BTOOOM!, Vol. 1

Rate this book
By all counts, Ryouta Sakamoto is a loser when he's not holed up in his room, bombing things into oblivion in his favorite online action RPG. But his very own uneventful life is blown to pieces when he's abducted and taken to an uninhabited island, where he soon learns the hard way that he's being pitted against others just like him in a explosives-riddled death match! How could this be happening? Who's putting them up to this? And why!? The name, not to mention the objective, of this very real survival game is eerily familiar to Ryouta, who has mastered its virtual counterpart-BTOOOM! Can Ryouta still come out on top when he's playing for his life!?

It's apparently my goal to read all of the latest survival scifi/horror manga out there. I really didn't start this journey on purpose, seriously! It also doesn't help that the "person transported into a video game" trope is super popular right now.

Unfortunately I'm not seeing a whole lot of originality yet, so unlike Darwin's Game, I don't feel the urge to keep reading. I'll probably continue anyway for at least three volumes to give it a chance to show me something new. Right now it's basically just: dude gets transported to a deserted island and he has to kill people with bombs if he wants to get off it.

One thing I find funny, the Japanese version has the XBOX green color and it's made to look like a game case.

It even says "DXBOX 720" lol. It's very obviously a parody of the real cases but I'm guessing Yen Press didn't want to risk pissing Microsoft off.

If you`re wondering if the Squid game had some manga inspiration then don`t look further!

This is you`re pick!

True, there are some small differences, but overall it very much feels like it!

There is some potential here, but I think that the action will take the most of the story here, with not so much time for character development.

The artwork is pretty good showcasing that the manga remains a very powerful medium for a better exposing of fantasy or science fiction ideas.

For the longest time, I never even gave this series a second glance, because of the name...which, in retrospect, was probably rather short-sighted of me, considering I've enjoyed anime with names like Durarara!! (or simply "DRRRR!" in the official English translation). But I was recently paging through a RightStuf sale, and saw this series was part of it, so I gave it a look.

BTOOOM! is a game of death story--a genre I have a real fondness for. And so far, it's...yet to truly distinguish itself from the pack. The fact that the only weapons available to the contestants are various kinds of bombs is a little different, and the Last Starfighter-esque plot point of the eponymous online game (possibly) serving as a qualifying test to be shoved into the survival game is kinda interesting, but it hasn't developed enough to truly wow me yet.

But I'm getting ahead of myself. Several dozen people have been kidnapped, and taken to an island in the middle of the ocean, outfitted with nothing but a case of eight bombs (of various types), each, and told the only way to escape is to kill seven other people and collect the tracking/radar devices implanted in their hands. The main character, Ryouta Sakamoto, is one of the best Japanese players of BTOOOM!, multiplayer game with the same basic rules--since he was chosen seemingly for that reason, it suggests the other contestants were as well...except that there are a lot of Japanese people in the survival game, and it's established that Ryouta's team only just made it into the top ten worldwide rankings. So...maybe my assumption is a red herring. That's pretty much it, for the setup.

Ryouta himself was one of the hardest sells for this series. Initially, he's portrayed as your typical loser of a main character, so common to contemporary anime/manga: 22, lives with his parents, no job or a desire to find one, etc. He's also a tremendous asshole to his mother, and just comes across as an extremely unlikable person. As this volume progresses, attempts are made to humanize him. We find out he does have goals, but he's clinging to them so single-mindedly, that he's developed tunnel vision regarding any other options--to the point that he may even be getting exploited by certain people without consciously realizing it. It helps, but the first impression Ryouta leaves is a hard one to wash away so quickly.

Bit by bit, we do start to see other nuances to him as well. Exhibit A: He's actually horrified by the killing going on around him, despite his chronic exposure to it through the online game, which is an important distinction to make. He still knows the tactics to survive, but he's rattled at the prospect of having to use them in real life. Exhibit B: at one point, he comes across a female player washing herself off in a river, but rather than focus on the obvious fanservice, Ryouta's attention is instead drawn to the supplies she's left on the riverbank. It's a well-executed moment that gives me hope for the rest of the series.

Overall, BTOOOM! hasn't wowed me yet, but it's showing a bit of promise. I did pick up several volumes during the sale, so we'll see if I warm to it more in the next installment. Right now, it's a very baseline game of death series. Not terrible like, say, Doubt, but certainly not as distinctive as, say, GANTZ.

Can I play off murder as nothing more than a game!?

It’s not for nothing that Btooom! has a “Parental Advisory Warning” right on the front cover. Set in Japan this Battle Royale-esque manga follows protagonist Ryouta Sakamoto as he wakes up on a seamingly deserted island with little provisions, a bag of mysterious items and no memory of how he got there. After walking a short distance, and finding out that the mysterious items are a bunch of timed hand bombs, he finally comes across another human being. Unfortunately for Sakamoto this human immediately attempts to kill him.

All this happens within the first chapter, and it quickly becomes clear to Sakamoto, and to readers, that the protagonist is stuck in some sort of death match. Though the details of the situation, the game rules and how he ended up there in the first place, doesn’t become clear till the 5th chapter, it is slowly revealed through clues and hints Sakamoto quickly picks up on that he’s being made to act out a popular online video game called Btooom! (a game our protagonist is more than a little familiar with as he’s one of the top international players). For our main character the horror and reality of it all doesn’t quite sink in until his first run in with another human, but that doesn’t compare to the horror of uncovering his memories of how he got to the island and the rules of the inescapable death match.

Despite being based on a video game this was a very well put together story with many similarities with Battle Royale but just enough uniqueness for it to distinguish itself as a separate piece. The main character, despite being an unemployed gamer and …well…a genuine a-hole before having his world ripped from him, is a very intelligent character capable of thinking up an array of strategies he cleverly employs and alters depending on the situation and his opponents. The other two main characters which aren’t introduced until later in this volume add a nice contrast to Sakamoto’s logical, but often thoughtful, personality. The other characters Sakamoto and his group end of encountering all either added to the suspense and thrill of the story as opponents (and there are some seriously psychologically messed up opponents here), or added to the progression of the plot/characters development. So while there had been plenty of action in this series so far, none of it has felt like mindless action.

This is an on-going series with 14 volumes currently available (17 volumes as of the end of May 2017), and after reading up to volume 6 I have to say it is well worth investing in. Other than a few sexually explicit scenes (I will warn you from now sexual assault, though never condoned, is something that has appeared a couple times throughout this story), I loved it. Each action scene, and even a lot of the dialogue, has included some amazing tactical maneuvers or served to really bring home the tension and fear saturated atmosphere, as well as the psychologically/emotionally damaging effects of being forced to live out a kill or be killed situation.

This quickly turned out to be one of my favorite series, and one I avidly devour whenever I can get my hands on it. 8/10 Unicorn Horns

Wow! This Manga was amazing!

I had started this several years ago but it was still in the writing process. The Btoom! series have been finished some years ago and I got a chance to read all the chapters now.

This series will definitely change the way you see people. Especially when people reveal their true nature when put under life-threatening pressure.

A group of 32 people is gathered on an island that has harsh surviving conditions. Each of them is equipped with a special type of "grenade" and they have chips implanted into their hands that can serve as a radar to find other people. In order to leave the island and return to their normal lives each of them has to collect 8 chips by killing the other participants. Its a all versus all scenario.
Some people form groups, but trust is something very volatile and is tested every moment. Greed and fear make many of them take harsh decisions.

Its a cruel story but Jounya Inoue shows us with great talent the dark shadow side of the human being. Cold murder, suicide, sexual violence, treason, deception, cruelty, you name it and you will probably find it along the story.
Still our main hero is a pure hearted being, free of corruption, selfless, intelligent and loving. The romantic story we follow with him is pretty nice.

I give this whole manga a 4.5 rating because I think that in the last third it lost its tension and could have been better. Still, I liked it very much and would recommend it without thinking to you if you like a high-tension storyline that pushes your ethical values and judgments to the extreme.

This manga is one of my favorites because 1. WE HAVE AN INTELLIGENT MALE PROTAGONIST (bless the lord for Junya sensei) in other stories like this, we have really dumb protagonists that act before they think. Ryota has a brain and I'm so grateful for that or I would have stopped reading the manga immediately. P/s he puts others ahead of him, like what he did with himiko and we don't see gentlemen like him everyday.
2. Everyone had such great background stories, propelling them to do things in the way they had been adapted to. Taira San was a really great guy but the feelings of dread and helplessness gnawed at him alive, making him have stress hallucinations. Each of their deaths were so sad, you find yourself praying for the peace of their soul, even if they were just purely fictional.
I really really enjoyed it and I look forward to the next chapter!

Reseña y calificación para todo el manga.

BTOOOM!

Having watch the anime several years ago I never forgot when the second season was coming. Unfortunately it never did and never will. First is the introduction of some characters and pretty good.

If you are thinking of reading bear and mind that this is something of a mix of virtual world but not virtual , where players must kill one another to leave the island.

We got our main character which was one of the best players of the game, a older dude - that suffers a lot, and a young hot girl that was traumatized by being abused by another player.

So, if you are a snowflake , and can't handle some nakedeness, some violence and gore don't watch it.. although the abuse scene is traumatic and she has to deal, the vast majority of the manga is ecchi.. ( sexy stuff). I only watch the anime so I don't know where they are going with the themes

3.3/5

Sword Art Online meets Battle Royale, only better than what I've seen of SAO but much worse than BR, though I may be a bit biased, seeing as the latter is one of my favourite novels of all time.

BTOOOM! is simple enough: a loser whose only redeeming merits are his skills at a violent RPG video game wakes up on a tropical island and soon realizes that he's been kidnapped and thrust into a real-life version of the game's scenario in which he must kill to survive. Pretty standard survival stuff, really. It's a bit frustrating just how long it takes this champion to realize just what he's into. Sure, it's only natural to be totally confused about the situation, but I feel like even after the obvious has been beating him over the head for more than half the book, and our protagonist, Ryouta Sakamoto, still doesn't get it, it transcends the point of 'traumatic experience' and just goes on to beating a thoroughly dead horse.

Oh well. Other than how long it takes him to truly grasp the situation, this is a decent start to what could be a promising series. The artwork is great and the character designs are pretty good. It's nice to see a large cast of characters that don't all look the same with the same moe eyes and small mouths and nonexistent noses.

For now, I'm not sure how this could play out, because by this point the 'fight to survive' trope has been done to death. So far it offers nothing new, but who knows? This is only the establishing, debut volume. Inoue may have some fancy tricks up his sleeve for us later...

I've been looking for an awesome, just so-cool-damn-I-LOVE-IT!! seinen or at least a very gritty shonen manga to pop up, and after reading Battle Royale and catching up with the latest chapter of Gantz, I was without such reading material.

But this seems promising. That crazy kid seems a little out of place, like "what in Christ's name...?!" but let's see how things unfold, shall we?

The author of this book is Junya Inoue. This man is a musical artist he writes books. His most famous books are BTOOOM, Otogi Matsuri, and Offerings. He was born October 18 1971. There's no reason why he wrote the book but he does enjoy writing manga and finds fun in it. He does it for entertainment.
This book was written in 2009 it started in Shinchosha weekly comic bunch. It all was wrote in japan and put in a bunch of comic stores. He final licensed for release in North America and began releasing it in spring 2013.
The setting of Btooom is in his room where he plays his game. The city that he lives in and last but not least the island that he gets trapped on to play this horrible game that involves death.
There are 2 main characters one is Ryota Sakamoto this is the boy he is 22 years old and is the best player in japan at btooom. He doesn't like his mom and he doesn't see his dad much but he loves to play games and only the best players in btooom have to fight tell the death in this game. Himiko is the other main character she is a girl about 15 years old. She is a high school girl who also plays the game btooom. In the game she is married to Ryota but that was only in the game. In the game in real life she has to play she actually starts to like Ryota and they have to survive together.
The Theme of the book btooom is romance survival suspense and action. This is romance for the boy and girl liking eachother and survival since they have to fight in btooom to stay alive suspense since you never know when they could die and action for all the fighting that goes on.
Ryota is the best player in Japan at btooom but for being this good one of the top 20 players in the world he is forced to play it in real life and face death. Along with him is Himiko which is his wife in the Btooom game but they don't know who each other are. Ryota and Himiko will face many challenges along the way and will have to actually kill people with bombs to live. If they kill 8 people and get their chips out of there hand they will live Himiko and Ryota will work together.
The Food Bags here are as big as desk here. Idiom death was right underneath me. Idiom
The first one to move wins. Stay on the defensive and you’ll lose your chance. Ryota

The theme has been done before. As far as I know, the term 'battle royale' was coined by the manga with the same name. The cast here is more varied, but the basic mechanics are similar - survive by killing other players. Very much like in Battle Royale, there is a psychological side to everything. And it's a fast read. Let's see how many volumes I can go before I get bored. I certainly won't read all of them.

Ryouta Sakamoto lives with his mom and is unemployed. The only thing he does all day is play a battle royale online game called 'Btooom!', though he is quite adept at it. One day he wakes up in a jungle setting equipped with what appear to be devices similar to the ones in his favorite game. His skills in the game will be put to the test in real life.

Well this was a quick read. This volume is basically a setup to the premise of the series/game. 20+ people/players are abducted and transported to an island to play a kill or be killed survivor game. Our protagonist Ryouta wakes up on the island with no memories of how he got there and suddenly faced with someone trying to kill him… the rest of the volume is him trying to figure out what is going on.

First time reading a series like this, it is quite graphically violent. Similar to hunger games or the more violent battle royal, but focused more on strategy and game play, rather than tying to keep their protagonist clean by avoiding playing, seems like everyone will face the need to kill to survive. The setup is geared toward everyone needing to collect kills in order to survive and be able to leave the island. Some shady company is behind this game, why? Guess we will eventually learn that. The players are all ages and genders with various levels of morality. Our protagonist is a flawed one, his back story shows him to be quite mean to his mother and not very likable, guess he is going to grow from this experience, he isn’t all bad at least he isn’t eager to kill.

Well. I wanted something a little different from my usual reads so I’ll see how long I can stomach this more horrific type of series. If this was live action I couldn’t watch something so graphic, but the visuals don’t really bother me so far.

The first book is a little slow. I enjoyed the story but I feel like something was missing. Ryouta is on a team that places 10th in the world for a online video game called BTOOOM!. He lives a shut in life with no motivation to get a job. Ryouta wakes up on a deserted island stranded with numerous other deviant characters pit against each other in a BTOOOM based death match for their freedom. The first volume was pretty mild but this is your WARNING the next volume has mangled corpses and necrophilia.

My fiancé got really into this series so i decided to give it a go (the english version). Book One grabbed my attention straight away. The storyline is similar in ways to Hunger Games however the use of bombs is the only way to kill others.

I like the idea that it is based on an online game.. or at least that is how it started. Being as how this is my first attempt at manga it drew me in. It did make me want to continue with the series.

I could only make it through 8 volumes of this garbage. It's extremely repetitive as-is, so I shudder to think of how the rest of the series would go...

Imagine the most annoying e-couple you've ever seen and you have the MC and his internet wife. The Japanese need to learn that a story has to be entertaining if it's going to have a completely unsympathetic loser for an MC...

This was better than I expected. The story appears to be well thought out and is delivered clearly. The art is not the best but gets the job done. This is definitely at least R-rated.

I have 20 volumes, so I hope the quality continues.
