more believable. These two really know each other well and it shines a light on how right finally being together is for them. The Sean of this book is a man worth rooting for and I love the “adultness” of their relationship. Nicki seemed much more emotionally mature in this book and I think finally being with Sean is a key element in that. Their chemistry is a subtle burn on every page and in every look. I can feel their attraction as it burns up the pages, and even better, I can feel the love that is at the root of it.
I am in awe of Jamison. If every writer could capture my attention the way she does I don’t think I’d ever leave the house. I love her characters and the “realness” in which she writes them. I think she has lived in each of their heads and it comes through the page with every line. She seems to know just the right time to give the readers a “pay off” and each time she gives the series a blast of freshness that easily keeps me coming back for more. She is, hands down, one of my favorite authors! Even as I write this I’m making plans to start the next book and see where Nicki’s adventures take her next. I can’t recommend anything Jamison has written enough!
