The inside story of the infamous Brigitte Bardot reveals her two lives--one as a sexy film star and one as an animal-rights activist--through interviews with former husbands, former lovers, oldest friends, her current husband, and Bardot herself.
Jeffrey Robinson reeled me into Bardot's life story effectively from the very first page without me being a fan of her prior, so his entertaining, strategic narrative voice deserves as much credit as the unique nature of Bardot herself. Bridgette Bardot was and is a timeless icon of beauty and glamour rivaling that of Marilyn Monroe, but she also had to suffer the unforeseen consequences and burden of such a position for the rest of her life and in ways that really surprised and intrigued me. This led to many unpleasant and less than charming personality deficiencies based on competing self-importance/ego with self-loathing, but she ultimately took control of her fate and used her immense fame to improve the condition of animals around the world and left a legacy of love. Overall, a very redemptive biography.
One of the first books I read this corona lock down, and it was a marvellous, informative and interesting perspective on a complex icon. I will say sometimes it's a touch dense! : ]
She was/is definitely a bit of a character, that's for sure. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the first of her 'two lives' is the more interesting, as its hard not to be drawn in by the 50's/60's glamour of an international sex symbol and actress, especially one as insatiable as Bardot. Her 'second life' pales somewhat in comparison to this - its impossible not to - yet her dedication to the animal kingdom is genuine and certainly worth knowing about. Overall, a very good - if admittedly biased - biography, with some great pictures. Va-va-voom.
