Alyx Rayer Chronicles #1

Marked for Vengeance

Rate this book
Alyx Rayer’s existence in Atlanta, the eternally bustling capital of Georgia, is one of routine and blending in among the worker bees. But her ‘normal’ life is actually a façade for a higher calling; she's a three hundred year old soul, sent from the darkness to capture her Marked when summoned by her superiors. Until then, she’d supposed to keep her distance. Except… something about him makes it hard to stay away.

While already trapped between honor and desire, a man in a black suit continually shows up when she least expects it, his presence evoking a strange response from the scar she was branded with at birth. Because her superiors never told her what this would mean, or much of anything except what to do when they summon, she can only conclude to try and keep her sanity, and her life, from completely shattering to pieces.

This engaging first book of the series is a Paranormal Romance novel interlaced with twists, turns, and thrilling suspense that is sure to satisfy readers of any genre.

May not be suitable for YA.

Marked for Vengeance is about Alyx Rayer, a seemingly normal human working a day job and hanging out with her best friend Cinda. She is beautiful, smart and dates a rich, handsome doctor but she has a hazardous secret – spying on Isaac, a mysterious ‘painter man’ from a roof top at night. There’s more to Alyx than meets the eye, as she hides her strange scar on her shoulder and seems enraptured with the strange man. And so the journey of Alyx Rayer begins, as her life slowly falls apart and we gradually find out her purpose.

I loved the way the plot was revealed in this book. When we meet Alyx, we don’t know what to expect as she seems like she lives a normal life. Then strange cues pop up here and there about her stalking, her scar and calling Isaac her ‘Marked’. She also alludes to the fact that this may not be her first life time and she needs to do normal things to blend in, like date and hold a job. We don’t find out what Alyx is until the later half in the book, as the pace speeds up and we transition from Alyx the human, to stalker, to supreme being. The sense of mystery captivated me from the start and I couldn’t put this book down.

While not appropriate for the YA audience due to sex scenes and violence, the book is written in a first person YA style that is refreshing and easy to read. I read a particularly heavy book beforehand and this is exactly the type of read I was looking for, one that is entertaining, not a brain burner and a general good read. I would classify this as a dark NA fantasy, sort of similar to Angelfall in that it isn’t appropriate for the younger audience.

The point of view transitions between Alyx and Isaac as we delve into their lives. Isaac is a middle-aged widower whose sole mission is to raise his teenage son. He hasn’t dated ever since his wife passed away and upon stumbling into Alyx at the cafe where he works, he also feels a mutual attraction to this beautiful but strange girl. While there are traces of insta-love going on between the two, they have an interesting relationship to develop as Alyx’s ‘Marked’ target and also someone who she’s been stalking for a while.

The book speeds up towards the last half with a really interesting reveal. I don’t want to give away too much so that you can enjoy the plot for yourself, but I’m interested in seeing how this forbidden romance will continue in the next book, Tethered by Fate. Lucky I don’t have to wait a long time as it’s just been released!

Alyx is an angel sent to Atlanta to be near her Marked in case she is called upon to protect him. She is given rules to observe him, but have no contact with him whatsoever. Will she obey the rules? What happens if she disobeys? Will she be punished for meeting her Marked, Isaac? Does she know about his son? There are so many questions in part one, where the suspense builds with each situation. In part two, only a few of those questions are answered. Just enough to make the reader buy the sequel immediately to find out WHY.

S.J. Pierce wrote an exquisite story. Part two could have gone in a hundred different directions. Which is why I was in awe that it flowed from part one to part two as the ocean flows on the sand. Beautifully written and captivating.

This is the most unusual love story I have ever read. It raises a lot of questions, not just about what happens to Alyx and Isaac. It's an intriguing tale of forbidden love.

Recommended for everyone.

Alyx Rayner is an angel camouflaged in a twenty-five-year-old body and life, created and sent solely to keep watch over her Marked human. Once she arrives on Earth, she is to locate her Marked and stay close by. Any other contact is forbidden. She is to blend in, but something inside her is drawn to Isaac, so she takes the risk to see him and falls for him anyway. She runs into a mysterious man who does not talk and makes her scar tingle in warning which is only the beginning of her troubles.

A single parent devoted to his son, Isaac Walsh is a widower who works at a bistro. A chance meeting with Alyx draws him to her. He has not had feelings like this since his wife’s death and is obsessed to find out who she is. During another chance meeting, a strange man tells Isaac his dreams are prophetic, and that the paintings he creates for them are not to be shared. These people whom he is meeting are more than what they appear.

Alyx and Isaac are drawn to each other. She knows she should keep away from him, but things keep throwing them together. When everyone she knows, including Isaac’s son, disappear, Alyx is finally compelled to do what she has been made for–to capture and protect her Marked. Beyond shepherding him to where she is drawn to, she fumbles in protecting him and fears she is flawed and might not keep him fully safe. Getting there is just one step to the story that is unfolding, but there is more going on.

I find this story to be really intriguing and entertaining, with the added bonus of being unique given its take on guardian angel lore. Alyx is a fascinating mix of naiveté and knowledge about what she is and what she can or cannot do. Her indecisiveness just makes her seem more human. I really like Isaac’s character. He feels so real and down-to-earth. His emotions feel genuine. This is the first book in a series and the mysteries still open at the end will make readers want to pick up the next book to see what happens.

Alyx a truly old soul, who walks among humans. As a returning soul who only gets to stay on Earth three times. Third time is a charm "no"? This being her last run on Earth she is trying it all on for size you could say. Currently in a relationship with Ben. A relationship which seems to have serious questions concerning where her heart lies. If that doesn't make her feel human, I really couldn't describe what would.

In her vigorous effort on keeping an eye on her "Marked" Issac. Breaking all the rules when it comes to no contact with her Marked. Issac a man solo parenting after the loss of his true love. (loved his character) What a man, juggling a child, work , and finding time to paint his prophetic dreams..all with a Highland accent. Issac slowly has Alyx pondering over every aspect of her life on Earth. Alyx poor girl becomes unglued by her deep attraction to her forbidden Mark. Constantly obsessing over him and her duties.

While Alyx enjoys a mid-life crisis like any love confused woman. You as the reader realize so much more is happening. Both Alyx and Issac keep seeing some solemn stranger. One who gives them the Creeps! Who is the mystery guy? Why does Issac and his son keep having crazy dreams.
Will Alyx throw caution to the wind?..

You'll have to read it...LOL

I happen to enjoy the writing style of S.J. Pierce. Her book was a good read. I don't often read about Angel's so this was a first. I found the idea easy to believe and descriptive without killing it!
A couple hang ups would be at the 50% mark Alyx was still struggling, I mean just all over the place. I wanted the story to pick up the pace a skosh. I wanted her to be more decisive. I mean three times on Earth and you still can't think for yourself. This could be just a character flaw..lol All in all I enjoyed the read and look forward to how the Alyx Rayer Chronicles progress..

I received this for an Honest review.

Oh my goodness... where to begin... I typically go into books that I know I'll be reviewing with an expectation that they're going to be freaking awesome and I'm not going to be able to stop until I hit the last pages. Unfortunately, not all of them live up to my expectations and I end up bummed. Luckily, that was not the case this time. I really, really liked this book and I'm ready to jump into Tethered by Fate. So to get down to it... I really liked Alyx! She wasn't obnoxious, she didn't continually make stupid decisions that has drastic consequences for those around her, and I felt like I was able to get a grasp on her character as a whole. I was undeniably sucked into how much she cared for and needed Isaac. While I was really hoping they'd get the opportunity to get hot and heavy at least once (and come on... who doesn't look forward to that kind of thing) I kind of like the way they didn't have that mutual connection until the end. Okay so Isaac? Yum... forreal. I loved everything about him... and my heart hurt so badly for him on a few occasions. It's refreshing to see a character who's main role isn't just super steamy sex god (not that I don't love them too), but who's such a great dad. I also really liked the way Micah fits into everything so he doesn't just end up being a secondary character. Overall I was pretty darn pleased with this one. I did feel like everything happened very quickly though. I mean the story was moving at such a nice pace and then BAM! everything happend all at once and the amount of time (or lack thereof I should say) from climax to the end left my head spinning. However, this was not so big of a problem for me that it would keep me from snatching up the next one in a heartbeat. I'm so happy I got a chance to read this one and I'm definitely a Pierce fan from here on out.

I've tried to read this book. I've picked it up. Put it down. Hell I've even procrastinated this review hoping I could muster up the strength to get through it.

I'm leaving this book on my 'to read' shelf with the hope that I one day finish it.

I honestly can't stand this book. It's incredibly easy to describe a book when you loathe it or you love it but I don't know how to do my feelings justice. I think I'm honestly just struggling to cope with the fact that this book exists and someone somewhere enjoyed it enough to publish it then other people picked it up and read the whole thing.

This book is not poorly written. It's oddly written. A faux first person point of view where you still somehow manage to get a little bit of every character's thoughts as well as a bit of background. Every detail described in any action. When a character has to pour themselves a cup of coffee it's assumed that they pick up the coffee carafe tilt said carafe and aim the coffee into the cup. SJ Pierce seems to think I need to know every single detail which honestly makes the book feel like it was written then the publishing company wasn't satisfied with the number of pages so she literally flew through the book to add as much minutiae as possible. The main female lead is as daft as a pillow despite being 300 some odd years old.

I honestly have to compare this book to the new Disney movie Brave. I can't explain the excitement I had at the previews for that movie. I get through the movie feeling like I went to the a dealership to get a fully equipped zombie slaying truck and instead they gave me a puppy. Sure I like the puppy and if I'd been wanting a puppy it would be great. I feel like the description of the book is so far from what the book is I'm honestly just lost.

I received Marked for Vengeance in return for an honest review from the author S.J. Pierce. Alyx Rayer’s isn’t human she was created for a mission to monitor her marked human until the time comes to remove them from earth. For the last three years she’s lived her human life having friends, a job, and even a boyfriend. She was sent to get just one look at her mark but instead she’s become obsessed with him. She spends several nights a week on an abandoned building’s roof watching him while he paints. Alyx is conflicted she’s not supposed to be seen by her target nor is she supposed to be as obsessed with him as she is. Her only hope is that since this is her last life on earth they let it slide. This isn’t her first time with a marked human it’s her third and last experience.

Isaac has been having haunting dreams, which he turns into his artwork. Recently he’s noticed a stranger on the roof across the way watching him. One night he decides to confront the stranger which leads him to a beautiful brunette who attempts to get away not before he catches her face. It’s the next day when she comes into his work that he gets a good look at her and decides to find out more about her. After a chilly brush off from Alyx he returns home to wait for his son only to be visited by a tall stranger with a beard who tells him he’s being watched and keep his paintings locked up.

Alyx decides that it’s time to end her relationship with her boyfriend realizing her attraction to Isaac will never allow her to be happy with Ben. After ending it with Ben she gets a cryptic phone call from his housekeeper she runs over to his condo to find him murdered. She flees the scene to see if her best friend Cinda is safe only to find her missing and apartment bare. She heads to check on Isaac but he refuses to see her so she can only assume he’s safe for now. Will she be able to save him before the bad people get him?

I loved the story. Marked for Vengeance is an exciting fast paced story that revolves around Alyx and Isaac’s connection. Both characters are each dealing with their own issues one living a life as a human trying to blend in the other being a struggling artist who’s a single dad raising his son alone. They each have their own trials that they must accomplish but the way they are drawn to each other creates a spark of hope in an otherwise bleak world. I found the story-line easy to follow it flows smoothly throughout the book. I ended up staying up late reading only to finish first thing this morning. I found the concept for Marked for Vengeance new and exciting with twists and turns to keep you guessing throughout the story. There are a few adult situations but not enough I would worry about a mature teenager reading and I’m sure an adult will have no issues. I really enjoyed reading Marked for Vengeance it’s been a captivating book right from the start. I can’t wait to get my hands on the next one after such a great first installment.

First things first, I received a free copy of this book by the author (via goodreads.com group Shutup and Read) for a fair and honest review. I do not know the author personally.

Now on to my review. This is one of those books where parts of the story work really well, and other parts do not work as well (for me). I am giving this one 3.5 stars but pushing it up to 4 stars, because I liked the second half of the book so much and the potential for the next book to continue on similar to the second half has me salivating with anticipation.
I will try to break this down for you.
In the beginning I found the main character of Alyx to be quite flat, shallow, and frankly I did not care for her much. Her romance with Benjamin was more of a whine-fest then a love-fest so it also did not interest me. The only character of substance being Issac and his son, Micah. But then half way through the book through a short series of twists and turns the character of Alyx becomes a real, relatable personality whom I become intrigued with.
Now lets take the pace of the story. Once again this book started off slow, focusing on Alyx internal struggles in what appeared to be a near perfect life… not relatable. I kept wondering where the action would kick in… finally about chapter 9 the plot unravels and all hell breaks loose.. quite literally. The second part of the book just zooms by with activity.
As a stand alone, one could not read this book and feel satisfied with the ending. However I came into this book knowing that it was the first in a still being written series. As such I understand that there will be loose ends left for the sequel to run off on. With this in mind, I felt that the book left off with a fair amount of plot resolution but I will be waiting/watching for those loose threads to be resolved.
This book is self published and as such has some typos (missing) words, but not enough to be a distraction.
I recommend this book to readers/lovers of paranormal romance with a strong element of action/adventure.

for a book tour coming up on the 17th.
****************
This book was very unique! It kept me hooked without ever explaining anything in full. I thought - well, perhaps I better read the synopsis again as this is not what I originally thought it was! (I'm not a synopsis reader as I came across quite a few that gave the book away entirely! I read the blurbs to see if I'm interested in reading the book and then I dive into the book later when reading without refreshing myself on the blurb!) Anyway, so for a moment I thought I should reread the blurb, but decided to plow ahead and just keep reading. This story unfolds in spirals and reveals only vague ideas, a tiny bit at a time, while keeping you in suspense. You know that this is Alyx's third time on Earth, that she has a Marked, and that her kind only lives 3 times. She is an old soul in a young body...and really this is where I felt sad for her: she doesn't get her own full life to live. At first, I thought her Marked was someone she had to kill! But you soon learn that it is her person to protect.

Alyx and her Marked, Isaac, are likable because they are NOT perfect. Isaac is so normal as a widower mourning his wife and whose only cares are his son and his art, inspired by his vivid dreaming. Still grieving for his wife and yet tenacious enough to hunt Alyx down after a chance encounter t ofind out who she is.

Alyx is endearing because she seems so...lost. She is a endearing mix of uncertainty and confidence, reverent and rule-breaking. She doubts herself and doesn't know her powers, but is sure enough to break the rules and desire Isaac. Her first thought when violence erupts is to protect those she loves including her friend Cindra. She doubts her abilities and yet still leaps forward on faith. It makes her human and vulnerable.

Her vulnerability combined with Isaac's genuine emotions and reactions pull the reader in fast and deep. The ending...omg I've never been happier to have a sequel in my hands already. *blows out a breath* MY KINDLE LIED AND SAID I HAD 15% MORE TO GO! I did not. :(

I love books about supernatural beings!

Now that we got that out of the way, I loved this book. It has a whole other twist to "they walk among us" and I loved it. The last few chapters had me holding my breath and man if I could push the heroes forward, I would!

But the heroine is "defective", but I have this gut feeling it will be her strongest asset soon. But how soon?

Have to get those other books FAST!

I would recommend this book if you like supernatural stories. :)

:: Disclaimer: I received this book for free in return for an honest review.::

Alyx Rayer is now in the midst of her third lifetime on earth, however, this time is not going to be anywhere near as easy as the previous two. In her 84 years alive as a human, she has always been able to maintain her duty as a Protector and watch her Marked without crossing the line. However, this time the pull she feels towards her new Marked, Issac, is something of which she has never felt before. Inexorably drawn to him will she break the taboo and make contact with him? The Elders who created her, and all Protectors, made it very clear that they were never to interact with or meet face to face with their Marked unless they are summoned to bring them in. In her previous two lifetimes she had never been summoned and simply transitioned when her Marked did. However, this time is going to be different, much different. Her Marked Isaac is quite the interesting character. He has prophetic dreams and paints images from the dreams. Alyx's nickname of, "painter man" is quite fitting in this sense. He also has a very strong bond with his son Micah who also seems to have telling dreams. Being a single father without any family other than his father who lives abroad has left him extremely protective of Micah which is just another one of his loveable traits. This story revolves around what destiny holds in store for Alyx and her Marked, Isaac.

I have to say that throughout the first half of the book I felt as though the pacing was rather slow. Alyx, although a likable enough character, didn't really stand out all that much or give off that feeling of instant connection that some characters provide. Her boyfriend, Benjamin, was also rather dull and other than showcasing the difficulties relationships tend to pose for Protectors in their time on Earth, his presence didn't do all that much to enhance the story. Once I hit the second half of the story, however, everything really starting happening and happening quickly. Isaac and his son Micah were really brought to the forefront of the story which I can only see as a good thing since I found the two of them to be two of the most interesting characters in the story. Isaac's prophetic dreams that inspire his paintings also lent to a sense of suspense that enhanced the feel of the story. Once Alyx is summoned the story starts moving at an almost break neck pace where Alyx's instincts as a Protector are put to the ultimate test. Can she get her Marked, Isaac to the gateway in time and in one piece? We also begin to see more of why Alyx isn't exactly normal for a protector, which only serves to make her character more interesting and also more relatable. The last hundred pages or so really kept me glued to the book and cheering for Alyx and Isaac's success.

As far as my rating of 4/5 stars goes, I went into this story knowing that it was the first of a series of books concentrating on the character of Alyx Rayer, so I expected a good deal of questions to be left at the end as they would tie into the second book of the series. However, as a stand alone book I would have only been able to rate it a 2.5-3/5. The last half of the book is what really drew me in and made the book enjoyable and thrilling. I realize that the first half was necessary to give background information on Alyx's current life and her friends, boyfriend, co-workers, etc. However, I felt like it could have been benefited from a slightly quicker pace. Other than that I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good supernatural thriller/romance. I can't wait to read the second book, "Tethered by Fate(Alyx Rayer Chronicles #2)."

You experience the third birth of Alyx Rayer as her soul is brought to life in her third and final human form. It is a painful transformation, that upon completion, requires her to take on the immediate appearance of a 25 year old human. Each of her kind must endure this process as they prepare to take their place on Earth monitoring the existence of their "marked" human. They are created for the sole purpose of fulfilling their mission. Initially when arriving on Earth, they seek out their marked person to be sure they are close by, but once that is done contact is forbidden until they are instructed to remove the marked one from Earth. Nothing else matters as they slip into place interacting daily with unsuspecting humans. Working, eating, socializing and exercising everyday to impeccably maintaining the human facade.

Alyx's unquestionable beauty is something that is always noticed by others. Clothes and shoes are a passion she indulges while she waits out her time on Earth. The stunning 5'10 body, flawless complexion and waves of long hair were given to her upon her creation. Although she appreciates the external beauty, she knows her time in this body is only temporary. Any friendships she makes, any relationships that she might become involved in will end without explanation when she is signaled to contact her "marked" thus ending her time on Earth. Additionally, the unexpected death of a marked one will also end their time on Earth. Even with this knowledge, and unlike her former lives, she has bonded with two humans while living in Atlanta, Georgia. Cindra, a coworker, who has become a close friend through their daily contact and Benjamin, the gorgeous doctor, who after a year of dating seems to be hoping to take their relationship to the next level. Something that Alyx knows can never happen because of her secrets.

Issac is a handsome widower and single dad. He and his son, Micah, are both tormented with horrible vivid nightmares. Issac channels this images into his art but Micah is afraid that the terrible creatures in his room at night are not really dreams at all. Issac wakes to Micah's terrified screams almost every night. Issac, who is a gifted artist, works as a waiter to help pay the bills while he prepares his collection of paintings for a showing. The dark and violent nature of his and Micah's dreams comes to life in the hauntingly beautiful artwork he creates at night while Micah sleeps. Sometimes as he sits in front of his large open windows in his loft and paints he "feels" as if he is being watched. He looks across the night into the abandoned building but as the shadows shift he shakes off the sensation and continues painting. But the reality is that Issac is being watched. Against her better judgement, Alyx returns night after night as she is inexplicably drawn to seek out Issac. The passion and pull she feels toward him is forbidden. The intricate internal game she plays with herself feels like a betrayal of the relationship she shares with Benjamin but her feelings for Benjamin don't begin to touch the illicit desire that consumes her when she watches her "painter man".

As Issac and Micah's fates unfold and Alyx is called to complete the task she was sent to accomplish, devastation and death will touch those closest to Alyx. Her secret infatuation and adoration has long reaching consequences as Alyx is forced to make life threatening choices to deliver Issac as mandated.

I didn't know what to expect going in to this book. The blurb sounded promising, so I decided to give it a shot. When I read the author's note at the beginning, it made me stop and think. Do we really know who or what walks among us? I know we just survived the Mayan End of the World, but have you seriously given thought to the world as we know it ending? In Marked for Vengeance we learn that there are beings who walk among us - neighbors, coworkers, friends - who were sent here for specific reasons. Some have good intentions and some with evil intentions. I was immediately sucked into this story and trying to uncover its mysteries.

We first meet Alyx, a being whose sole purpose on Earth is to protect her Marked. It is why she was created by her superiors and why she was placed in Atlanta 3 years ago. This is Alyx's third and final lifetime here and at this point she understands all the rules for her kind. However, this time she has a different sort of pull to her Marked - and it's one she's having a hard time ignoring.

Isaac, a widower, father, and artist is just doing his best to get by and raise his son. He has always been plagued by vivid and sometimes disturbing dreams. He typically channels these dreams into his art. His son, Micah, seems to have inherited his father's propensity for dreams, and lately they are coming more frequently and viscerally for both father and son.

One day, Alyx and Isaac meet at the bistro where Isaac works. Isaac feels as though he knows Alyx. Alyx, of course, rebuffs him for she must follow the rule prohibiting contact between herself and her Marked. However, this meeting sets into motion events that endanger not only Alyx, Isaac and Micah, but quite possibly all of humankind.

As we soon learn, the fate of the human world belongs to those Marked. And when evil descends upon Atlanta, it's up to Alyx and the other Angel/Protectors to ensure their Marked's survival and therefore the world's.

Marked for Vengeance is unique in its premise and well executed in its writing. As the first in a series, we learn much about the central characters and also the world building required for the next books. I think it's well-paced and suspenseful. S.J. Pierce weaves religion and mythology well to create an engaging story. And I'm excited to read the next installment.

Note: I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

First of all I must say that I really like the cover of this book, it is simple but the colours work really well. Also it reminds me of the Hunger Games logo slightly. Anyway this book was an interesting read with a different take on angels, as they are assigned to protect one human but without interaction. There was a lot of mystery surrounding what Alyx was and her mark at the start of the book which was slowly unraveled throughout the novel. This was good as it left me with questions that made me want to read on. There was also mystery about random strangers appearing which led me to hope about something happening. As well as this I liked Isaac's character. His love for his son was believable and he was one character I was able to engage and relate to as his feelings were realistic . However this is probably the only character I could do this with.

Written in the third person I became very detached from the characters as the book switched POV. The book became repetitive as well with the phrases "he did & she did" starting sentences constantly. I think I was so detached as Pierce described unnecessary daily actions in huge amounts of detail yet never went into the same amount about the characters/action. Due to this the book was a slow read at times so I found myself skimming pages waiting for the action to start (when it did it was very brief). The unnatural speech and the emphasis on minor words "TOO" or "too" also detracted from the story as it became slightly annoying as the book went on. As well as this I wasn't so keen on Alyx. She was too wishy-washy and took too long to realise things. After spending 2 lives on Earth previously it wasn't believable. There were also quite a few grammatical errors, missed out words and typos which added to the slowness of the book.

Over all this book had an interesting concept with a new take on angels. However for me it needs less detail on everyday actions and more development of the main story line and characters so readers can engage with them better and not want to skim read. As well as this the book could use another round of editing but it was an ok read that may be of interest to paranormal readers.

Alyx is a being sent to earth to protect her Marked. This is her third and final time to exist on earth to keep her Marked, from this life, safe.
Alyx's job is to blend in and act like everyone else. Have a job, go out with friends, and just be a human. She's never supposed to make contact with her Marked. She is there solely to watch over him. But fate has other plans.
Something inside her is drawn to him, to Issac, her Marked. She doesnt know what it is but she is willing to take the risk every chance she gets to see him. On a roof top a few buildings away from Issac she watches and slowly falls for the one man she can never have.

One day while out to lunch with her boss and a friend, she officially meets Issac. Face to face and her resolve to not make eye contact flitters out the door. She is so taken by him but doesnt want to show anyone her inner turmoil.

Issac knows this woman. He's so sure of it. Her face, he's seen her before and asks her while serving them their lunch. Alyx evades his question and soon he walks off wondering how he knows this attractive woman.
And this is a first for him. In the five years since he's lost his wife, he's never felt this way about anyone. This instant spark has him intrigued. But unknowing situations have put a damper on his new found interest. Things are not what they seem and people arent who they seem either.

There is a greater fight and man kind is in trouble and the ones protecting the Marked have secrets. Secrets that may destroy those that are precious.

This book is your typical first book in a series. Lots of details to understand whats to come. I hope in the next book I will be able to connect better with the characters.

Wow!! What an awesome beginning to a new series! Marked for Vengeance is a mysterious read, where the facts take time to get to the surface. I thought that it was a highly entertaining read and loved the authors writing style. She was able to captivate me and keep me guessing!

Aylx is beginning her third and final life on earth to protect her marked human. Her lifespan is determined by her Marked, if he dies, she dies too. So she must ensure his safety. Alyx is a genuine person who cares about those who are close to her. Her best friend Cinder is a great constant in her life. Her job keeps her grounded and occupied while she waits until she is called for service.

Isaac has mysterious dreams and turns his dreams into artwork as he is a very gifted painter. He is a single dad and works a second job at the local diner to support them both. His only priorities are the lives of himself and his son. However the Dark Angel in his paintings is occupying his thoughts more often lately.

I was able to see the connection that they had but Alyx knows what the rules are and therefore won't act upon her feelings. She tries to find comfort in the arms of another man, but it doesn't do enough to quench her desire. Isaac doesn't understand why he is drawn to the dark haired beauty, but decides to pursue her any way.

I enjoyed the mystery behind Alyx's quest. We don't find out all the details until late into the book and I was often speculating how the plot was going to go. The way the plot gradually built was highly entertaining and we were kept in the dark about the details of both Alyx and Isaac. Marked by Vengeance was a fabulous beginning to the series, but the real action is about to begin.....

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Marked for Vengeance by S. J. Pierce

Rating 4****

This book was provided from the author in exchange for honest literary review.

Alyx has a seemingly normal life in Atlanta. She has a great boyfriend who just happens to be a doctor, and a job she likes well enough. The only thing is, Alyx isn't human. She had been sent to earth for a purpose. She needs to see if she can finally find her Marked After all , this is her third time at life on earth and three tries is all that they allow her.
Once she locates her mark, things goes from confusing to royal mess. She is immediately drawn to Isaac, and he quickly becomes an obsession. Knowing that contact or relationships are strictly forbidden, Isaac becomes the center of het obsession.
How do you fight what you were born to do when your soul is attached to another? This story is a great blend of paranormal, romance and the struggle that is cause by denial of the heart. While each Isaac and Alyx have their own inner demons and pasts to work out, or is an great story of love against all odds.
This is one of those books that just suck you in. Finally a novel with real characters that are flawed and do make mistakes. I love real characters, because face it none. of us are perfect. They were believable and had depth. The story was a true original that I seriously enjoyed developing as the story was told.
I do think due to the content I would place this as a mature ya 16 + as a definite read for that genre. It is the start of a series so I am curious to know where the author takes this story.

There are some things I like about this book. I really liked the character of Alyx. I found her to be approachable and realistic, even though she is some sort of paranormal creature. She is a character I could follow and relate to. I also really liked her fixation on the person she is supposed to be guarding. She is completely captivated and obsessed with Isaac. I loved this part of the book--the excitement building until they meet.

I also really liked the premise of the story. The idea of a guardian angel having to work for salvation and then falling in love with their 'mark', those they are destined to shield and protect.

However, I pretty much hated everything else about this book. The ending was one of the worst I've ever read. The whole thing just stopped right in the middle of the action. It felt more like part of a story, not just the first book in a series.

The plot also lost me about half-way through. It turned very unbelievable and coincidental. Alyx's 'human' best friend turns out to be another guardian angel assigned to watch Isaac's son and neither of them knew it. What are the chances (even in fantasy)? It was too much of a stretch for this reader.

And, while I liked Alyx as a faker human, she only felt fake when it was time for her to show her true identity as a guardian angel. She seemed shocked by the whole thing even though she's supposedly done it before.

In all, I won't be continuing the story.

Alyx Rayer is a Protector sent to Earth to watch over her Mark. Alyx appears to have it all great job, apartment, and boyfriend but what she feels for "painter man" makes her feel different. She's not suppose to have any contact with her Mark but she secretly watches him paint from a neighboring building. Isaac Walsh has been dreaming about angels for a very long time now and puts those dreams on canvas he paints. Isaac is a single father raising his son Micah since his wife passed away five years ago. Alyx needs to tell her boyfriend the truth about how she really feels and not to lead him on any more than she already has. Alyx's friend Cindra helps Alyx not feel so lost. A strange man in a black suit wearing fedora makes Alyx's tattoo sting whenever he's around. Alyx has always been told that she'll know the correct time for getting her Mark needs to be. Will Alyx be honest with herself? Who is this strange man? What is Isaac really dreaming about? How does Cindra help Alyx? Your answers await you in Marked for Vengeance.

This is definitely a very different take on angel lore. I liked that the author didn't assume everyone knows about angel lore. I appreciated the attention to detail large and small. I loved Alyx's internal struggle of wanting to watch Isaac for no other reason other than she wanted too. Alyx's struggle made her easily relatable for me. I loved the build up and suspense the author created. I will definitely continue with this series.

Honestly, this book deserves more than three stars but there is no 3.5 star rating. It was slow to start as the characters began to develop. The plot was treading water until the halfway point and then it began to spiral and take depth. A mix of life questions and lessons appear throughout the story. I am intrigued and plan to buy the second and third books to see where Alyx, Cindra, and Issac have in store for them

As I read the story I jotted a few notes that made me think:

Slow first half but then the plot picks up like a California Wild Fire.

Sometimes your worst imaginative ideas are not that far from the truth.

First, I want to thank the author for giving me the chance to read this book for free in exchange for an honest review.

This is the first time I have not been able to finish a book I was reading for review. I just couldn't get connected to the characters. One of the biggest problems I've had is that I just don't understand what Alex's purpose is. Why is Issac marked for vengeance? Is it vengeance against him or for him? I'm about a quarter of the way through the book and I still don't know. I'm going to keep the book in my reading list and hopefully will get a day here soon in which I can immerse myself in the book and be able to update this review.

this book was great. I bought it as a free nook book. I am dying to read the second in the series. Alyx and Issac are great characters that leap off the page. Both are feeling their way through life with out knowing why they are doing what they are doing and what it means for the pre apocalyptic world. Then everything falls apart and Alyx has to rely on instincts that she has never used before to get herself and Issac into safety. Great story, very well written. I would definitely recommend this book, though I wish the end was a bit more resolved.

For the most part this book was a very good read. The storyline was definitely intriguing and I am interested in seeing how it ends. I did have some issues connecting with the main character, Alyx, which made it a bit tough to really get into the book. I felt more of a connection with Isaac and his son though. Either way, I would recommend this book and do plan on continuing to read the series.

I enjoyed the premise right from the beginning. The guardian angle perspective was new to me and very intriguing. The flaws were in the editing - page gaps, line spacing etc. These can be very distracting. Started a little slow but picked up. Curious to see where the series goes. I would recommend it.

Very good beginning for the Alyx Rayer series. Why is Alyx so drawn to Isaac Walsh, the man she is supposed to protect? Why is she different from every angel she has ever met? And will she ruin everything she has worked for by giving in to her draw to Isaac? Definitely a good read, and a good introduction to Alyx and Isaac. Also good prep for S.J. Pierce's next series, the Kat Walsh series.
