Pleasing the Colonel

Rate this book
Trapped in a crevice after a carriage accident, Amanda Downy is not sure whether she'll ever see the light of day again. With her tongue loosened by a fellow passenger's flask of brandy, she reveals several well-guarded secrets about her life as a governess at Colonel Watson's residence, including the fact that she falsified her references to gain her employment.

The next morning Amanda is horrified when she finds that the passenger who saved her life after the carriage crash is sitting at the breakfast table at Colonel Watson’s estate, and it appears that he is the long-absent Colonel himself! Amanda is certain that she will be immediately dismissed, but the Colonel has a different sort of discipline in mind for her…

The Colonel soon learns that in spite of the deceitful manner with which she obtained the position, Miss Downy is an excellent governess and is much loved by his children. After a firm dose of the leather strap on her bare bottom, he lets her know that she may keep her position as long as she is truthful with him in the future. As time passes, though, the Colonel finds himself thinking of Amanda as he has not thought about any woman since his beloved wife passed away. Though he has no intention of ever marrying again, he cannot deny his growing need for her.

Amanda has a longstanding dislike for stiff military men, yet she warms to the Colonel, discovering that underneath his gruff exterior he is kind and generous. As she wonders if the attraction is mutual, another suitor makes his interest known. Should she accept his offer? Or should she wait to see if the Colonel will ever make his move?

This book contains sexual scenes and spankings, including domestic discipline in a historical setting. If such material offends you, please do not buy this book!

I hit the jackpot with this author. I love historical romances...with a controlling dominant male. And I love spankfics...with a controlling dominant male (I'm seeing a pattern ;) So can you imagine the energetic happy dance I busted out with when I found a story that combined these two favs? But the biggest surprise for me was how well it was written.

If you read the synopsis, you'll know that the heroine, a new governess who falsifies her credentials to get a job, gets snockered and unknowingly runs her mouth in front of her boss who's returning from the army. Instead of firing her, he gives her the benefit of the doubt and lets her stay...but disciplines her for her misdeeds. The rest of the story takes them through their developing relationship and various events that get her, and other's, in trouble.

For the most part, this is your typical Regency romance, just with a little (ok, a lot...more than normal) discipline woven in. And it isn't blaring (unless a guy spanking a woman at all just totally pisses you off, then it's probably not so subtle ;D).

For me, I guess I would describe it as a traditional historical romance with a little extra zing!

So if you ever find yourself torn: "Do I want that traditional historical romance or am I in the mood for some serious Dominant male action?", you no longer have to choose. Happy day! ;D

I've just revisited this one as an audiobook. The reader does a fine job.

Mandy is forced to take a position as a governess after her father dies and her, her mother and sister are left penniless. She finds a position with 2 young children whose mother died over a year ago and the father is a military man away at the Burmese War.
She and the Colonel meet under unusual circumstances and definitely the wrong foot.

It's a quiet story with no evil villains or grasping OWs. Just the Colonel and Mandy getting to know each other over several months. He's a stern man who is used to the Military life and hasn't smiled much since his wife died. They were an arranged match but they did grow to love each other. But I didn't feel that Mandy was second best. The author does a nice job showing the Colonel falling under her spell.

Of course as this is a spanking novel, the Colonel finds reasons to chastise Mandy several times throughout the story. Some of these opportunities were brought about by the Colonel's younger sister who is spoiled and stubborn, acting like a witch. The sister doesn't escape punishment either, but I did wish Mandy would give her a good kick in the shin.

My one complaint is that, not once did the Hero call the Heroine by her first name. Found that kinda odd and killed the romance for me a bit.

safety is pretty good

What happens when a destitute lady without a man in her life to support her is forced to find a job? Sometimes good things. Every time I read a historical novel, I shudder at the hopelessness of aristocratic women. They are really just show ponies who can't do a lick of anything. Without a man, bad things can happen. I'm rather relieved I'd be either a peasant or petite bourgeoisie. I digress.

In this erotic historical romance, Amanda Downy lies about her work experience so she can find a job as a governess. It's hard to just start working, isn't it? Even in today's society, without work experience, it's hard to find a job. Still, Amanda perseveres and finds a job with some "false" background. (As a side note, many people lie on their resumes about their education and work experience in current day. I see that this is no different regardless the century.) Amanda aka Mandy is thrown for a loop when her employer returns home and finds out about her deceit. Let the spankings commence!

There have been some debates about the historical accuracy of this situation. Regardless of accuracy, this is a hot little read. The Colonel is an imposing man who is the head of household. I find this attractive and sexy. The fact that he metes out bare bottom spankings makes him all the more seductive to me. This is a pretty light domestic discipline story which is sweetly erotic with just enough romance in it. Ms. Rose does a good job of intertwining the DD and romance into this short story. Her writing voice is light, humourous and at times funny snarky. I recommend this erotic historical romance to kinky readers who enjoy a bit of spanking discipline.

What an exceedingly felicitous pairing! A warm hearted Regency romance with bottom warming erotic spankings! I very much enjoyed this book. It was well written, and the author avoided many of the pitfalls (in my opinion) of Regency, as well as other, romances.

There were misunderstandings, but they were quickly and logically resolved. The characters were not perfect, but they were adults and responded as such. No TSTL heroines in this story. Amanda was intelligent, kind, innocent yet aware - I really liked her. Colonel Watson was both disciplined in his bearing and responsible in his life role, however he was able to accept criticism without blaming others for his failings. In short, the protagonists were realistic and approachable.

Yes, there were a few "convenient plot devices" often seen in Regencys, but rather than causing eye rolling, they simply moved the story along in an enjoyable, if not entirely surprising manner. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys erotic romances, erotic and disciplinary spankings, and Regency era stories. Even if all three aren't your cup of tea, but perhaps only one or two - I recommend you give it a go anyway. You may find yourself newly enjoying a genre that had perhaps grown stale - I certainly did!

I won’t go into the story as others have done that very well. What I really disliked about this was the corporal punishment. While I quite like domestic discipline stories, I didn’t like this one at all. The leading man the colonel first beats the governess his employee on her bare bottom with a belt, and while I realise the romance aspect is between these two I thought the use of a belt was too much. Then he spanks his sister, then a servant, then in between he spanks the heroine/governess with a wide ruler, then on another occasion with a whip. Then he beats both his sister and the heroine together with both bent over his desk at the same time with a strap. He was a creepy.

If domestic discipline is your thing then you will love this book, if not then I suggest trying something else. If you want to try DD, then this is probably a good place to start. This was my first DD book and I thought that the punishment was not too overwhelming and not too violent, but it gave me a taste of what to expect with DD relationships. That being said I think it confirms for me that I really do not like DD stories. The book was okay, but I just could not get past the unfairness and inequality of DD relationships.

Warning: the rest of this review contains spoilers.

Here are some of my issues with the story:

The Colonel whips Mandy for all sorts of supposed "offenses" (most of which were completely justified), but when he almost rapes her he gets off with giving her a paid vacation to visit her sick mother? That does not fly with me. Yeah, I get that his judgment was impaired with the opium Mandy gave him to help with his illness, and that he was riddled with guilt afterward, but that is still no excuse.

Also, after Mandy helped save the Colonel's son Tom from almost falling to his death, the Colonel ends up spanking her for lying to him about who was supposed to be watching the children. I don't care if Mandy told a hundred lies, she just saved his son's life. I think that should give her a reprieve.

During one of the spankings Mandy is over the Colonel's knee and he decides to part her legs a bit so that he can get better aim or something stupid like that. In doing so he gets a nice little view of her "sex", as he call it. As if baring a woman's ass wasn't enough of an invasion of privacy, he also decides it's okay to pull her legs apart to ogle her some more. He felt all guilty and sorry when he almost raped her, but he doesn't feel the least bit in the wrong for this invasion? What a prick.

If all that wasn't bad enough, we had this little gem: When the Colonel takes Mandy's advise about trying to get closer to his children and buys them a dog, they are discussing with the children about how to train the dog. The Colonel says that they might need to scold her when she does some thing wrong and that he can help because he is quite good at that. The Colonel then turns to Mandy, grinning, and winks at her, and she blushes and gets all shy. I'm sorry, but he just compared her to a dog. There is nothing remotely romantic or blush-worthy about that. That little comment alone almost make me stop reading, but I soldiered on.

The ending was sort of sweet: the Colonel and Mandy got their HEA and all, but the journey to get there was difficult for me. In the end, I don't regret reading this book. I wanted to try a DD book and I'm glad I did, if for no other reason that to assure myself that DD books are not for me.

A sensual domestic discipline historical romance.

When Amanda Downy father died and her and mother and sister were forced out on the streets to look for work and a place to live Amanda fudged her resume to get a job as a governess for a widowed Colonel who was away at war. Amanda through the tragedy of losing her home and the life she knew ended up being the stronger one and wanted one day to be able to be with her mother and sister again. On the way back from a visit with her mother the carriage she is riding in has an accident. After accepting alcohol to calm her nerves while waiting for rescue she opening complains about her absent employer not realizing that he is one of the passengers trapped with her.

Imagine her surprise the next morning when she comes down to breakfast and finds out that passenger was the Colonel himself and he doesnt abide with lying so she gets her first punishment.

Colonel Charles Watson was heart broken when his wife died and he vowed never to love again as it was to painful to lose someone. He has many regrets over being away from his children for so long but tends to treat them like they were his troops under his command. Amanda who has come to care for the children has no problem standing up to him and telling him he needs to make some changes. He struggles with his feelings for the governess but has no problem exposing her bottom and spanking her but it shouldn't turn him on so.

These two fight there attraction to each other but it was a joy to watch neither of them winning that fight.

In a dire financial situation, Amanda is forced to fabricate references and seek employment as a governess. But after a carriage accident, when a fellow passengers gives her brandy to warm her up, she confesses her misdeeds, unaware one of the other passengers is her employer whom she’s never met.

When the Colonel discovers his governess is the woman aboard the carriage, he implements corporal discipline and spanks her for her deceit. Over time, the Amanda comes to learn that beneath his harsh methods and gruff exterior is a loving, caring man, and he gradually becomes quite taken by his young governess.

Historical fiction and domestic discipline go well when paired and this one is no exception. It’s a fast-paced, interesting read, and I found the spanking scenarios to be believable. If you enjoy domestic discipline or spanking romances, pick this one up. You’ll be as pleased as the Colonel!

Amanda's family loses their fortune when her Father dies and she has to make her way in the world as a governess. Charles, a widower with two young children, has just returned to England after participating in a military campaign.

Their first meeting was a disaster - and not for the reason you may be thinking.

It is a really fun story. I loved how they were "Miss Downy" and "The Colonel" right up until nearly the end. It granted a nice level of feeling authentic.

Charles was quite a disciplinarian and he ran his home as a tight ship. It wasn't just Mandy who went over his desk - especially in one particular scene.

If you like the traditional historical romance and I do mean traditional I think you will enjoy this.

I loved this book! I read it in two nights and thought about reading it in the middle of the day which I think is too indulgent when really, I should be writing.

It was well written and the story believable and realistic. The only sex scene was at the very end (there was one masturbation scene in the middle) but I have to say, it was one of the sexiest stories I've ever read. I loved the colonel and I loved Amanda. I loved how he took care of her after punishments and how their love came about. The story was robust and just a very enjoyable read. I loved it.

Having never been a fan of Regency novels per se I was a little nervous to start this one. Well let me tell you this is a great book! The characters are very well done and the story was interesting. The punishment scenes fit nicely into the story - and were not overly plentiful which gave the author time to develop more fully Mandy and her Colonel. The sexual tension is there - but not overly played upon. Fans of a dominant man who is caring and alpha should find this right up their alley!

I totally enjoy this wonderful Historical Romance and that's big coming from someone who doesn't read Historical.

Full Review to follow shortly.

Here is another Historical Romance by Renee Rose what I totally enjoyed! I was thinking to myself, what is it about Renee’s books that I seem to enjoy so much, because as I have said in the past, I don’t normally read Historical.

Is it the characters? And the answer would have to be yes. The chemistry between Amanda and Charles is evident from the first time they met. The story seamlessly sets it’s self-up from the first chapter when we meet them after Amanda’s carriage breaks down and The Colonel stops to help. We immediately connect with Amanda as she is telling her story to the hardships she and her sister and mother have endured after the death of her father and the family lost everything.

Amanda doesn’t wallow in self-pity but pulls up her big girl panties and does what needs to get done. She lies to get a job as a governess for two little one’s whose father is absent due to the war.
Now after having a few slips of Brandy, feeling bad about what she had to do, she confess this while waiting to be rescued.

The next morning as Amanda walks into the dining room, she is not only surprised that her employer, the children’s father is back, but he is also The Colonel who helped her last night and heard everything she said. Again, Amanda pulls up her big girl panties and faces the Colonel in his study to accept the fact that she may lose her job, but to her amazement, she leaves the study with her job in tack but a very sore bottom.

It was refreshing to read a heroine who is strong and independent, but then doesn’t whine.

The Colonel is a man of great character as well, as he sees Amanda’s plight and wants to help her all the while fighting his attraction to her. I love how the relationship between Charles and Amanda builds slowly and it also involves the children, after all, she is the Governess.

It was a joy to watch these two people fight and try to deny their attraction to each other.

Pleasing the Colonel by Renee Rose

This will be an enjoyable novel for most readers though those with detailed knowledge of the Regency period in England will pick up on some discrepancies or poetic license from the social propriety and etiquette of that time and place. Renee has the makings of a decent Regency romance writer with a little more attention to detail.
The story redeems itself by this rather charming will it or won’t it happen romance.
The character Amanda has come from an aristocratic lineage but family fortunes were lost and she works as a governess to a widowed Colonel Watson. I would categorise this as bondage lite, with some spanking context. The Colonel has a dominant personality and is more used to dealing with soldiers and war than his own young children of whom he has spent little time with. He finds he is reluctant to admit and commit his feelings.
The standard of writing is good and has been edited.
I have another of Renee’s novels with a more modern setting The Elusive ‘O’ and it will interest me to compare how she writes about the different periods of time.
If this period of history hadn’t been a specialist area of mine and with it’s Jane Austen style appeal, I would have given it 4 stars, however, in this instance I find myself giving it 3 stars.

Another 5 star review for Renee Rose. This book was incredibly well done and I got so wrapped up in the tale that I could not put it down. I love the foreshadowing in the beginning when Mandy has too much to drink and you take a breath and say, 'if he's a Colonel'. Sure enough you find out quickly that she is the new governess of his home. Your heart hurts along with hers when she hears how devastated he has been without his wife and the overwhelming need he has to protect her just speaks volume for his character. I even liked his feisty sister who he turns over his desk for some intense spankings especially when she redeems herself at the end. Mandy is a very likeable character and you can honestly see why the children fall in love with her, it makes perfect sense that the gruff Colonel follows suit. She takes charge in several scenes and though it usually ends with her bottom up in the air, you have to smile for sticking up for what is right. This story had a very nice flow and to me was sweeter than Renee's other books. It just makes you smile. That being said the discipline was very believable and the tension between the two main characters kept it exciting. Hands down, 5 stars.

Pleasing the Colonel was a well-written and heartwarming regency novella that grabbed me from the first chapter. Actually, after I read the first chapter available online, I immediately went to Amazon to download the book and keep reading. I enjoy regency romances, so I was excited to read one with spankings. I loved it and I hope Renee Rose plans to write more books set in this time period. Amanda and Charles have great chemistry. I admire how Amanda strives to overcome the obstacles in life after her father dies, and I thought it was touching each time Charles helped her – like by making it easier for her to visit her sick mother and securing her belongings from her uncle. These little things meant the world to Amanda and showed that despite how indifferent he could seem, Charles was a man of good character. The relationship that slowly develops between them is beautiful, though at times rocky, and she does end up over his knee (or bent over his desk) a few times throughout the novel. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good spanking romance, especially fans of historical fiction. Well done!

I really enjoyed “Pleasing the Colonel” by Renee Rose. After a year at war away from his two children, Colonel Watson was headed home. Unfortunately, the coach he was on was in an accident and he had to spend several hours with the other passengers waiting for assistance. In that time, he watched as one of the passengers got another tipsy and listened attentively as she divulged all sorts of secrets, including how she lied about her references in order to obtain a position as a governess. Little did he know that she was the new governess recently hired to take care of his two children. They were both shocked the next morning when she reported for work.

Amanda Downy navigates her relationship with the members of the Watson household with caution, but cannot help but develop feelings for the stern colonel. Renee Rose demonstrates creativity and exceptional character development during each interaction of these seemingly different characters. The series of events that brings these characters together is realistic and captivating. I most certainly loved this tale and will be adding it to the list of books I would definitely pick up again.

I truly enjoyed this novel. It reminded me of the romances that I used to read long ago, although with much better writing and delicious spanking scenes! I'm always captured by how deeply I lose myself in Renee Rose's writing. I find myself living within the story; feeling, seeing, & breathing each scene right along with her characters. They become very real and very much alive to me. I just want to savor her books much like fine wine or decadent chocolate! They have a tendency to stay with me awhile. This book will be no exception.

Instead of...Be careful what you wish for...Be careful what you say...
Amanda Downy openly admits falsifying references on her application for a governess position. Little did she know, her admission was in the presence of her boss, Colonel Watson. A Regency Romance with a little spanking discipline creates a refreshing context for events in this novel. Setting, characters, and punishment were well developed and believable. Mandy's feelings for the Colonel coupled with being spanked/disciplined by the Colonel causes sexual tension in this delightfully entertaining story.

After enjoying Lady Meriwyn's Punishment, I looked for more Ms Rose's historical stories and picked this one mostly at random. I think the book described the precarious status of a governess well - neither part of the upstairs nor the downstairs folk. Luckily for Amanda, the master of the house develops a fondness for her - but he doesn't forget to mete out punishment when he thinks it's necessary ;-) The children were adorable and added a touch of lightness to the book. It's an unexceptional story and just the thing for a quick read on a lazy holiday afternoon.

Pleasing the Colonel was a delightful change after reading my last book. It's about a governess and an retired army Colonel. His wife died and now they are falling in love. The Colonel is strict in his behavior, but the governess doesn't mind a spanking, as long as the Colonel defrosts enough to love him. I have this theory that captain Von Trapp did spank his Maria. No, this Colonel and his lovely governess have one two children, but they are working on that as we speak.

It's rare for me to read a book from this time period but I just had to when it was written by an author I've enjoyed before (and it was part of the erotic reads this month). I thoroughly enjoyed it. The story felt authentic to the time period, the characters were charming and the romance was enchanting. Loved it.

I'm giving this three stars because I liked the writing style and it had loads of potential for being a regular HR novel, and a very entertaining one at that. Mandy, the lovely from an upper class background, whose life and finances take a downward turn, the (literally) accidental meeting between her and the Colonel, the handsome H (though rather stern and forbidding) who's a widower, with two young children he has trouble relating to, her lying to get the job as governess, the attraction they try not to give in to, the OM, trouble with relatives and household staff, and other obstacles along the way. Some things could have been given more attention, like more scenes with the unsympathetic cousins, putting the h's mother and sister into the story, more competition from the h's suitor, (and perhaps some for the h as well), more scenes of him growing closer with his children (like when he bought them the puppy) and some conflict thrown in to keep them apart and uncertain for a time (the book touched on that, but not enough). So much good that could have been better.

As for the spanking scenes, I think the first one was a bit too soon and a bit too harsh. I also didn't like him spanking the servant girl (though it was only talked about not described), as I think that's something that should be reserved for the h. And while I can understand his anger at his sister, Lucinda in several instances, I still don't think he should spank her, or at least not on her bare bottom (again, that should be something between the H and h, no one else), and the double spanking scene with Mandy and Lucinda I could have done without.

I'd also have liked more scenes with the two of them getting to know each other, like when they went horseback riding and he was impressed with Mandy's equestrian skills. The scene where Mandy helps rescue his little son, Tom from the barn roof was impressive, showing this author has a real talent that could have made this book a real winner.

I think M. Rose should write more HR books, make them longer, add historical background detail and her books would be a great read, with or without the spankings.

Governess Mandy

Mandy had to find a position and she had no reference. Before her father died, she was of the highly class. Some of her people wrote a recommendation for her as a governess. On the way to her new position, her carriage crashed and her and her companions were in dirstriats. While waiting to be rescued, one man offered her a flask. To steady her nerves, she drank from it and her tongue became freer. She was telling them about her circumstances and how she came to her new position. They became rescued and she continued on to her new job. But a colonel in their carriage went to her new position. He had been listening to her confessions about her references and how she had lied. The children loved her from the beginning. But he had to punish her for lying. He didn't want another wife, but as time went on he realized that he loved his governess, but how to win her affection and love. So, you can read their story. It's a good romantic tale of spankings and loving. It's a light story for a rainy day. I recommend this book to everyone who loves to read gothic romances, especially written by a great lady, Renee Rose.
